Pebble Smart Doggie Doorbell Installation guide

Pebble Smart

™ Doggie Doorbell
Installation and Training
Pebble Smart™ Doggie Doorbell will help
save your doors from being scratched up.
It is also a fun training toy to teach your
dog a new trick. You will have a lot of fun
with your dog using Pebble Smart™
Doggie Doorbell. Here are the easy steps.
Installation
DInstall 2 new AA batteries (not included)
in the receiver.
DSeparate the adapter cover from the
housing, by gently pulling the hook
downward.
DHold both sides of the transmitter
button and slide the transmitter out of the
housing, bottom first.
DOn the back of the transmitter, pull out
the plastic tab while holding down the
back cover. This will activate the small 12v
battery preinstalled within the transmitter.
Push the transmitter to test. The receiver
should sound.
DDecide if you want your dog to use the
doorbell when he comes in or goes out.
Then select accordingly either an inside or
an outside location on the wall near the
door. Note: For indoor installation, a
wood or glass surface is more preferable
than a drywall surface. (See caution
below.)
DWith your dog in standing position, hold
his head up slightly and mark the height of
his nose.
DThoroughly clean the mounting area
above the mark.
DPeel the paper off the mounting tape
on the back of the housing. Caution: For
indoor installation, especially on a drywall,
expose only the ends of the mounting
tape by folding the two ends of the paper
toward the center. This will help reduce
the chance of damaging the wall surface,
in case the housing needs to be moved or
removed at a later time.
DWith the inside arrow pointing upward,
press the housing firmly onto the wall, just
above the mark.
DReplace the transmitter inside the
housing.
DHook the adapter cover over the
housing and snap the hook in at the
bottom.
DPush the push plate to test. You should
need to push only gently to ring the bell.
Note: If your dog is sensitive to sound, do
not test with the receiver close to your
dog. To train your dog to be comfortable
with the sound, start by placing the
receiver in another room or a drawer and
letting your dog hear the sound in the
distance. As he becomes comfortable with
the sound, gradually bring the receiver
closer.
Training
Now the fun begins!
Method 1: Using Treats as Lures
This method is effective with dogs that are
food motivated. If your dog is motivated
by rewards other than food, see Method 2.
DDrop a small piece of your dog’s
favorite treat in the treat space behind
the push plate.
DDraw your dog’s attention to the push
plate and say “Ring the bell!” (or any
other command you choose). As soon as
he touches the push plate, praise and
reward him with another piece of treat.
Training with a clicker will quicken the
process.
DRepeat until your dog gets it. Then
transition to rewarding only when he
makes the bell ring.
DTo remove the treat, lift the plastic
lining inside the treat space. (Treat should
not be left in the space after the training
session.)
DNext train him without a treat in the
treat space. Point to the push plate (or
stare at it) and say your command. As
soon as your dog nudges the push plate,
praise and reward him enthusiastically.

Push Plate
DAfter your dog can ring the bell on
command, transition to rewarding him
only after he rings the bell and has gone
through the door.
DIf you are training your dog to use the
Doggie Doorbell on the outside, you can
stand inside the door. Open the door just
a crack. Call his name and say the
command. As soon as he rings the bell,
open the door to let him in, praise him
happily and reward him.
DYou can also approach the door
together with your dog and ask him to
“Ring the bell!” When he rings the bell,
open the door and praise him.
DCarry out several short training sessions
every day. And keep them fun.
DSoon your dog will learn to ring the bell
on his own when he wants to use the door.
Method 2: Target Training
If your dog is already target trained,
training him to ring the Doggie Doorbell
will be very easy. Just treat the push plate
as his new target. Or you can follow the
steps below.
DTake the adapter cover off the housing.
Hold it in your hand and offer the push
plate to your dog a couple of inches above
his nose.
DYour dog will naturally try to touch
what you are offering with his nose. As
soon as he gestures, reward him with a
treat. The reward can be in other forms
that motivate your dog.
DRepeat this process and gradually let
your dog touch the push plate with more
force.
DReplace the adapter cover onto the
housing.
DStand by the Doggie Doorbell and draw
your dog's attention to you.
DLook at the Doggie Doorbell. Your dog
will figure you want him to do something
and will try to offer a behavior. As soon as
you see the correct behavior, which is
touching the Doggie Doorbell, reward him.
DRepeat this until your dog nudges the
push plate with enough force to trigger
the receiver.
DNow transition to opening the door and
letting the dog go through when he
triggers the Doggie Doorbell. Reward him
after he has gone through the door.
DSoon your dog will associate clearly his
nudging the Doggie Doorbell with the
door opening.
Teach Better Doorbell Manners
It is common for a dog to rush to the door
and go into bark-mode when the house
doorbell rings. Pebble Smart Doggie
Doorbell can be used to teach more
appropriate doorbell manners. You can
take the transmitter out of the adapter
and trigger the “ding-dong” sound while
teaching your dog to stay or be quiet.
Consult a trainer or visit our website for
more information.
Notes
DIf your dog is used to pushing or
scratching the door to be let in, it may
take some persistence to retrain him. First
firmly establish ringing the doorbell on
command. Then try to remind him before
he scratches the door. If he does scratch,
give him a minute before responding. If he
does not ring the bell, ask him to ring the
bell before letting him in.
DIf your dog prefers to use his paws to
touch things, you can train him to ring the
Doggie Doorbell with his paws.
DIf your dog rings the Doggie Doorbell
repeatedly just for getting a treat, instead
of for using the door, you can help him
adjust his behavior by rewarding him only
after he has gone through the door.
DYou can select different tunes for the
receiver by sliding the side button up.
Each press of the transmitter will activate
a different tune.
DIf the Doggie Doorbell frequently fails
to ring when you push the transmitter, the
AA batteries in the receiver might need to
be replaced.
DThe transmitter comes with a small 12v
battery preinstalled. The battery typically
lasts over a year on average use.
Replacement can be purchased online or
at local electronic stores. To replace the
transmitter battery, use a small flat-blade
screwdriver to pry open the back of the
transmitter.
We Love Dogs
We created Pebble Smart Doggie Doorbell
for our dog, Pebble. We hope you and
your dog enjoy it as much as we and
Pebble do. For us, at the heart of having a
dog is the connection with a loving animal.
Training your dog with fun activities
deepens that connection. When Pebble
rings the door, he feels happy and smart,
every time.
Visit our website at PebbleSmart.com for
more information. And we would love to
hear from you.
Thank you!
