The STS8D GR and the SDS8P GR models p ovide Se ial po t to Ethe net connectivity.
Leading edge featu es include, next gene ation IP suppo t (IPV6) and 10/100/1000
Ethe net speeds. The SDS8P GR also includes unive sal softwa e selectable EIA
232/422/485 inte faces and is 802.3af Powe ove Ethe (PoE) compliant.
This guide cove s basic installation and configu ation and is intended fo fi st time
setup o p oduct evaluation.

Button/Switch Functions
Reset Button
The inset RESET button will eboot the IOLAN if pushed in and eleased quickly. It will
eset the IOLAN to facto y defaults if pushed in and held fo mo e than th ee seconds
Console/Serial Switch
The IOLAN is set in the facto y to se ial (up position). Unless you plan to attach a
console to the IOLAN, leave the dip switch in the se ial position. If this DIP switch is
set to the down position, then the se ial po t is in console mode. In console mode,
the po t p ovides access to the IOLAN management function using the indust y
standa d CLI command set. See the IOLAN Command Line Inte face Refe ence Guide.
Connecting the Hardware
Connecting the barrel connector
Plug the ba el connecto end into the IOLAN, then plug the powe adapte into a
powe sou ce. The Powe /Ready LED should show a solid g een afte the boot
sequence.
1. Connect the Ethe net cable f om the RJ-45 plug (10/100/1000) to the HUB o
switch that will p ovide netwo k connectivity (if applicable to you application).
2. The console dip switch on the IOLAN should be set to the up position fo se ial
mode.
3. Connect the powe co d st ain elief, if desi ed. See IOLAN STS8D GR/SDS8P GR
Ha dwa e Installation.
Power over Ethernet
The IOLAN SDS8P GR can ope ate as a Powe ed Device (PD) unde IEEE 802.3af
ope ating with end-span and mid-span powe sou ces (PSE).
Power On Cycle
When the powe is connected to the IOLAN, the Powe /Ready LED will cycle th ough
seve al sequences and will end in a solid g een once the unit is fully booted and
eady to be configu ed. If the LED is not solid g een afte two minutes, see the IOLAN

Connecting Ethernet
Connect the netwo k to the Ethe net po t using a Cat5/5e Ethe net cable.
Connecting the Serial Device
Connect the se ial device to the IOLAN se ial po t.

application equi es it. Softwa e selectable EIA 232/422/485 inte faces a e only

Configuring the Unit
The IOLAN featu es seve al diffe ent configu ation methods (i.e. HTTP, Telnet,
SNMP) as well as an exte nal Windows based Utility (DeviceManage ). Fo the most
up to date documentation on any of these configu ation methods see the IOLAN
Use ’s Guide

Connecting to the IOLAN
1. Install the DeviceManage softwa e to you laptop o PC.
2. Sta t the DeviceManage p og am f om installed p og ams.
3. Unde the DeviceManage menu, select File, then select Connect to.
4. You IOLAN will show as Unconfigu ed in the list.
5. Select you IOLAN f om the list and select the Assign IP button.
6. Assign a valid IP add ess to the IOLAN that is on you netwo k.
7. You will be p ompted by the softwa e fo the admin passwo d befo e being
able to connect and configu e the IOLAN (superuser (case sensitive)).
8. You should change the admin passwo d to est ict unautho ized access to the
IOLAN.
