Pinnacle Systems TARGA 3000
Introduction
About The Pinnacle Systems
TARGA®3000
Important: Be sure to register your TARGA 3000 Series product. Doing so will entitle you to software
updates, answers to frequently asked questions, and put you on the TARGA E-Mail distribution to receive
important bulletins. Either fill out the registration card enclosed in the box (see Chapter 1), or register online
at: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/register
The TARGA 3000 is Pinnacle Systems’ most powerful desktop editing and compositing
solution. TARGA 3000 provides broadcast quality video, including true uncompressed
video as well as MPEG-2 and DV video processing. TARGA 3000 also supports the
“RGB A” format for effects processing, and is compatible with the video and key features
provided by animation and compositing applications. The TARGA 3000 video processor
has a memory centric architecture that enables complex multilayer editing and
compositing in real-time with sub-pixel DVEs, RGB chroma keying, and advanced color
correction operating simultaneously on multiple layers of video. TARGA 3000 offers a
complete range of analog and digital I/O, most of which are provided by the TARGA 3000
series of professional Pro Analog and Pro Digital Breakout Boxes
Other features of a TARGA 3000 system are:
Note: MPEG-2 capture and editing is not available in the 1.0 software release of TARGA 3000. MPEG-2
export is available. MPEG-2 capture and editing is an integral part of TARGA 3000 system, and will be
provided free of charge in an upcoming software release.
• Real-time playback of 3 streams of D1 uncompressed video in real time and 2 streams of
compressed video in real time with on-board capability to move up to 4 streams.

PC System Recommendations
We recommend that you use a certified Pinnacle Systems workstation, or a Pinnacle
Systems “Ready To Edit” solution. This is because the throughput requirements for
multiple simultaneous video streams plus graphics and audio are extremely high. As a
result, system hardware requirements are equally high. TARGA 3000 requires a high-end
workstation capable of handling this level of throughput.
In addition, configuring the workstation is difficult because TARGA 3000 is specifically
designed to push the system to its throughput limit to provide you the greatest possible
productivity. Under the hood of a high-end personal workstation, you’ll find many
permutations of BIOS settings, NT service packs, interrupt conflicts, hard drive mode page
settings, hard drive striping/formatting settings, driver settings, and PCI slot selections.
Pinnacle Systems has certified only a few specific configurations so these and other
criteria can be precisely optimized for the highest possible throughput in a real-time video
environment. These settings are so interrelated and specific to each configuration that it is

ix
Pinnacle Systems TARGA 3000
exceptionally difficult for Pinnacle Systems to support systems that we do not physically
have in Technical Support.
Although you may have had a successful experience in configuring a video system
yourself, we strongly discourage you from attempting to do so with a TARGA 3000. It is a
better choice to rely upon your Pinnacle Systems Authorized Value Added Reseller to
configure a system for you. For a list of Authorized Value Added Resellers and certified
TARGA 3000 system configurations, see the Customer Support section of the Pinnacle
Systems web site at: http://www.pinnaclesys.com
TARGA 3000 system recommendations are as follows:
•Pinnacle Systems certified pre-configured workstation (with workstation monitor, keyboard,
mouse, and cables for these items)
• TARGA 3000 Pro Analog or Pro Digital Breakout Box
• One or more VTRs (preferably IEEE-1394 or SDI SMPTE 259M compatible)
• Analog video monitor
• Speakers
• Cables for connecting your deck, analog video monitor, and speakers
Your VTR should be the highest practical quality. To take advantage of the capabilities of
TARGA 3000, we recommend a deck with component-level outputs, although the
TARGA 3000 does accept S-Video and Composite Video. Also, a deck with RS-422 for
device control lets you control it from within Premiere v5.1 or greater.
Note: For the latest information on what versions of Adobe Premiere or other non-linear editing
software can be used, check the online compatibility guide at http://www.pinnaclesys.com

Card Installation Procedure
These are general-purpose installation instructions. Since a computer can come in
different design configuration styles (such as the “tower” design), you should refer to the
owner’s manual of your computer for additional information on installing cards. You
should also refer to the “Read Me” files provided with the TARGA software.
1. Turn off the computer and monitor.
Unplug the computer and disconnect any communication cables from the rear of the
computer. Unplugging the power cord and cables helps to ensure that no power is
running on the motherboard, which reduces the risk of damage to your equipment and
the TARGA card.
2. Remove the cover from the computer.
Check the owner’s manual for instructions on how to remove the cover.
3. Discharge static electricity that you may have on your clothes or body.
Use the Anti-Static Wrist Strap that is provided with your TARGA package. Also,
touch the metal part of the power supply to discharge any static electric charge that
you might be carrying.

1-4 Chapter 1: Card Installation & Hardware Setup
4. Prepare an expansion slot.
Locate an empty PCI slot and remove the metal slot cover at the back of the
computer’s expansion slot area (Figure 1-2). Make sure the slot can accommodate
the full length and width of the TARGA 3000, and that there are no obstructions.
5. Remove the TARGA card from its antistatic bag.
Make sure you are grounded via the antistatic wrist strap that is provided with your
TARGA package. Handle the card by its edges and by its metal bracket. Avoid
touching the connector pins on the bottom of the card.
6. Optional: Attach module to A/V input/output connector on card .
If you have a module (i.e., daughter card) to connect to the TARGA 3000 input/
output connector (refer to Figure 1-1), you may want to connect the module to the
TARGA at this time. Refer to the instructions that came with your module.
7. Insert the TARGA card into the expansion slot.
With the bracket toward the open access port, align the connector on the bottom of
the card directly over the slot you’ve chosen. Then push down and gently rock the

card lengthwise until the card is firmly seated. The board may need to be “seated”
twice. When pushed into the slot, the board will catch as if it were in place – gently
continue to exert pressure until the board “seats” again or until you see that the board
is completely installed.
Important: Don’t force the card. If there is resistance, remove the card and try
again.
8. If you are not going to use the 4-pin hole 1394 connector (refer to Figure 1-1),
put the cover back on the computer .
If necessary, check the owner’s manual for instructions on how to place the cover
back onto the computer.
9. Optional: If using the card's VIP connector and/or 4-pin hole 1394 connector,
attach the appropriate peripheral(s) at this time.
10. Connect Pro Analog or Pro Digital Breakout Box to the TARGA 3000 card.
Connect the cable from the back of the Pro Analog or Pro Digital Breakout Box to
the output connector on the bracket of the TARGA 3000 card. Refer to Figure 1-3.
Important: We recommend that you do not disconnect or reconnect the Breakout Box
cable from or to the TARGA 3000 card while the computer is powered up.

About The TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box
The TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box supports XLR balanced audio, RCA
unbalanced audio, S-Video (YC), Component Video (Y, B-Y, R-Y), Composite Video
(CV/CS), Reference (synchronized or genlocked), and a key out (COMP-B). Refer to
Figure 1-4.
Rack Mounting The TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box
An optional rack mounting kit for the TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box can be
acquired from where the TARGA 3000 was purchased. Rack Mounting instructions for
the TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box can be found in Appendix B.
Pro Analog Breakout Box Input And Output Connections
The input and output connections for the TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box are
defined as follows:
XLR Audio: The dual-channel XLR connectors are for balanced analog input and output
audio. Use the XLR connector labeled “L” for Left and “R” for right.
Figure 1-4 TARGA 3000 Pro Analog Breakout Box Input and Output Connections

1-7
Pinnacle Systems TARGA 3000
RCA Audio: The dual-channel RCA connectors are for unbalanced analog input and output
audio. Use the RCA connector labeled “L” for Left and “R” for right.
S-VIDEO: If you are using an S-Video (Y/C) input or output source, use the S-Video
4-pin Mini-DIN connector.
Y B-Y R-Y: The BNC connectors labeled “Y,” “B-Y,” and “R-Y” are used for Betacam
and Betacam-J component input and output. If a Betacam format is going to
be used, all 3 of the BNC connectors for input or output must be used for a
complete betacam signal. “Y” is for Luma or Luminance. “B-Y” and “R-Y”
signify color difference in a signal.
The color difference labeling Pinnacle Systems uses (Y/B-Y/R-Y) is a
standard representation of a Betacam Component video signal format. You
may encounter others, such as Y/Pb/Pr or Y/U/V. In these cases, attach the
Breakout “Y” to the Y connector on the peripheral, the Breakout “B-Y” to the
U or Pb/B connector on the peripheral, and the Breakout “R-Y” to a V or Pr/R
connector on the peripheral.
COMPOSITE: If you are using a Composite Video input or output source, use the BNC
connector labeled “Composite” for Composite Video (CV).
REF: “Ref” (Reference) is used to provide subcarrier field ID for the S-Video and
Composite outputs. This is to be used when Y/B-Y/R-Y is selected as an
input. If “Ref” is used, both it and the selected video source must be locked
together.
COMP(B): Use to output to a second Composite Video device, or as a “Key” output
signal. The output signal is provided for application software that allows an
8-bit Alpha channel for image blending information. Availability of a Key
signal is a function of third party applications designed to take advantage of
this hardware feature of the TARGA 3000.
