INSTALLING EX3 SERIES FULL RANGE LOUDSPEAKERS
Installation in a factory location
1. Carefullyremovethegrillecoveringthefactoryspeaker.Inmostcasesitwillbe“press-fit”orscrewed
tomountingtabsmoldedintothesurroundingarea.If youexperienceanyresistance,consultyour
dealeroryourcar’sowner’smanualtodetermineifthereisanyspecialwaythemanufacturerhas
securedthegrille.
2. Removeallscrews,mountingclipsorlockwashersholdingthefactoryspeakerinplaceandsave
themforreuse.Liftthespeakeroutoftheholeashortdistance.
3. Beforeunhookingthespeakerwires,identifythepositivespeakerterminal(usuallymarkedwitha
reddotor [+I, oritistheterminalthatislarger or wider) andidentifythenegativespeaker
terminal(usuallymarked[-I, orhavingnomarking,orwhicheverterminalisthesmalleror
narrowerofthetwo).Markthewireconnectedtothepositiveterminalforlateridentification,Use
apermanentinkmarkerorpieceoftape.
4. Disconnectthefactoryspeaker.Afterdisconnectingthefactoryspeaker,connectthewirestoyournew
PolkAudiospeaker,hookingupthepositive[+] wiretothewider ofthetwoEX3tenninalsandthe
negative[-I tothenarrowerEX3tenninal.
5. MountyourEX3LoudspeakerusingthemountinghardwareyousavedfromStep2.
6. Remountthefactorygrillecover.
7. RepeatSteps1-6fortheotherspeaker(s).

Installing your speakers in a “New Location”
Factorylocationsuncool?Pickanewlocation.Besuretotakeintoaccountbothyourvehicle’sdesign
andyoursonicgoals.Doorpanels,kickpanelsordashboardsmakethemostsenseforroundor4”x6”
speakers.Beforeyoubegin,readallofthesesteps.Ifyouhaveanydoubtsaboutyourabilitytoexecute
anyofthesesteps,saveyourselfalotofgriefandcontactaprofessionalinstaller.YourPolkAudiodealer
isagoodplacetofindone.
1. Ibingthedoorpanelpy-tool,carefullyremoveanydoorpanels,kickpanels,moldedpartsorfabric
coveringstoexposethesurfacethatwillneedtobecuttoinstallthenewspeaker.
2. Checkthedimensionsaroundandbehindtheinstallationareaforfit.Thisincludesanymoving
partsbehindthespeaker(movethewindowsupanddown)orthesidesofthespeaker(openand
closedoes)
3. Locatethetemplateoverthedesiredlocation.Drawtheinsidecircleandmarkatleasttwoopposing
screwlocations.(FIG.
I)
4. Cutthecirclewiththeappropriatetool.Drillpilotholesforthescrewlocations.Filetheedgesofany
baremetalsurfacesuntilsmooth,thencoatwithprimertopreventrust.
5. Whenprimerisdly,slipmountingclipsoverthescrewholes.

whenpassingthroughdoors.
7. ConnectthewirestoyournewPolkAudiospeakers.Hookthepositive[+I wiretothewider ofthe
twoEX3terminalsandthenegative[-] tothenarrowerEX3terminal.
8. Carefullyorientthenewspeakeroverthescrewholesandmountingclips.Tightenthescrewsfirmly
tosecurethespeakertothemountingsurface.
9. Snap
on
thenewspeakergrille.
10.RepeatStepsl-9fortheotherspeaker(s).

EX340 SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
EX340modelshaveflangesthatcanberemovedtofacilitateeasyplacementin tightspots,suchasin
someimportvehicles
(FIG.
3).Removeonlytheflange(s)thatarenecessarytomakethespeakerfitthe
chosenlocation.Securethespeakerwithatleasttwoopposingflanges.Insomevehicles,youmayhave
tobendorangle(butnotbreak)oneofthetwoflangestogettheproperfitwheninstallingthespeaken
inyourdashboard.Toremoveflanges,usetinsnips.Donotuseasanderorgrinder,asthatcouldcause
finemetalshavingstofallintothevoicecoilanddriversuspensionunits.
AIMING THE ROTATING ELLIPTICAL LENS FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE
EX3Seriesspeakers(exceptEX369)featureaRotatingEllipticalLens(REL)mountedonthetweeter
(FIG. 4).
Thislensallowsyoutocustomizeyoursystem’sresponsebyfocusinghighfrequenciesatyour
listeningposition.Thiswillresultinmoredetail,betterimagingandthebestpossiblehighfrequency
performanceinyourvehicle.AimtheRELwhilelisteningtoapieceofmusicthatyouarefamiliarwith.
ToaimtheRotatingEllipticalLens:
1. PlaceyourthumbandforefingerunderneaththeliparoundtheREL.
2. GentlypulltheRELtowardyouuntilit “clicks.”disengagingtheRELlockingsystem.Makesurethat
thelensrotatesfreelybeforeaiming.
3. NowtheRELwillmovefreelysothatyoucandirectthehighfrequencyenergytowardyourlistening
position
(FIG.
5).Toavoid“bright”highs,aimtheRELawayfromhardreflectivesurfaces(glassor
hardplasticpanels).
4. Whenyou’vefoundthebestRELpositionforyourlisteningenvironment,gentlypushtheREL
straight“in” untilitlocksfirmlyintoposition.Pushwithequalforcearoundtheperimeterofthe
RELtoensureacompletepressuresealforthebestperfomiance.
YOU MUST PUSH THE
REL BACK FIRMLY INTO THE LOCKED POSITION BEFORE USING YOUR EX3
COAXIAL SPEAKERS.

LOW FREQUENCY CUT-OFF FOR SYSTEMS WITH SUBWOOFERS
Ifyouhaveasubwooferinyoursystem,youmaywanttodecreasethemount ofbassfrequencies
goingtoyourmid-rangespeakers(whichiswhatyour“full range”speakerswouldbeifyouhada
subwooferin
your
system).Doingthiswillresultinbettermid-rangedetailandincreasedpower
handling.Thereare
hvo
waystorolloffthebassbeforeitgetstoyourmid-rangespeakers.Onewayisto
usea“bassblocker,”acapacitor
placed
inserieswiththespeakerinput.Bassblockersareinstalledin
series,oneendconnectedwiththepositiveleadfromyouramplifierandtheotherendconnectedtothe
positiveleadofeachofyourspeakers
(FIG. 6).
Bassblockercapacitors(200microfarad@ lOOvolts,
non-polarized)areavailableatmostcarstereodealers,RadioShackandpartssupplystores.Theother
routeistouseanelectroniccrossoverdevicethatallowsfilteringbelow1OOHzorso.Youcanfindthese
devicesatyourauthorizedPolkAudiodealer.

AMPLIFIER POWER REQUIREMENTS
YournewEX3Loudspeakerwillworkwellwithavarietyofelectroniccomponents.Aslittleas10watts
perchannelwilldeliveradequatelisteninglevelsinmostcars.If youhaveanoisycarorintendtoplay
yoursystematloudlisteninglevels,morepowerwillbenecessarytoachievethebestperformance.
ConsultyourPolkAudiodealerforspecificamplifierrecommendations.
SAFE LIMITS OF OPERATION
YournewEX3Loudspeakersaremadewiththehighestqualitymaterialsforyearsofdurable,trouble-
freeperformance.However,damagecanoccurtoloudspeakerswhenanamplifier,regardlessofits
wattage,ismadetoplayathigherlisteninglevelsthanitspowercanclearlyproduce.Thisisusually
beyondthe“1to2o’clock’positiononthevolumecontrol.Thisresultsinveryhighlevelsofaudible
distortion,originatingintheamplifier,whichaddaharsh,grittysoundtoyourmusic.Contraryto
popularbelief,aspeakerismorelikelytobedamagedbyttyingtogettoomuchvolumefromalow-
poweredampthanfromahigh-poweredone.

checkallwireconnections.
Makecertainyourelectronicequipmentisoperatingcorrectlybyhookingupanotherspeakertothe
speakeroutput.Forexample,ifyouarenotgettingsoundfromtheleftchannelspeaker,connectthe
rightchannelspeakertotheleftoutput.Ifyoustillgetnosoundfromthatside,theproblemisinyour
amporsourceelectronics.Shouldyouisolatetheproblemtothespeaker,contacttheauthorizedPolk

Product)willbefreefromdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipforaperiodof(1)oneyearfromthe
dateoforiginalretailpurchasefromaPolkAudioAuthorizedDealer.However,thiswarrantywill
