Foreword
Thank you for buying our product.
This machine has been built in conformity with applicable European standards and
regulations.
These operating instructions explain how to operate the machine safely and efficiently and
how to maintain it.
Any person entrusted with the transport, installation, commissioning, operation or
maintenance of the machine must have read and understood:
▪ the operating instructions
▪ the safety instructions
▪ the safety information given in the individual chapters.
To avoid operator error and ensure problem-free operation, the operating instructions must
be available to the operating personnel at all times.

The operating personnel (operators) are those entrusted by the operator to operate the
machine.
Technical personnel
Technical personnel are persons entrusted by the operator of the machine with special tasks
such as installation, set-up, maintenance and troubleshooting.
Electrician
An electrician is a person who, by virtue of his specialist training, has knowledge of electrical
systems, standards and regulations and is able to identify and prevent possible hazards.
Machine
The term machine replaces the commercial designation of the object to which these
operating instructions relate (see cover sheet).

Explanation of symbols
The following symbols and instructions warn against possible injuries or damage to property
or are intended to assist you in your work.
DANGER
Hazard warning
This symbol appears next to instructions relating to safety at work wherever a hazard to
life and limb exists if the instructions are not complied with.
Follow these instructions at all times and exercise particular care and attention.

Warning of dangerous electrical voltage
Contact with live parts can result in immediate death.
Protective covers and enclosures marked with this sign may only be opened by qualified
electricians after the electricity supply has been turned off.

General safety information
The machine must only be used by individuals who are familiar with its operation and
dangers and who have read and understood the operating instructions.
▪ The operator must train his personnel accordingly.
The machine must not be operated or maintained whilst under the influence of alcohol, other
drugs or medication that affect the operator's reactions.
The machine must not be used unless it is perfect working order.
Ensure the machine is stable before starting it.
Minimum age of operator: 18 years.
Only one person may operate the machine at a time.
Ensure that your work area is well lit, as poor lighting considerably increases the risk of
injury.
Never work without the protective guards in place.
Do not carry out any repair, set-up, maintenance or cleaning work unless the drive unit is
switched off and the tool is at rest.
▪ If the machine has a PTO drive, the universal joint shaft must be removed from the
tractor.
▪ If the machine is driven by an electric motor, set main switch to 0 and disconnect the
power cable.
Never leave the machine running unattended.
Switch off the machine's drive unit before carrying out any adjustments.
Only use original - POSCH - spare parts.
Do not modify or tamper with the machine.
Work on electrical equipment must only be carried out by qualified electricians.
Never use damaged cables.
Machines with electric motors must not be used in the rain as this can lead to a malfunction
of the switch or the motor.
Safety information for debarking machines
Do not reach into the debarking disc!
Do not reach into the extractor chute!
Wear a face guard when working.
Wear safety shoes and close-fitting clothes when working with this device.
The maximum chip thickness must not exceed 1.1 mm.
Only use the machine outdoors.
When turning off the machine, always be careful of the tool runout until the machine has
come to a standstill.

Noise
The workplace-related noise level is 98 dB(A), measured at the ear of the operator.
In the case of machines with a PTO drive, the noise level depends on the noise of the tractor.
Ear protection is therefore necessary.
The stated values are emissions values, and thus do not necessarily represent reliable
values for the work area. Although there is a correlation between emission and pollutant
levels, it is not possible to deduce reliably from that whether or not additional precautionary
measures are necessary. Factors that influence the level of pollutants present in the work
area include the individual nature of the work area, other sources of noise, e.g. the number
of machines and other work operations being carried out in the vicinity. Equally, permissible
values for a work area may vary between different countries. However, this information
should enable the user to estimate the dangers and risks more accurately.
Remaining risks
Even if all safety precautions are observed and the machine is used in accordance with the
instructions, some risks still remain:
▪ Touching of revolving parts or tools.
▪ Injury caused by flying logs or log pieces.
▪ Risk of burns if the engine is not properly ventilated.
▪ Hearing loss if ear protection is not worn when working.
▪ Human error (e.g. due to excessive physical exertion, mental strain, etc.)
With every machine, some risks still remain. Therefore you should always be very careful
when working. It is up to the operating personnel to ensure that work is carried out safely.
Proper use
The machine Schälprofi 500 is designed exclusively for debarking and pointing logs up to
a diameter of 20 cm.
Any other or improper use is expressly forbidden.

Description
The Schälprofi 500 is a woodworking machine that can taper and debark logs in one
operation.
The machine is driven either by an electric motor or by a PTO drive.
Before debarking the log can be tapered using the swivelling tapering device.
The tapering device is swivelled using a foot pedal. The log is placed on the feeding device
(worm shaft), which automatically triggers the debarking process and starts the feeder.
Finish quality can be altered by adjusting the continuously variable feeder.
The chips produced are extracted from the work area by an adjustable extractor fan.

Set-up
Ensure the machine is stable before starting it.
Set up the machine on a level, firm and clear work surface.
The machine must be placed directly on the ground. Do not place wooden boards, flat pieces
of metal etc. underneath it.

Check the safety equipment before starting the machine.
Driven by electric motor (type E)
Machines with 400 V motor
The machine must only be operated on a 30 mA FI fault current protection circuit.
Work on electrical equipment must only be carried out by qualified electricians.
Type E9
Connect the machine to the mains:
▪ Mains voltage 400 V (50 Hz)
▪ Fuse 32 A (tripping characteristic C)
▪ Use a power supply cable with a cross-section of at least 6 mm².
This is only the minimum cable cross-section; the cross-section for longer cable runs
must be determined by a qualified electrician.
First, turn the switch to the Y position and wait for the motor to run up. Then turn the switch
to the delta position.

Note the rotation direction of the electric motor (see arrow on motor).
If the motor is rotating in the wrong direction:
A phase inverter in the plug controls the direction of rotation of the motor (press in the disc
in the plug with a screwdriver and turn 180˚).

A tight plug connection can rip the CEE plug out of the switch housing.
▪ This can be remedied using standard plugs and a silicone spray.
Any such damage to the switch is not covered by the guarantee.
Brake switch:
Cannot be switched on during the braking process.
The tool must stop moving within 10 seconds of the machine being switched off.
If the brake switch is faulty, do not under any circumstances start the machine.
If the machine switches off due to an overload, do not operate the switch again for at least
60 seconds.
The switch must not be operated more than 5 times within a 10 minute period.
Driven by tractor via universal joint shaft (type
PZG)
▪ Assemble the machine on the three-point linkage of the tractor.
▪ Attach the universal joint shaft and secure with the safety chain.
▪ Clockwise rotation of the tractor PTO shaft.
▪ Turn the tractor's manual throttle to minimum.
▪ Slowly engage the tractor PTO shaft and allow the machine to start moving.
▪ Set the required PTO speed using the manual throttle.
Maximum PTO shaft speed:
▪ 700 rpm
The maximum PTO shaft speed must on no account be exceeded, otherwise the oil will
become too hot. This leads to premature wear and leaks in the pump, cylinder and hydraulic
pipes.
Before disengaging the universal joint shaft, set the manual throttle of the tractor to
minimum.
The universal joint shaft must be stored in the universal joint shaft linkage when it is
disconnected.

Setting the drive variants:

Swing the locking plate until you feel it engage.
If the machine is to be operated electrically, the locking plate must be locked to the PTO
shaft. If this is not done, then the machine will not turn on.

Swivel the adjustable extractor chute to the desired position before debarking commences.
The extraction zone can be altered by adjusting the deflector.
1. Activate the foot pedal and swivel the tapering device to the left until it latches into the
groove on the pedal.
2. Place the log on the adjusting device and slide it to the centre of the debarking disc. Do
not let the log sit on the worm shaft during the tapering operation.
– The adjusting device can be adjusted to the diameter of the log by loosening the
knurled nut.
3. Push the log against the adjusting device, one side of the log will be tapered.
4. Turn the log through 90° and press again against the adjusting device.
5. Repeat point 4 until the log is sufficiently tapered.

Swivel the adjustable extractor chute to the desired position before debarking commences.
The extraction zone can be altered by adjusting the deflector.
1. Swing the tapering device back out before you start debarking.
– When the foot pedal is pressed, the tapering device springs back into its starting
position.
2. Place the log on with its front end on the worm shaft.
– The debarking process is initiated automatically and the feeder starts up.
– The log can be held steady during the debarking process using the retaining clamp.
3. When you have debarked more than half the log, you must change the side you are
working on and take the log by the opposite side.

Setting the feeder blade

The feeder blade must be set so that the log rotates evenly about its own axis during feeder
movement and does not slip through.
▪ The position of the feeder blade can be changed using the feeder lever:
Position Function
0Strongest resistance of the feeder blade against the log. Feeder
speed is slow.
MAX Weakest resistance of the feeder blade against the log. Feeder
speed is fast.
The stronger the resistance of the feeder blade against the log, the more attractive and
even the debarked surface finish will be.

The log continues to be fed evenly along the debarking disc by the timber support while
changing position.
The timber support can be adjusted to accommodate logs of different lengths
▪ by pulling the spring bolt to unlock it and moving the support as required.
Holes can be found on the underside of the timber support. After moving the timber
support, ensure that the spring bolt engages in a hole.

The maximum debarking diameter can be set to between 20 and 25 cm.
▪ Undo the self-locking hexagon nut and move the lifting tube to the desired position.

After debarking the log can be chamfered using the chamfering device.
▪ Place the log on the timber support and the chamfering device and press against the
debarking disc.
▪ The log is chamfered by turning it evenly clockwise.
