or remove the product’ external foil label.
Thi warranty doe not cover and Proxim will not be liable for any damage or failure cau ed by mi u e, abu e,
act of God, accident , or other cau e beyond Proxim’ control, or claim by any entity other than the original
purcha er.
If, after in pection, Proxim determine there i a defect, Proxim will repair or replace the Harmony 802.11a
network adapter at no co t to you. To return defective merchandi e to Proxim, plea e call Proxim Technical
Support at 1-408-731-2640 to obtain a Return Merchandi e Authorization (RMA) number.

Warranty Return Policy
If you have a problem with a Harmony 802.11a CardBu Card (Model 8450) or a Harmony 802.11a PCI Card
(Model 8150), plea e call Proxim Technical Support at 1-408-731-2640. Proxim Technical Support will a i t
with re olving any technical difficultie you may have with your Proxim product.
After calling Proxim Technical Support, if your product i found to be defective, you may return the product to
Proxim after obtaining an RMA (Return Merchandi e Authorization) number. The product mu t be returned in
it original packaging. The RMA number hould be clearly marked on the out ide of the box. Proxim cannot be
held re pon ible for any product returned without an RMA number, and no product will be accepted without an
RMA number.

Chapter 1
Introduction
Congratulation on your purcha e of a Harmony 802.11a network adapter. The e
product are high performance wirele LAN adapter card that comply with the IEEE
802.11a tandard. Thi mean that they are interoperable with IEEE 802.11a
equipment from any manufacturer when operating in 802.11a mode. In addition, they
upport 2XTM mode*, which provide data rate of up to 108 Mbp .
The Harmony 802.11a CardBu Card (Model 8450) and the Harmony 802.11a PCI Card
(Model 8150) upport Window XP, Window 2000, Window Millennium Edition (ME),
Window 98 Second Edition (SE), and Window NT 4.0. Computer with a Harmony
802.11a network adapter in talled “look” like tandard network node to the
operating y tem.
The Harmony 802.11a network adapter can be u ed with other 802.11a device to
form a tand-alone wirele Ad Hoc network* or u ed in conjunction with a Harmony
infra tructure to provide mobile client with wirele acce to an Ethernet network.

The Harmony Family
The Harmony network adapter are member of a product family that provide a
complete wirele networking olution.
•The Harmony Access Point Controller Model 756 centralize the management,
ecurity, and filtering capabilitie of a wirele LAN. The Acce Point (AP) Con-
troller communicate with Harmony Acce Point over the Ethernet network to
provide wirele network acce for mobile client . The AP Controller can upport
multiple AP , even if each AP complie with a different wirele tandard.
•The Harmony Access Point i a networking bridge that operate at Layer 2 of the
OSI networking model. Working alone or in conjunction with a Harmony AP Con-
troller, the AP forward packet between it radio and the Ethernet network.
Three type of the Harmony Acce Point are available to upport the IEEE
802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, or OpenAir wirele tandard: the 8 2.11a Access Point
Models 8569/857 /8571, the 8 2.11b Access Point Models 855 /8551 and the
OpenAir Access Point Model 755 .
•The optional Harmony Power System Model 7562 provide DC power to Harmony
AP over the unu ed pin of a twi ted pair Ethernet cable.
•The Harmony 8 2.11a CardBus Card Model 845 i a wirele LAN adapter that
fit into a 32-bit CardBu lot in a laptop computer and complie with the IEEE
802.11a tandard.
•The Harmony PC Card i a wirele LAN adapter that fit into a PCMCIA Type II lot
in a laptop computer. Two model are available to upport the IEEE 802.11b
(843 Series) or OpenAir (743 Series) wirele tandard.
•The Harmony CompactFlash Card i a wirele LAN adapter that fit into a
CompactFla h lot in a Pocket PC. Two model are available to upport the IEEE
802.11b (Model 863 ) or OpenAir (Model 763 ) wirele tandard.
•The Harmony PCI Card i a wirele LAN adapter that fit into a tandard PCI
expan ion lot. Two model are available to upport the IEEE 802.11a (Model
815 ) or 802.11b (Model 811 ) wirele tandard.
•The Harmony OpenAir USB Adapter Model 723 i an OpenAir-compliant wire-
le LAN adapter that connect to a Window 98/ME/2000 computer’ Univer al
Serial Bu (USB) port.

To begin u ing a Harmony 802.11a network adapter, you mu t have the following
minimum requirement :
• A computer that meet the following pecification :
• Window XP, Window 2000, Window Millennium Edition (ME), Window 98
Second Edition (SE), or Window NT (Service Pack 6 or later)* in talled
• CardBu Card u er : PC Card expan ion lot (32-bit CardBu )

FCC Guidelines
Model 815 8 2.11a PCI Card Users:
It i the re pon ibility of the in taller and u er of the Harmony 802.11a PCI Card
Model 8150 to guarantee that the antenna are operated at lea t 20 centimeter from
any per on. Thi i nece ary to in ure that the product i operated in accordance
with the RF Guideline for Human Expo ure which have been adopted by the Federal
Communication Commi ion.
Radio Frequency Interference Requirements
The Harmony 802.11a CardBu Card, Model 8450, and the Harmony 802.11a PCI Card,
Model 8150, operate in the frequency range of 5.15 to 5.35 GHz; they are re tricted to
indoor u e due to their operation in the 5.15 to 5.25 GHz frequency range.
FCC 15.407(e) require that the e device be u ed indoor in the frequency range of
5.15 to 5.25 GHz to reduce the potential for harmful interference to co-channel Mobile
Satellite y tem . Therefore the device hould be u ed indoor only for channel 36,
40, 44, and 48 and when 2X mode i enabled, channel 42 and 50.

High power radar are allocated a primary u er of the 5.25 to 5.35 GHz and 5.65 to
5.85 GHz band. The e radar tation can cau e interference with and/or damage the
Harmony 802.11a CardBu Card and/or Harmony 802.11a PCI Card.

Industry Canada Guidelines
Model 815 8 2.11a PCI Card Users:
The Harmony 8150 802.11a PCI Card ha been de igned to operate with an antenna
having a maximum gain of 3 dBi. Antenna having a higher gain i trictly prohibited
per regulation of Indu try Canada. The required antenna impedance i 50 ohm . To
reduce potential radio interference to other u er , the antenna type and it gain
hould be o cho en that the equivalent i otropically radiated power (EIRP) i not
more than that required for ucce ful communication. The in taller of thi radio
equipment mu t en ure that the antenna i located or pointed uch that it doe not
emit RF field in exce of Health Canada limit for the general population; con ult
Safety Code 6, obtainable from Health Canada’ web ite http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/rpb.
Windows ME and Windows 98 SE Installation CD Requirement
Before beginning the in tallation of an 802.11a network adapter, confirm that you
have a Window 98 SE or Window ME in tallation CD available (depending on the
computer’ operating y tem). Window 98/ME u er may be prompted to in ert a
Window CD during the in tallation.
You hould not need a Window CD when in talling an 802.11a network adapter in a
Window XP, 2000, or NT computer.
If you do not have a Window 98/ME CD, it i po ible that you already have the
Window in tallation file on your hard di k. The e Window in tallation file are
known a Window Cabinet or CAB file . The Cabinet file are commonly located in
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\
or
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\
.
Note: Window 98/ME u er may need the Window CD or Cabinet file to com-
plete the in tallation of an 802.11a network adapter. Proxim recommend
that you do not proceed with the in tallation until you have confirmed that
you have one of the e Window in tallation media available.

Windows NT Laptops Require a Plug-and-Play Utility
A Window NT laptop mu t have a third-party Plug-and-Play utility in talled in order to
u e the 802.11a CardBu Card. One popular Plug-and-Play utility for Window NT 4.0
i CardWizard from Sy temSoft. See http://www.systemsoft.com for detail .
Note to Customers Using a Laptop Without a CD-ROM Drive
If you are in talling the 802.11a CardBu Card in a laptop that doe not have a CD-ROM
drive or if your CD-ROM drive i an external device that hare a ingle CardBu lot
with network adapter card , you hould follow the tep below prior to in talling the
802.11a CardBu Card:
1. Window 98/ME u er : Confirm that the Window cabinet (CAB) file are
in talled on the computer. The CAB file are typically located in
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\
or
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\
.
2. Window 98/ME u er : If the computer doe not have the CAB file in talled,
copy the
Win98
or
Win9x
folder found on the Window CD-ROM to a temporary
folder on the computer.
3. Copy the content of the Harmony 802.11a In tallation CD-ROM to a temporary
folder on the computer. Alternatively, you may download the oftware from
Proxim’ Web ite at
http://www.proxim.com/support/.
4. Follow the in tallation in truction contained in thi chapter. When the
in truction call for either the Window CD or the Harmony In tallation CD, earch
the CAB file or the temporary folder you created in Step #2 and 3.
5. When the in tallation i complete, remove the temporary folder you created in
Step #2 and 3 from the computer’ hard drive.

Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
The in truction below de cribe how to in tall a Harmony 802.11a network adapter by
running the Harmony In tallation program before in erting the adapter into the
computer. The Harmony In tallation program in tall the Harmony Utility fir t, and
then it in tall the Harmony 802.11a network adapter and driver. If you in erted an
802.11a adapter before running the Harmony In tallation program, ee “Adapter
In erted Before Running the In tallation Program” on page 59 for in truction .
Follow the e tep to in tall a Harmony 802.11a network adapter in a Window 98 SE,
Window ME, Window 2000, or Window XP computer.
1. Turn on the computer and logon to Window , if applicable.
2. In ert the Harmony In tallation CD into the computer’ CD-ROM drive.
3. If the Harmony In tallation program doe not launch automatically, run
SETUP.EXE
from the Harmony In tallation CD to launch the program, hown in the
following example.
4. Click Next to continue.
5. Select a de tination folder for the Harmony Utility file and click Next to continue.

6. Enter a name for the utility’ Program Manager group and click Next.
7. Cl i ck Next to in tall the utility.
8. Click Finish to view additional information about the utility.
Note: To avoid viewing the additional information, uncheck the Read
Harmony
configuration instructions box before clicking Finish.
9. Click Finish to complete the Harmony Utility in tallation and to continue the
in tallation of a Harmony 802.11a network adapter.
10. The Harmony Device Setup wizard will prompt you to in ert a Harmony 802.11a
network adapter, a hown below.
Harmony 8 2.11a CardBus Card users: In ert the CardBu Card into an available
CardBu lot and proceed to Step #11.
Harmony 8 2.11a PCI Card users: Follow the e tep :
• Click Cancel.
• Shut down the computer, unplug it power cord from the wall outlet, and
remove the computer cover.
• Locate an unu ed PCI lot and refer to your PC’ manual for in truction on how
to remove the plate that cover the lot (if applicable).
• Feed the card’ antenna through the PCI lot and out the back of the
computer.
• Align the PCI Card over the empty lot and firmly in ert the card into the lot.
See page 59 for a ample illu tration.

• Secure the card’ metal bracket to the computer following the direction pro-
vided in your PC’ manual and replace the computer cover.
• Plug the computer’ power cord back into the wall outlet.
• Attach the cabled antenna to the antenna ba e and place it on top of your
de k, computer, or monitor.
• Turn on the computer and proceed to Step #11.
11. Follow the on- creen in truction to in tall the network adapter. Note the
following:
• Window XP u er : If prompted, elect Install the software automatically
(Recommended) and click Next.
• Window 98/ME u er : If prompted to identify the location of the file

12. Re tart the computer if prompted. Otherwi e, click Close when prompted that
the Harmony 802.11a network adapter ha been properly configured.
Note: If the Harmony Device Setup program or Window Networking report that
the Harmony 802.11a network adapter ha not been properly configured, fol-
low the on- creen in truction and refer to Chapter 6 for trouble hooting
ugge tion .
13. The Harmony Utility’ Statu Monitor icon will appear in Window Ta kbar, a
hown below.

If you have one or more 802.11a Acce Point , configure the Harmony 802.11a
network adapter’ Network Mode to Infra tructure. If your network con i t of only
802.11a client adapter , et Network Mode to Ad Hoc.

Windows NT
Follow the e tep to in tall a Harmony 802.11a network adapter in a computer
running Window NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6 or later).
1. Turn on the computer and logon to Window , if applicable.
2. In ert the Harmony In tallation CD into the computer’ CD-ROM drive.
3. If the Harmony In tallation program doe not launch automatically, run
SETUP.EXE
from the Harmony In tallation CD to launch the program, hown in the
following example.
4. Click Next to continue.
5. Select a de tination folder for the Harmony Utility file and click Next to continue.
6. Enter a name for the utility’ Program Manager group and click Next.
7. Cl i ck Next to in tall the utility.
8. Click Finish to view additional information about the utility.
Note: To avoid viewing the additional information, uncheck the Read
Harmony
configuration instructions box before clicking Finish.
9. Click Finish to complete the Harmony Utility in tallation and to continue the
in tallation of a Harmony 802.11a network adapter.

10. Click Install when prompted by the Harmony Device Setup creen, hown below.
Note: Proxim recommend that you let the in tallation wizard in tall the card for
you. However, if you want to in tall the adapter manually, click Control
Panel to open the Network creen’ Adapter window. Click OK after you
have manually in talled the adapter to return to the in tallation wizard.
11. When the Micro oft TCP/IP Propertie creen appear , elect the Harmony
802.11a Network Adapter from the li t of network adapter and configure it IP
etting (a required by your network).

12. Click OK to ave the TCP/IP etting .
13. Click No when prompted to re tart the computer.
14. Click OK to clo e the Harmony Device Setup creen.
15. Shut down the computer.
16. In tall the Harmony 802.11a network adapter in the computer.
Harmony 8 2.11a CardBus Card users: In ert the CardBu Card into an available
CardBu lot. The laptop mu t have a third-party Plug-and-Play utility in talled.
See “Window NT Laptop Require a Plug-and-Play Utility” on page 14 for detail .
Harmony 8 2.11a PCI Card users: Follow the e tep :
• Unplug the computer’ power cord from the wall outlet.
• Remove the computer cover.
• Locate an unu ed PCI lot and refer to your PC’ manual for in truction on how
to remove the plate that cover the lot (if applicable).
• Feed the card’ antenna through the PCI lot and out the back of the
computer.
• Align the PCI Card over the empty lot and firmly in ert the card into the lot.
See page 59 for a ample illu tration.
• Secure the card’ metal bracket to the computer following the direction pro-
vided in your PC’ manual and replace the computer cover.
• Plug the computer’ power cord back into the wall outlet.
• Attach the cabled antenna to the antenna ba e and place it on top of your
de k, computer, or monitor.
17. Turn on the computer.
18. The Statu Monitor icon will appear in Window Ta kbar, a hown below.
19. The Harmony 802.11a network adapter i now ready for u e. U e the Harmony
Utility (de cribed in Chapter 5) to configure the adapter and determine if it i

Note: If Window Networking report that the Harmony 802.11a network adapter
ha not been properly configured, follow the on- creen in truction and
refer to Chapter 6 for trouble hooting ugge tion .
