Introduction
Your RadioShack 56K Compact Flash Modem lets you connect
a Microsoft Windows CE-operated Pocket PC (such as the
Compaq iPAQ) to the Internet and send and receive e-mail. The
modem is light and compact, and conveniently fits in your pock-
et. The modem is easy to install (using the supplied RJ-11 ca-
ble).

Connecting Hardware
1. Firmly insert the compact modem's connector into the slot
on top of the Pocket PC. Use the arrow on the label's front
end as a guide for proper insertion.
2. Insert the supplied RJ-11 modular cable plug into the
modem's modular socket.
3. Insert the modular cable's other end into a standard tele-
phone line outlet.

Setting Up an Internet
Service Provider Connection
To configure your Internet device for a local ISP (Internet Ser-
vice Provider), you must enter the following information. You
can obtain this information from your existing ISP:
• Dial-in username
• Dial-in password
• E-mail log-in username
• Local access phone number
• Alt DNS (Domain Name Server)
• POP3 (Post Office Protocol) mail host
• SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server
Notes:
• If you use AOL, you can connect to the home page, but not
to AOL services or e-mail.
• If you use MSNTM, connect to the home page (http://
www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/stepbystep/
msnemail.asp) to download and install a patch that
enables you to connect to MSN services and e-mail. With-
out the patch, you cannot access MSN services or e-mail.

1. On your Pocket PC, select Start/Settings.
The

2. Select Connections, then select the Modem icon. The
Modem Connections
screen appears..
3. Select New Connection. The

4. Enter the name of your ISP (such as AT&T WorldNet) in the

9. Be sure Use server-assigned IP address, Use software com-
pression, and Use IP header compression are all selected.
10. Select Name Servers. The second
Advanced

11. Select Use specific server address.
12. Enter the DNS numbers provided by your ISP in the
DNS
(Domain Name Server) text box.
Note: Most ISPs do not require adjusting server address
settings.
13. Enter the DNS numbers provided by your ISP in the
Alt
DNS
text box.
14. Leave the
WINS
box set to 0.0.0.0.
15. Leave the
Alt WINS
box set to 0.0.0.0.
16. Click ok. You are returned to the

17. Select Next. The
My Connection
screen appears.
18. Enter your local ISP access area code and phone number
in the
Area code
and
Phone number
text boxes. Check with
your local telephone company to make sure that the num-
ber you choose is a local number.
19. Select Next, then Finish.
20. Click ok.

CONNECTING TO AN ISP
1. Select Start/Programs. The
Connections
screen appears.
2. Select Connections, then select the icon for your ISP (in
this example the icon is My Connection). The
My Connec-
tion
screen appears.

3. Enter your name in the
User name
text box.
4. Enter your password in the
Password
text box.
5. Leave the
Domain
text box blank.
Note: If you are dialing into a corporate network, you may
need to add information in the
Domain
text box.
6. Select Save password.
7. Verify Phone is correct. If the phone number is not correct,
select Dialing Options... and make the necessary changes.
8. Select Home or Work from the
Dial from
drop-down list.

9. Select Connect. The connection status appears. Your
pocket PC beeps and a
Connected
dialog box appears
when connection is achieved. Select Hide Status to hide the
Connected
window.
10. To disconnect your ISP at any time, select Start/Today to go
to the
Today
screen and select the double computer icon at
the bottom of the screen.
11. Select Disconnect from the dialog box that appears.
CONNECTING TO A WEBSITE
1. After your Pocket PC is connected to your ISP, select Start/
Internet Explorer. The
Pocket Internet Explorer
home page
appears.

2. Type the desired website address at the top of the screen.
Note: If you do not see the address bar, select View/
Address Bar.
3. Select Go to go to the selected site.
Note: If you are connecting to a Remote Access Server
(RAS), you might need to configure a proxy server.

USING E-MAIL
1. After your Pocket PC is connected to your ISP, select Start/
Inbox. The
Inbox
screen appears.
2. Select Services/New Service. The
Service Name
screen
appears.

3. Depending on your specific ISP settings, choose POP3 Mail
or IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol) Mail from the
Service type
drop-down list.
Note: IMAP4 mail is typically used in a corporate environ-
ment, while POP3 mail is more frequently used by ISPs.

Service name
set to its accompanying default.

5. Select Next. The
Service (1/4)
screen appears..
6. Select or type the name of your ISP in the
Connection
drop-down list.
7. Type the name of your POP3 or IMAP4 server in the
Server
text box.
8. Type your e-mail log-in username provided by your ISP in
the
User ID
text box.
9. Type your e-mail log-in password provided by your ISP in
the
Password
text box.
Note: The e-mail log-in and dial-in username/password are
usually the same. However, some ISPs require a different
username/password for dial-in and e-mail.

10. Select Save Password.
11. Select Next. The
Service (2/4)
screen appears.
12. Leave the
Domain
text box blank.
Note: If you are connecting with RAS,
Domain
is usually
populated.
13. Type the name of your SMTP host provided by your ISP in
the
SMTP host for sending mail
box. For example, with
AT&T WorldNet, SMTP host is mailhost.worldnet.att.net.
Note: The POP3 and SMTP hosts may be the same or dif-
ferent depending on the ISP.
14. Type your e-mail address in the Return address
box.

15. Select Next, then select Next again. The
Service (4/4)
screen appears.
16. Select Get message headers only or Get full copy of
messages from the drop-down list at the top of the screen.
17. Select Receive meeting requests or Select file attachments.
18. Select Finish.
19. Click ok.
20. Select Services/Connect to send and receive e-mail.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts or the exclusion or
limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may
not apply to you.
In the event of a product defect during the warranty period, take the product and the
RadioShack sales receipt as proof of purchase date to any RadioShack store. RadioShack will,
at its option, unless otherwise provided by law: (a) correct the defect by product repair without
charge for parts and labor; (b) replace the product with one of the same or similar design; or (c)
refund the purchase price. All replaced parts and products, and products on which a refund is
made, become the property of RadioShack. New or reconditioned parts and products may be
used in the performance of warranty service. Repaired or replaced parts and products are war-
ranted for the remainder of the original warranty period. You will be charged for repair or re-
placement of the product made after the expiration of the warranty period.
This warranty does not cover: (a) damage or failure caused by or attributable to acts of God,
abuse, accident, misuse, improper or abnormal usage, failure to follow instructions, improper in-
stallation or maintenance, alteration, lightning or other incidence of excess voltage or current;
(b) any repairs other than those provided by a RadioShack Authorized Service Facility; (c) con-
sumables such as fuses or batteries; (d) cosmetic damage; (e) transportation, shipping or insur-
ance costs; or (f) costs of product removal, installation, set-up service adjustment or
reinstallation.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary
from state to state.
