theBGANsatellite-andyouareonline.

The BGAN system
What is BGAN?
TheBroadbandGlobalAreaNetwork(BGAN)isamobilesatelliteservicethatoffershigh-speed
dataupto492kbpsandvoicetelephony.BGANenablesuserstoaccesse-mail,corporate
networksandtheInternet,transferfilesandmaketelephonecalls.
Coverage
TheInmarsat®BGANservicesarebasedongeostationarysatellitessituatedabovetheequator.
Eachsatellitecoversacertainarea(footprint).Thecoveragemapbelowshowsthefootprintsofthe
BGANsystem.
ThemapdepictsInmarsat'sexpectationsofcoverage,butdoesnotrepresenta
guaranteeofservice.Theavailabilityofserviceattheedgeofcoverageareasfluctuates
dependingonvariousconditions.
The launch of the F3 satellite (POR) will be determined in due course.

Overview of the BGAN system
AcompleteBGANsystemmayincludetheEXPLORER300withconnectedperipherals,theBGAN
satellite,andtheSatelliteAccessStation(SAS).Thesatellitesaretheconnectionbetweenyour

Supported services
The services currently supported by BGAN comprise:

Packet data service
The BGAN network supports different classes of data connection to the Internet.

UsingaStandarddataconnection,severaluserscansharethedataconnection
simultaneously.Thistypeofconnectionisidealfore-mail,filetransfer,andInternetand
intranetaccess.Theuserpaysfortheamountofdatasentandreceived.
k.
UsingaStreamingdataconnection,yougetanexclusive,high-priorityconnection,ensuring
seamlesstransferofdata.Thistypeofconnectionisidealfortimecriticalapplicationslikelive
videooverIP.Theuserpaysforthedurationoftheconnection(perminutecharge).
Circuit switched (dialed) service
Two types of circuit switched connection are available:

StandardVoice.Alow-tariffconnectionforvoiceonly.Thevoicesignaliscompressedto
4.0 kbps, which reduces the bandwidth use and consequently the tariff.
m.
3.1kHzAudio.AhighqualityconnectionwhichcanbeusedforPremiumVoice,G3fax,
analog modem orISDN.
The signal is uncompressed 3.1 kHz audio, which allows for optimum voice quality.
SMS service
The BGAN system provides a Short Messaging Service (SMS) for sending and receiving messages.

Overview
The EXPLORER 300 provides interfaces for connection of a phone or a computer.
Using the interfaces on page 48 describes how to use each of the available .
Minimizing power consumption
The EXPLORER 300 is designed for minimum power consumption. This means that functions that
are not currently used will automatically go into a “sleep mode” to minimize the power
consumption.
Inadditiontothisautomaticsleepmodefunction,youcandisableeachoftheinterfacesiftheyare
notcurrentlyused.Note,however,thatyouwillnotbeabletousetheseinterfacesuntilyou
enablethemagain.Forinformationonhowtoenable/disableinterfaces,seeEnablingordisabling.

controlterminalsintheBGANsystem.LaunchPadisprovidedontheInmarsatBGANCD-ROM
suppliedwithyourEXPLORER300.ForinformationonhowtousetheLaunchPad,refertothe
manualontheInmarsatCD-ROM.
Additionally, it is possible to control the EXPLORER 300 using AT Commands. Refer to Appendix B,
AT commands.
Compass
TheEXPLORER300alsoprovidesacompasstohelppositioningthe
antenna.Forfurtherinformationonhowtousethecompass,see
Pointingtheantennaonpage21.
SIM card
TheSIM(SubscriberIdentityModule)cardusedfortheEXPLORER300isastandardSIMcard,
whichisacquiredfromtheAirtimeProvider.
TheEXPLORER300requiresaSIMcardtogoonlineandtoaccessthesettingsofthe
EXPLORER300.WithoutaSIMcardyoucanonlyseetheMainscreenofthedisplaysystem
showing battery status etc. Using the web, you can view the properties of the
EXPLORER300anduploadsoftwarewithoutinsertingaSIMcard.Uploadofsoftware,however,
requiresanAdministratorusernameandpassword.

Inserting the SIM card
TheEXPLORER300isdeliveredwiththebatteryseparatedfromtheterminal.Ifthebatteryis
alreadyinserted,removeitasdescribedinRemovingthebatteryonpage13.
The SIM card is provided by your Airtime Provider. Insert the SIM card as follows:

InserttheSIMcardintotheSIMslot.Make
suretheSIMcardispositionedasshown!

Pressgentlyuntilitclicks.
3.
SlidethelocktoclosetheSIMslot.
Inserting the battery
Do as follows:

Insertthebattery.
Makesurethebatteryispositionedcorrectlyas
shown.

Pressgentlyuntilitlocks.
Beforeusingtheterminalthefirsttime:Toensureaccurateinformationonthebattery
capacityyoushouldfullycharge,thenfullydischargethebattery(untilthe
EXPLORER 300 closes down automatically), and finally recharge the battery. The
EXPLORER 300 can be used during the discharging process, but the remaining battery
capacity may not be displayed correctly.
