RIOT CLOUDLINK AI V1 User manual

QUICK START GUIDE
FOR THE
RIOT CLOUDLINK AI V1
The following is a guide on how to provision your RIOT CloudLink device to connect to your local
home or office WI-FI. Assuming that this is the first start-up of the RIOT CloudLink and no previous
Wi-Fi networks were provisioned.

It is important to note that during the setup procedure your mobile phone will switch back and forth
between WIFI networks. Your mobile data (as well as any mobile phone hotspots) need to be turned
off for the duration of this setup procedure. Before the procedure is started, your mobile phone
needs to be connected to your local home / office WI-FI network and the “Auto reconnect” setting
must be enabled for this network.
Go to Settings on your phone. Click Connections -> WiFi, then settings button on the active
Home/Office Wifi. Ensure Auto Reconnect is enbled.

Config mode AP (AKA configuration via RIOT’s own WI-FI):
1. All Dip SW in the off position
2. Power up the device
3. Wait for “Status LED” to start flashing
4. Press and hold the “mode button” for about 5 seconds until you hear the buzzer
5. Release the “mode button”
6. The RIOT Cloud Link will now enter “config mode AP”, after +-30 seconds using your mobile
phone scan your Wi-Fi network and look for the RIOT_CloudLink_V… Wi-Fi
7. Once the RIOT CloudLink wifi is selected (no password required) your mobile phone may
prompt you that no internet is available from the selected network, please acknowledge the
notification by selecting “Keep WI-FI connection”

8. Once the mobile phone has successfully connected to RIOT CloudLink then,
a. For Android device click the settings button and then select “Manage router”
i. You will now automatically be diverter to the next step
b. For IOS open Safari and type the address 192.168.4.1
c. Or scan this QR code

9. Once the page is loaded (note refresh the page if it does not load the first time or if you
want the RIOT CloudLink to rescan for available home / office WI-FI networks) take note of
the available networks and their respective RSSI (signal strength and quality).
10. Select the WIFI network that you want the RIOT CloudLink to use and then enter the
password and press the save button.
a. If there are multiple networks that you are able to use then select the one with the
lowest RSSI (ie the one as high up in the list as possible).
b. RIOT does not guarantee the operation of the device if the RSSI of the network
selected is worse than 60 dBm. Ask RIOT about its external antenna option for the
CloudLink or consider installing a signal booster closer to the RIOT CloudLink device.
11. A popup will appear while the RIOT CloudLink is attempting to connect to the selected
home/ office network with the provided credentials.
a. If successful the pop up will display “Connected!”, the RIOT CloudLink will turn off its
own WIFI hotspot (ie RIOT_CloudLink_V… Wi-Fi) and start a 20 second count down.
b. At this point your mobile phone should now automatically reconnect to the home /
office wifi network.
c. Please take note of the new IP address that the local home/ office Wi-Fi router has
given the RIOT CloudLink

12. After the count down timer reaches 0 the browser will automatically be diverted to the new
IP address. If this automatic step has failed, then please enter the new IP address manually
as seen in the previous step.
a. The device has now entered “config mode STA”
13. Once the configuration webpage for STA mode has been loaded at at the new address
assigned by local home / office router DHCP, 3 new TABS will be available at the top right of
the screen. (W) –WIFI settings, (S) –Settings and (E) –Exit and save.
14. Go to the settings tab (S), and make sure that the Token for portal.riotsystems.cloud has
been automatically assigned. Do not change this line is there is a Token assigned already.
a. If you later want to move the device to a different riotsystems.cloud account, you
can update the Cloud token here.
15. Select the Exit tab (E) and save the configuration

IMPORTANT: If the configuration has taken too long or connection is lost the device will
automatically exit the configuration mode after 5 minutes.
If configuration mode is entered after the device has connected to the home / office WI-FI network,
it will skip the Config mode AP (Step 1 to 12) and go straight to config mode STA (step 13). If you
have forgotten the IP address assigned to the device on day 1 you may need to use a free network
scanner tool from the App store such as
“https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodidea.network.ipscanner”
to scan for the device. The device name will appear as “espressif”
Config mode:
•When the Status LED is flashing the device has exited config mode
•If the WI-FI led is off (device is not connected to the local home / office WI-FI), when pushing
the mode button for 5 seconds the device will enter Config mode AP (Steps 1 to 12)
•If the WI-FI led is on (device is connected to the local home / office WI-FI), when pushing the
mode button for 5 seconds the device will enter Config mode STA (Steps 13 to 15)
After successfully connecting the RIOT CloudLink to Local home / Office WI-FI, the Device dashboard
and Remote Monitoring data can then be accessed at https://portal.riotsystems.cloud/login
