All Magnetic Compasses are vulnerable to
magnetic interference, which will produce errors,
called DEVIATION. It is the Owner/Operator
and/or Helmsman’s responsibility to make sure the
compass is properly installed and compensated.
COMPENSATION is the act of correcting for deviation. Magnets
(speakers, microphones etc.), ferrous metals (steel, iron, etc.) and
current carrying devices are common causes of deviation. It is
important to understand that magnetic compasses point toward
Magnetic North. There is a difference between Magnetic North and
True North, and that difference is called VARIATION. Variation
differs depending on your geographical location and can be
determined by referring to a local chart.
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY
BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALLATION.
The XP-95, XP-98 & XP-99 compasses are not equipped with
internal compensators. Care should be taken to select a mounting
location that causes the least error in the compass readings. External
deck magnets will be needed if you intend to compensate your
compass.
Selecting the Proper Location
Select a location that has the least amount of deviation on any of the
four cardinal points (N, S, E and W).
The compass should be close enough to the helmsman and
positioned below the helmsman's line of sight so it is easily read
during normal operation.
You will need a flat level surface to mount the compass. If your
mounting surface does not meet the requirements for your
installation you may be able to rectify the situation with a custom
made fairing block.
Testing Your Chosen Location
Use your compass to test a location. Begin your test by holding the
compass away from any possible interference and observing the
compass reading. Then move the compass into position carefully
keeping it pointed in the same direction. If the compass reading is
different, without a change in direction, you are observing deviation.
Installation
Great care must be taken to mount the compass so that it is aligned
with the keel of the boat. An alignment error is a constant error on
all headings caused by the compass not being pointed in the same
direction as the boat.
Using the mounting template supplied, drill two (2) 7/64” (2.8mm)
pilot holes in the desired mounting location and insert the # 6
fasteners selected. Do not fully tighten. Leave the heads high
enough (approx. ¼”) to accept the gasket and compass bezel. Next,
remove the movable bezel ring. Remove the peel and stick covering
from the foam gasket and apply the sticky surface of the gasket to
the bottom of the compass. Be sure to line-up the slots for the
fasteners in the gasket with the slots in the base. (Note: The foam
gasket can also be applied to the deck or mounting location,
however, it may be subject to loss or damage.) To install the
compass, simply place the fastener slots of the base over the heads of
the fasteners. Push the compass down and turn clockwise to lock on.
The fit should be snug enough to hold the compass securely.
Tighten or loosen the fasteners as necessary so that the compass can
be removed by pushing down and turning counterclockwise. When
adjusted, snap the movable bezel back in place.
Important Notes:
•Make sure that there are no wires or objects of any kind behind
where you intend to drill.
•Mounting Screw threads should be coated with a marine grade
sealant just before installation.
•If you wish to make the installation permanent, drill two more
7/64”pilot holes and install the last 2 screws.
•If you choose to add the Optional Light Kit, the compass must
be installed permanently.
XP-98 Operation
To see wind shifts (lifts and headers)
The dial is divided into four sections, two blue and two white with 0
to 8 delineated in 5-degree markings. Sail up wind before the race
on port tack and on starboard tack. Write down the median heading
(blue 4 e.g.) on each. You should note the reading on port tack goes
up when lifted and on starboard the reading goes down when lifted.
The CourseMinder Bezel helps orient you to the racecourse. Dial in
the course to the leeward mark and when you round the windward
mark you know exactly where to head using the compass section on
top. Also downwind you can use the compass portion to see lifts
and headers downwind.
Reminders:
• Tack on 5-degree headers and you will see a real improvement in
your racing
• Apparent wind forward is good.
XP-99 Operation
The movable bezel is designed to be a visual reminder of the
heading to your destination. Turn the bezel ring until the intended
heading is lined up with the lubber line. To steer to the destination
simply turn the boat until the same heading on the compass dial lines
up with the lubber line.
Warranty
We warrant all Ritchie Magnetic Marine Compasses to be free of
defects in workmanship or materials. If within five years of
purchase date, a compass fails to give satisfactory service, it will be
repaired or replaced without charge. This warranty does not cover
breakage through accident or misuse. Replacement or repair will be
made if the instrument is returned prepaid to a Ritchie Service
Station or directly to E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Inc., 243 Oak Street,
Pembroke, MA 02359.

Choisir l'emplacement adéquat

lors du fonctionnement normal.
Vous avez besoin d'une surface plane pour monter le XP-95, XP-98 &
XP-99. Si votre surface de montage n'est pas adaptée, vous pouvez
rectifier ce problème en utilisant un bloc d’ajustement spécial.
Tester l'emplacement choisi
Utilisez votre compas pour tester un emplacement. Commencez
votre test en tenant votre compas à l'écart de toute source
d'interférence éventuelle et en lisant la mesure. Placez ensuite avec
précaution le compas, en vous assurant qu'il pointe dans la même
direction. Si la mesure du compas diffère sans que celui-ci pointe
dans une autre direction, vous observez une déviation.
Installation
Vous devez absolument monter le compas de manière à ce qu'il soit
aligné avec la quille du bateau. Une erreur d'alignement faussera de
manière permanente tous les caps puisque le compas ne pointe pas
dans la même direction que le bateau.
Remarques importantes :
•Assurez-vous qu'il n'y a aucun objet ou fil électrique à l'endroit
où vous devez percer des trous.
•Les pas de vis de fixation doivent être enduits d'obturant de
qualité marine juste avant l'installation.
•Si vous souhaitez que l'installation devienne permanente,
utilisez les deux dernières vis.
•Si vous choisissez d'ajouter le kit d'éclairage optionnel, le
compas doit être installé de manière permanente.
En utilisant le modèle de montage fourni, percez deux (2) 2.8mm
trous de départ dans l'emplacement de montage souhaité puis insérez
les six attaches n°6 choisis. Ne serrez pas à fond. Laissez les têtes
dépasser d'environ 6,3 mm (1/4 po) de la longueur afin de pouvoir
insérer le joint et la lunette du compas. Retirez ensuite la lunette
amovible. Retirez la languette autocollante du joint en mousse et
appliquez la surface collante du joint sous le compas. Assurez-vous
que les encoches du joint sont alignées avec celles de la base.
(Remarque : le joint en mousse peut également être appliqué sur le
pont ou sur l'emplacement de montage, mais au risque de le perdre
ou de l'endommager.) Pour installer le compas, il vous suffit de
placer les encoches de la base sur les têtes des attaches. Appuyez sur
le compas et tournez dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre pour
verrouiller. L'ensemble devrait suffire à maintenir solidement le
compas. Serrez ou desserrez les attaches pour retirer le compas an
appuyant dessus et en tournant dans le sens inverse des aiguilles
d'une montre. Une fois l'ajustement terminé, replacez la lunette
amovible.
Fonctionnement XP-98
Pour voir les sautes de vent (risées adonnantes et refusantes)
Le cadran est divisé en quatre sections (deux bleues et deux
blanches) allant de 0 à 8 avec des graduations de 5 degrés. Avant la
course, naviguez au vent à bâbord et à tribord. Notez le cap médian
(bleu 4, par exemple) de chaque côté. La mesure monte à bâbord
dans le cas d'une adonnante et descend à tribord dans le cas d'une
refusante.
La lunette CourseMinder vous permet de vous orienter par rapport
au sens de la course. Mettez le cap sur la bouée sous le vent. Lorsque
vous passez celle-ci, vous savez exactement quelle direction prendre
en utilisant la section du compas sur le pont. Vous pouvez également
utiliser la portion du compas pour voir les adonnantes et les
refusantes sous le vent.
Rappels :
• Virez dans les refusantes de 5 degrés pour améliorer votre
navigation de manière notable
•Le vent apparent avant est bon.
Fonctionnement XP-99
La lunette amovible est un indicateur visuel du cap de votre
destination. Tournez l'anneau de lunette jusqu'à ce que le cap à
suivre soit aligné avec la ligne de foi. Pour barrer vers la destination
choisie, il vous suffit de virer jusqu'à ce que le même cap du cadran
du compas soit aligné avec la ligne de foi.

ricordare che le bussole magnetiche puntano verso il nord
magnetico. Tra il nord magnetico e il nord geografico esiste una
differenza di valore detta VARIAZIONE. La variazione cambia in
base alla posizione geografica e può essere determinata riferendosi a
una tabella locale.
Le bussole XP-95, XP-98 & XP-99 non sono dotate di compensatore
interno. Scegliere l'area di installazione con cura, onde evitare errori
di lettura.Per eseguire la compensazione della bussola, occorre
installare dei magneti a ponte esterni.
Scelta dell'area di installazione
Scegliere un'area caratterizzata da una deviazione minima per
ciascuno dei quattro punti cardinali (N, S, E e O).
La bussola deve essere vicina al timoniere e posizionata al di sotto
del suo livello visivo per agevolare la lettura durante il
funzionamento normale.

ATTENTION :
Montare la XP-95, XP-98 & XP-99 su una superficie piana. Se la
superficie di montaggio non risponde ai requisiti di installazione,
regolarla utilizzando una carenatura adatta.

ATTENZIONE:
Prova dell'area scelta
Utilizzare una bussola per testare l'area scelta. Tenere la bussola
lontana da possibili interferenze e osservarne la lettura. Spostarla
quindi in posizione, prestando attenzione a mantenerla puntata nella
stessa direzione. Se la lettura varia pur mantenendo la stessa
direzione, significa che è presente una deviazione.
Installazione
Durante il montaggio della bussola, accertarsi che sia allineata alla
chiglia. L'errore di allineamento è molto frequente ed è causato
dalla divergenza tra la direzione della bussola e la rotta
dell'imbarcazione.
Facendo riferimento al modello di montaggio in dotazione, praticare
due (2) 2.8mm fori principali nell'area di installazione desiderata,
quindi inserire i fermi n. 6. Non serrare completamente. Lasciare la
parte superiore dei fermi a una distanza sufficiente (circa ¼”) per
poter installare la guarnizione e la ghiera della bussola. Rimuovere
l'anello della ghiera. Rimuovere la copertura adesiva dalla parte
spugnosa della guarnizione e applicare quest'ultima sulla base della
bussola. Accertarsi che gli alloggi dei fermi presenti sulla
guarnizione combacino con gli alloggi della base. Nota: è inoltre
possibile applicare la guarnizione in gomma al ponte o all'area di
montaggio, tuttavia potrebbero verificarsi danneggiamenti. Per
installare la bussola, posizionare gli alloggi dei fermi al di sopra
della parte superiore dei fermi. Premere la bussola verso il basso e

ruotarla in senso orario per bloccarla. La bussola rimane in
posizione. Stringere o allentare i fermi per consentire alla bussola di
essere rimossa premendola verso il basso e ruotandola in senso
antiorario. Al termine, fare scattare la ghiera rimovibile in posizione.
Note importanti:
•Accertarsi che non siano presenti cavi o oggetti di qualsiasi tipo
nell'area da forare.
•Prima dell'installazione, è consigliabile rivestire i filetti delle
viti di montaggio con un sigillante marino.
•Se si desidera rendere permanente l'installazione, installare
anche le ultime 2 viti.
Uso di XP-98
Per visualizzare i cambiamenti di direzione del vento (portanza e
direzione)
La rosa è divisa in quattro sezioni, due blu e due bianche, con tacche
di 5 gradi che vanno da 0 a 8. Navigare con il vento in avanti con le
mure a babordo o a tribordo. Annotare la rotta mediana (ad es. blu 4)
per ciascuna. La lettura a babordo aumenta con l'aumento della
portanza mentre quella a tribordo diminuisce con l'aumento della
portanza.
La ghiera CourseMinder fornisce un importante supporto di
orientamento. Spostarsi nella direzione indicata dal contrassegno
sottovento; una volta raggiunto il punto del contrassegno sopravento
sarà possibile visualizzare nella sezione superiore della bussola
l'esatta direzione della rotta. È inoltre possibile utilizzare la sezione
della bussola sottovento per visualizzare le variazioni sottovento.

•Virare la direzione di 5 gradi per un miglioramento

Uso di XP-99
La ghiera rimovibile funge da promemoria visivo della rotta a
destinazione. Ruotare l'anello della ghiera fino ad allineare la rotta
desiderata con la linea di fede. Per pilotare fino a destinazione,
ruotare l'imbarcazione fino ad allineare la rotta della rosa della
bussola con la linea di fede.

interferencias magnéticas, las indicaciones de
las brújulas arrojan un error conocido como
DESVIACIÓN. En el barco, los responsables
de constatar que la brújula esté correctamente instalada y con una
buena compensación son el propietario, el operador y/o el timonel.
Al acto de corregir la desviación se denomina COMPENSACIÓN.
Por lo general, las desviaciones se producen por la presencia de
elementos magnéticos (tales como altavoces, micrófonos, etc.) u
otros dispositivos que suele haber en los barcos. Las brújulas
magnéticas apuntan hacia el norte magnético. La diferencia que
existe entre el norte magnético y el norte real se denomina
VARIACIÓN. Esta variación muta de acuerdo con la ubicación
geográfica y puede determinarse consultando el cuadro local.
Las brújulas XP-95, XP-98 y XP-99 no están equipadas con
compensadores internos. Instale la brújula en un sitio donde el error
de lectura sea mínimo. Para compensar la brújula es necesario
contar con imanes externos.
Cómo seleccionar la mejor ubicación
Elija el sitio donde se produzcan menos desviaciones hacia los
cuatro puntos cardinales (N, S, E, O).
La brújula debe estar cerca del timonel, por debajo de su línea de
visión, para que pueda consultarla con comodidad durante su
operación normal.
Para instalar los modelos deberá buscar una superficie plana. Si la
superficie no cumple con los requisitos necesarios para la
instalación, podrá rectificarla utilizando un bloque de compensación.
Cómo verificar si la ubicación seleccionada es la correcta
Para verificar si la ubicación seleccionada es la correcta, utilice la
brújula. Sosténgala en un sitio alejado de interferencias y observe la
indicación de las agujas. Luego, coloque la brújula en la posición
correcta, con cuidado de mantenerla siempre apuntando hacia la
misma dirección. Si la indicación cambia, a pesar de no haber hecho
modificación en la dirección, significa que hay una desviación.
Instalación
Para instalar la brújula es necesario tomar mucha precaución y
alinearla con respecto a la quilla del barco. Cualquier error en el

Tome la plantilla de montaje suministrada, haga dos agujeros en el
lugar deseado y coloque las presillas. No las ajuste demasiado.
Deje los cabezales con la altura suficiente (aproximadamente ¼ de
pulgada) como para poder colocar la junta y el marco de la brújula.
Retire el aro móvil del marco. Quite el papel protector y péguelo a
la junta en la parte inferior de la brújula. Asegúrese de alinear las
ranuras de la juntas para las presillas con respecto a las ranuras de la
base. (Nota: La junta de espuma también puede aplicarse a la
cubierta o al sitio donde desee montarla. Tenga en cuenta que la
junta puede perderse o dañarse). Para instalar la brújula, sólo
coloque las ranuras de las presillas de la base sobre los cabezales de
las presillas. Presione la brújula hacia abajo y ajústela moviendo en

Nota importante:
•Asegúrese de que no hay cables u otros objetos en la zona en la
que va a taladrar.
•La rosca del tornillo de montaje debe recubrirse de sellador para
uso marino antes de la instalación.
•Si desea que la instalación sea permanente, monte los dos últimos
tornillos.
Funcionamiento del modelo XP-98
Cómo ver los cambios en el viento.
El cuadrante está dividido en cuatro secciones: dos azules y dos
blancas con marcas hasta 8 de 5 grados. Antes de iniciar la carrera,
despliegue la vela por babor y estribor. Anote la dirección central de
cada uno (por ejemplo, azul 4). Notará que al levantar la vela, la
indicación aumenta por babor y por estribor, baja.
El marco lo ayudará a orientarse en su curso. Indique el curso de la
marca de sotavento y cuando compense con la marca de barlovento,
sabrá exactamente hacía dónde dirigirse usando la parte superior de
la brújula. Cuando vaya en el sentido del viento, podrá utilizar la
brújula para ver los topes de las velas.
Recuerde:
Fije la cabecera a 5 grados y verá una gran mejora en su navegación.
El viento por delante es bueno.
Funcionamiento del modelo XP-99
El marco móvil está diseñado como recordatorio visual de la
dirección de destino. Gire el aro del marco hasta que la dirección
deseada esté alineada con la línea de fe. Para timonear hacia el
destino, gire el barco hasta que la brújula quede alineada con la línea
de fe.
Garantía

einwandfreie Einbau und die Kompensation
des Kompasses obliegt dem Besitzer bzw.
Bediener und/oder Rudergänger.
KOMPENSATION ist das Korrigieren der Deviation. Magneten
(Lautsprecher, Mikrofone usw.), Eisenmetalle (Stahl, Eisen u. a.)
und elektrische Geräte sind häufig Verursacher von Deviation.
Magnetkompasse zeigen immer den magnetischen Nordpol an. Der
magnetische Nordpol weicht vom geografischen Nordpol ab. Diese
Abweichung wird DEKLINATION (auch Ortsmissweisung)
genannt. Die Deklination ändert sich je nach geografischer Lage
und kann anhand einer Isogonenkarte bestimmt werden.
Die Kompasse XP-95, XP-98 & XP-99 sind nicht mit integrierten
Kompensatoren ausgestattet. Der Kompass sollte an einer Stelle
eingebaut werden, an der Ablesefehler weitgehend ausgeschlossen
sind. Falls das Kompensieren des Kompasses nötig ist, sind externe
Magneten erforderlich.
Auswahl eines geeigneten Einbauortes
Suchen Sie eine Stelle, an der die geringste Ablenkung an einer der
vier Haupthimmelsrichtungen (N, S, O und W) vorliegt.
Der Kompass sollte in der Nähe des Rudergängers unterhalb seiner
Sichtlinie angebracht werden, damit die Einstellung problemlos
abgelesen werden kann.
Der Kompass ist auf einer ebenen, waagerechten Oberfläche zu
befestigen. Wenn die Oberfläche nicht den Einbauanforderungen
entspricht, kann der Einsatz einer speziell angefertigten Verschalung
Abhilfe schaffen.
Überprüfen des gewählten Einbauortes
Sie können einen Einbauort mit dem Kompass überprüfen.
Beginnen Sie die Prüfung an einer Stelle an Bord, die möglichst weit
von magnetischen Störfeldern entfernt ist, und beobachten Sie die
Kompassnadel. Stellen Sie den Kompassring entsprechend ein,
während Sie den Kompass unverändert in dieselbe Richtung halten.
Wenn sich die Kompasseinstellung trotz unveränderter Richtung
ändert, liegt eine Ablenkung (Deviation) vor.
Einbau
Der Kompass muss so befestigt werden, dass er am Kiel des Bootes
(längsschiff) ausgerichtet ist. Ein Ausrichtungsfehler macht sich als
bleibender Fehler auf allen Kursen bemerkbar, da der Kompass nicht
genau in Fahrtrichtung des Bootes zeigt.
Bohren Sie zwei Führungslöcher anhand der mitgelieferten
Schablone in den gewünschten Einbauort und schrauben Sie die
Schrauben ein. Ziehen Sie sie jedoch noch nicht ganz fest. Lassen
Sie die Köpfe ausreichend überstehen (ca. 6mm), damit die Dichtung
und Kompassfassung noch aufgesetzt werden können. Als Nächstes
ziehen Sie den beweglichen Navigationsring ab. Ziehen Sie die
Schutzfolie von der Schaumstoffdichtung ab und bringen Sie die
klebrige Seite der Dichtung auf der Unterseite des Kompasses an.
Die Aussparungen in der Dichtung für die Schrauben müssen sich
mit den Aussparungen an der Unterseite des Kompasses decken.
(Hinweis: Die Schaumstoffdichtung kann auch an Deck angebracht
werden. Dabei kann sie sich allerdings lösen oder beschädigt
werden.) Zum Einbau des Kompasses setzen Sie die Montagelöcher
des Kompassbodens einfach auf die Köpfe der Schrauben auf. Zum
Einschrauben drücken Sie den Kompass nach unten und drehen ihn
gleichzeitig im Uhrzeigersinn. Der Kompass sollte fest anliegen,
damit er nicht verrutschen kann. Ziehen Sie die Schrauben ggf. fest
oder lösen Sie sie. Drücken Sie nun den Kompass nach unten und
drehen ihn gleichzeitig gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, um ihn
herauszuziehen. Setzen Sie nach dem Einbau des Kompasses den
beweglichen Navigationsring so ein, dass er einrastet.
Wichtige Hinweise:
•Vergewissern Sie sich vor dem Bohren der Öffnung, dass keine
Kabel oder Gegenstände im Weg sind.
•Die Schraubengewinde sollten kurz vor der Montage mit einer
seetauglichen Dichtmasse beschichtet werden.
•Falls Sie eine dauerhafte Montage wünschen, befestigen Sie
auch die letzten beiden Schrauben.

Winddrehungen (Auf- und Abtriebe)
Die Kompassrose ist in vier Bereiche aufgeteilt: zwei blaue und zwei
weiße, die jeweils in Abständen zu je 5 Grad von 0 bis 8 skaliert
sind. Segeln Sie vor der Regatta windwärts am Backbord- und am
Steuerbordbug. Schreiben Sie jeweils den mittleren Kurs (z. B. blau
4) auf jeden Bereich. Bei Auftrieb steigt der Wert am Backbordbug
an, während er am Steuerbordbug abfällt.
Der CourseMinder-Navigationsring dient als Orientierungshilfe auf
der Regattastrecke. Stellen Sie den Kurs auf der leeseitigen
Markierung ein. Wenn Sie die luvseitige Markierung umsegeln,
können Sie anhand des oberen Kompassbereiches genau bestimmen,
in welche Richtung Sie segeln müssen. Mit Hilfe des
Kompassbereichs können Sie auch leeseitige Auf- und Abtriebe
ermitteln.
Tipps:
Durch Aufkreuzen von Abtrieben in Abständen von 5 Grad werden
Sie signifikante Fortschritte in Regatten erzielen.
Das Segeln mit dem Wind ist vorteilhaft.
Bedienung des XP-99
Der bewegliche Navigationsring ist eine visuelle Orientierungshilfe,
die in Richtung des Zielpunkts zeigt. Drehen Sie den
Navigationsring, bis der gewünschte Kurs mit dem Steuerstrich
übereinstimmt. Zum Ansteuern des Ziels wenden Sie das Boot so
lange, bis derselbe Kurs auf der Kompassrose mit dem Steuerstrich
übereinstimmt.
Garantie

verarbeitet wurden und die verwendeten Werkstoffe makellos sind.
