The wire which
is coloured GREEN-AND-YELLOW must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked by the

Radio and Television Interference
The Rodgers 525/535 uses and generates small amounts of radio-frequency (RF) energy.
The instrument complies with the limits set for Class B digital devices. FCC Rules, Part
15,
Subpart B define the limits for radio and television interference in a residential instal-
lation.
Follow the installation and the use instructions in the manual, or the instrument could
potentially cause interference with some radio or television reception. In the unlikely
event this occurs, we encourage the user to try the following corrective measures:
./ Turn the instrument OFF to see ifit is the actual source of the
interference.
Disconnect the peripheral devices and their input/output cables one
at a time. If the interference stops, it is caused by the peripheral
device or its I/O cable.
Try
coiling and uncoiling the instrument's power cord in different
ways.
Connect the instrument's power cord to a power outlet on a
different circuit.
Move the instrument farther away from the radio or television
receiver.
Turn
the radio or television receiver until the interference stops.
Connect the radio or television receiver to a different power circuit.
Reorient or move the receiver antenna farther away from the
instrument. Consider installing a rooftop antenna with coaxial
cable lead-in between the antenna and receiver.

Thank you for choosing the Rodgers 525/535. These instruments are high quality classical organs in
both sound and construction, designed to provide years of reliable service.
These instruments are two-manual classical organs that incorporate an eclectic specification and
authentic pipe organ sounds. The 535 has
28 speaking stops, expression and crescendo pedals, kick
switch for MIDI sustain control, Tutti,
PLl, PL2 controls, atwo-channel (stereo) audio system and
many other features. The 525 has
25 speaking stops, expression pedal, kick switch for MIDI sustain
control, atwo-channel (stereo) audio system and many other features.
The console is constructed
of the finest woods and veneers, suitable in the most elegant surroundings.
It is unsurpassed in beauty and longevity.
The 525/535 utilize lighted tilt tab stop controls. Traditional couplers are included,
as well as an adju-
stable combination action (pistons) with 2memories.
These instruments are completely voiced and tuned for optimum tonal authenticity. ARodgers fac-
tory-trained technician can provide additional voicing and finishing
as required.
The 525 and 535 offer full MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) capability, allowing the orga-
nist to control other MIDI devices (keyboards, sequencers, rhythm units, sound modules, etc.). MIDI
allows the performer full recording and playback capabilities using an external MIDI device.

To get started, here is abrief tour of the basi<: operations of the Rodgers 525/535 organs:
TURN ON/TURN OFF
To turn the organ on, press the power rocker switch at the bottom. The power lamp will light,
indicating the
power is on and the organ is ready to play. To turn the power off, press the power
rocker switch
at the top. The organ is powered off.
DIVISIONS
The following groupings of stops (tilt tabs) affect the indicated manuals (keyboards)
or pedalboard:

Model- 525

SELECTING OR RETIRING ASTOP
Press the bottom of the desired tilt tab to tum it on. It will light, indicating it is on. Press the top of
the tilt tab to tum off the stop. The light will go off, indicating the stop is off.
CELESTE STOP
The "CELESTE" tab can be used to play either the "String Celeste" or "Flute Celeste". Holding
"SET" piston while pressing the bottom of the "CELESTE" tab, toggles between "Flute Celeste"
and "String
Celeste'. The appropriate MIDI messages are sent when either, "Flute Celeste" or "
String
Celeste" is selected.
COMBINATION ACTION(Pistons)
The 525 and 535, feature acombination action easily changed by the organist from the console.
The organist
can pre-select favorite registrations and make rapid changes in tone color using this
advanced
system. The pistons will light when pressed. The piston labeled "R" restores the last Free
Panel setting.
The USA Version of 525 and 535 feature Divisional "Combination Memories". This means that the
first four "Pistons" contains only "Great and Pedal" stop settings and the other three "Pistons"
contains
only "Swell" stop settings.
Model- 525
ea.. How To Set The Pistons:
1. Select amemory bank by pressing Ml or M2.
2. Select the stops desired.
3. Press the
SET piston and hold.
Model- 535
4. While holding the SET piston, press the desired combination piston, and then release both
pistons simultaneously.

Couplers enable stops of one Division to be played on
another
keyboard or pedalboard. The couplers on the 525 /535 models are
GREAT TO
PEDAL, SWELL TO PEDAL and SWELL TO GREAT.
TREMULANTS
Tremulants create changes in pitch (sharp and flat) or amplitude (volume). The use of tremulants
adds wannth
to solo or small ensemble combinations and is useful in gospel and romantic music.
The 525
/535 have aSWELL TREMULANT, GREAT TREMULANT and FLUTE FULL TRE-
MULANT
which are useful for classical music. Each TREMULANT is adjustable for both speed
and depth.
It is recommended that these adjustments be made by A Factory-Trained Technician.

EXPRESSION PEDAL
The pedal on the left controls the overall volume of the Swell Division or the total volume of the
instrument (see settings on Page 20, to switch change the Expression Pedal Mode). This pedal
is
used to give variety of expression to the music played. Pressing the pedal forward increases the
volume; drawing back decreases the volume.
KICK SWITCH FOR MIDI SUSTAIN
ASideKick switch is located to the left side of the EXPRESSION Pedal. When actvated, it sends
MIDI sustain (Hold) messages to the GREAT MIDI coupler channel.
CRESCENDO PEDAL (Only 535)
The pedal to the right of the Expression Pedal is the CRESCENDO Pedal, which gradually adds a
user pre-determined selection
of stops as it is pressed forward. The CRESCENDO Pedal does not
affect the stops already set up on the organ, but merely adds to them. Stops added by the CRE-
SCENDO Pedal do not light.
When the CRESCENDO Pedal is in use, the Crescendo indicators will light (from left to right)
as
the pedal is depressed and more stops are added. Achange in the setting of the crescendo differing
from the sequence set at the factory may be desired.
e&. How To Set The Crescendo:
1. While holding piston Rand piston 1, press the °(General Cancel) piston.
2.
Move the CRESCENDO Pedal; the stops contained in the CUlTent step number will light.
Set the desired stop configuration for the
CUlTent step number.
3. Press the SET button and the stop configuration is stored as the CUlTent step number.
4. Repeat steps
1-3 to set the remaining Crescendo step numbers.
TUTTI / Pl1 / Pl2 (Only 535)
There are times when different full organ registrations are needed immediately. The 535 model is
equipped with aTutti, PL1 and PL2 toe pistons. Press the toe piston to tum on the Tutti, PL1 or
PL2, and press again
to tum it off.
When "TUTTI" is "ON", the TUTTI indicator lights.
When
"PL1" is "ON", the TUTTI indicator blinks at low frequency
When "PL2
is "ON", the TUTTI indicator blinks at ahigher rate
When
"PL1" and "PL2" are both "ON" the TUTTI indicator blinks very fast.
When these preset combinations are activated, the selected tilt tabs do not light. These "Factory"
combinations can be user adjusted.

ca. How To Set The Tutti / PL 1 / PL2 Toe Piston Combinations:
1. Press and hold down the Rand 1piston.
2. While holding these pistons, press the 0(General Cancel) piston.
3. Press the Tutti,
PLI or PL2 piston; the current relative stop configuration lights.
4. Set the
new desired stop configuration.
5. While
holding the SET piston, press the Tutti, PLI or PL2 piston, and then release both
pistons simultaneously.
TUNING CONTROL
The 525 and 535 organs are equipped with aTUNING control. This allows the entire organ to be
tuned easily and quickly to apiano or musical instmment not at standard concert pitch (A=440).
If
the TUNING control is pushed in, the organ will remain at standard concert pitch, and turning the
control will have
no effect. To alter the pitch, press the TUNING control until it moves outward and
clicks, then tum
the control to set the pitch.
TRANSPOSER CONTROL
Turning the TRANSPOSER control will raise or lower the pitch ofthe organ up to four semitones
(half steps) flat,
and up to three semitones sharp. Many singers need akey change to accommodate
their voice range.
The TRANSPOSER is especially useful for accompanying soloists, eliminating
the need to mentally transpose printed music into amore suitable
key. The TRANSPOSER helps
the organist accomplish this effortlessly.
MASTER VOLUME CONTROL
This knob controls the overall volume of the entire instmment. Set it near its midpoint to obtain the
best performance.
REVERB LEVEL
This control adjusts the total amount of digital reverberation affecting the organ voices.

THE AUTOMATIC PEDAL
(Only EUROPEAN Version)
The 525/535 European models are equipped with auseful function called "Automatic Pedal". This
function allows you to automatically adjust the sound volume
of the "Pedal" section depending on
which manual you are playing. When the "Great to Pedal" coupler in ON, it is automatically set On
and
Off depending on the manual that is actually in use. For example if you are playing ONLY on
the Swell manual and the
PA function is on, then the coupler effect is disabled (the light remains
on). Playing the Great manual or both, then the coupler effect
is enabled.
ea.. How To Set The Automatic Pedal Function:
1. Press and release the PA piston to set On and Off the Automatic Pedal function.
2. The relative lamp will light indicating the status of the PA function.
CHIMES
(Only USA Version)
When the "CHIMES" piston is pressed (its indicator lamp lights), apolyphonic CHIMES sound is
played on the GREAT manual. The state of the CHIMES piston is stored behind the registration
pistons. The appropriate MIDI Stop MAP message is transmitted when chimes is selected.
TEMPERAMENTS
Although most instruments today "are tuned in Equal Temperament system, there has recently been
arenewed interest in historic temperaments and their effect on the music written for organ
employing these temperaments: Equal, Kimberger, Werkmeister
I, Werkmeister III, Mean-Tone,
Pythagorean, Young Iand Young II.
Note: Temperaments other than Equal should be used with care since most other temperaments are
appropriate only for alimited range
of music.
To chose atemperament hold "0" and press one of the piston memory buttons from R to 7 to recall
the appropriate temperament.
R= Equal
1= Mean-Tone
2= Pythagorean
3= Kimberger
4= Werkmeister I
5= Werkmeister III
6= Young 1
7= Young 2

This feature's name is derived from the ancient term "Basso Continuo," meaning thoroughbass.
When this piston is pressed, the indicatror will light. Any stops or couplers on in the Pedal Division
will sound from
the lowest key being played on the Great manual. This provides apedal bass
without having to actually play the pedalboard with the feet.
In its normal setting, the BASS coupler affects keys 1through
24 of the Great manual, but its
range is programmable.
ea, How To Set The Range Of The Bass Coupler:
1Hold SET and press the BASS coupler, whose indicator will start flashing.
2Release
the SET piston and the BASS coupler.
3While the BASS piston indicator is flashing, press akey which conesponds to the highestnote
the range is to extend. Any note from key 1to key 32 may
be selected. After the selected key
has been pressed, the BASS piston indicator will stop flashing
Note:
When akey is pressed to set the range, no sound will be heard even if stops are on, so
no disturbance will be made
if programming during aperformance. This setting is not saved
into combination memory.

When the MELODY coupler is pressed, its indicator will light. Any stop or coupler of the Swell
Division will sound from the highest key being played on the Great manual. This allows asolo
melody and an accompaniment to be played from the same manual.
In its normal setting, the MELODY coupler affects keys
25 through 61 on the Great manual, but
its range is programmable.
ea.. How To Set The Range Of The Melody Coupler:
1. Hold SET and press the MELODY coupler, whose indicator starts flashing.
2. Release the SET piston and MELODY coupler.
3. While the MELODY coupler indicator is flashing, press akey which corresponds to the
lowest note
of the desired range. Any note from key 1to key 61 may be selected. After the
selected key has been pressed, the MELODY coupler indicator will stop flashing.
Note: This setting is not saved into combination memory.

The Rodgers USER I/O PANEL allows the organist to conveniently make audio input/output,
MIDI In, Out and Thru connections. This panel is located on the rear panel
of the instrument. The
following descriptions detail the controls and their functions:
MIDIIN/OUT/THRU
These are the jacks used to connect the Rodgers organ to an external sequencer, voice module,
computer or other external MIDI device or instrument.
AUXILIARY INPUTS (Left and Right)
These are AUXILIARY AUDIO INPUTS allowing the organist to connect the audio outputs of a
MIDI voice module, cassette player, compact disc player
or other stereo audio device to the organ.
This allows the sound
of the audio device to be heard through the organ speakers.
AUXILIARY OUTPUTS (Left and Right)
These AUXILIARY AUDIO OUTPUTS may be connected to the audio inputs of an external
audio mixer, amplifier, cassette recorder,
DAT recorder or other external audio device of this type.

HEADPHONE JACK
The 525/535 have aHEADPHONE JACK located under the keyboard on the left side. When a
set
of headphones is plugged into the jack, the speaker system shuts off, allowing the organist pri-
vacy when playing. It
is recommended that you use stereo headphones with an impedance of not
less than 8ohms (Q).

The Rodgers 525/535 models feature velocity-sensing keyboards, and possess some of the most
advanced MIDI capabilities in the world. MIDI voices are activated via three MIDI coupler tilt
tabs. The MIDI channels these coupler tilt tabs control are:
Great Channel 1*MIDI ON GREAT
Swell Channel 2MIDI ON SWELL
Pedal Channel 3MIDI ON PEDAL
*May be changed to any of the sixteen MIDI channels.
To change this channel, see "Channel Reassignment."
SENDING APROGRAM CHANGE
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of aMIDI coupler tilt tab. The tilt tab will flash,
indicating the MIDI Set Mode
is active. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2. Choose the desired Program Change (sound), and press the corresponding key (see the
Program Change Chart).

Once aProgram Change has been sent on aMIDI coupler, that same Program Change will be
sent each time the tilt tab is activated. The Program Change will also be saved on any combination
piston including that MIDI coupler.
VELOCITY INFORMATION
As adefault, the Great and Swell MIDI channels send detected velocity messages. The harder a
key is played, the louder the MIDI sound will be. The Pedal always sends afixed velocity.
It is possible to have the Great or Swell MIDI coupler send afixed velocity message. To change
the Great or Swell MIDI coupler from detected velocity to fixed velocity:
1. Hold SET and press the MIDI coupler to be changed. The coupler will flash. Release
SET and the MIDI coupler.
2. Move the Expression Pedal to the minimum volume position. The coupler will stop flashing.

3. To change the coupler back to detected velocity, repeat step 1, then move the Expression
Pedal to the maximum volume position.
Note: The velocity status
of the Great and Swell MIDI couplers will be stored in the
combination action
of the organ.
It is also possible to have the Great and Swell MIDI coupler send avelocity message that
depends upon the Expression Pedal position.
To change the Great and Swell MIDI coupler
from detected velocity to Expression Pedal velocity:
1. Hold SET and press both Swell and Great MIDI couplers. Both couplers will flash.
Release SET and the MIDI couplers.
2. Move the Expression Pedal to the maximum volume position. The couplers will stop
flashing.
3. To change the couplers back to detected velocity or fixed velocity, repeat step 1and move
the Expression Pedal to the minimum volume position.

When the MIDI couplers are set to fixed velocity, it's possible to program the value of the fixed
velocity sent:
1. While holding piston Rand piston 1, press 0(General Cancel).
2. Press the M2 piston.
3. Press piston 5, it will flash. Use the same numbering method shown in the Program Change
Chart on page
11. Press akey on the Great/Swell/Pedal. This key represents the velocity
value that will be sent on the MIDI couplers.
4. Press the 0(General Cancel) piston to return to normal operations.

CHANNEL REASSIGNMENT
All MIDI couplers transmit on fixed channels except MIDI ON GREAT. To set the transmit
channel for this coupler:
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of MIDI ON GT. It will flash. Release SET and MIDI
ONGT.
2. Hold piston 1, and press any key on the Great manual between low Cand tenor D# to
signify the desired MIDI channel. Low C is Channell, low C# is Channel 2, etc. The
MIDI ON GT coupler will stop flashing.
Note: The new Great MIDI Channel assignment will be stored in the combination action
of
the organ.
OCTAVE TRANSPOSE
Normally, all MIDI couplers play at standard pitch (middle C=MIDI note 60). The Octave
Transpose parameter may be reset to cause any MIDI coupler to play one octave above or below
standard pitch.
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of the desired MIDI coupler. It will flash. Release SET
and the MIDI coupler.
2. To transpose up one octave, turn the TRANSPOSER control to +1, +2, +3 or +4.
3. To transpose down one octave, turn the TRANSPOSER control to -1, -2, -3 or -4.
4. Exit this mode by pressing 0(General Cancel).
5. Return the TRANSPOSER to the desired setting.
Note: The Octave Transpose status
of each MIDI coupler will be stored in the combination
action of the organ.
To return aMIDI coupler to standard pitch repeat steps 1-5 and return the TRANSPOSER from
+1to 0if returning from one octave sharp. Return the TRANSPOSER from -1 to 0if returning
from one octave flat.

ENABLING/DISABLING MIDI MASTER CHANNELS
The following MIDI channels are used to control the organ through MIDI:
Great Master Channel 12
Swell Master Channel

Pedal Master Channel 14
It is possible to stop the transmission or reception of MIDI information on these Master
Channels.
To disable reception of information on aMIDI Master Channel:
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of the MIDI coupler corresponding to the channel to be
disabled. It will flash. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2. While the coupler is flashing, press the top of the MIDI coupler (as if turning off). It will
stop flashing.
To enable reception of information on aMIDI Master Channel:
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of the MIDI coupler corresponding to the channel to be
enabled. It will flash. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2. While the coupler is flashing, press the bottom of the MIDI coupler (as if turning on). It
will stop flashing.
When transmission on all MIDI Master Channels is inhibited, then no stop change (MIDI System
Exclusive stop change)
is transmitted.
To disable transmission of information on aMIDI Master Channel:
1. Hold SET and press the MIDI coupler corresponding to the MIDI Master Channel to
disable. It will flash. Release the MIDI coupler.
2. While the coupler is flashing, hold SET and press the top of the MIDI coupler (as if
turning off). It will stop flashing.
To enable transmission of infOlmation on aMIDI Master Channel:
1. Hold SET and press the bottom of the MIDI coupler corresponding to the MIDI Master
Channel to enable.
It will flash. Release the MIDI coupler.
2. While the coupler is flashing, hold SET and press the bottom of the MIDI coupler (as if
turning on). It will stop flashing.
Note: The send and receive status

GS Format Sound Selection Instructions
The leading-edge MIDI capabilities of the 525 /535 organ from Rodgers include afunction
known
as GS Format Sound Selection. GS Format Sound Selection greatly increases the control
that Rodgers owners have with MIDI (or Musical Instrument Digital Interface).
To this point, MIDI has used 128 different
Program Change messages to select sounds. Page 10
of this Owner's Manual contains instructions on using Program Change messages to select sounds
in aseparate MIDI sound module.
However, some sound modules have more than
128 sounds. The GS Format Sound Selection
was developed to allow MIDI users access to more sounds.
Rodgers is the first manufacturer in the organ market
to introduce this powerful capability. By
following these steps, you will be able
to put this exciting feature to work.
How does GS Format Work?
In the past, MIDI has used 128 Program Change messages to select sounds. Each of these pro-
gram changes is still used in the GS Format; however,
128 Variation Select messages and 128
Variation Page messages are now used to select variations of each sound.
For instance, study the graph below:

Program Changes
Sending aProgram Change message by itself will select asound in the lowest variation of voi-
ces, shown above with no shading. This variation
of voices is often called "Variation 0". For instan-
ce, sending Program Change
#1 would select "Piano 1"; sending Program Change #4 would select
"Honky".

As you can see, there are variations of each sound located in the variations above Variation 0and
there are
128 pages of extra variation. By combining the Variation Select messages, actually called
a"Controller
0" and "Controller 32" messages (used to select the various pages) with aProgram
Change message,
the sounds in the variations above Variation 0and the various pages can be selec-
ted. For example, sending Variation Select
#1 Page #8 and Program Change #5 would select
"Electric".
To send aVariation Select and Program Change message from aMIDI coupler:
1. Hold SET.
2. Press and hold the MIDI coupler (coupler will flash as it is held).
3. Hold SET and press the key which corresponds to the variation desired (CC-OO):
