OVERVIEW OF THE 527
Thank you for choosing the Rodgers 527 organ. These instruments are high quality classical organs
in both sound and construction, designed
to
provide years
of
reliable service.
This instrument is a two-manual classical organ that incorporate an eclectic specification and authen-
tic pipe organ sounds. The 527 has
25
speaking stops, an expression pedal, a kick switch for MIDI
sustain control, a two-channel (stereo) audio system, and many other features.
The console
is
made
of
the finest woods and veneers, suitable in the most elegant surroundings.lt is
unsurpassed
in
beauty and longevity.
The 527 utilizes lit tilt tab stop controls. Traditional couplers are included
as
well
as
an adjustable
Combination action (pistons) with 2 memories.
This instrument is completely voiced and tuned for optimum tonal authenticity. A factory-trained
Rodgers technician can provide additional voicing and finishing
as
required.
The 527 offers full MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) capability, allowing you to control
other MIDI devices (keyboards, sequencers, rhythm units, sound modules, etc.). MIDI provides full
recording and playback capabilities via external MIDI devices (a sequencer, a computer, etc.).

BRIEF
TOUR
To
get started, here is a brief tour
of
the basic operations
of
the Rodgers 527 organ:
TURNING THE INSTRUMENT ON
AND
OFF
To
tum the organ on, press the lower half
of
the power rocker switch. The power lamp will light,
indicating that the power is on and that the organ is ready to play. To tum the power off, press the
upper half of power rocker switch. The organ is powered off.
SECTIONS

stops (tilt tabs) affect the indicated manuals (keyboards) or pedalboard:

SELECTING OR RELEASING A STOP
Press the bottom
of
the desired tilt tab
to
tum it on. It will light, indicating it is on. Press the top
of
the tilt tab
to
tum off the stop. The light will go off, indicating the stop is off.
CELESTE STOP
The "CELESTE" tab can be used
to
play either the "String Celeste" or "Flute Celeste". Holding
the "SET" piston while pressing the bottom
of
the "CELESTE" tab, toggles between "Flute
Celeste" and "String Celeste". The corresponding MIDI messages are sent when either "Flute
Celeste" or " String Celeste" is selected.
COMBINATION
ACTION
(Pistons)
The 527 features a Combination action you can easily change from the console.
You
can pre-select
favorite registrations and make rapid changes in tone color using this advanced system. The pistons
will light when pressed. The piston labeled "R" restores the last Free Panel setting.
The
USA
version
of
the 527features Divisional "Combination Memories". This means that
the
firstfour "Pistons" contain only "Great and Pedal" stop settings, while the remaining three
"Pistons" contain only "Swell" stop settings.

• How
To
Set
The
Pistons:
1.
Select a memory bank by pressing M1 or M2.
2. Select the desired stops.
3. Press the SET piston and hold it.
4. While holding the SET piston, press the desired Combination piston
(1~7),
and then release both
pistons simultaneously.

!COUPLERS
Couplers enable stops
of
one Division to be played from another keyboard or pedalboard. The cou-
plers on the 527 are GREAT TO PEDAL, SWELLTO PEDAL and SWELLTO GREAT.

TREMULANTS

Tremulants create cyclic changes in pitch (sharp and flat) or amplitude (volume). The use
of
Tremulants adds warmth to solo or small ensemble Combinations,
so
typical
of
gospel and roman-
tic music. The 527 has a SWELL TREMULANT, GREAT TREMULANT and FLUTE FULL
TREMULANT which are useful for classical music. Each Tremulant
is
adjustable for both speed
and depth. It is recommended that these adjustments be made by a factory-trained technician.

EXPRESSION PEDAL
The pedal on the left controls the overall volume
of
the Swell section or the total volume
of
the
instrument (selectable via the settings on page 20). This pedal allows you to play with just as much
expression
as
benefits the music you are playing. Pressing the pedal forward increases the volume;
rpulling it back decreases the volume.
KICK SWITCH FOR
MIDI
SUSTAIN
A SideKick switch is located to the left side
of
the EXPRESSION Pedal. When activated, it sends
MIDI sustain (Hold) messages on the GREAT MIDI coupler channel.

TUNING
CONTROL
The 527 is equipped with a TUNING control. This allows the entire organ to be tuned easily and
quickly to a piano or musical instrument that doesn't use standard concert pitch (A=440).
If
the
TUNING control is pushed in, the organ will remain at standard concert pitch, and turning the con-
trol will have no effect.
To
alter the pitch, press the TUNING control until it moves outward and
clicks, then tum the control to set the pitch.
TRANSPOSER CONTROL
Turning the TRANSPOSER control will raise or lower the pitch
of
the organ up to four semitones
(half steps) down, and up to three semitones up. This may be useful for singers who need a key
change to accommodate their voice range. The TRANSPOSER is especially useful for accompany-
ing soloists, eliminating the need to mentally transpose printed music into a more suitable key. The
TRANSPOSER helps the organist accomplish this effortlessly.
MASTER VOLUME
CONTROL
This knob controls the overall volume
of
the entire instrument. Set it near its center position to
obtain the best performance.
REVERB LEVEL
This control adjusts the total amount
of
digital reverberation affecting the organ voices.

THE AUTOMATIC PEDAL
(Only
EUROPEAN
Version)
The European 527 model is equipped with a useful function called "Automatic Pedal". This func-
tion allows you to automatically adjust the sound volume
of
the "Pedal" section depending on
which manual you are playing. When the "Great to Pedal" coupler in ON, it is automatically
switched on and off depending on the manual that is currently in use. For example
if
you are play-
ing ONLY on the Swell manual and the
PA
function is on, then the coupler effect is disabled (the
light remains on).
If
you play on the Great manual, or both, the coupler effect is enabled.
•
How
To
Set The Automatic Pedal Function:
1.
Press and release the PA piston to activate or switch off the Automatic Pedal function.
2. The corresponding lamp will light indicating the status
of
the PA function.
CHIMES
(Only
USA
Version
)
When the "CIITMES" piston
is
pressed (its indicator lamp lights), a polyphonic CHIMES sound
is
assigned to the GREAT manual. The state
of
the CHIMES piston is stored behind the registration
pistons. The appropriate MIDI Stop MAP message is transmitted when Chimes is selected.
TEMPERAMENTS
Although most instruments today are tuned according to the Equal Temperament system, there has
recently been a renewed interest in historic temperaments and their effect on the music written for
organ employing these temperaments: Equal, Kirnberger, Werckrneister I, Werckrneister
ill,
Mean-
Tone, Pythagorean, Young I and Young II.
Note: Temperaments other than Equal should be used with care since most historic temperaments
are appropriate onlyfor a limited range
of
music.
To
choose a temperament hold

THE
BASS
COUPLER
This feature's name is derived from the ancient term "Basso Continuo," meaning thoroughbass.
When this piston is pressed, the indicatror will light. Any stops or couplers on in the Pedal Division
will sound from the lowest key being played on the Great manual. This provides a pedal bass with-
out you having
to
play the on the pedalboard.
In its normal setting, the BASS coupler affects keys 1 through 24
of
the Great manual, but its range
is programmable.
•
How
To
Set
The
Range
Of
The
Bass
Coupler:
1 Hold SET and press the BASS coupler. Its indicator will start flashing.
2 Release the SET piston and the BASS coupler.
3 While the BASS piston indicator is flashing, press a key which corresponds
to
the highest note
of
the desired range. Any note from key 1 to key 32 may be selected.

pressed, the BASS piston indicator will stop flashing
Note: When a key is pressed to set the range, no sound will be heard even ifstops are on. That
means you could even change the range during a performance. This setting is not saved into combi-
nation memory.

THE
MELODY
COUPLER
When the MELODY coupler is pressed, its indicator will light. Any stop or coupler
of
the Swell
Division will sound the highest key being played on the Great manual. This allows a solo melody
and an accompaniment to be played from the same manual.
In its normal setting, the MELODY coupler affects keys

through
61
on the Great manual, but its
range is programmable.

How
to set the range of the Melody Coupler:
1.
Hold SET and press the MELODY coupler. Its indicator starts flashing.
2. Release the SET piston and MELODY coupler.
3. While the MELODY coupler indicator is flashing, press a key which corresponds
to
the lowest
note
of
the desired range. Any note from key 1 to key
61
may be selected.
Mter

PANEL
The Rodgers USER

PANEL allows the organist to conveniently make audio input/output, MIDI
In, Out and Thru connections. This panel is located on the rear panel
of
the instrument. The follow-
ing descriptions detail the jacks and their functions:
MIDI
INIOUT/THRU
These jacks are used
to
connect the Rodgers organ to an external sequencer, sound module, com-
puter, or other external MIDI device or instrument.
STEREO
IN
jacks (Left and Right)
These are auxiliary audio inputs allowing the organist to connect the audio outputs
of
a MIDI voice
module, cassette player, compact disc player or other stereo audio device to the organ. This allows
the sound
of
the audio device to be heard through the organ speakers.
STEREO
OUT
jacks (Left and Right)
These AUXILIARY AUDIO OUTPUTS may be connected to the audio inputs
of
an external audio
mixer, amplifier, cassette recorder, DAT recorder or other external audio device
of
this type.

JACK
The 527 has a HEADPHONE JACK located under the keyboard on the left side. When a set
of
headphones is plugged into this jack, the speaker system shuts off,
so
that you can play without dis-
turbing your family our neighbors.
It
is recommended that you use stereo headphones with an
impedance
of
at least 8 ohms (Q).

MIDI
(MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DIGITAL INTERFACE)
The Rodgers 527 features velocity-sensitive keyboards, and possess some
of
the most advanced
MIDI capabilities in the world. MIDI voices are activated via three MIDI coupler tilt tabs. The
MIDI channels these coupler tilt tabs control are:
Great Channel 1* MIDI ON GREAT
Swell Channel 2 MIDI ON SWELL
Pedal Channel 3 MIDI ON PEDAL
*May
be changed
to
any
of
the sixteen MIDI channels.
To
change this channel, see "Channel Reassignment."
SENDING A PROGRAM CHANGE
1. Hold SET and press the bottom
of
a MIDI coupler tilt tab. The tilt tab will flash, indicating the
MIDI Set Mode is active. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2. Choose the desired Program Change (sound), and press the corresponding key (see the Program
Change Chart).

Once a Program Change has been sent on a MIDI coupler, that same Program Change will be sent
each time the tilt tab is activated. The Program Change will also be saved on any combination pis-
ton including that MIDI coupler.
VELOCITY INFORMATION
By default, the Great and Swell MIDI channels send velocity messages. The harder a key is played,
the louder the MIDI sound will be. The Pedal always sends a fixed velocity value.
It
is possible to have the Great or Swell MIDI coupler send a fixed velocity message.
To
change the
Great or Swell MIDI coupler from detected velocity
to
fixed velocity:
1.
Hold SET and press the MIDI coupler
to
be changed. The coupler will flash. Release SET and the
MIDI coupler.
2. Move the Expression Pedal to the minimum volume position. The coupler will stop flashing.

3.
To
change the coupler back
to
detected velocity, repeat step 1, then move the Expression Pedal
to
the maximum volume position. ·
Note: The velocity status
of
the Great and Swell MIDI couplers will be stored next time you write
your settings
to
a Combination memory.
It is also possible to have the Great and Swell MIDI couplers send a velocity message that depends
upon the expression pedal's position.
To
change the Great and Swell MIDI couplers from actual
velocity
to
Expression Pedal velocity:
1.
Hold SET and press both the Swell and Great MIDI couplers. Both couplers will flash. Release
SET and the MIDI couplers.
2. Move the Expression Pedal to the maximum volume position. The couplers will stop flashing.
3.
To
change the couplers back
to
detected velocity or fixed velocity, repeat step 1 and move the
Expression Pedal
to
the minimum volume position.

When the MIDI couplers are set
to
fixed velocity (see above), it is possible
to
program the velocity
value
to
be transmitted:
1.
While holding pistons R and 1, press 0 (General Cancel).
2. Press the M2 piston.
3. Press piston

it will flash. Use the same numbering method shown in the Program Change Chart
on page
11.
Press a key on the Great/Swell/Pedal. This key represents the velocity value that will
be sent on the MIDI couplers.
4. Press the 0 (General Cancel) piston
to
return to normal operations.

CHANNEL
REASSIGNMENT
All MIDI couplers transmit on fixed channels except MIDI ON GREAT.
To
set the transmit
channel for this coupler:
1.
Hold SET and press the bottom
of
MIDI ON
GT.
It will flash. Release SET and MIDI
ON
GT.
2. Hold piston 1, and press any key on the Great manual between low C and tenor D# to signify the
desired MIDI channel. Low C is Channel 1, low
C#
is Channel 2, etc. The MIDI ON GT coupler
will stop flashing.
Note: The new Great MIDI Channel assignment will be stored in the combination action
of
the
organ.
OCTAVE TRANSPOSE
Normally, all MIDI couplers play at standard pitch (middle C
=MIDI
note 60). The Octave
Transpose parameter may be reset to cause any MIDI coupler to play one octave above or below
standard pitch.
1.
Hold SET and press the bottom
of
the desired MIDI coupler. It will flash. Release SET
and the MIDI coupler.
2.
To
transpose up one octave, tum the TRANSPOSER control to +1, +2,
+3
or +4.
3.
To
transpose down one octave, tum the TRANSPOSER control to -1,
-2,-3
or -4.
4. Exit this mode by pressing 0 (General Cancel).
5. Return the TRANSPOSER to the desired setting.
Note: The Octave Transpose status
of
each MIDI coupler will be stored in the combination action
ofthe
organ.
To
return a MIDI coupler to standard pitch repeat steps
1-5
and return the TRANSPOSER con-
trol to 0.

ENABLING/DISABLING

It
is possible to stop the transmission or reception
of
MIDI information on these Master
Channels.
To
disable reception
of
information on a MIDI Master Channel:
1.
Hold SET and press the bottom
of
the MIDI coupler corresponding to the channel
to
be
disabled.
It
will flash. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2.
While the coupler is flashing, press the top
of
the MIDI coupler (as
if
turning it
off).lt
will
stop flashing.
To
enable reception
of
information on a MIDI Master Channel:
1.
Hold SET and press the bottom
of
the MIDI coupler corresponding to the channel
to
be
enabled.
It
will flash. Release SET and the MIDI coupler.
2.
While the coupler is flashing, press the bottom
of
the MIDI coupler (as
if
turning it on).
It
will stop flashing.
When transmission on all MIDI Master Channels is inhibited,
no
stop change (MIDI System
Exclusive stop change) messages are transmitted.
To
disable transmission
of
information on a MIDI Master Channel:
1.
Hold SET and press the MIDI coupler corresponding
to
the MIDI Master Channel
to
disable.
It
will flash. Release the MIDI coupler.
2. While the coupler is flashing, hold SET and press the top
of
the MIDI coupler (as
if
turning off).
It
will stop flashing.
To
enable transmission
of
information on a MIDI Master Channel:
1.
Hold SET and press the bottom
of
the MIDI coupler corresponding
to
the MIDI Master
Channel
to
enable.
It
will flash. Release the MIDI coupler.
2.
While the coupler is flashing, hold SET and press the bottom of the MIDI coupler (as if
turning it on).
It
will stop flashing.
Note: The send and receive status
of
the MIDI Master Channels are not saved
in
the
Combination actions
of
the 527.

GS
FORMAT
SOUND
SELECTION INSTRUCTIONS
The leading-edge MIDI capabilities
of
the 527 organ from Rodgers include a function known as
GS
Format
Sound Selection.
GS
Format Sound Selection greatly increases the control that
Rodgers owners have with MIDI (or Musical Instrument Digital Interface).
Up
to
this point, MIDI only used
128
Program
Change messages
to
select sounds. Page
10
of
this Owner's Manual contains instructions for how
to
select other sounds on
an
external MIDI mod-
ule using program change messages.
However, some sound modules have more than 128 sounds. The GS Format Sound Selection
system was developed
to
allow MIDI users access
to
any additional sounds a module or instrument
may have.
Rodgers is the first manufacturer in the organ market
to
implement this powerful capability. By
following these steps, you will be able to put this exciting feature
to
work.
How
does
GS
Format Work?
Program changes are still used in the
GS
Format. In addition, however,

Program Changes
Sending a Program Change message by itself will select a sound in the lowest variation
of
voices, shown above with no shading. This voice level is often called "Variation 0". For instance,
sending Program Change
#1
would select "Piano 1"; sending Program Change #4 would select
"Honky".

As you see, there may be variations for each sound located above Variation level
0,
and there are
128 pages containing additional variations. By adding Variation Select messages (their actual name
is Control Change
CCO
and Control Change CC32),
to
a Program Change message, the sounds
above Variation 0 and on other Variation Pages can be selected. For example, sending Variation
Select #1, Page #8, and Program Change #5 would select "Electric".
To
send a Variation Select and Program Change messages from a MIDI coupler:
1.
Hold SET.
2. Press and hold the MIDI coupler (coupler will flash
as
it is held).
3. Hold SET and press the key that is assigned
to
the desired variation (CC-00):

Selecting a PG key higher than

SAVING THE CONTENTS
OF
THE COMBINATION MEMORIES
The contents
of
all Combination settings may be transmitted to (and thus recorded
by)
a MIDI
sequencer and later transmitted
to
the organ again.
To
save the entire memory contents:
1.
The Master Clock on the sequencer must be on.
2. Start the sequencer, and wait for it
to
begin recording.
3. While holding SET, press
M1
or M2
to
begin the transmission
of
all memory information.
4. Stop the sequencer after all piston settings have been saved (about 5 seconds).
To
restore the settings from the sequencer:
1.
Start sequencer playback. After a few seconds the memory will be restored.

RECEIVING/TRANSMITTING PROGRAM CHANGES
The 527 can be set to transmit and receive Program Change and/or SysEx messages for piston
changes.
Registrations may be selected on the organ by sending a Program Change from another MIDI
device when the parameter PG/SysEx is set to PG or to PG+SysEx. The following is a list
of
Program Changes the 527 will respond to on any Master Channel (12, 13, 14):

While holding piston
Rand
piston 1, press the 0 (General Cancel) piston. Some piston lamps on
the front panel will light.
2. The Memory piston lamps 3 and 4 show the setting for the transmission
of
piston change messages.
If
lamp number 3 is on, Program Changes are sent when combination or memory pistons are
depressed.
If
lamp number 4 is on, SysEx messages are sent whenever stops are changed.
If
both lamps are on, Program Changes and SysEx are sent when pistons are activated.
Only SysEx is sent when stops are changed by hand.
3. Press and release piston 3 to set on and offPG transmission at piston change.
Press and release piston 4 to set on and off SysEx transmission at piston change.
Press and release piston 1 to assign CC number 07 to the expression pedal.
Press and release piston 2 to assign CC number

to the expression pedal.
The corresponding piston lamp will go on and off to indicate the status.
4. Press the 0 (General Cancel) piston to return to normal operation.
