2 Description
2.1 General description
The automatic backflush filter F450 is a versatile applicable, self-cleaning, as far
as possible maintenance-free filter to remove individual contamination of high
loaded liquids (200 mg/l) from natural sources of water (e.g. seawater, river wa-
ter), warming and/or cooling circuits and processes. The filter works already at an
operating pressure of only 8.7 psi (0.6 kg/cm2g) and features by a small pressure
loss at high flow rate, simple, durable design, high efficiency, weight and space-
saving design.
2.2 Technical description
The contaminated medium flows by the flange marked as inlet into the filter. It
moves through the filter insert from the inside to outside and steps cleaned out
from the flange marked as outlet. The flushing phase of the filter is activated ei-
ther by reaching at the differential adjusted on the pressure differential pressure
switch or after a pre-set interval of time. The flushing valve opens and a greater
amounts of soiling flushes out with the continuously flowing medium. Afterwards
the piston makes two strokes with the flushing disc in the filter insert, thus pro-
ducing an increase in speed between the flushing disc and the filter wall. The lo-
cal loss of pressure produced a ”suction effect” in the filter element. By means of
this pressure drop the coarser and easily cleanable particles are flushed out of
the insert liner through the opened flushing valve out of the filter.
The automatic backflush filter F450 is equipped with an electronic control system,
which monitors all functions and enables adjustment of operating parameters. It
starts automatically the flushing procedure, before possible consolidated deposit
the filter insert can lead to substantial flow reductions.
The flow of filtrate is not interrupted thereby. According to the operating condi-
tions the flushing time can be set over the control system. The flushing frequency
depends on the contamination of the medium.

Automatic Backflush Filter F450
State: 05.02.2016 –1.3 Georg Schünemann GmbH, Bremen 2-2
2.2.1 Description of the operational functions
The operation of the automatic backflush filter F450 is divided into the normal
operation and the flushing phases:
Normal operation
The filter is in the normal filtration phase. The
flushing valve is closed and the piston
mounted in the cover is in its initial position
with the flushing disc outside of the filter bas-
ket. The particles are deposited in the filter
insert in accordance with the laws of fluid me-
chanics, starting at the top and continuing
towards the bottom. The running time of this
filtration phase is dependent upon the level of
contamination of the medium.
Because of the design and the fluidic condi-
tions no particles are deposited in the bottom
area of the strainer in this phase.
Filtration and first flushing phase
In this flushing phase the flushing valve
opens and generates a pressure drop relative
to the system pressure prevailing in the pipe
work system. By means of this pressure drop
the coarser and easily cleanable particles are
flushed out of the strainer insert. The filtration
continues throughout this process, while the
flushing flow rate is defined and limited by an
orifice that is located in the flushing outlet
pipe.
The flushing process is triggered either by
monitoring of the differential pressure, or by a
time-based control algorithm resp. it will be
activated by external or by interface.

Automatic Backflush Filter F450
State: 05.02.2016 –1.3 Georg Schünemann GmbH, Bremen 2-3
Filtration and second flushing phase
The flushing valve is open. The pneumatic
driven piston, together with the flushing disc,
moves into the strainer insert up to a 2/3
depth. The large local increase in velocity in
the gap between the flushing disc and the
strainer insert generates a drop in static
pressure (the Bernoulli effect). Only the part
of the region to the flushing disc is the exter-
nal pressure on the clean side of the filter
higher than in the region between the flush-
ing disc and the filter insert. This generates a
“suction” of the dirt particles from the filter
element.
By means of the flushing valve that is open
at the same time, and the pressure drop
thereby generated, the contamination is
flushed out of the filter.
Filtration and last flushing phase
While the flushing disc is reaching its initial
position the flushing valve remains open.
This enables the remaining particles to leave
the filter unit. During the upwards movement
of the flushing disc the lower 1/3-region of
the filter insert is also cleaned by means of a
self-cleaning effect produced by the flow
conditions generated in accordance of the
Bernoulli.
