1 Safety instructions and measures
Intended use
ThemodularSAMConnectGatewayallowstheinputofsignals(4to20mA),forexample
issuedbyexternaltransmitters.Furthermore,theintegratedGSMmoduleallowsremotedata
transmission.
Thedeviceisdesignedtooperateunderexactlydenedconditions(e.g.supplyvoltage,
temperature). Therefore, operators must ensure that the device is only used in operating
conditionsthatmeetthespecicationsusedforsizingthedeviceattheorderingstage.
SAMSON does not assume any liability for damage resulting from the failure to use the
deviceforitsintendedpurposeorfordamagecausedbyexternalforcesoranyother
externalfactors.
ÎRefertothetechnicaldataforlimitsandeldsofapplicationaswellaspossibleuses.
Reasonably foreseeable misuse
TheSAMConnectGatewayisnot suitable for the following applications:
−Useoutsidethelimitsdenedduringsizingandbythetechnicaldata
Furthermore, the following activities do not comply with the intended use:
−Use of non-original spare parts
−Performing maintenance activities not described in these instructions
Qualications of operating personnel
Thedevicemustbemounted,startedupandservicedbyfullytrainedandqualiedpersonnel
only; the accepted industry codes and practices are to be observed. According to these
mounting and operating instructions, trained personnel refers to individuals who are able to
judgetheworktheyareassignedtoandrecognizepossiblehazardsduetotheirspecialized
training,theirknowledgeandexperienceaswellastheirknowledgeoftheapplicable
standards.
Personal protective equipment
No personal protective equipment is required for the direct handling of the SAM Connect
Gateway.Workintheplantmaybenecessarythatrequirespersonalprotectiveequipment.

Revisions and other modications
Revisions,conversionsorothermodicationsoftheproductarenotauthorizedbySAMSON.
Theyareperformedattheuser'sownriskandmayleadtosafetyhazards,forexample.Fur-
thermore, the product may no longer meet the requirements for its intended use. Use of the
device is no longer permitted in this case.
Warning against residual hazards
To avoid personal injury or property damage, operators and operating personnel must pre-
venthazardsthatcouldbecausedinthedevicebytakingappropriateprecautions.Plantop-
eratorsandoperatingpersonnelmustobserveallhazardstatements,warningandcaution
notes in these mounting and operating instructions, especially for installation, start-up and
service work.
Responsibilities of the operator
Operators are responsible for proper use and compliance with the safety regulations. Opera-
tors are obliged to provide these mounting and operating instructions to the operating per-
sonnel and to instruct them in proper operation. Furthermore, operators must ensure that op-
eratingpersonnelorthirdpartiesarenotexposedtoanydanger.
Responsibilities of operating personnel
Operating personnel must read and understand these mounting and operating instructions as
wellasthespeciedhazardstatements,warningandcautionnotes.Furthermore,theoperat-
ing personnel must be familiar with the applicable health, safety and accident prevention
regulations and comply with them.

1.1 Notes on possible property damage
NOTICE
!
Risk of fatal injury due to electric shock (230V version).
ÎBeforeconnectingwiring,performinganyworkonthedeviceoropeningthede-
vice, disconnect the voltage supply and protect it against unintentional reconnection.
ÎOnly use power interruption devices that are protected against unintentional recon-
nection of the power supply.
Risk of damage to the electronics due to the incorrect connection of the electrical
power supply.
TheSAMConnectGatewayisdesignedtooperateunderexactlydenedelectricalcon-
ditions.
ÎObserve the permissible tolerances of the supply voltage.
ÎFor wiring, you are required to observe the relevant regulations concerning device
safety and electromagnetic compatibility.
Risk of damage to the device due to incorrect mounting position.
ÎMount the device in the upright position only.
Incorrect installation and removal of option modules will damage the SAM Connect
Gateway.
ÎBeforeinsertingorremovingtheoptionmodules,disconnectthesupplyvoltage.
Risk of malfunction due to incorrect power line frequency setting.
Thelocalpowerlinefrequencymustbeenteredtobeabletoproperlylteroutanydis-
turbanceswhicharetransmittedovergroundwiresorexternalpowersupplyunits.
ÎSet the local power line frequency by selecting the corresponding parameters.
The use of unapproved batteries will damage the SAM Connect Gateway.
ÎDonotuserechargeablebatteriesintheSAMConnectGateway.
Risk of device damage due to foreign particles entering it.
ÎDonotremovethepackagingandprotectivelm/protectivecapsuntilimmediately
before mounting and start-up.

ThemodularSAMConnectGatewayallows
theinputofsignals(4to20mA),forexam-
pleissuedbyexternaltransmitters.Forthis
purpose,fourslotsexistinthedevicetohold
option modules that can optionally be used
for the AI (analog input)and/orAIA (ana-
log input active) option modules.
At least one option module must always be
installed in the SAM Connect Gateway. See
section3.4 for details on the option mod-
ules.
Furthermore,theintegratedGSMmoduleal-
lows remote data transmission and connec-
tiontotheSAMTANKMANAGEMENTweb
portal.
Application
TheSAMConnectGatewaycanacceptupto
four4to20mAsignalsandtransferthe
dataovertheintegratedGSMmodule.Asa
result, transmitters installed in a plant (e.g.
Media5,Media6and/orothertransmitters
by other manufacturers) can be connected to
theSAMTANKMANAGEMENTweb
interface.Thisallowsthellinglevelsofup
tofourtanks(Fig.3-2)orthellingleveland
pressureoftwotanks(Fig.3-3)tobelogged
and managed on the SAM TANK

Operation
Four capacitive keys are used to operate the
SAMConnectGatewayandallowtheuser
to navigate within the menu on the display.
3.1 Conguration using the
TROVIS-VIEW software
TheSAMConnectGatewaycanbecong-
uredwithSAMSON'sTROVIS-VIEWSoft-
ware(version4).Forthispurpose,thegate-
way has a digital interface (SSP) to allow the
USBportofacomputertobeconnectedtoit
using an adapter cable (order no. 1400-
9740).
TheTROVIS-VIEWsoftwareenablestheuser
toeasilycongurethegatewayaswellas
view process parameters online.
TROVIS-VIEW can be downloaded free of
charge from our website at www.sam-
songroup.com > Service & Support > Down-
loads > TROVIS-VIEW.

3.4 Option modules
The gateway provides analog inputs through
the use of option modules to accept (4 to
20mA)analogsignalsfromllinglevelor
pressuresensorsofexternalequipment.Four
slots are available in the device.
UpondeliveryoftheSAMConnectGate-
way, at least one option module is installed.
Furtheroptionmodulescanberetrotted.
The following option modules are available:
−AI: Analog input
This module works passively and has
galvanically isolated inputs. It can accept
signals from devices with their own pow-
er supply.
−AIA: Analog input active
This AIA (analog input active) option
moduleworksactivelyandhasa12V
outputtopowerexternalequipmentthat
do not have their own power supply.
3.5 Power supply unit with
standby power supply
(SPS)
The power supply units include a battery
compartmentfora1.5Vbatterywhichpro-
vides standby power supply upon power
failure.
