2. PURPOSE
The CBRN protective one piece undergarment shall be worn together
with breathing protective mask (respirator) and breathing protective fil-
ter (filter canister), CBRN protective head protection (balaclava), CBRN
protective gloves and CBRN foot protection (=personal NBC protection
equipment). To accomplish an entire body protection the interface areas
between the additional protective equipment and the CBRN protective
one piece undergarment need to be suitable for the combined use and
the correct donning need to be ensured.
The CBRN protective one piece undergarment is put on (outside of
the contaminated area) when
• danger from a specific chemical warfare agent must be assumed
or
• a mission or task has to be fulfilled in a contaminated area.
The CBRN protective one piece undergarment is designed to provide
protection from chemical warfare agents in the gas or vapour form.
When properly maintained and combined with a suitable outer garment,
the complete ensemble will also provide protection against the general-
ly accepted battlefield threat level (10g/m²) of liquid chemical warfare
agent.
The CBRN protective one piece undergarment should
not be used when in contact with acids or alkalines.
CAUTION

Before use, check the CBRN protective one piece
undergarment for completeness and proper condition.
• The CBRN protective one piece undergarment
ensures the necessary protection only if the personnel:
úmaster the timely and intended use of the
protective one piece undergarment.
úare psychologically and physically able to carry out
missions under CBRN protection at any time.
• As chemical protective equipment may cause heat
strain of the wearer it is recommended that sweat
management underwear is used and that rest periods
of sufficient duration are scheduled.
4. STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
The CBRN protective one piece undergarment is manufactured from an
air permeable laminated single layer fabric compound:
• The outer ply of the compound is warp knitted fabric
• The inner ply consists of a monolayer of activated carbon spheres
(adsorptive layer)
• The lining ply (= layer next to the skin) is warp knitted fabric
4.1 MATERIAL COMPOSITION
• Covering layer (outer ply): 92%/8% Nomex®/ Elasthan, knit
• Adsorptive layer: 100% activated carbon SARATOGA®
• Lining fabric (worn next to skin): 92%/8 % Nomex®/ Elasthan, knit
SARATOGA®is a registered trademark of BLÜCHER®GmbH
5. PROTECTIVE PERFORMANCE
The textile fabric compound as mentioned in section 4.1 can offer protec-
tion against specific chemical warfare agents according to “TNO-PML
test methods for air-permeable and air-impermeable NBC protective
materials (PML 2004-PU2)”. For quality assurance, the material is tested
in combination with an outer layer material which has been taken from
the US Army Combat Uniform (ACU):
• Vapour test
(20 mg HD/m³, flow rate acc. to a wind speed of 5 m/sec, 12.56 cm²,
6 hours)
• Laid drop diffusive flow test
(10 g HD/m², 10 cm², 1 µl drops, 24 hours)

6. Mask / Balaclava
Depending on the design of the mask body and the resulting integration
with the balaclava, two donning options are defined:
In case of masks without any obstacles along the outer circumference
of the mask body, such as the SCOTT FRR/GSR, the balaclava is worn on
top of the mask (option a.)
In case of the presence of any obstacle like harness buckles on the outer
circumference of the mask body, as it is the case for the AVON Viking
respirator, the mask is worn on top of the hood (option b.)

6.3 HOW TO TAKE OFF A CONTAMINATED CBRN PROTECTIVE ONE PIECE
UNDERGARMENT (DOFFING)
ATTENTION While taking off the CBRN protective one piece
undergarment, the assistance of a second person
wearing protection equipment (respirator
and filter canister, protective gloves and body
protection equipment) is necessary.
Exposure to chemical warfare agents when wearing the one piece un-
dergarment requires special doffing procedures. The outer garment
should be assessed for liquid chemical warfare agent contamination
using approved procedures.
When taking off contaminated CBRN protective one piece undergar-
ment the following sequence is recommended:
1. Doff the top part of the outer garment. If butyl gloves are worn, do not
remove the butyl gloves. If the outer garment is a coverall instead
of a separate jacket and trousers, doff the top portion of the outer gar-
ment by rolling it out and down toward the waist so that the inner surfa-
ce instead of the outer surface is exposed as the garment is rolled down.
2. Doff the lower portion of the outer garment by rolling it in the same
way down to the ankles. If protective socks and combat boots are worn,
doff the combat boots but not the socks with the lower portion of the
outer garment. This should be accomplished by stepping out of the outer
garment and the combat boots at the same time. If butyl overboots are
worn instead of protective socks, remove only the butyl overboots when
removing the outer garment. The combat boots should be doffed later
with the one piece undergarment.
3. Doffing procedure for balaclava worn on top of the mask: Let the assi-
sting person cut open the balaclava starting from the neck at the center
back up to the butyl seal. Making sure that the mask is still correctly
placed on the head during the sequence. Balaclava worn underneath
the mask is not doffed at this stage of the procedure. Follow sequence 4
and see sequence 7 for the recommended doffing procedure.
4. Roll up the lower cuff part of the butyl and inner gloves that the as-
sisting person can cut the thumb loops and the lower sleeve part of the
one piece undergarment. Open the front zipper of the one piece under-
garment and doff the top while making fists with both hands to prevent
removal of the butyl gloves.
Observe the following strictly when taking off (doffing) a
contaminated CBRN protective one piece undergarment:
• Take off the equipment only out of the contaminated
area and only outside, however, if possible in a
protected, draught-free place which is, if possible,
covered with a roof.
• Observe the direction of the wind when taking off the
equipment.
• Avoid contact of the unprotected skin or underneath
worn body wear with the possibly contaminated
CBRN protective one piece undergarment.
Check for a tight fit
• of the undergarment sleeves on the protective gloves,
• of the undergarment trousers leg on the foot
protection
• of the undergarment hood on the head protection
(balaclava) on the respiratory mask
and adjust if deemed necessary.
After putting on the personal protection equipment,
get another person to check it for correct fit.

Transport a contaminated CBRN protective undergarment only in suita-
ble packaging (e.g. a plastic bag) and make sure it is sufficiently labelled.
6.4.2 Disposal
Disposing of the contaminated CBRN protective undergarment is to be
conducted in compliance with the relevant and valid environmental
regulations.
Do not touch a contaminated CBRN protective under-
garment with unprotected skin or underneath worn body
wear.
CAUTION
5. Doff the one piece undergarment bottom by rolling it down to the an-
kles and stepping out of it. If wearing protective socks, doff the socks.
If wearing combat boots, doff the combat boots with the one piece un-
dergarment bottom. This should be accomplished by stepping out of the
one piece undergarment bottom and combat boots at the same time.
6. Doff the butyl gloves and their glove liner.
7. Doffing procedure for balaclava worn underneath the mask:
remove both the mask and the balaclava by inserting the undressed
persons hands under the balaclava and roll it with the mask straps off.
