Before you start
This manual is intended for the Clinician and home care Provider. Under no
circumstances should it be provided to the patient.
Safety Precautions
WARNING This signals a risk of injury or accident to the patient.
•
Pay attention to the Safety Precautions indicated in the DreamStar™ Patient Manual.
•
Refer to the Patient Manual for all information relating to installation, maintenance and storage of the
device.
•
Without exception, be sure to supply the patient ith the Patient Manual and accessory use
instructions.
•
Use only the accessories that the manufacturer has authorised for use ith this device, as listed in
this manual.
•
During treatment, only equipment included in the List of authorised accessories should be connected
to the device USB connector.
•
To ensure that maintenance is performed correctly and to avoid any possibility of damage, only
qualified personnel are permitted to perform maintenance on the device and make authorised changes
to it. The user assumes full responsibility for any device malfunction that results from the device being
maintained by personnel other than personnel authorised.
•
Never use the device ithout making sure that an air intake filter is installed.
•
If you observe any anomaly in the device, do not begin treatment.
•
The s ivel outlet elbo , 70° 22 mm diameter, is an accessory intended for single patient use
In the following cases where the device is equipped with a water chamber:
•
In case of heated humidification feature use, the cover must be removed and replaced by a ater
chamber.
•
When the heated humidification feature is enabled on a device equipped ith a ater chamber, the
patient must take, precautions to eliminate the risk of introducing ater into the device and causing
irreversible damage to it. The device must be positioned on a stable horizontal surface and must not
be tilted.
•
The ater chamber should al ays be emptied before moving or transporting the device.
CAUTION
This indicates that there is a possibility of material damage to this
device or any other device.
•
If the device is equipped ith a cover here the ater chamber should be, the heated humidification
feature must be disabled. Other ise, the device may apply the heat setting. Ho ever, there ould be
no risk as the device ould not reach high temperatures. If you are unsure, check the Service menu
to confirm that the heated humidification feature is disabled.
•
Since DreamStar™ devices are medical electrical devices, instructions concerning electromagnetic
compatibility indicated in this manual should be follo ed during installation.
•
Like all medical electrical devices, DreamStar™ devices are vulnerable to interference from mobile and
portable RF communication equipment.
Recommended use
The DreamStar™ produ t range devi es are intended to treat patients suffering from Obstru tive Sleep
Apnea Syndrome (OSA) in patients over 30 kg (66 lbs.) and breathing spontaneously. They an be used at
home or in a sleep enter.

Contra-indications
Studies have shown that the use of positive pressure is ontra-indi ated in some patients affe ted by any of
the following pre-existent pathologies:
•Severe bullous emphysema or emphysema previously ompli ated by pneumothorax.
•Pneumoen ephalus, trauma or re ent surgery with sequela of ranio-nasopharyngeal fistula.
•De ompensated ardia insuffi ien y or hypotension, parti ularly in ase of de reased blood volume or
ardia arrhythmia.
•Dehydration.
•Massive epistaxis or history of massive epistaxis. A ute sinusitis, otitis media, or perforated tympani
membrane.
•Tra heotomy.
In addition, be ause positive pressure is known to affe t ardia output in ertain patients, patient arterial
pressure and heart rate should be losely monitored when starting treatment at an effe tive pressure. The
risks and benefits of treatment by Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) must be weighed ase by
ase in su h subje ts. This evaluation should take into a ount the fa t that the DreamStar™ devi e an be
set to deliver pressures up to 20 mH
2
O and, under ertain fault onditions, stati pressures up to 30 mH
2
O
are possible. The DreamStar™ devi e therefore should not be used if su h pressure levels pose a risk to the
patient.

Available Features
The DreamStar™ Intro and DreamStar™ Info devi es operate in ontinuous mode (CPAP), i.e. the devi e
delivers a onstant pressure level.
The DreamStar™ Auto devi e operates in either onstant mode (CPAP) or in automati mode (Auto-CPAP),
i.e. the pressure flu tuates between a minimum pressure and a maximum pressure as a fun tion of
respiratory events dete ted.
The first 5 minutes of operation of the devi e are not in luded in the ramp time or laten y time. During this
time, depending on the devi e in question, omplian e and AutoCPAP features are unavailable.
Heated Humidification feature available on Evolve models
The DreamStar™ Intro Evolve, DreamStar™ Info Evolve and DreamStar™ Auto Evolve devi es an be
delivered either with a over or with a water hamber. These devi es are equipped with a heated
humidifi ation feature whi h you an enable or disable.
The heated humidifi ation fun tion is enabled on the devi es delivered with a water hamber and it is
disabled on the devi es delivered with a over.
If the devi e is equipped with a over and if you want to use the heated humidifi ation feature, it is
ne essary to order a water hamber and to pro eed as follows:
1. Remove the over from the devi e and repla e it with the water hamber by referring to the Patient
Manual.
2. Enable the heated humidifi ation fun tion by referring to Item 4 of the Servi e menu in the settings
pro edure of the devi e on erned page 17, 21 or 27.
Pressure Alter
You an enable this feature whi h provides the option to the patient to hange the pres ribed pressure by ±
1 mH

O.
Note: This feature is only available in CPAP mode.
Auto O feature
Fun tionality allowing to automati ally start the treatment without pressing the devi e On/Off button.
Mask unplugged feature
If the patient removes his mask, the devi e automati ally swit hes to low power. The ma hine will restore
normal power when the mask is re onne ted or if the On/Off button or the ramp button is
pressed. Otherwise, the devi e will stop after 30 minutes.
Note: If the patient uses a resistive interfa e (full fa e mask with anti-asphyxia valve), a spe ifi
alibration of the pneumati onfiguration must be arried out so that the DreamStar ™ unit
dete ts that the mask is unplugged.
Patient reminders
The DreamStar™ devi e has a patient reminder feature to help the patient remember key events su h as
filter and mask hanges, devi e inspe tions, and memory ard omplian e data downloads on the memory
ard. This feature is des ribed under “Reminders about key events”, on page 31.

Comfort Calibration
Available on DreamStar™ Info / Info Evolve and DreamStar™ Auto / Auto Evolve , the (C.C.+) Comfort
Calibration feature is intended to in rease the treatment pressure during inspiration and to de rease it
during expiration to make the patient's breathing more omfortable during the treatment. It an be enabled
ontinuously or during the ramp.
Ramp feature
Whatever the type of ramp used, the ramp feature an be stopped during devi e operation by pressing the
ramp button for 2 se onds. It an be rea tivated by stopping and restarting the devi e.
The omfort pressure, the ramp time (only if the time ramp is sele ted and if omfort pressure < pres ribed
pressure) and the maximum ramp time an be adjusted.

Device Settings
The adjustment of the therapeuti pressure must be determined by the pres ribing physi ian for ea h
patient individually, with the onfiguration of the equipment to be used, in luding the a essories. The
orre t installation and positioning of the patient interfa e onstitute a riti al ondition for the proper
operation of the devi e.
The most re ent omplian e data are re orded by session in the devi e memory within one year and 8
hours usage day, and they an be retrieved for analysis using DreamStar™ Analyze software.
The settings are a essible dire tly on all the devi es. You an also adjust the settings of the DreamStar™
Info, DreamStar™ Info Evolve, DreamStar™ Auto and DreamStar™ Auto Evolve using the DreamStar™
Analyze software on a omputer onne ted via a RS232 or Mini USB able, or via a
wireless connection
WARNING
Before changing the device settings, confirm that the device delivers sufficient airflo hen it is in
operating mode. If it does not, stop immediately and contact the technical support.
Definitions
Comfort pressure: level of pressure produ ed by the devi e when the time ramp (T.Ramp) or the indexed
ramp (I.Ramp) starts up so that the patient an go to sleep omfortably.
When the DreamStar™ Auto / Auto Evolve devi e is in Auto-CPAP mode, the pressure
is adjusted to the omfort pressure or to the minimum pressure (if omfort pressure <
minimum pressure) when the devi e dete ts that there has been no respiratory y le
for more than 2 minutes or when it dete ts a high pressure.
Compliance counter: total time during whi h the patient has effe tively breathed in the mask (time
subtra ted from the time when the mask was removed and the time with no
respiration).
Heating time: time needed for the devi e to rea h the operating level required by the heated
humidifi ation feature.
Hour counter: devi e operating time (ON/OFF).
IFL: Inspiratory Flow Limit.
Maximum pressure: maximum pressure that the DreamStar™ Auto / Auto Evolve an deliver in Auto-CPAP

Ramp time: This is the time taken by the devi e in CPAP mode to rea h the pres ribed pressure
from the omfort pressure or to a tivate the Auto-CPAP feature when the time ramp is
enabled.
Session: period during whi h data is re orded to memory between the time the devi e starts
operation and the time the devi e goes into standby. A session is started after the
devi e has been on for at least 5 minutes without interruption.
Water chamber: hamber ontaining the water ne essary for humidifi ation.

The four buttons on the front of the devi e allow one to a ess the devi e settings menu, s roll through
different pages, or possibly modify the value of ertain parameters within these pages.

patient tubing with water hamber), Ø22mm (22mm in diameter patient tubing), Ø22mm+HH (22mm in
diameter patient tubing with water hamber) and SPECIFIC (other onfiguration).
Note:
If the SPECIFIC patient ir uit option is sele ted, alibration must be laun hed. Press the ramp
button to enable alibration. If no alibration is PRESENT, the alibration goes ba k to the default
alibration. See "Spe ifi alibration of the pneumati onfiguration" paragraph, on page 32.
