GENIRAL INFORMATION
Model 1232 consists of a 2-speed tape deck 528.58140and amplifier 528.59?20 to produce
or play back quarter-or-half-track monaural recordings. A stereo preamplifier is included
and when connected to an external amplifier, prerecorded quarter-or-hal.f-track stereo tapes
may be played back.
Model 1234 consists of a 2-speed tape deck 528. 58140, amplifiers 528. 59?20 and 528. 59890
toproduce and play back quarter-or-half-track monaural recordings and playback prerecorded
quarter-or-half -track stereo tapes.
Monaural recordings can be made from a radio, phonograph, or T. V. in addition to
those made directly f rom the microphone.
The two tape speeds are 3 3/ 4 and 7 l/2 ips. The recording time for each track is as
follows:

Record Lock

Fast Foruard
The tape will advance at a rapid speed to the
desired spot on the tape when this control is depressed.
Fast Ra{ind
The tape will rewind at a rapid speed when this
control is depressed.
Mike
When recording with a microphone, this input
is used.
Radio-P hono
This input is used when recording directly from
a radio, phonograph, or television receiver.
OPERATING
Threading the Tape
l. Depress the Stop control.
2. Place a reel of tape on the right-hand (supply)
spindle (76).
3. Place an empty reel on the left-hand (take-up)
spindre (?6).
4. Rotate both reels until they are seated over the
spindLe key.
5. Unwind approximately12 inches of tape from the
right-hand reel and insert it into the tape slot.
Make sure the dull-coated side faces the rear of
the recorder.
6. Insert thefree end ofthe tape into the slotof the
left-hand reel. Turn tfie reel several turns to
secure the tape to the reel and to take all slack
up between reels.
Microphone Recording - Half-Track
l. Plug the microphone into the "Mike" jack.
2. Turn theFunction control to the "Play" position
and then pull the Record Lock Button up and si-
multaneously turn the Function control to tJre
right until a cliek is heardl then release both
controls.
3. Set the Main Volume control so the Record
Indicator flashes on the Ioudest passages.
4. Set the Speed control for the desired speed. Up
f.or 3 3/ 4 ips and Down for 7 L/ 2 ips.
5. Set the Track Selector to AlBl position.
6. Hold the microphone 12 to l8 inches from your
mouth and speak in a normal manner to setthe
Recording Level Indicator for correct volume.
7. Depress the Run control.
External Speaker
This input is used for connecting an external
amplifier orspeaker to the record, or headphones for
monitoring recordings that are being made.
Stereo 0utput
This output isfor connecting an external ampli-
fier speaker unit tothe recorder for the second chan-
nel for playback of stereo tapes.

Push 0ff/0n Switch
Depressing this button turns the External Am-
plifier-Speaker unit on and off.
Recording Level I ndicator
This indicates the correct level to set the vol-
ume control during a recording. It should be set so
it flashes occasionally on the loudest passages.

l. Place the microphone about 6 to 12 inches in
front of the loudspeaker.
2. Adjust thevolume control ofthe sound source to
a desired listening level.
3. Set the tone control to treble or high.
4. Set the recording level and record as under
"Microphone Recording Half-Traek or Quarter-
Track".
Monaural Playback - Half -Track

Turn the Function Selector to Play position.

After all tape is wound onto the takeup reel,
remove the takeup reel, turn it over and place
on supply spindle. Rethread the tape and follow
the above procedure to play the second track.
Monaural Playback - Quarter-Track
l. Thread tape as under "Threading the Tape".
2. Turn the Function Selector to Play position.
3. Adjust Main Volume to desired level.
4. Set speed eontrol in Up position f.or3 3/ 4 ipsor
Down for 7 L/ 2 ips depending on the speed the
reeording was made.
5. Set Track Selector in AIBI position.
6. Depress the Run key.
7. After all tape is wound onto the takeup reel,
remove the takeup reel, turn it over and place
on supply spindle. Rethread the tape and follow
the above procedure forplaying the secondtrack.

8. After all the tape is wound onto the takeup reel,
remove the takeup reel and place it on the supply
spindle, set Track Selector to A2B2 position.
Thread the tape and follow the above procedure
for playing tracks three and four but leave the
Track Selector in the AZB2 position.
Stereo Playback - Two-Track
l. Turn Function Selector to Play position.
2. Turn Main Volume to desired listening level.
3. Turn Stereo Volume to desired listening level.
4. Set Speed Selector to the speed at which the re-
cording was made.
Set Track Selector to Stereo.
Connect theStereo Speaker System tothe Stereo
Output socket on the tape recorder.
Depress the Run key.
Turn Tone control to the right for treble and to
left for bass.
Stereo Playback - Four-Track
Use same procedure usedin "Stereo Playback-
Two-Track" with the following addition.
I" When all the tape is wound onto the takeup reel,
remove the reel, turn it over, and place it on
the supply spindle" Thread the tapeand proceed
as outlined in 'Stereo Playback - HaU-Track".

Fast Rewind
Torewind the tape atend of reel or to a desired
section, depress the Fast Rewind key and hold until the
desired section is reached and then release.
Fast Forward
To advance the tape at a rapid speed, depress
the Fast Forward key and hold until the desired section
is reached and then release.
To Erase a Recording
In record position, any recording on the tape is
automatically erased before anew recording is made.
Should it be desired to erase a recording without re-
cording new material, follow the normal recording
procedure but set the volume control to the full counter-
clockwise position.
To Edit and Splice Tape
N0TE: It is impossible to edit and splice one
track of a two-track tape without affecting
the other. Recordings to be edited should
be limited to one-track tapes.
I. Tape may be edited by cutting out unwanted
portions, or by joining selections into another
sequence. Announcements ean be inserted be-
tweenselections, etc. Unusedtapecanbespliced
for reuse.
2. For best results, cut tape at a slight diagonal,
butt ends together and fasten on the glossy side
with splicing tape. Trim off any excessive
width.
To Remove Recorder from the Case
l. Remove aII control knobs.
2. Remove mechanism cover (4).
3. Remove head cover (13).
4. Remove four screws from top pfate (5) and lift
top plate off.
5. Remove two screws from the amplifier control
excutcheon and remove the escutcheon.
6. Remove t\ro screws lrom the speaker grill and
remove it.
?. Remove two screws on the bottom of the ease
and two screws from the front of the case.
Lift the recorder from the case.
To reassemble, reverse the foregoing proced-
ure.
To Remove Arnplifier f rom Tape Transport
l. Unplug all connecting leads.
2. Remove two screws on each side of recorder.
3. LiJt tape transport up and away from the am-
plifier.
4, To reassemble, reverse the foregoing proced-
ure.
