electricians,qualiedengineersandnavalarchitects.Itisassumedthatyouunderstand
thegeneralprinciplesofmaritimeelectronicequipment.Youmustalsobefamiliarwith
theinstallationofelectronicandmechanicalproducts.Youareexpectedtohavebasic
mechanicalskillsandfamiliaritywithhandlingofsensitiveelectronicequipment.
Installationinstructionsanddrawings
Theinformationinthisdocumentmustberegardedasgeneralguidelinesand
recommendationsonly.Theinstallationshipyardmustdesignandmanufacture
installationhardwaretoteachindividualtransduceronthevessel.

scienceapplications.Thebeamwidthis11degreesatnominaloperationalfrequency18
kHz.Thetransduceruses44"tonpilz"elementsorganizedinfourseparatesectors.
Duetoitslowfrequency,theSimrad
ES18isidealforusewithdeepwater
measurements.Maximumrangeis
approximately7000meters.
Thetransducerisnormallymountedush
withthehullplatingorthebottomofa
blister.Aclampingringisusedtosecure
thetransducerbodytoamountingring.
Themountingringisweldedintothehull
plating.
Thetransducercanalsobeushmounted
inthesamemanneratthebottomofablisteroradropkeel.
Thetransducercablepenetratesthehullusingacablegland.Thiscableglandconsistsof
abushing,washers,arubbergasketandapackingnipple.

Tosecurelonglifeandaccurateresults,thetransducermustbehandledcorrectly.
Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateinstrument.Incorrectactionsmay
damagethetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:
1Donotactivatethetransducerwhenitisoutofthewater.
2Donothandlethetransducerroughly.Avoidimpacts.
3Donotexposethetransducertodirectsunlightorexcessiveheat.

Transportprotection
Sometransducersaredeliveredwithacoverplatetoprotectthefaceduringtransport
andinstallation.Letthisplatestayonaslongaspossible,butdonotforgettoremove
itbeforethevesselgoestosea.
Cleaningandpaintingthetransducerface
Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarine
growthisexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES18.
Thetransducerhasnotbeendesignedwithanyprotectionagainstbiologicalfouling.
Wheneveropportunityarise,typicallywhenthevesselisdry-docked,thetransducerface
mustbecleanedforshellsandothermarinegrowth.
•Becarefulsothatyoudonotaccidentallymakecutsorinictotherphysicaldamage
tothetransducerface.
•Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesynthetic
detergentandfreshwater.Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstrate
canberemovedcarefullywithapieceofwoodorplastic.
•Donotusehigh-pressurewater,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducer.
Anti-foulingpaintmaybeappliedtothetransducerface.Tominimizethenegative
acousticaleffectsthelayerofanti-foulingpaintmustbeasthinaspossible.

Note
Theanti-foulingpaintwillreducetheacousticalperformanceofthetransducer.The
surfaceroughnessofthetransducersubstrateandthethicknessofthepaintmayalso
inuencetheperformance.KongsbergMaritimecannotbeheldresponsibleforany
negativeconsequencesoftheanti-foulingpaint.

Becausesomepainttypesmaybeaggressivetothepolyurethaneinthetransducer,
consultourlistofapprovedpaints.Thelistcanalsobefoundonhttp://www.simrad.com.
Observetherelevantinstructionsandsafetyinformationprovidedbythepaint

Specialrulesforacousticwindows
Arctictankshaveacousticwindowsmadeofpolycarbonate.Thesemustneitherbe
paintednorcleanedwithchemicals.Acousticwindowsmustnotbeexposedtodirect
sunlight.

Inspectingandcleaningthetransducerface
Marinegrowth(biologicalfouling)onthetransducerfacereducestheES18performance.
Forthisreason,itisimportanttokeepthetransducerfaceclean.Everytimeyourvessel
isindrydock,youmustremovethemarinegrowth.Atthesametime,youmustinspect
thetransducercloselyforphysicaldamage.
Prerequisites
Thefollowingtoolsandconsumablesarerequired.
•Personalprotection
•Freshwater
•Amildsyntheticdetergentandaplasticbrush
•Apieceofwoodorplasticwithoutsharpcorners
•Citricacid(<50%)(onlyifrequired)
Context
Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarine
growthisexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES18.Wheneveropportunity
arise,typicallywhenthevesselisdry-docked,thetransducerfacemustbecleanedfor
shellsandothermarinegrowth.
Itisimportanttocheckthetransducerforphysicaldamage.Anycracks,fracturesor
holesintheredprotectivecoatingmayresultinawaterleak,andaleakmaycause
irreparabledamagetothetransducer.
Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateinstrument.Incorrectactionsmay
damagethetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:
•Donotactivatethetransducerwhenitisoutofthewater.
•Donothandlethetransducerroughly.Avoidimpacts.
•Donotexposethetransducertodirectsunlightorexcessiveheat.
•Donotusehigh-pressurewater,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducerface.
•Donotdamagetheouterprotectiveskinofthetransducerface.
•Donotliftthetransducerbythecable.
•Donotsteponthetransducercable.
•Donotdamagethetransducercable,andavoidexposuretosharpobjects.
Procedure
1Allowforsufcientaccesstocleanandinspecttheentiresurfaceofthetransducer.

2Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesynthetic
detergentandfreshwater.
Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstratecanberemoved
carefullywithapieceofwoodorplastic.Ifrequired,youcanalsousecitricacid.
Apply,leaveitworkingforseveralhours,andrinsethoroughlywithfreshwater.
Note
Donotusehigh-pressurewater ,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducerface.Donotdamagetheouterprotectiveskinofthetransducerface.
3Allowthetransducersurfacetodry.
4Doathoroughvisualinspectionofthetransducer.
Checkfordents,scratches,holesorotherdamagetothesurface.
Ifyoundsuspiciousdamage,takehighresolutionphotosthatshowthedamage.
ContactyourdealerortheSimradsupportorganizationforadvice.
5Ifnecessary,applyanti-foulingpaintasdescribedinthededicatedprocedure.
Note
Becausesomepainttypesmaybeaggressivetothepolyurethaneinthetransducer,
consultourlistofapprovedpaints.
