electricians,qualiedengineersandnavalarchitects.Itisassumedthatyouunderstand
thegeneralprinciplesofmaritimeelectronicequipment.Youmustalsobefamiliarwith
theinstallationofelectronicandmechanicalproducts.Youareexpectedtohavebasic
mechanicalskillsandfamiliaritywithhandlingofsensitiveelectronicequipment.

Theinformationinthisdocumentmustberegardedasgeneralguidelinesand
recommendationsonly.Theinstallationshipyardmustdesignandmanufacture
installationhardwaretoteachindividualtransduceronthevessel.

theinstallationcanbegin.Theshipownerandshipyarddoingtheinstallationare
responsibleforobtainingandpayingforsuchapproval.

TheSimradEC150-3Cisa150kHzphased-arraytransducerdesignedforcurrent
prolingapplications.Itoffers2.8degreesbeamwidthforaccuratecurrentprolingand
2.5degreesbeamwidthwhenappliedasasplit-beamechosoundertransducer.
TheEC150-3Cisdeliveredwithapowersupplyandanopen-endedcable.The
transducercableis40metreslong.Oneendofthecableisconnectedtothetransducer.
Theotherendisterminatedinthepowersupply.
Thetransducerisnormallymountedush
withthehullplatingorthebottomofa
blister.Aclampingringisusedtosecure
thetransducerbodytoamountingring.
Themountingringisweldedintothehull
plating.
Thetransducercanalsobeushmounted
inthesamemanneratthebottomofa
blisteroradropkeel.
Thetransducercablepenetratesthehull
usingacablegland.Thiscablegland
consistsofabushing,washers,arubber
gasketandapackingnipple.

TheSimradEC150-3CTransducerisaprecisioninstrumentforscienticmeasurements.
TheSimradEC150-3Cisa150kHzphased-arraytransducerdesignedforcurrent
prolingapplications.Itoffers2.8degreesbeamwidthforaccuratecurrentproling
and2.5degreesbeamwidthwhenappliedasasplit-beamechosoundertransducer.In
ordertoobtainprecisiondatathatarebothdetailedandcorrect,itisnecessarytoalign
thetransducer,measurethelocationandoffsetofeachsensorinrelationtothevessel’s
coordinatesystem,andcalibratethecompleteEC150-3Cpriortouse.
ThequalityassurancetasksrequiredforEC150-3Cinclude:
•Aligningthetransducerduringinstallation
•Dimensionalsurveying
•Calibration
ThealignmentanddimensionalsurveyingmustbedoneduringtheEC150-3Cinstallation
withthevesselindrydock.Therstcalibrationoftheacousticdopplercurrentproler
(ADCP)functionalityisnormallydoneatseaduringtheSeaAcceptanceTest.This
calibrationmaynotbecomplete,andmustthenberepeatedlater.Thecalibrationisthen
repeatedatregularinterfaces,andpriortoeachsurvey.
Alignment
ThealignmenttasksrequiredforEC150-3Cinclude:
•Measureandadjustthetransducertoensurethatithasbeenmountedhorizontally
withinthegiventolerances.
•Measureandadjustthetransducertoensurecorrectorientation.
Note
Aligningthetransducerforcorrectinstallationwithinthegiventolerancesrequires
professionalskills.TheinstallationengineersfromKongsbergMaritimeareneither
equippednortrainedtoalignatransducer,andtheyhavenomeansofverifyingthe
resultsuntilcalibrationatseahasbeendone.
Dimensionalsurveying
ThedimensionalsurveyingtasksrequiredforEC150-3Cinclude:
•Deningthevesselcoordinatesystem
Thevesselcoordinatesystemisestablishedtodenetherelativephysicallocationsof
systemsandsensors.Whenyouhaveseveraldifferentsensorsandtransducerson
yourvessel,andyouwisheachofthemtoprovideaccuratedata,youneedtoknow
theirrelativephysicalpositions.

•Deningthelocationoftheorigininthecoordinatesystem
Theoriginisthecommonreferencepointwhereallthreeaxisinthevesselcoordinate
systemmeet.Allphysicallocationsofthevessel’ssensors(radarandpositioning
systemantennas,echosounderandsonartransducers,motionreferenceunits,etc.)
arereferencedtotheorigin.
•Deningthevessel’scentreline
•Measuringthelocationandorientationofeachsensor(orsensorantenna)inthe
coordinatesystem
Bymeansofthevesselcoordinatesystem,thephysicallocationofeverysensorcan
bedenedusingthreenumericalvaluesforX,YandZ.Thesevaluesmustdene
theverticalandhorizontaldistancesfromasinglereferencepoint;theorigin.The
accuracyofthethreenumericalvaluesforX,YandZdenestheaccuracyofthe
sensordata.
•MeasuringthelocationandorientationoftheEC150-3Ctransducerinthecoordinate
system
Note
Determiningtherelativepositionsandorientationsofthesensorsandthetransducer
withhighaccuracyisimportant.Thisrequiresprofessionallandsurveyingdoneby
qualiedandtrainedsurveyorsusingprovensurveyequipmentandmethods.We
recommendthatyouusethird-partyconsultantswithwellprovenexperiencewithvessel
dimensionalcontrol.Sufcienttimeandsatisfactoryworkconditionsmustbegiven
tothesurveywork.TheinstallationengineersfromKongsbergMaritimeareneither
equippednortrainedtododimensionalsurveying.
TheinformationprovidedbythedimensionalsurveyisenteredintotheEC150-3C
softwareasinstallationparameters.
ADCPcalibration
Duringtheseatrials,calibrationsurveysarerequiredasdescribedintheEC150-3C
enduserdocumentation.
InordertocheckandverifytheperformanceoftheEC150-3Csystem,westrongly
recommendthatcalibrationsurveysaredoneatregularintervals,orpriortoanylarge
survey.Ifexistingsensorshavebeenreplaced,ornewsensorshavebeeninstalled,anew
calibrationisalwaysrequired.Anewcalibrationmayalsoberequiredafteranupdateof
theEC150-3Csoftware.Refertothesoftwarereleasenote.
TheinformationprovidedbythecalibrationisenteredintotheEC150-3Csoftwareas
operationalparameters.Thisisdoneautomatically.

Note
Calibrationmustbetakenseriously.Thenalvericationofcorrectinstallationcan
onlybedoneduringcalibrationatsea.Installationandoperationalparametersthat
donotmeettheaccuracyrequirementsmayleadtoamalfunctioningEC150-3C
system.Toachievethebestresults,thecalibrationmustbeplannedanddonecarefully.
Iftheaccuracyrequirementsarenotmet,andthisisfoundtobethereasonfora
malfunctioningsystem,thevesselwillmostlikelyneedtobedrydockedinorderto
repeatthedimensionalsurvey.
