Notes:
♦The description which follows relates only to
the vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 using
the programme card version 5. .
♦If see literature appears in the display, re-
fer to the text relating to the fault code in the
fault table.
♦Use of the fault reader V.A.G 1551 (with pro-
gramme card version 8. ) with integrated
printer is similar although slight differences
in the readouts in the display are possible.

The control unit version is dis layed when you
connect the vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552
and select engine electronics control unit
⇒ age 01-3.

Refer to the table below for the requirements
which must be met for selecting the desired func-
tions.
1) Perform only if ignition is switched on and
engine does not start (o erate starter first
of all for at least 6 seconds).
2) Must be erformed after the following o -
erations:
Re lacing engine control unit (J220), throt-
tle valve control unit (J338) or engine, or
when battery is re-connected.
3) Only ossible once coolant tem erature is
more than 80 °C. Before this, this function
is inhibited.

Test conditions
lBattery volta e at least 11.5 V
lFuses 10, 12, 29 and 32 o.k.
lEarth connections at earbox and on left
below battery o.k.
Procedure
K- Connect the vehicle system tester V.A.G
1552 with the cable V.A.G 1551/3.
After the vehicle system tester has been con-
nected:
- Dependin on the desired function, you have
to:
Switch on i nition
or
Start the en ine ⇒ pa e 01-2, table of Avail-
able Functions.
If the readouts which appear in the display are
not the same as in the description below, please
refer to the followin points:
Notes:
♦If Fault in data transfer! is displayed be-
cause of an incorrect entry, disconnect ca-
ble at fault reader, plug in again and repeat
these steps.
K♦If one of the following messages appears in
the display, carry out fault finding according
to the Fault Finding Programme for Diagno-
sis able.

should be idling for this step.

Fault memory is erased
KReadout in display:
- Press 06 to select the function End data
transfer and confirm the entry with the key
Q.
If one or several faults are stored:
KReadout of fault number in display, e.g.:
- Press → key.
KReadout of source of fault with type of fault in
display, e.g.:
- Press → key.
KReadout in display:
- Press 06 for the function End data transfer
and confirm entry with the key Q.
- Rectify the faults displayed by referring to the
fault table ⇒ page 01-9.
Note:
When carrying out test and removal and instal-
lation work, our control modules may also de-
tect faults such as connectors unplugged. For
this reason, it is necessary to interrogate and
erase the fault memories of all the control units
after concluding the work. Follow the procedure
below:
- Press the key 0 twice for the address word
00 Automatic test sequence and confirm
the entry with the key Q. V.A.G 1552 trans-
mits all the known address words one after
the other.
- Erase fault memory ⇒ page 01-7.

to carry out a road test.

♦Coolant temperature should rise to more
than 80 °C.
♦Once this temperature is reached, the
operating states of
idling

should be achieved several times.
♦Engine speed should be increased to
more than 3500 rpm at full throttle.
Procedure
K- Connect vehicle s stem tester V.A.G 1552
with cable V.A.G 1551/3 ⇒ page 01-3.
- Once again interrogate the fault memor of
the control unit (function 02) ⇒ page 01-5.
KReadout in displa :
- If onl test and removal and installation work
has been carried out on the engine electron-
ics, press the ke s 0 and 2 for the function
Interrogate fault memor and confirm en-
tr with the ke Q.
If test and removal and installation work which
also affects other control units, was carried out,
ou have to conclude the work b interrogating
and erasing the fault memories of all the control
units. Adopt the following procedure:
- Press the ke 0 twice for the address word
00 Automatic test sequence and confirm
the entr with the ke Q. V.A.G 1552 trans-
mits all the known address words one after
the other.
KThe number of faults stored appears in the dis-
pla .
If one or several faults are stored:
The stored faults are displa ed one after the
other.
KAfter the stored faults have been displa ed, the
following readout appears:

If you switched off the ignition between Interro-
gating fault memory and Erasing fault me-
mory, the fault memory is then not erased.
