utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together.
This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.
Caution: Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the
appropriate electric inspection authority, or electricians, as appropriate.
The Load Number (LN) assigned to each terminal denotes the percentage of the total load to be
connected to a telephone loop which is used by the device, to prevent overloading. The termination
on a loop may consist of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the total of
the Load Numbers of all the devices does not exceed 100. For example, LN= 20 designates a Load
Number of 20.
WARNING
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or
moisture.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the cabinet. Refer servicing to
qualified personnel only.

the other party but the other party cannot

Placing the phone units
Choosing the best location for the base unit
Where you place the base unit affects the reception quality of the
handset. Therefore, refer to the following when finding a place for
the base unit.
Away from television
sets and other
electronic equipment.
Away from noise sources
such as a window by a
street with heavy traffic.
Away from heat sources,
such as radiators, airducts,
and sunlight.
Away from a
microwave oven.
Away from excessive
moisture, dust,
mechanical vibration,
or shock.
Away from a personal
computer.
Near a central location
Caution
The cordless telephone operates at a frequency that may cause
interference to nearby TVs and VCRs; the base unit should not be
placed near or on top of a TV or VCR; and, if interference is
experienced, moving the cordless telephone farther away from the
TV or VCR will often reduce or eliminate the interference.

Read the next page first if you want to hang the base unit on a wall.

1Plug one end of the long telephone line cord
(supplied) into the TEL LINE jack, and the other
end into a telephone outlet.
2Connect one end of the AC power adaptor
(supplied) to the DC IN 9V jack, and the other
end to an AC outlet.
3Fully extend the antenna.
Make sure it points toward the ceiling.
pNote on the AC power adaptor
Use only the AC power adaptor supplied. Do not use any other
AC power adaptor.

Connect the AC power adaptor
to a continuous power supply;
otherwise, the battery pack being
charged will have a shorter life.

Be sure to catch the AC power
adaptor cord on the hook after
you set the DIAL MODE switch.

Hanging the base unit on a wall
Setting up
/Placing the phone units

To mount the wall bracket
directly on the wall, use the
supplied screws.
1Press the AC power adaptor cord and the short
telephone line cord into the wall bracket.
2Hook the wall bracket to the wall plate and plug
the telephone line cord into the telephone
outlet.
3Insert the tabs on the top of the wall bracket
into the base unit and press the phone so that
the lower tabs on the wall bracket go into the
base unit.
Then extend the antenna fully.
4Connect the AC power adaptor and the
telephone line cord.
For details, see the “Connecting the base unit” section
(page 9).

Preparing the battery packs
Charging the battery packs
Setting up
The two supplied battery packs must be charged before you can use
them. One should be inserted into the handset to operate it. The other
may remain in the base unit to allow for a continuous supply of fully
charged battery packs. Also, should any power interruption occur,
the battery in the base unit will provide backup power during the
interruption.
1Insert one of the supplied battery packs
completely into the charging compartment.
The CHARGE lamp on the base unit lights.
2Charge the battery pack for about 10 hours.
When charging is completed, the CHARGE lamp goes off.
pNote
Make sure that the base unit is connected to a continuous power
supply.
If the base unit’s power supply is interrupted (for example, if
power is cut off every night), then the battery will provide backup
power, and will be discharged. Frequent charging and
discharging will shorten the battery’s life.
If the base unit is not connected to a continuous power supply,
the battery charged in the base unit will be effective for a shorter
period of time than a fully charged battery pack when installed in
the handset.
!
If a battery pack is brand new or
completely discharged, it may
take 10 minutes or more before
the CHARGE lamp lights.

/Preparing the battery packs
After you have fully charged a battery pack in the base unit, install it
in the handset as follows.
1Slide open the battery compartment lid.
2Remove the charged battery pack from the base
unit and insert it into the handset’s battery
compartment.
Press the lever on the base unit’s charging compartment
to release the battery pack.
3Replace the battery compartment lid.
pNotes on charging
• The battery pack supplied uses a unique lead acid battery which
works best when recharged often. Unlike nickel-cadmium
batteries, you do not need to wait until the battery becomes
weak to recharge.
• Avoid leaving the handset without charging the battery for an
extended period of time so that the battery runs down
completely. This can shorten the battery’s life. If this happens,
recharge the battery. You may need to charge the battery several
times before it is recharged to its full capacity.
• When charging a battery pack which is completely discharged,
the CHARGE lamp may not light for a while (10 minutes or
more). There is nothing wrong with your telephone. Continue
charging.

replace it easily by snapping it

pTo determine the remaining battery power
Press the BATT CHECK button on the handset. The battery
indicator will give you the following information:
pBattery duration
A fully charged battery pack in the handset will last
approximately:
• 10 hours in continuous talk mode
• 30 days in RING ON mode
• 2 months in BATT SAVE mode

pIf the battery becomes weak during a phone
call
The handset will beep every three seconds (battery alarm).
“BATTERY LOW” and “PRESS MUTE” appear alternately on the
display. Within one minute, you must exchange the battery pack,
otherwise the call will be disconnected.
To exchange the battery during a phone call, see the “Exchanging
the battery during a phone call” section (page 19).
pIn case of a power interruption
The battery in the base unit, if fully charged, will provide backup
power to the base unit for approximately:
• 4 to 6 hours to remain in standby mode
• 2 to 3 hours to remain in the continuous talk mode
• 24 hours to maintain the data of the Caller ID list.
pWhen to replace the battery pack
• The battery can be recharged many, many times. However, if
the battery lasts only for a few minutes even after 10 hours of
charging, it needs replacement.
• To purchase a replacement battery, please visit your local Sony
authorized dealer or service centre.
Be sure to use only Sony BP-T40 battery.

an extended period of time, take
the battery out of the handset
and store it after charging for
over 10 hours.

If a power interruption lasts for
more than several days, or when
unplugging the base unit from
the AC outlet, remove the battery
pack from the base unit and store
it away.

Choosing tone or pulse dialing
For the telephone to work correctly, you must set it to the type of
your dialing system: tone or pulse dialing.

Setting the dial mode
Set the DIAL MODE switch to:
T (tone) if your dialing system is tone.
P (pulse) if your dialing system is pulse.
pIf you are not sure
1 Make a trial call with the DIAL MODE switch set to T.
2 If the call connects, leave the switch at T.
Otherwise, set the switch to P.
Using touch-tone services with pulse dialing systems
Some services require you to use touch-tone. This is not a problem if
your phone already uses tone dialing. If your phone uses pulse
dialing, however, you need to follow the steps below to use these
services.
For details on making calls, see the “Making calls” section (page 17).
1Dial the service’s number.
2When connected to the service, press TONE Z.
3Press the dialing keys as required.

Make a trial call before catching
the AC power adaptor cord on
the hook as described on page 9.

You only need to press TONE Z
once to turn dialing to tone; this
will remain in effect until the call
is disconnected.

Turning the ringer on or off
The RING ON/BATT SAVE switch on the handset turns the ringer
on or off.
If you do not want to be disturbed by telephone calls, you can turn
the switch off.
Move the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch to:
• RING ON to turn the ringer on.
or
• BATT SAVE to turn the ringer off to save battery power.
This is useful if you use the handset with another telephone
connected to the same line and you can hear the other telephone
ring.
In this setting, the handset will not ring, but you can still make or
receive calls by pressing TALK/DIAL.

1Insert the battery pack

“NO AREA CODE” appears on the display.
2Press PGM.
“<<PROGRAM>>” appears on the display.
3Press CALLER ID.
“AREA CODE???” appears on the display, and you hear a
confirmation beep.
4Enter three digits of your area code using the
dial keys.
5Press PGM.
Your hear a long confirmation beep.
pTo check the area code
1 Press PGM.
2 Press CALLER ID.
The area code appears on the display, and you hear a
confirmation beep.
3 Press PGM to finish.
pNotes on the area code
• When entering the area code, do not let more than 20 seconds
elapse between any two steps of the above procedure.
• Be sure to enter the area code correctly; otherwise the following
functions using the Caller ID service cannot be used.
– “Using memory match function with Caller ID”
(see page 25).
– “Calling back a number from the Caller ID list” (see page 29).
– “Storing a number into the speed dialing from the Caller ID
list” (see page 29).

“CONNECTING” flashes on the display, and then you
hear a dial tone.
The talk time appears on the display.
2Dial the phone number.
3When you finish talking, press OFF.

Receiving calls on the handset is easy: just press TALK/DIAL.
1When you hear the phone ring (at the same
time, “**RINGING**” appears on the display),
press TALK/DIAL.
The talk time appears on the display.
2When you finish talking, press OFF.
The talk time disappears from the display.

If reception is poor when you
press TALK/DIAL, you will hear
five short error beeps (“OUT OF
RANGE” will also appear on the
display). In this case, move closer
to the base unit to improve
reception.
!
If reception becomes poor during
conversation, you will hear a
beep (the out-of-range alarm)
every second. If this happens,
move closer to the base unit;
otherwise, the call will be
disconnected after 15 seconds.
Note, however, that you may not
hear beeps if it is noisy on the
handset.
!
The handset will not ring on an
incoming call (“**RINGING**”
will not appear on the display,
either) if the RING ON/BATT
SAVE switch is set to BATT
SAVE. However, you can receive
calls by pressing TALK/DIAL.

Redialing
If interference occurs on the handset
When you press TALK/DIAL, the handset automatically searches for
the channel with the best reception. However, if you notice
interference during a conversation, move closer to the base unit. If
interference persists, you can switch to another channel to improve
the sound quality of your telephone conversation.
During a conversation, press CHANNEL.
The phone will select a new channel.

You can redial the last number called with just one touch of the
REDIAL button.
1Press TALK/DIAL.
“CONNECTING” flashes on the display, and then you
hear a dial tone.
The talk time appears on the display.
2Press REDIAL.
The last sequence of numbers dialed will be automatically
redialed.
pTo erase the last phone number dialed
While the handset is not in use, press REDIAL twice.
The number is erased from memory, and you will hear a long
confirmation beep.

MUTE button
Putting a call on mute
The MUTE button allows you to temporarily suspend a phone
conversation without disconnecting the call. When a call is on mute,
you can hear the caller but the caller cannot hear you.
Press MUTE.
“==MUTE==” flashes on the display.
pTo resume the conversation
Press MUTE again (or TALK/DIAL).

Exchanging the battery during a phone call
If the battery becomes weak during a phone call, the handset will
beep every three seconds (battery alarm). “BATTERY LOW” and
“PRESS MUTE” appear alternately on the display. Within one
minute, you must exchange the battery pack to continue the
conversation, otherwise the call will be disconnected.
1Press MUTE to put the call on mute.
“CHANGE BATT.” appears on the display.
2Exchange the battery in the handset with a fully
charged one in the base unit.
The call remains connected even though the display
blanks when exchanging the batteries.
3Press TALK/DIAL to resume the conversation.

Be sure to proceed steps 1 to 3
within one minute.

Using “call waiting” service
If you have subscribed to “call waiting” service, you can switch to a
new call during conversation.
1When a new call comes in while you are talking,
press FLASH/CALL WAITING.
The current caller is put on hold and you can answer the
new call.
2When you want to switch back to the first caller,
press FLASH/CALL WAITING again.
Pressing FLASH/CALL WAITING lets you switch back
and forth between the two calls.

If you press FLASH/CALL

incoming call, the call will be
