Before you get started
l Turn off the power to all components before making any connections.
l Do not connect the AC power cord until all of the connections arecompleted.
l Be sureto make connections firmly to avoid hum and noise.
l When connecting an audio/video cord, be sure to match the color-coded pins to the appropriatejacks on
the components: yellow (video) to yellow; white (left, audio) to white; and red (right, audio) to red.
l When connecting optical digital cords, take the capsoff the connectors and insert the cord plugs straight
in until they click into place.
l Do not bend or tie the optical digital cord.

Notes on antenna hookups
l To prevent noise pickup, keep the AM loop
antennaaway from the receiver and other
components.
l Be sureto fully extend the FM wire antenna.
l After connecting the FM wire antenna,keep it

grounding the receiver.

Hooking Up the Component

Connect the digital output jacks of your DVD player and satellite tuner (etc.) to the receiver’s digital
input jacks to bring the multi channel surround sound of a movie theater into your home. To fully
enjoy multi channel surround sound, five speakers (two front speakers, two surround speakers, and a
center speaker) and a sub woofer are required. For 6.1 channel surround sound, you will also need a
surround back speaker. You can also connect an LD player with an RF OUT jack via an RF
demodulator, like the Sony MOD-RF1 (not supplied).

Note
You cannotconnectanLD player’s DOLBY DIGITAL RF OUT jack directly to this unit’s digital inputjacks.
You mustfirst converttheRF signalto eitheranoptical or coaxial digital signal.For details,see
“Troubleshooting” onpage82.
* Make eithercoaxial or optical connections.We recommendmaking coaxial connectionsinsteadof optical
connections.

Connect the digital output jacks of your MD or DAT deck to the receiver’s digital input jack and
connect the digital input jacks of your MD or DAT deck to the receiver’s digital output jack. These
connections allow you to make digital recordings of TV broadcasts, etc.

Although this receiverincorporatesamulti channeldecoder,it is alsoequippedwith multi channel
inputjacks. Theseconnectionsallow you to enjoy multi channelsoftwareencodedin formats other
thanDolby Digital andDTS. If your DVD playeris equippedwith multi channeloutputjacks, you
canconnectthemdirectly to thereceiverto enjoy thesoundof theDVD player’s multi channel
decoder.Alternatively, themulti channelinputjacks canbeusedto connectanexternalmulti channel
decoder.
To fully enjoy multi channelsurroundsound,five speakers(two front speakers,two surround

mode to “CD 2” and connect the changer to

If you connect other audio/video components to
the AC OUTLET(s) on the receiver, the
receiver will supply power to the connected
component(s), allowing you to turn the whole
system on or off when you turn the receiver on

* You canconnectanactive subwoofer to eitherof thetwoJacks.Theremainingjack canbeusedto connecta
secondactive subwoofer. As theactive subwoofer doesnot havethedirectivity, you canplaceit whereveryou
want.
- To connectcertainspeakersto anotherpoweramplifier, usethePREOUT jacks. Thesamesignalis outputfrom
boththeSPEAKERSjacks andthe PREOUT jacks. For example,if you wantto connectjust thefront speakers
to anotheramplifier, connectthatamplifier to thePREOUT FRONT L andRjacks.
7.1 channel speaker hookup
Connect the speakers as follows to enjoy 7.1 channel mode using real speakers for all 7.1 channels.
These connections require an additional power amplifier. Connect the additional power amplifier to
the PRE OUT SURR BACK terminals on this receiver. Then connect the surround back (L/R)
speakers to the additional amplifier. For details on the 7.1 channel mode, seepage 28

To enjoy multi channelsurround,connectfront,
center,surround,andsurroundbackspeakers
with anominal impedanceof 8 ohmsor higher,
andsettheIMPEDANCE SELECTOR to
“8W. Checkthe operatinginstructions
suppliedwith your speakersif you’re not sure
of their impedance. (This information is
usuallyprinted on alabel on thebackof the
speaker.)
You may connectapair of speakerswith a
nominal impedancebetween4 and8 ohmsto
all of thespeakerterminals.However, evenif
onespeakerwithin this rangeis connected,set
theIMPEDANCE SELECTOR to “467.
Note
Be sureto turn thepoweroff whensettingthe
IMPEDANCESELECTOR.

Onceyou havehookedup the speakersand
turnedon thepower, clearthereceiver’s
memory.Then specify the speakerparameters
(size,position, etc.) andperform anyother
initial setupoperationsnecessaryfor your
system.
Tip
To checktheaudiooutputduringsettings(tosetup
whileoutputtingthesound),checktheconnection
(seepage25).
Clearing the receiver’s
memory
Before usingyour receiverfor thefirst time, or
when you want to clearthereceiver’s memory,
do thefollowing.
1 Turn off the receiver.
2 Hold down I/C!l for 5 seconds.
“ENTER to ClearAll” appearsin the
display.
3 Press ENTER.
After “MEMORY CLEARING...” appears
in thedisplay for awhile, “MEMORY
CLEARED!” appears.All of thefollowing
items areresetor cleared:
l All presetstationsareresetor cleared.
l All soundfield parametersareresetto
their factory settings.
l All index names(of presetstationsand
programsources)arecleared.
l All SET UP parametersareresetto
their factory settings.
l The soundfield memorizedfor each
programsourceandpresetstationsare
cleared.
Performing initial setup
operations
Before usingyour receiverfor thefirst time,
adjustSET UP parameterssothatthereceiver
correspondto your system.For theadjustable
parameters,seethetableonpage90. Seepages
19-25 for speakersettingsandpages48-50 for
other settings.
For thebestpossiblesurroundsound,all
speakersshouldbethesamedistancefrom the
listening position (0).
However, thereceiverletsyou to placethe
centerspeakerup to 5 feet closer(@), the
surroundspeakersup to 15feet closer(@) and
the surroundbackspeakersup to 15feet closer
(0) to thelistening position.
The front speakerscanbeplacedfrom 3 to 40
feetfrom thelistening position (a).
You canplacethesurroundspeakerseither
behindyou or to the side,dependingon the
shapeof your room (etc.).

Tip
Whensettingup thesurroundbackspeaker,setthe
speakerat least3 feetbehindthelisteningposition. It
is recommendedto placethespeakeratanequal
distancefrom the surroundleft andright speakers.If
thereis nospacebehindthelistening position, setthe
speakerabovethelistening position by placing it on a
standor hangingit from theceiling. To prevent
speakerdamageor injury in casethespeakerfalls,
makesurethatit is properlyfixed in place.
Specifying the speaker
parameters
1 Press SET UP.
2 Press the cursor buttons (< or >) to
select the parameter you want to
adjust.
3 Turn the jog dial to select the setting
you want.
The setting is entered automatically.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have set
all of the parameters that follow.

the bassredirection circuitry and output the
front channel bassfrequencies from the sub
woofer.
l When the front speakersareset to “SMALL”,
the center, surround, and surround back
speakersarealso automatically setto
“SMALL” (unless previously setto “NO”).
