Identify Your TV Before Use
In this manual, the instructions are given using the model with
the maximum functions. Please disregard information in the
manual which does not apply to your TV.
Before you proceed, please check the model number of your
TV set.
This manual applies to several models and there are slight
differences among them. Please check the table below to
see what is equipped with your TV before you begin the
operation.

E Introducing the Sony XBR Series
With this TV, you can:
¢ Receive up to 125 cable channels for a total of 181 possible
off-air and cable channels with the multi-band
VHF/UHF/CATV tuner.
¢ Receive stereo programs and Second Audio Program
(SAP) broadcasts with the built-in Multichannel TV Sound
(MTS) decoder.
¢ Get superior VCR playback pictures through the S VIDEO
IN jack (when you connect a VCR with an S video output
jack).
¢ Watch the picture and sound of your VCR through the monitor
output jacks.
¢ Get hi-fi sound through the variable audio output jacks
(when you connect an audio system).
All of these features are usually provided on recent Sony TVs.
¢ Watch two or more channels at the same time (“‘picture-in-
picture’).
— Watch another channel or a VCR in a window picture.
— Store a TV picture and call it up. (digital memo)
— Scan other channels simultaneously and choose one of
them.
(Provided only for KV-27XBR55, 32XBR55, 32XBR75,
29XBR85)
¢ Get three-dimensional sound reproduction with the 3D
sound system (when you connect two main speakers and
one super woofer speaker).
¢ Get fine picture constantly with the Active Signal Correction
{ASC) system. The ASC system adjusts the signals and cor-
rects distorted signals for the entire picture on the screen.
Get natural sound with the Sound Retrieval System
(SRS®*)*.
This system is effective for both stereo and monaural
sound.
¢ Set up the TV and adjust the picture and the sound in the
on-screen menu. In the on-screen menu, you can set every-
thing with mainly three buttons, + /— and RETURN.
All of these are unique features of the XBR series.

automatically to produce more detail in both bright and dark
areas of every scene.

sharp black and white contrasts.

The Dynamic Focus™ circuitry automatically focuses the
scanning electron beam for enhanced sharpness over the
entire picture, especially in the corners.

© The Trinitone™ control allows you to adjust the color
temperature (tint) of the picture so that you can obtain the
best color.
«Sound Retrieval System (SRS®) reproduces the ambience
and dynamics of a live performance, creating the sense of
being present at the concert hail or recording studio. SRS
lets you enjoy optimum sound from anywhere in the room.

whether or not you are familiar with TV sets.

For models equipped with the panel (KV-27XBR55,
32XBR55, 32XBR75, 29XBR85), place the panel up or down. Mini Remote RM-KIT
The mini commander is supplied only to KV-27XBR51,
KV-32XBR51, KV-27XBR55, KV-32XBR55.

1. Unpack the TV

1 Carefully take the TV set out of the packing carton ac-
cording to the instructions on the outside of the carton.
Save the carton and packing materials for later transport.
Note
The supplied accessories are packed in the upper part of the
carton. Be sure not to dispose of them.
2 Place the TVina dry, cool place so that the ventilation
openings at the side of the unit are not blocked.
3 Plug the TV into an AC 120 volt power outlet.
Note on inserting the plug
One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the
purpose of safety and will fit into the power outlet only one
way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the
outlet, contact your dealer.
Safety Notes
Should any liquid or solid object fall into the cabinet, unplug
the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before
operating it any further.
For owners of the KV-29XBR85
The cover for rear panel is packed inside the TV stand.
1 When you unpack the TV, open the TV stand doors and
take the cover out from inside the stand.
2 when you have finished making all the connections (see
page 15 to 19 for connecting information), attach the
cover as illustrated below:
When you unpack the TV, take aff the shock absorbers.
Otherwise, you will not be able to use the swivel function.

1 Insert the projecting parts at the bottom of the super woof-
er into the receptacles on the top of the TV.
2 Connect the super woofer cord to the SUPER WOOFER
jack on the rear of the TV.
Notes on the speakers
¢ Do not carry the TV holding the main speakers.
¢ The low bass sound is output from the super woofer. Be careful not
to block the openings of the super woofer when installing the TV.
Otherwise, the low bass sound will not be fully reproduced.
¢ Be sure to use the supplied speakers, since the TV and the speakers
produce sounds as one unit.

If the Remote Commander does not operate properly, the
batteries might be exhausted. Replace both of them with
new ones.
© To avoid damage from possible battery leakage, remove the
batteries if you will not use the Remote Commander for a
long time.
Caution
On the lithium battery
© Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of children.
Should the battery be swallowed, immediately consult a doctor.
Be sure to observe the correct polarity when installing the battery.
© Do not hold the battery with metallic tweezers, otherwise a short-
circuit may occur.
¢ Replace the battery with a Sony CR2025 lithium battery.
Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.
WARNING
Battery may explode if mistreated. Do not recharge,
disassemble or dispose of it in fire.

1 Turn onthe TV.
2 Press the TV/VIDEO button on the TV or an input
select button on the Remote Commander so that the
“VIDEO’ 1’, “VIDEO 2” or “VIDEO3” indication appears
on the screen.
VIDEO 1: for equipment connected to VIDEO 1 IN
VIDEO 2: for equipment connected to VIDEO 2 IN
VIDEO 3: for equipment connected to VIDEO 3 IN
You can label each of these input modes. For details,
see page 48.
You need not to select mode when you use the direct
play function. For details, see page 50.
To view one TV program while recording another
Press the TV/VTR mode select button on the VCR or Remote Com-
mander so that the VCR will be in the TV mode. Press the TV button
on the Remote Commander, and select the channel! you want to view.

For operation, refer to the instruction manual furnished with
the VCR.
When you use an infrared remote control VCR, you can
operate the VCR with the supplied Remote Commander
regardless of it is Sony VCR or non-Sony VCR.
See “Using the Programmable Remote Commander” on
page 61.
To return to the TV mode
— Press the TV/VIDEO button on the TV so that a channel
number appears on the screen.
— Press the TV button on the Remote Commander.
When you cannot obtain a clear picture and/or sound
Make sure that the TWVTR mode select button on the VCR is set to
TV. Re-select the desired channel with the buttons on the TV or the
Remote Commander.

Leave the amplifier volume, bass and treble controls at their
mid position and adjust the level with the VOLUME buttons
on the TV or the VOL buttons on the Remote Commander.
When you do not want to hear the TV sound,
be sure to set the SPEAKER SW (switch) on the TV to OFF.
The sound from the TV's speakers will be cut off.

“AUTO PROGRAM” is displayed on the screen and receivable channels (other than
the channels already preset) will be preset in numerical sequence. The channels
previously preset remain in the unit's memory.
Whennomore channels can be found, the programming stops and the lowest numbered
channel is displayed.
