Antennas
Outdoor antenna grounding
If anoutdoor antennaor cable system is installed,

contact with suchpower lines or circuits.
WHEN INSTALLING AN OUTDOOR ANTENNA
SYSTEM, EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE

Getting Started
Step 1 : Unpacking
Check that you have received the following items with the VCR:
l Remote commander
l Size AA (R6) batteries
l 75-ohm coaxial cable with F-type connectors
Check your model name
The instructions in this manual are for the 3 models: SLV-N88, SLV-N77 and SLV-N55.
Check your model name by looking at the rear panel of your VCR.
SLV-N88 is the model usedfor illustration purposes. Any difference in operation is clearly
indicated in the text, for example, “SLV-N88 only.”

Step 2 : Setting up the remote commander

Insert two size AA (R6) batteries
by matching the + and- on the

Controlling other TVs with the remote commander
The remote commander is preprogramed to control non-Sony TVs. If your TV is
listed in the following table, setthe appropriate manufacturer’s code number.

Hold down I/&, and enter your TV’s code number using the number buttons.

Now you canusethe I/&, VOL +/-, CH +/-, and TV/VIDEO buttons to control your
TV. You can also usethe buttons marked with adot (0)to control a Sony TV. To
control the VCR, reset l TV / VIDEO to VIDEO.

* If you enter a new code number, the code number previously enteredwill be erased.
* If the TV usesadifferent remote control system from the one programed to work with the
VCR, you cannot control your TV with the remote commander.
- When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the codenumber may change. Set
the appropriate code number every time you replace the batteries.
* When you pressthe AUDIO MONITOR button, your TV’s menu may appearon the TV
screen. To exit the TV menu, pressthe MENU button on the TV remote commander or wait
until the menu disappearsautomatically.

Step 3 : Hookups
Selecting the best hookup option
There are many ways in which your VCR can be hooked up. To hook up your VCR
so that it works best for you, first scanthrough the table below. Then usethe
accompanying diagrams and procedures on the following pagesto setup your VCR.
If your TV hasaudio/video inputs, refer to page 11for audio/video (AN) hookup.
Then follow one of the hookups below. If your TV doesnot have AN inputs, do

After you have completed the connections, follow the instructions for setup.
After you have completed the setup, you are ready to useyour VCR. Procedures
differ depending on the hookup you used. For anoverview, refer to “Quick reference
to using the VCR’ on the back cover.
Before you get started
l Turn off the power to all equipment.
l Do not connect the AC power cords until all of the connections are completed. If
you connect the AC power cord before the connections arecompleted, you may not
be able to usethe Plug and Play function.
l Be sureyou make connections firmly. Loose connections may causepicture
distortion.
l If your TV doesnot match any of the examples provided, seeyour nearestSony
dealer or qualified technician.
Caution
Connections between the VCR’s VHF/UHF connector and the antennaterminals of the TV
receiver should be madeonly asshown in the following instructions. Failure to do somay
result in operation that violates the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission
regarding the useand operation of RF devices. Never connect the output of the VCR to an
antennaor make simultaneous (parallel) antennaand VCR connections at the antennaterminals
of your receiver.
Note to CATV system installer (in USA)
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer’s attention to Article 820- 40 of the
NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable
ground shall be connectedto the grounding system of the building, asclose to the point of cable
entry aspractical.

Audio/video (AN) hookup
If your TV hasaudio/video (A/V) input jacks, you will get abetter picture and sound
if you hook up your VCR using theseconnections. For a true “home theater”
experience, you should connect the audio outputs of your VCR or TV to your stereo
system. If your TV doesnot have A/V inputs, seethe following pagesfor antennaor
cable hookups.
If you are not planning to useyour VCR to record programs, you finished setting up
the VCR after you have made the connections shown on this page. If you want to
record regular or cable TV programs, complete theseconnections first, andthen go to
the following pagesfor antennaor cable hookups.

Step 5 : Setting the clock
Using the Auto Clock Set
feature
SomeTV and cable channels transmit time
signals with their broadcasts. Your VCR can
pick up this time signal to automatically set
the clock.
The Auto Clock Set feature works only if a
channel in your areais broadcasting a time
signal. If broadcastersin your areaare not
yet sending time signals, setthe time
manually (page 21).
Before you start.. .
l Turn on the VCR andthe TV When using
a cable box, turn it on.
l Setthe CH switch on the rear of the VCR
to 3 or 4, whichever channel is not used in
your area. If both areused, setthe switch
to either channel (page 60). If your TV is
connected to the VCR using AfV
connections, set the TV to video input.
l PressTV/VIDEO to display the VIDEO
indicator (or the VCR indicator for SLV-
N77 and SLV-N55) in the VCR’s display
window.

l The clock cannot be setautomatically if you do not receive a channel that carries a time
signal in your area. If so, setthe clock manually (page 21).
