Introduction
This guide provides instructions for replacing a transporter in the Spectra
T200, T380, or T680 library (referred to as “the library”).
Notes: Depending on the ASM service level you purchased, the
transporter may not be included in your on-site ASM kit.
The transporter may vary from what appears in this guide.
The transporter moves the media within the library. It is mounted on the
vertical axis (VAX) and moves horizontally on the horizontal axis (HAX).
The transporter holds the TeraPack magazine as the transporter moves it
from one location to another. The cartridge picking mechanism, which is
part of the transporter, selects an individual cartridge from the magazine
and inserts it into a tape drive or removes the cartridge from a tape drive
and inserts it into a magazine slot. It can also move a cartridge from one
magazine slot to another.
Important
Do not replace the transporter unless you have been specifically instructed to do so
by Spectra Logic Technical Support.

Prepare for Maintenance
For all of the libraries, make sure that you address the requirements in this
chapter to prepare for the maintenance procedure.
ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE
Replacing the transporter requires 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether
the right-hand side of the library is accessible. This time estimate includes
the time required to initialize and test the transporter after the installation
is complete.
ENSURE ESD PROTECTION
The repair environment for the library must be free of conditions that
could cause electrostatic discharge (ESD). To protect the library from ESD,
follow these procedures when repairing or testing the library:
Place a static protection mat on the work surface used while removing
and installing library components. Use a 1-megohm resistor to ground
the static protection mat.
Wear a static protection wrist band whenever you handle library
components that have been removed from their antistatic bags. Connect
this wrist band to the static protection mat or to other suitable ESD
grounding.
Keep all components in anti-static bags when not in use.

T200, T380, or T680
Transporter Replacement
This chapter describes replacing the transporter in a Spectra T200, T380, or
T680 library.
Note: The relative locations of the components and the procedures are
the same for all three libraries unless otherwise indicated.
Power Off the Library
Powering off the library is required if you are accessing the transporter
from the front of the library. If you are accessing the transporter from the
right side of the library, powering off the library is optional, but highly
recommended. If you do not power off the library, you must remove the
library front panel to turn off the 24 VAC power to the transporter (see
Remove the Front Panel on page 10).
WARNING
Hazardous moving parts. Turn off the power to the library and disconnect the
power cords if you do not plan to remove the front panel.
WARNUNG Gefahren durch bewegliche Teile. Schalten Sie das Gerät in die

Use the following steps to power off the library.
1. Power off the library from the front panel.
Note: Refer to the Spectra Mid-Range Libraries T200, T380, and T680 User
Guide for instructions if the BlueScale Soft Power option is
enabled.
a. Press the front panel power button for approximately six seconds or
until the button’s LED starts flashing.
b. Wait for the power-off sequence to complete. It takes from one
minute to five minutes (depending on the library) while the library
allows the BlueScale software to shut down gracefully.
2. Set the main power switches on the library back panel to the off
position and disconnect the AC power cords.
Notes: If you have redundant power supplies installed, make sure
you turn off both power switches.
If you have cable locks installed on the power cords, it is
easier to disconnect the cords from the AC outlets at the wall.

ACCESS THE TRANSPORTER
The procedure for accessing the transporter depends on how the library is
installed.
Access through the front panel—If the library’s right side panel is
inaccessible, you must perform the replacement procedure through the
front of the library. See Access the Transporter from the Front,
beginning on this page, for instructions. This is the most common
method of access.
Access through the right side panel—If you have access to the library’s
right side panel, you can perform the replacement procedure by
removing the access panels, as described in Access the Transporter
from the Right Side on page 15. This access method simplifies the
replacement procedure.
Access the Transporter from the Front
If you cannot access the right side of the library, use the instructions in the
following sections to remove the front panel, fan assembly, and shelves.
Remove the Front Panel
1. From the front of the library, pull firmly outward on the top edge of the
filter cover panel to release the magnetic latches and tip the cover out
from the front panel.
2. Lift the cover upward to disengage the tabs on each side of the cover
from the slots in the front of the library. Set the cover aside.

the rack.
Notes: The following steps are for the T680 library; the instructions
for your rack may be different.
If your rack does not provide full access to the right side of
the library without blocking the top and bottom of the
chassis, you must access the transporter from the front of the
library (see Access the Transporter from the Front on
page 10).
a. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws securing the
right-hand access panel to the side of the rack.
b. Remove the panel and set it and the screws aside.
WARNING
Hazardous moving parts. Turn off the power to the library and disconnect the
power cords if you do not plan to remove the front panel.
WARNUNG Gefahren durch bewegliche Teile. Schalten Sie das Gerät in die
