1.1 WelcometotheSCS.1d!
ThankyouforpurchasingSCS.1d!TheSCS.1d(StantonControlSystem1deck)isthepremierdeckcontrolsurface
forlaptopDJs,remixers,VJs,andproducers.
Beforewebegin,thereareafewimportantissueswewouldliketobringtoyourattention.
Thereisasoftwarecomponenttothishardware.ItiscalledDaRouter.DaRouterisakindof“MIDIprocessor”that
allowstheuseofpresets.Thesepresetscanbeapplicationspecificmappings,orgenericmapsthatcanbeapplied
toanumberofdifferentsoftwarepackages.Infact,youmayalreadybefamiliarwiththeDaRoutersoftware
becauseitisalsousedwithourSCS.3lineofcontrollers.Well,DaRouterisevenmoreimportantforthe
SCS.1controllersthanitisfortheSCS.3controllers.ThisisbecausetheDaRoutersoftwarefortheSCS.1controllers
alsocontainsthedriverforthem.Soitisimportantforyoutogotohttp://www.enterthesystem.com/scs1to
downloadandinstallthelatestDaRoutersoftware.Thissinglesoftwarepackagegivesyouthelatestpresetsand
thelatestversionofyourdriver.BesuretokeepyourDaRoutersoftwareupdatedsoyoucantakeadvantageof
newpresetsandfeaturesastheybecomeavailable!
Thisbringsustothenextimportantissue.PleasedonotconnecttheSCS.1hardwaretoyourcomputerbeforeyou
gothroughthedriverinstall.Mostaudiointerfaceinstallers,FireWireorUSB,carrythesamewarning.Weknow
thatwhenyoubuynewgear,mostpeopleareexcitedtohookitallupandseewhatitcando,butinthiscase,itis
bettertowaituntilyouareprompted.Theprocesswillgolikethis…
•YoushouldconnectthepowertoyourSCS.1dandlocatetheFireWireconnector,butdonotconnectitto
thecomputeryet.
•DownloadandruntheDaRouterinstallerfortheSCS.1d.Thisinstallerislocatedat
www.enterthesystem.com/scs1
•OnWindowsadialogboxwillopentellingyoutoconnectandpowerupyourSCS.1d.Atthispoint,connect
theFireWirecabletoyourcomputer.OnaMaccomputeryouwilljustneedtoinstallDaRouterfirst,
howevernodialogwillshowforconnectingtheunits.
ThedriverwillthendetecttheSCS.1devicesconnectedtoyourcomputerandloadthedriversforthem.Allowthe
installertocontinuenormally.Followingthesestepsisagoodideaforanyhardwareinstallationyouhave,and
mightsaveyoufrompossiblyhavingtotroubleshootaproblemlater.
Finally,wewouldliketopointoutthatthedescriptionsofspecificfunctionalityoftheSCS.1daregeneric.
TheSCS.1disaMIDIcontrolleranddoesnotgenerateanyaudioitself.AlthoughitlookslikeaCDplayeror
turntable,itinfactisnot.ThefunctionalityofagivencontrolonthesurfaceoftheSCS.1d(likethepitchsliderfor
example)isdependentonwhatitisassignedto.Wehadtostartsomewhere,sowethoughtitwouldbebestto
describethefunctionalityofthegenericpreset.Whenyouareusingotherpresets,youcanclickonthePreset
DocumentationbuttoninDaRouter(it’sthe“?”button)tolearnallabouthowthatspecificpresetworkswithyour
newSCS.1d.

connectdirectlyfromtheSCS.1dtoyourcomputer.
MostPCswillhavea4pinFireWireport.Soifyouhavea4pinportonyourcomputer,connecttheFireWirecable
totheprovided4to6pinadapter,andthenjustplugittoyourcomputer’s4pinFireWireport.
NowthatpowerandFireWireareconnected,wecanexplorehookinguptheSCS.1dwiththeSCS.1m(ifused).

Thismixer‐and‐deckconfigurationcanbeusedtoemulateadual‐decksetupbyusing
virtualdecksforcontrollingtransport,loop,andeffects,whileusingthemixertoblend
andEQsongsandsounds.Thissystemistheperfectentryintotheworldof
professionalSCSystemlaptopmixing.(Figure2.7)

Thissetuprecreatesthe“traditional”DJsystem,allowinguserstohavetwophysical
decks,eachrepresentinganon‐screendeck(whichcaneasilybetoggledtofourdecks
byusingvirtualdecks).Themixerisusedforblending,channelEQ,etc,inatraditional
manner.ThissetupistailoredtowardsprofessionalDJswantingtoreplacetheir
existingsetupwithanSCSystemcontroller‐basedsolution.(Figure2.8)

Inthischapter,wewillbrieflydescribethetoppaneloftheSCS.1d.
It’simportanttounderstandthattheSCS.1disatraditionalDJturntable/CDplayer“analogy”inacontrolsurface.
ThismeansthatwhiletheSCS.1dlookslikeaDJturntable/CDplayer,atitscore,itisreallyacontrolsurfacethat
sendsandreceivescontroldatatoandfromacomputer.Asacontrolsurface,theSCS.1d’sfunctionalityis
completelyderivedfromthehostapplication(software)thatitiscontrolling.
TheSCS.1dalsoutilizespresetsinDaRoutertodefineitscapabilities,whichcandrasticallychangeitsfunctionality
dependingonhowthepresetisconfigured.Soaswediscussthepanelandlayoutitisimportanttorememberthat
whenrunningaspecificpresetitsbesttoreadthedocumentationassociatedwiththatpresetasitwillexplainhow
theSCS.1distailoredtowardstheapplicationitisbeingusedwith.Sointhebelowexplanationswedescribethe
controlsandhowtheytraditionallymaybemappedintoanapplication.

3.2 EncoderSection
Thissectionconsistsoffourrotarypushencoders,eachwith
anLEDencoderringtoindicatethevalueoftheencoder,
andanLCD“scribblestrip”thatcanbeusedtoindicatethe
functionalityofeachencoder.Encodersareusedtocontrol
variableparameterssuchaseffectlevels.Encodersdonot
physicallystopwhenyouturnthem;insteadtheLED
encoderringsindicatethepositionofthecontrolyouare
adjusting.
3.3 TriggerSection
Thetriggersectionconsistsoffourvelocitysensitivepads,
fourLCD“scribblestrips”,andsevenclickingswitches.Each
pad,switchandscreenisbacklitbymulticolor(red,green,
orange)LED’s.Thevelocitysensitivepadsandswitchesare
typicallyassignedtotriggeractionssuchaplayingcue
points,movingloopsorkillingfrequencies.TheLCD
“scribblestrips”willdisplayfunctionalityandstatus
dependingonthepreset.

3.4 Platter/GlobalSection
Thissectioncontrolstheassignmentoftheplatteraswell
asglobalfunctionality.
TheDECKSELECTbuttonwillallowyoutogglevirtualdecks
onscreen.Inthiswaywhenyouswitchvirtualdecks,the
SCS.1dwillalsochangeitsstatetomatchtheonscreen
deck.ByusingonephysicalSCS.1dyoucancontrol
multiplevirtualdecks.
TheVINYL,CONTROLandBROWSEbuttonsallmodifythe
motorizedjogwheel’sfunctionalitywithintheapplication.
Themotorizedplatterisnormallyusedforscratchingand
scrubbingthroughasongwhen“VINYL”isactivated.
However,theControlbuttonallowstheplattertobefreely
usedasalargeparametercontrolsuchasscratchingan
effect.BROWSEisusedtoscrolltheplaylistsin
applicationsthatsupportmappingtobrowserview.
DependingonthecontrolmodetheENTERandCANCELbuttonswillallowforexpandedfunctionalitywiththe
platter.
SETUPbuttonwillallowforadjustmentsoftheoveralldeckcontroller.Uponpressingsetupyouwillseethe
currentfirmwareversion.Usingthefirstencoderwillallowyoutoselectavaluetochange;thesecondencoder
willallowyoutoadjustthevalue.
‐Contrast:AdjuststhecontrastoftheLCDscreens.
‐Torque:Adjuststhetorqueoftheplattertosimulatedifferentturntables.
‐MIDICh:ChangestheoutputMIDIchannelofthedevice.ItissuggestedNOTtochangethisas
presetsusuallyexpectthedecktosenddatafromthedefaultMIDIchannel.
‐Decay:Adjuststheaccelerationcurveoftheencoders.

3.5 PitchSection
Thepitchsectionrepresentsatraditionalpitchcontrol
foundonaCDplayerorturntable.However,thekey
differenceisthatthepitchcontrolismotorizedtosupport
functionalitysuchasauto‐syncinanapplicationand
updatingpositionwhenswitchingvirtualdecks.It’s
importanttonotstopthemotorizedfaderwhileit’smoving
topreventdamage.
TheRESETbuttonwillcenterthepitchsliderto0%
automatically.
TheRANGEbuttonwillchangethesensitivityofthepitch
slider(aslongastheapplicationsupportstheranges).
3.6 TransportSection
Thetransportsectionisanalogoustothetransportcontrols
onaCDplayerhoweveritplacesafewextrabuttonsfor
commonfunctionsfoundinDJapplications(suchasauto
sync).Eachofthe4maintransportbuttonsaremulticolor
backlittoindicatestatus.
Alongwiththe4maintransportbuttonsareseekforward
andbackwardsaswellasscanforwardandbackwards.
Abovetheseekandscanbuttonsisafreelyassignable
backlitbutton.

3.7 PresetSwitcherSection
Thepresetswitchersectioncontrolsswitchingofpresetson
theSCS.1d.Presetsaregenerallyrelatedtowardsswitching
presetsfortheencodersection,triggersectionorpitch
slider.Presetsaregroupsofcontrolswithfunctionality
focusedtowardsdoingasingletask.Forinstance,aloop
presetwillcontainallthecontrolsneededtocreate,move
andmodifyaloop.Presetconfigurationandfunctionality
arehighlydependentontheapplicationtheSCS.1disbeing
usedwith.Aswiththerestofthecontrolsit’svery
importanttoreadthepresetdocumentationfromwithin
DaRouterforinformationonhowtheunitisconfigured.

4. SCS.1SoftwareInstallation
BeforeinstallingtheSCS1software(DaRouteranddrivers)makesureyoufollowtheseguidelines:
1) Windows:DoNOTconnecttheSCS.1controller(s)untilpromptedbythedriverinstaller.
2) Windows:WhenintendingtousemultipleSCS.1controllersatonce(mixer+decks)makesureyou
connectALLthedevicesduringthedriverinstaller.
3) AlwayschecktheStantonwebsite(listedbelow)forthelatestdriversandfirmware.
TofullymaximizeSCS.1capabilitiesandtakeadvantageofitsgreatfeatures,somesoftwareneedstobeinstalled
withit.Infact,theSCS.1SoftwareInstallationprocessdiffersgreatlybetweenMacandPCcomputers.
‐OnaMac,theSCS.1disaclasscompliantFireWiredevice,whichmeansthatitwillconnecttothesystem
withoutdrivers,however,becausetheSCS.1dusesaproprietaryhighspeedMIDIsystemitisnecessaryto
installDaRoutertocommunicatewiththeSCS.1dandcreateavirtualMIDIportforthehostapplicationto
receiveMIDImessagesthrough.OntheMacyouwillsimplyneedtoinstallDaRouter,connecttheunit(s)
andstartusingyourdesiredpreset.
‐InWindows,ahighlevelFireWiredrivermustbeinstalledtocommunicatewiththeSCS.1d.Oncethisdriver
isinstalledtheSCS.1dandcancommunicatewithDaRouter.UponinstallingDaRouter,boththeFireWire
andvirtualMIDIportdriverareinstalled.ItisimportanttonotconnecttheSCS.1duntilprompted.Itisalso
importanttoconnectallunitsthatwillbeusedwheninstallingthedriver(ifusingmultipleSCS.1d’sorwitha
SCS.1m).
Ineithercase,(MacorPC)theDaRoutersoftwareneedstobeinstalled.Thissoftwareactsasanintermediary
betweenyourSCS.1controllersandyourperformancesoftware,interceptingandprocessingMIDImessages
beforesendingthemouttoyourapplicationofchoice.Thisprocesstakeslessthanamillisecond,andgivesyou
someamazingpower.NotonlydoesitallowyoutoquicklychangetheMIDIoutputoftheSCS.1controllers
(byswitchingpresets),italsoallowsforlogic‐basedprogrammingthatyourperformancesoftwaremayormaynot
becapableofperforming.Thismeansthatitisactuallypossibletoaddorchangesomefunctionalityinyour
softwareofchoice.ThiscanbeassimpleasaddingMIDIdatatoanapplicationthatdoesnotnormallysupportit,
tototallychangingthebehaviorofagivencontrol.
Inshort,ifyouareaPCuser,youwillrunoneinstallerthatwillinstalltheSCS.1driverandDaRouter.Ifyouarea
Macuser,youdonotneedtoinstallanydriverbutyoumustinstallDaRouter.
BeforewalkingthroughspecificinstallationproceduresforMacandPC,youwillneedtodownloadthelatest
versionofDaRouterfromtheStantonwebsite:
