REFERENCE
For basic operation please follow the guidelines below. The SL-1100includes fourdemonstration
presets which may beused afterthe instrument isinstalled intoyourMIDI system.
1)Connect voltage adapter into a power outlet (make sure voltage specification on power
adapter matches your line voltage). Connect adapter cable to SL-1100power jack.
2) Connect MIDI cables before switching on any MIDI devices. Touse the demonstration
presets, connect a sound module to either ofthe two MIDI outputs. Thesound module must be
multi-timbral and capable ofresponding to MIDI data on channels one through four.
4)Apply power to the SL-1100,then apply power to allother MIDI devicesinthe system.
To change SL-1100presets, make sure that the unit isin Perform Mode (there should be no
blinking lights on the front panel).Tochange the preset, press any ofthe four PRESET switches.
There are 8 banks offourpresets; to change to a different bank, pressthe left or right arrow
switches until the desired bank number isdisplayed.
The Master Volume Slider will adjustthe volume on all active zones. Unless programmed
otherwise, the optional pedal controller will alsoadjust the master volume. The left and right
wheels will control pitch and modulation, unless they have been disabled by the active Studio-
1100preset.
MIDI channels may be switched onand offusing the four ZONE switches.
Toedit a preset, enter Edit Mode by pressing and holding one ofthe fourZONE switches.
Press the FUNCTION switch which islabeled with the desired parameter. Release both switches
(the ZONE switch will blink). Pressing any FUNCTION switchrepeatedly will cyclethrough the
three parameters available on the switch. Change the current value with the CSL/DATAslider.
Press the blinking ZONE switch to exitEdit Mode.
DEMONSTRATION
PRESETS
The SL-1100comesfrom the factory with four demonstration presets in locations 11through 14.
The demonstration presets are intended for use with a multi-timbral sound module. Themodule
must beable to respond to MIDI data on channels one through four.

The demonstration presets illustrateseveral ofthe most usefulSL-1100functions,and are
summarized below. When the demonstration presets are selected with the PRESET switches, the
sound modules should change programs automatically. The actual program number oneach
sound module may not match the number ofthe preset selected onthe SL-1100.These program
numbersmay be easily changed; see the operation guide sections on Edit Mode and the
PROGRAM function.
DEMONSTRATIONPRESET 11:This isaverybasic presetwith one zone (MIDI channel 1)active
across the entire keyboard. TheMaster Volume control may beused to adjust the levelofthe
sound.
DEMONSTRATION PRESET 12:MIDI output channels onethrough fourare activeand receiving
note information from the keyboard. The ZONE switches may be used to turnoff selected
channels to hear different combinations ofthe sounds. The Master Volume slideron the front
panel may be used to adjust the volume levelofall channels simultaneously.
DEMONSTRATION PRESET 13:All four MIDI channels are active, but the keyboard isdivided
into fourzones, with a different channel activeineach zone (refer to the ZONE function for
moreinformation).

DEMONSTRATION PRESET 14:This preset demonstrates a velocity cross-fade. For notes
played softly on the keyboard, only MIDI channel 1 should play at maximum volume. Asthe
notes are struck more forcefully, thissound willbecomesofter, and the sound onMIDI channel
2will become louder.

BASICINFORMATION
The SL-1100serves asthe master controller for any group ofMIDI instruments and accessories.
AMIDI input isprovided which allowsflexibility inmulti-keyboard setups. Data from thisinput
ismerged into the two MIDI outputs. ' ' . .
Four programmable keyboard zones provided fast and easycontrol overessential functions. A
large three digitLED displays the current preset aswell asparameter data. All programmable
parameters may be accessed quickly via the fourZONE switches and the fourFUNCTION
switches.
TheSL-1100will command upto sixteen different MIDI channels, with keyboard control offour
different channels simultaneously. The two parallel MIDI outputs are a convenient way to hook
up several MIDI devices without the use ofMIDI splitters orrouters.

The thirty-two SL-11-00internal presets may be loaded from an external computer or storage
device. The output ofthe storage devicemust be connected to the MIDI input ofthe SL-1100.If
the SL-1100receives the correct system-exclusive identifier, the preset data will be loaded into
memory. If the identifier doesnot match, the system-exclusive data will bepassedto the SL-
1100outputs.
MIDI OUTPUTS: Connect sound modules and other MIDI devicesto either ofthe two parallel
MIDI outputs (the data isidentical onboth outputs). Toconnect more than two devices, use the
MIDI through on each device to connect to the MIDI input ofanother device. The SL-1100will
access upto sixteen separate MIDI channels under preset control. Sound modules with the
same channel settingswillbetreated asa single sound source by the SL-1100.
The thirty-two internal presets may be saved to an external computer or storage device. The
MIDI output ofthe SL-1100must be connected to the MIDI input ofthe storagedevice.Consult
the section on Program Save and Load for additional information. ;.
CONTROL VOLTAGE INPUTS: One input is provided for an external analog controller. An
optional control pedal isavailable from your dealer, or any DC control voltage source may be
used. The input voltage range is0 to 5 volts DC, which corresponds to a MIDI control range of0
to 7Fhex. The control pedal ismost commonly used tocontrolmaster volume,but itmay be
programmed toissueany MIDI control change message,i
MIDISYSTEM
CONFIGURATION
The illustration showsa typical MIDI setup for liveperformance. The SL-1100isdriving three
sound modules. In this example, Sound Module 1 ismulti-umbral, and will respond to MIDI
messages onchannels one through 8.
Sound Module 2 istwo-part multi-timbral, and isset to respond to MIDI channels nine and ten.
Sound module 3 isnot multi-timbral,and isprogrammed to receive onMIDI channel 11.With
this setup, every channel ofthe sound modules may be accessedindependently by the SL-1100
(there are no overlapping MIDI channels).

ZONES
TheSL-1100isdesignedwith four independent keyboardzones.Each zoneisintendedtocontrola
different sound by transmitting messagesona unique MIDI channel. Each zonemaybeactiveover
theentirekeyboard, orlimitedto any desiredsetof(adjacent) keys.'Thediagram belowshowsan
exampleofhow different soundsin onepreset might be "mapped"acrossthe keyboard.
Noticethatthe relationshipbetweenzonenumberandMIDI channel numberisarbitrary;thechannel
associatedwith each zonemaybedifferent ineach SL-1100preset.Tosimplifythe creationofpresets
itmay behelpful touseconsistentMIDIchannelsnumbers for thezonesallpresets.
OPERATION
TheSL-1100has'two modesofoperation,Perform Mode and Edit Mode, Someofthe switchesand
slidershave differentfunctions depending onthe mode (referto the front panel illustration).
PERFORM
MODE
During live performance or recording sessions,the SL-1100willusually be in Perform Mode. In
this mode, the four upper left switches (PRESET / FUNCTION) are used to selectone ofthe
thirty two presets. Press any ofthese switches to change the current preset. There are 8 banks
offourpresets; to change to a different bank, presstheleft orright arrow switches(PRESET)
until the desired bank number isdisplayed.
The four ZONE switches are used to enable or disable certain sounds. For example, a piano
sound may be active on Zone 1 during part ofa musical performance. At some point during the
song,the Piano sound isswitched off, and a soloinstrument sound isswitched on using Zone
switch 2. The same result could be achieved by switching to a different SL-1100preset, but itis
more efficient to use the zone switchesfor basic sound switching.
Theleft control slider on the front panel acts asa general purpose controller when the unit isin
Perform Mode.TheMIDI controller number for the sliderisstored aspart ofthe preset data.

EDIT
MODE
Tocreate or change a SL-1100preset, itisnecessary to enter Edit Mode. Mostofthe parameters
in the preset are associated with one ofthe four keyboard zones. Theprocedure for changing .
any ofthese zone parameters isasfollows:
1)Enter Edit Mode by pressing and holding one ofthe four ZONE switches.
2)Press the FUNCTION switch which islabeled with the desired parameter.
3)Release both switches. The ZONE switch will blink to indicate that itsparameters are
-editable.Pressing any FUNCTION switchrepeatedly will cyclethrough the three parameters
available on the switch. ^
4)Change the current value with the CSL/DATA slider.
5)Press the blinking ZONE switch to exitEdit Mode.
There isno Store function on the SL-1100;any parameter that was changed in Edit Mode is
automatically updated in internal memory. Note that the Zone switches must bein the desired
state before entering edit mode. Theseare the settings that will bestoredinto the presetupon
returning to Perform Mode. To change the stored Zone switch settings for a preset, setthe
Zones asdesired, and enter Edit Mode using any combination ofa Zone switch and a Function
switch. Press the blinking switch to exit Edit Mode, and the new Zone settings will be saved.
ZONE
FUIMCTIOMES
Each keyboard zone on the SL-1100has severalparameters which must besetto accessthe
desired sound from the sound module. The following sectionsdescribe the purpose ofeach.

LOWKEY
HIGHKEY
These functions are used to setthe range ofactivekeys for the zone. Tosetthe lowestactive
key, press and hold the desiredZONE switch. Press the FUNCTION 1 switch, then release both
switches. The Zone switch will blink, and the LED display indicates the lowestactive key. Use
the DATA slider to seta new value. Toset the highest active key, press FUNCTION switch 1
again. The LED display now willindicate the highest active key which may be changed with the
DATAslider.Pressthe blinking switch to exitthe edit mode.
For convenience, an alternate programming method isavailable which isfaster than setting the
key limits with the slider. First press and hold the ZONE switch to be edited. Press the
FUNCTION 1 switch. Release both switches. The ZONE switch will now blink, and the LED
will display the lowestactive key. Play two keys on the keyboard (theorder doesnot matter) to
program the new lowand high keys. The Edit mode willterminate automatically.
PROGRAM
The Program function isused to issue a MIDI program change command at the instant a SL-1100
preset isselected. The Program number issetindependently for each ofthe four keyboard
zones. To setthe MIDI program, press and hold the desired ZONE switch, and press the
FUNCTION 2 switch. Release both switches. The ZONE switch will blink. The display will
indicate the MIDI program ( 1 through 128).Change the setting with the DATA slider (the
program change commands will be issued asthe slider ismoved). Ifno program change is
desired selectthe dash (-).Press either blinking switch to exitthe edit mode.
For convenience a special Program Change function isavailable from Perform Mode. Pressand
hold a ZONE switch, then simply enter the program number (1through 128)on the labeled
black keys (the digitswill appear on the display asthey are entered). When the ZONE switch is
released, the entered program number will be issued on the channel corresponding to the zone.
The current MIDI Bank number may be selected in a similar fashion. Press and hold a ZONE
switch, then momentarily press the black BANK key. Enter the desired bank on the numbered
black keys. A Bank Selectmessage will beissued when the ZONE switch isreleased.

VOLUME
When multiple instruments are played simultaneously from the keyboard ("layered"), itis
essential to balance the relative volumes ofeach sound. The VOLUME function specifies an
initial volume levelfor eachofthe four keyboard zones.
Tosetthe volume, pressand hold the desiredZONE switch.Pressthe FUNCTION 3 switch, then
release both switches.The ZONE switch'will blink. Use the DATA slider to adjust the value as
indicated onthe LED display. If no initial volume message isdesired, adjust the slider until a
dash (-)appears onthedisplay.Pressthe blinking switchtoexiteditmode.
The overall volume levelfor all four zones asa group may beadjusted with the Master Volume
slider. This sliderislinked with the fourinitial volume settings for each zone, sothat asthe
master volume ischanged therelativevolume among the four zonesismaintained.
TRANSPOSE
It isoften desirable to shift the pitch ofa sound my someinterval up or down. Thisisespecially
useful in layered presets. Tosetthe transpose interval, pressand hold the desired ZONE switch,
and press the FUNCTION 4 switch. Release both switches. The display will indicate the current
value in semitones (the total transpose range isplus and minus two octaves).Adjust the value
with the DATA slider.Pressthe blinking switch to exitedit mode.
CHANNEL
Each keyboard zone can beprogrammed totransmit onany oneofthe sixteenMIDI channels.
Tosetthe channel, press and hold the desired ZONE switch, and press the FUNCTION 2 switch
twice. Release both switches. The Zone switch willblink. The display will now indicate the
MIDI CHANNEL for the zone, which may be changed with the slider.Pressthe blinking switch
to exit the edit mode. -
VELOCITY
Most sound modules can produce a wide range ofinstrument sounds, and each sound requires
an appropriate keyboard playing technique. The Velocity parameter ofthe SL-1100isusedto
adjust the keyboard dynamic sensitivity for the best response or"feel" for a given instrument
sound. Toadjust the keyboard velocity sensitivity, press and hold the desired ZONE switch.
Press the FUNCTION 3 switch twice, then release both switches. The ZONE switchwillblink.
Use the DATA slider to adjust the velocity sensitivity from -5through 5 (select3 for normal
positive velocity). Press the blinking switch to exitedit mode.
Thechart below indicates the relationship between keyboard playing force and MIDI velocity
values for various settings ofthe Velocity parameter.
Thechart shows that for a settingofzero,any keythat isdepressed willissuea MIDI velocity
value of64,regardless ofthe actual key velocity.Asthe parameter ismoved toward larger
positive values, the range ofMIDI velocities isincreased. At a setting ofpositive 3,all MIDI
output values may be transmitted depending onactual key velocity. At the maximum parameter
value ofpositive 5,itisvery easy to issueMIDI note-on velocities anywhere between 1 and 127.
The negative settings for this parameter may be used to create special "cross-fade" effects.
Create a presetwith two activezones, and setone zone for a negative velocity sensitivity. As the
keys are played with increasing force, the sound from the first zone will decreasein intensity,
while the sound from the second zone willincrease (Demonstration Preset 4 isconfigured for a
velocitycross-fade).

CSL
ControlSlider
The left slider on the SL-1100front panel can be programmed to issue any MIDI control change
message. Tosetthe controller number, press and hold a ZONE switch. Press the FUNCTION 4
switch twice, then release both switches. Use the DATA slider to setthe controller number (ifno
controllerisdesired,adjust theslidertodisplaya dash"-").Toeateditmode,presstheblinkingswitch.'
WHEELS
Thetwo control wheels on the Studio-1100are dedicated to PITCH and MOD functions. The
wheels may be switched on and off foreach zone (both will be enabled or both will be disabled
per zone). First press and hold the specific ZONE switch. Press the FUNCTION 2 switch three
times, then release both switches. The LED display will indicate On or OFF.Use the DATA
sliderto change the setting.Toexitthe edit mode, press the blinking switch.'
AFTERTOUCH
The SL-1100will transmit aftertouch, which allows expressive musical control during the course
ofa note. The aftertouch value isdetermined by thetotalkey pressureonalldepressedkeys
("channel pressure"). .
To enableor disable the aftertouch, press and hold a desired zone switch. Press the
FUNCTION 3 switch three times. Adjust the data sliderto change the display toON orOFF.
Press the blinking switch to exit edit mode.
Note: Not all sound modules respond to MIDI aftertouch (channel pressure) messages.
PEDAL
The SL-1100isequipped with a voltageinput for externalanalogcontrollerssuchasa voltagepedal
(available fromyourMaster Controller Keyboard dealer). Thepedal input issettoadjustthe master
volume (sameasfront panel slider)but may bereprogrammed toissueany MIDI controlchange
message.
Tosetthe controller number, pressand hold a ZONE switch. Press FUNCTION 4 switch3 times.
Release both switches. Use the DATA sliderto setthe controller number (ifno controller is
desired, adjust the slider to display a dash "-").Toexitedit mode, press the blinking ZONE
switch. The default setting for this input iscontroller #7. This value isnot issued directly as the
input changes, but isscaled by the initial volume setting forthe zone. All other controller-
numbers willcoverthe range from 0 to127asthe pedal ismoved.
TheSustaininput ontheSL-1100back panel may beused with an external footswitch. A MIDI
controlchange message (#64)willbeissuedon eachzone when the footswitch isactuated. To
enable or disable the sustain messages, press and hold a desired zone switch. Press and hold
the sustain pedal, and then press the Function 4 switch 3 times. Adjust the data slidertochange
the display to ON or OFF. Press the blinking zone switch to exit edit mode.

MISCMISCELLANEOUS
FUNCTIONS
All ofthe parameters discussedabovewereassociatedwith the four keyboard zones.Thereare
afew other functions which affect the operation ofthe instrument asa whole.
RECEIVE
CHANNEL
The active SL-1100preset may bechangedby an external MIDI deviceconnected to the MIDI
input on the back panel. The SL-1100will respond to program change commandsonthe
channelspecifiedwiththeRCVCHANNELfunction.
Toset the MIDI receivechannel, press and hold any zone switch, then press the FUNCTION 1
switch three times. Release both switches. The display will indicate the current receive channel
which may be changed with the slider. Todisable receipt ofprogram changes, move the slider
to selectthe-dash"-". Pressthe blinking FUNCTION switch to exit the edit mode.
PROGRAMSAVE
AND LOAD
The SL-1100internal memory will retain data for thirty two presets. Thisdata may besaved into
an externalcomputer orstoragedeviceusing the SAVEfunction.
Connectoneofthe SL-1100MIDI outputs to the MIDI input ofthe storage device."Pressand hold
any zone switch. To send sys-exmemory data, pressthe SAVEswitch. After sys-exhas been
transmitted, the unit willreturn to perform mode.

Toload the SL-1100memory from an external device, connect the MIDI output ofthe deviceto
the MIDI input ofthe SL-1100.Press and hold any zone switch. Toenable receipt ofsys-ex
data, press the LOAD switch (the display will display "L").The SL-1100willremain in this mode,
waiting to receivesys-exdata.
Activate the transmission ofsys-exdataonthestorage device. After the system-exclusivedata
has been received, the SL-1100willreturn to Perform Mode. Toterminate loadmode manually,
press the blinking switch.
PRESET
INITIALIZATION
The SL-1100isshipped from the factory with fourdemonstration presets inlocations 11through
14.After these locations have been changed by the user, itispossibleto restorethe four demo
presetsasfollows:
l.Switch off powerto the SL-1100.
2.Press and hold the Load and Save switches.
3.Switchon SL-1100power.
