operator’s manual, may cause

in which case the user will be

1 - EASY BATTERY ACCESS
Powered by a convenient 9-volt battery system, the AML features long, powerful on-the-
job usage between battery changes.
2 - ERGONOMIC HANDLE
Ergonomic handle provides a firm grip in any weather condition.
3 - POWER & 4-POSITION SENSITIVITY SWITCH
This switch controls the unit’s power supply and sensitivity. Once the unit is on,
the operator can choose the appropriate sensitivity setting depending on each job’s
conditions.
4 - RIGHT SIDE & LEFT SIDE TARGET INDICATORS
Easy to read left and right LED target indicators identify when an object has been
located, and when the object is in parallel with the AML. Audio and laser target
indicators work in unison with the right and left LEDs to alert the operator of an
object’s presence, and to place its location.
5 - LED POWER INDICATOR
The power indicator emits a bright green LED light when the unit is on. This LED also
serves as the battery life indicator, and flashes when battery power is low.
6 - LIGHTWEIGHT, DURABLE CONSTRUCTION
The brightly colored AML is constructed from lightweight, shock-resistant materials that
make it easy to use and handle throughout the work day.
7 - GROUND-PENETRATING, ULTRA-HIGH RADIO FREQUENCY TRANSMITTER
Using advanced circuit board technology, a powerful 2.4 GHz ground-penetrating, ultra-
high frequency locates objects. Man-made objects or conditions with a straight edge
create a change in conductivity, density and/or permeability from surrounding materials,
causing a reflection or refraction that is detected by the AML.
8 - LASER TARGET INDICATOR
An easy-to-see laser indicator marks the target position on the ground when an object
has been detected.
9 - ULTRA-HIGH RADIO FREQUENCY RECEIVERS
Highly sensitive left and right side receivers intercept frequency reflections and
refractions set off by the edges of buried objects. When the unit is positioned over and
parallel to an object, both the left and right indicators are activated. The user can then
track the object in slow and deliberate movements, identifying its shape, location and
run direction.

With the AML in parallel with the pipe or
underground object, you can now scan the entire
length of the object’s edge. As an alternative, utilize
the “W” method of scanning by sweeping the area
in a back-and-forth “W” motion, marking the object’s
location and run direction as it is tracked.

UNDERSTANDING
ULTRA-HIGH RADIO
FREQUENCIES
The key to how the AML
works is to understand
how its ground-penetrating
radio frequency detects
objects. Holding the AML’s handle parallel to the ground,
scan the area of the suspected pipe or buried object
until one or both of the AML’s target indicators
activate.
While the left or right target indicator is activated,
rotate the AML until both LED target indicators light
simultaneously, triggering the AML’s tone and laser
marker. This alert indicates that the pipe or object
has been detected and that the AML is now parallel
with the underground object.

Safe Maintenance & Inspection
of the AML – DO NOT open the
housing as this is for maintenance
or inspection and this will impair
the transmission and receiving
antennae. There are NO user
serviceable parts inside. Doing so
will void the warranty.

end goes in first.)
3. Battery leads face in up position.

Laser Safety
Read and strictly observe the
safety warnings in the operating
instructions of the laser.
Do not operate the AML in
explosive atmospheres, such as
in the presence of flammable
liquids, gases or dusts. Sparks
can be created in the AML
which may ignite the dust or
fumes.
Do not direct the laser beam
at persons or animals. Do not
stare into the laser beam. The
AML produces Laser Class 2M
laser radiation according to IEC
60825-1.
Looking or viewing directly into
the laser beam - especially with
optical instruments such as
binoculars or magnifiers, can
permanently damage the eye.
Do not allow children to use the
AML without supervision. They
could unintentionally blind other
persons or themselves.

Battery Packs/Batteries
Protect batteries from excessive heat,
continuous intense sunlight and fire.
Danger of explosion.
Always replace all batteries at the same
time. Only use batteries from one brand
and with the identical capacity. When
storing for longer periods, the batteries
can corrode and discharge themselves.
Remove the batteries from the AML
when not in use for long periods.
Battery Packs/Disposal
Do not dispose of battery packs/
batteries into household, waste, fire or
water. Battery packs/batteries should
be collected, recycled or disposed of in
an environmental-friendly manner.
European Countries
Defective or dead battery packs/
batteries must be recycled according to
the guideline 91/157/EEC, or per local
regulations.
Repair
Have the AML repaired only through
SubSurface Instruments Inc., using
original replacement parts. This
ensures that the safety of the locator is
maintained.
Disposal
The AML, accessories and packaging
should be sorted for environment-
friendly recycling.

Warranty Period: 36 months
/ (3) years from original user’s
purchase. The All Materials
Locator (AML) is specifically
guaranteed to be free of defect in
both material and workmanship
to the original end user or
purchaser. Save your receipt for
reference.
Physical abuse, battery acid and
water damage as determined at
the sole discretion of SubSurface
Instruments Inc., are explicitly
and entirely excluded from this
warranty. Additionally, this is a
scientific instrument and cannot
be protected by the manufacturer
from damage if dropped or placed
in an environment which will
cause physical or chemical harm
to the unit; therefore this shall be
considered abuse also.
SubSurface Instruments’ Liability
under this warranty is absolutely
limited to repair, service, or
replacement of the product, at
the sole discretion of SubSurface
Instruments Inc. No other
warranty is expressed or implied.
WARRANTY STATEMENT
