but the SPIDs have not yet been initialized. It is solid green
once the SPIDs have been accepted.
• Red:Noframesynchronizationhasbeenestablished.
FRAME
• Green:thetestsetisreceivingavalidsignalandhasacquired
frame synchronization on the external clock signal.
• Red:Thetestsetisnotdetectingtheexternalclocksignalat
the interface. See External Clock Signal.
ERRORS
• Red:Thetestsetiscurrentlydetectinganerror.ForS/TIn-
terface testing, this could be a Frame error. For U interface
testing, this could be NEBE or FEBE errors.
• BlinkingRed:Thetestsethaspreviouslydetectedanerror,
but that error is no longer present.

BPV/CODE
• Red:ThetestsetiscurrentlydetectingaBipolarViolationon
the S/T interface.
• BlinkingRed:ThetestsethaspreviouslydetectedaBPVon
the S/T interface, but the error is no longer present.
PAT SYNC
• Green:Thetestsethasachievedpatternsynchronizationdur-
ing IDSL BERT testing or during an ISDN data call.
• Red:Thetestsethaslostpatternsynchronizationorcannot
achieve pattern sync.
BIT ERR
• Red:Thetestsetiscurrentlydetectingbiterrors.

used when the S/T interface has been selected S/T inTEST

T1/E1 EXT CLK
This bantam port should be used to retrieve timing from the T1 or
E1signal.UseitinLTmodewhenEXT-T1orEXT-E1hasbeen
selected as the TX Clock source. This reference signal can be
obtained from the output of the BITS clock or any T1/E1 signal
carryingthenetworkclockreference.
U EXT CLK
This port should be used to retrieve the timing from the U interface
2B1Qsignal.UseitinLTmodewhenEXT-Uhasbeenselectedas
the TX Clock source. A U 2B1Q reference signal can be obtained
from an IDSL output on a DSLAM.
HANDSET
This is an RJ-9 port that requires the Sunrise Telecom SS427
handset.

• NT-144K:EmulatetheUinterfacesideofanNT1deviceand
terminates the signal. This mode should be used to emulate
the user side and run a BERT test on any combination of B
andD-channels.In144Kmode,thetestpatternwillbeinserted
on the selected test channel.
• NT-LOOP:EmulatetheUinterfacesideofanNT1deviceand
loop the received signal.In this mode, the entire 144 kbps signal
willbeloopedfromthereceivetotransmitsignal.NT-LOOP
mode is similar to the upper illustration in Figure 4; the only
differenceisthemodulewillloopthereceivedsignalbackto
theswitch.
• LT-144K:EmulateanLTdeviceandterminatethesignal.This
modeshouldbeusedtoemulatetheswitch/networksideand
run a BERT test on any combination of B and D-channels. In
144Kmode,thetestpatternwillbeinsertedonthetestchan-
nelselectedbelow.
• LT-LOOP:EmulateanLTdeviceandloopthereceivedsignal.
Inthismode,theentire144kbpssignalwillbeloopedfrom
thereceivetotransmitsignal.LT-LOOPmodeissimilartothe
lowerillustrationinFigure4;theonlydifferenceisitloopsthe
receivedsignalbacktowardthecustomer.

Tx CLOCK
Options:INT(F1),EXT-T1(F2),EXT-E1(F3),EXT-U(F4)
The transmit clock setting determines the clock source to time the
transmit signal. This is applicable to LT mode only; for NT mode,
the test set uses the timing received from the network. Exter-
naltimingshouldbeusedwhentheIDSLcircuitistransported
through a digital loop carrier system that is timed off a central
networkclock.
• INT:Usethetestsetsinternalclocktotimethetransmitsignal.
Itisthemasterclockonthenetwork.
• EXT-T1: Use an external T1 timing source from theT1/E1
EXTCLKbantamport.TheexternalT1timingsourcecanbe
from the output of the BITS clock or any T1 signal carrying the
networkclockreference.
• EXT-E1: Use an external E1 timing source from theT1/E1
EXTCLKbantamport.TheexternalE1timingsourcecanbe
from the output of the BITS clock or any E1 signal carrying
thenetworkclockreference.
• EXT-U:Useanexternaltimingsourcefromthe2-wireUInter-
face,theUEXTCLKport.TheU-2B1QIDSLoutputfromthe
DSLAM can be used an external U-reference source

Determinewhichchanneltotestandinsertatestpattern.This
settingisapplicableonlytoLTorNT-144Kmodes.Forloopmodes,
theentire144K(2B+D)signalislooped.
• B1:TesttheB-channel1.B-channel1containsthetestpattern,
B2 and D are idle.
• B2:TesttheB-channel2.B-channel2containsthetestpattern,
B1 and D are idle.
• D:TesttheD-channel.TheD-channelcontainsthetestpattern,
both B-channels are idle.
• B1+B2:Test both B-channels. Both B-channels contain the
test pattern, the D-channel is idle.
• 2B+D:TestbothB-channelsandtheD-channel.Thismeans
the test pattern is placed in B1, B2, and D-channels.
TEST PATTERN
Determine the test pattern the test set will transmit. Press F1
display a TEST PATTERN selection screen. In it select a pattern
using and press ENTER. The just selected pattern is
displayedontheTESTPATTERNlineintheTESTCONFIGURA-
TIONscreen.Theavailablepatternsare:
• 63:Alsoknownas2e6,itisapseudorandomsequencegener-

atedwitha6-bitshiftregister.
• 127: Also known as 2e7, it is a pseudorandom sequence
generatedwitha7-bitshiftregister.
• 511: Also known as 2e9, it is a pseudorandom sequence
generatedwitha9-bitshiftregister.
• 2047:Alsoknownas2e11,itisapseudorandomsequence
generatedwitha11-bitshiftregister.
• 2e15:This is a pseudorandom sequence generated with a
15-bit shift register.
• 2e20:This is a pseudorandom sequence generated with a
20-bit shift register.
• ALL1:Thisisanallonespattern.
• ALL0:Thisisanallzerospattern.
• 1010:Thisisanalternatingonesandzerospattern.
In addition to the standard patterns, three custom test patterns
may be stored at USER1, USER2, or USER3.
To create a custom pattern:
1. In TEST PATTERN, select either USER1, USER2, or
USER3.
2. Press F1 to create and the cursor shifts to the USERx line.
3. Press SHIFT then enter the bit pattern using the keypad. This
is in binary format so enter 1’s and 0’s. Enter up to 16 bits.
• Ifamistakeismadewhileenteringadigit:
A. Press SHIFT and use to select the incorrect digit.
B. Press SHIFT again and use the numeric keypad to enter
the correct digit.
4. Whennished,pressDONE(F1).
5. Select the just created USER pattern and press ENTER. The
selected USER is then displayed in the TEST PATTERN line
intheTESTCONFIGURATIONscreen.
Whennished,pressESC.

2.1.2 EOC Control
IfLTwasselectedastheTESTMODE,aloopbackcanbeused
on NT1 and any U-repeaters in the this screen. The Embedded
OperationsChannelisa2kbpssectionofoverheadontheISDN
basic rate signal. It carries special commands to U-BRITE cards,
mid-span repeater, or NT1s.

Thefollowingcommandscanbesent:
• NORMAL:ReturntoNormalmessageisusedtoloopdown
a device and to return it to an idle condition. It is also the idle
conditionwhichisconstantlybeingsentontheEOCchannel.
After looping a device and running the test, send this command
to return the device to its normal state.
• LOOP2BD:Thiscommandloopsthewhole144kpipe:both
B-channels and the D-channel.
• LOOPB1orLOOPB2:ThiscommandloopsthespeciedB-
channel data stream, either B1 or B2.
• REQ_CRC:TheRequestCorruptedCRCmessagestellsthe
addressed device to send CRC errors toward the network.
Use this it to check CRC error detection at the U interface.
• NTI_CRC:NotifyCorruptedCRCtellstheaddresseddevice
that the network will be sending CRCs towards customer
equipment.
• HLD_STA:TheHoldStatemessagetellstheaddresseddevice
to hold its current state.
EOC BITS
AsselectionsineithertheADDRESSorCOMMANDeldsare
made,theEOCBITSwillchangeaccordingly.However,ifdesired,
they may be manually entered by:
1. Press SHIFT and use the numeric keypad to enter zeros and
ones.

ACT: The Activation or start-up bit is set to 1 during the start up
sequence to communicate readiness for layer 1 communication.
DEA
:The Deactivation or turn-off bit is set to 0 by the LT to indicate
itsintentiontotakedownlayer1.
SCO
:Thisbitissetto1bytheLTtonotifytheNT1thattheLTwill
deactivatetheloopbetweencalls.
UOA
:TheUinterfaceOnlyActivationbitissetto1toindicateto
the NT1 to activate the S/T Interface or it is set for 0 to tell the
NT1 to deactivate the S/T Interface.

AIB
: The Alarm Indication Bit is set to 1 to indicate good framing
and timing from the NT1 or it is set to 0 to indicate a loss of signal
of frame synchronization from the NT1 to LT.
PS1, PS2
:ThesearePowerStatus1and2bits.Theyareusedto
indicatetheNT1’spowerstatus.Thesearecodedasfollows:
• 11:AllNormalPower,primaryandsecondaryareinservice.
• 10:Secondarypowerisoutofservice.
• 01:Primarypowerisoutofservice.
• 00:Primaryandsecondaryareoutofservice.
NTM
: The NT1 in Test Mode bit is set to 0 to indicate that the
NT1 is in a customer initiated test mode and may not be able to
respond to messages or eoc commands.
CSO
:TheColdStartOnlybitissetto1toindicatethattheNT1
hasaColdStartOnlytransceiver.
SAI
:The S/T Interface Activation Indicator bit is set to 1 to indicate
the S/T Interface is active or it is set to 0 to indicate no activity.

The measurements refer to
out of service testing with a
known test pattern. The test
set must have pattern sync to
measure bit errors; otherwise
it reports UAS.

ET: Elapsed Time in Hours:Minutes:Seconds
RT: Remaining Time is Continuous in a untimed measurement.
RX: Received test pattern.
TX: Transmitted test pattern.
AS: Count of Available Seconds since the start of the test. A bit AS
is any bit error-free, bit errored, or bit severely errored second.
%AS: Percentage of Available Seconds since the start of the
test.
