About This Manual
This manual is written for professional system integrators and PC technicians. It
provides information for the installation and use of the SC836 3U chassis. Installa-
tion and maintenance should be performed by experienced technicians only.
Supermicro’s SC836 3U chassis features a unique and highly-optimized design for
dual-core Xeon platforms. The chassis is equipped with a redundant 800W high
ef ciency power supply. High performance fans provide ample optimized cooling for
FB-DIMM memory modules and 16 hot-swap drive bays offers maximum storage
capacity in a 3U form factor.
This document lists compatible parts available when this document was published.

1-1 Overview
Supermicro’s SC836 3U chassis features a uniqueandhighly-optimized design.
Thechassis is equipped with a redundant high ef ciency power supply. High per-
formancefansprovide ampleoptimized cooling forFB-DIMM memory modules and
16 hot-swap drivebaysoffer maximum storagecapacity in a 3U form factor.

1-3 Chassis Features
The SC836 3U high performancechassis includes thefollowing features:
CPU Support
The SC836 Chassis supportsa DP Dual-core Xeon processor. Please refer to
themotherboard specicationspages on ourWebsiteforupdates on supported
processors forthis chassis
Hard Drives
The SC836 Chassis features 16 slotsfor U320 SCSI or SAS/SATA drives. These
drives are hot swappable. In other words, once setup correctly, these drives can
be removed without powering down the server. In addition, these drives support
SAF-TE (SCSI) and SES2 (SAS/SATA).
I/O Expansion slots
Each version of the SC836 Chassis includes 7 full I/O expansion slots.
Peripheral Drives
Each SC836 Chassis supportsone slim DVD-ROMDrive (included) andone slim
Floppy Drive (optional). These drives allow you to quickly install or save data.
Other Features
Other onboard features are included to promote system health. These include
variousvecooling fans, a convenient power switch, reset button, and LEDindica-
tors.

System Safety
2-1 Overview
This chapter provides a quick setup checklist to get yourchassis up and running.
Following the steps in order givenshould enableyou to haveyourchassis setup and
operational within a minimal amount of time. These instructionsassumethat you
are an experienced technician, familiarwith common conceptsandterminology.
2-2 Warnings and Precautions
You should inspect thebox thechassis was shipped in andnote ifit was damaged
in any way. If thechassis itself shows damage, leadamageclaim with thecarrier
who delivered your system.
Decide on a suitablelocation forthe rack unit that will holdthechassis. Itshould
be situated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated. Avoid areaswhere
heat, electrical noise and electromagnetic elds are generated.
You will also need it placed nearat least two grounded power outlets. The SC836
chassis includes two redundant power supplies which require two grounded out-
lets.
2-3 Preparing for Setup
The SC836 Chassis includes aset of rail assemblies,including mounting brackets
andmounting screwsyou will need to install the systems into the rack.Please read
this manual inits entirety before you begin the installation procedure.
2-4 Electrical Safety Precautions
Basicelectrical safety precautions shouldbefollowed to protect yourself from harm
andthe SC836 from damage:
lBe aware of thelocationsof thepower on/off switch on thechassis aswell
asthe room’s emergency power-off switch, disconnection switch or electri-

cal outlet. If an electrical accident occurs, you can then quickly remove
power from the system.
lDo not work alonewhen working with high voltagecomponents.
lPower shouldalwaysbe disconnected from the system whenremoving or
installing mainsystem components,such asthe serverboard, memory mod-
ules andtheDVD-ROMandfloppy drives (not necessary forhot swappable
drives). Whendisconnecting power, you shouldrst power down the
system with theoperating system andthen unplug thepower cords from all
thepower supply modules in the system.
lWhen working around exposed electrical circuits, another person who is fa-
miliarwith thepower-off controls shouldbenearby to switch off thepower,
if necessary.
lUse only onehandwhen working with powered-on electrical equipment.
This is to avoid making a completecircuit, which will cause electrical shock.
Use extremecaution when using metal tools, which can easily damageany
electrical componentsorcircuit boards they come into contact with.
lDo not use mats designed to decrease electrostaticdischargeasprotection
from electrical shock. Instead, use rubber matsthat havebeenspecically
designed as electrical insulators.
lThepower supply power cord mustinclude a grounding plug andmust be
plugged into grounded electrical outlets.
lServerboard Battery: CAUTION - There is adanger of explosion if the
onboard batteryis installed upside down, which will reverse itspolarities
This battery must be replaced only with the sameoran equivalent type
recommended by themanufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to
themanufacturer’s instructions.
lDVD-ROM Laser:CAUTION - this server may havecome equipped with a
DVD-ROM drive. To prevent direct exposure to thelaser beam andhazard-
ous radiation exposure,do not open the enclosure oruse theunitin any
unconventional way.

lKeep thearea aroundthechassis clean andfree of clutter.

lPlacethechassis top cover andany system componentsthat havebeen
removed away from the system oron a table so that they won’t accidentally
be stepped on.
lWhileworking on the system, do not wearloose clothing such asneckties
andunbuttoned shirtsleeves, which can come into contact with electrical
circuitsorbepulled into a cooling fan.
lRemoveany jewelry ormetal objectsfrom yourbody, which are excellent
metal conductors that can create short circuitsandharm you if they come
into contact with printed circuit boards orareaswhere power is present.
lAfter accessing the inside of the system, close the system back up and
secure it to the rack unit with the retention screwsafter ensuring that all
connectionshavebeen made.
2-6 System Safety
Electrostaticdischarge (ESD) is generated by two objectswith different electrical
charges coming into contact with each other. Anelectrical discharge is created to
neutralizethis difference, which can damage electronic componentsandprinted
circuit boards. Thefollowing measures are generally suf cient to neutralizethis
differencebefore contact is made to protect your equipment from ESD:
lDo not use mats designed to decrease electrostaticdischargeasprotection
from electrical shock. Instead, use rubber matsthat havebeenspecically
designed as electrical insulators.
lUse a grounded wriststrap designed to prevent staticdischarge.
lKeep all componentsandprinted circuit boards (PCBs) in their antistatic
bagsuntilready foruse.
lTouch a grounded metal object before removing any board from itsanti-
static bag.
lDo not let componentsorPCBs come into contact with yourclothing, which
may retain a charge evenif you are wearing a wriststrap.
lHandlea board by its edges only; do not touch itscomponents, peripheral
chips, memory modules orcontacts.

lWhen handling chipsormodules, avoid touching their pins.
lPut the serverboard andperipheralsback into their antistatic bagswhen
not in use.
lForgrounding purposes, make sure yourcomputer chassis provides excel-
lent conductivity between thepower supply, thecase, themounting fasten-
ers andthe serverboard.

3-2 Components
Chassis and Chassis Bays
Chassis include one slimCD-ROMbay, one slim floppy discdrive bay, onefront port
panel, and 16 hard drive bays. Most chassis models include a DVD-ROM. Floppy
discdrives andhard drives must bepurchased separately. Forthelatestshipping

Backplane
Each SC836 chassis comes with a 3U backplane. Depending on ourorder, your
backplanewill accept SAS/SATA drives,SAS only, or SCSI drives. Formore in-

Fans
The SC836 chassis acceptsve system fanswith an optional fth fan. System fans
for SC836 chassis are powered from the serverboard. These fansare 3U compat-
ible andare powered by 3-pin connectors.
Mounting Rails
The SC836 can beplaced in a rack for secure storageand use. Tosetup your
rack, follow the step-by-stepinstructions included in this manual.

Power Supply
Each SC836 chassis modelincludes redundant high-ef ciency "hot-swappable"
power supply rated at 800 Watts. In theunlikely event power supply fails in one
power supply, you can removeand replacethefaulty power supply without power-
ing down the system.
Air Shroud
Air shrouds are shields, usually plastic, that funnel air directly to where itis needed.
Always use the air shroud included with your chassis.
