Manual
We recommendthatyou familiarise yourself
with your new paragliderbyreadingthis
Manual beforeyour firstflight. This willallow
you to acquaintyourselfits new functions,to
learn the bestway to fly the paragliderin
various situations,andexplainhow to get the
bestout of your paraglider.
Information in this Manual ondesignof the
paraglider,technicaldataandillustrations
are subjecttochange.We reservethe right
to makechanges withoutpriornotification.
The Manual complieswiththeairworthiness
requirementsin LTF NFL II 91/09 and forms
part of the certification.

Respect for nature and the
environment
You can easilyplay a part in protecting the
environmentbypractisingoursportin sucha
way that there is nodamage to natureand
the areas in whichwe fly. Keep to marked
trails,take your rubbishawaywithyou,
refrainfrom makingunnecessarynoise and
respectthe sensitivebiologicalequilibrium of
nature. Considerationfornatureis required
even at the launchsite!
Paraglidingis,ofcourse,anoutdoor sport–
protect and preserve our planet’s resources.
Environmentally-friendly recycling
Swing gives considerationto the entire life
cycle of its paragliders,the finalstage of
which is recycling in an environmentally-
friendlymanner.Thesynthetic materials
usedin a paraglidermustbedisposed of
properly. If you arenot ableto arrange
appropriatedisposal,Swingwillbehappyto
recycle the paragliderforyou. Send the
gliderwitha shortnote to this effect to the
address giveninthe Appendix.

WARNING
The safetyadvice given belowmustbe
followedinall circumstances.Failureto
do sorenders invalidthecertification
and/orresults inloss ofinsurancecover,
and couldleadto serious injuriesoreven
death.
Safety advice
All forms ofaerialsportinvolve certainrisks.
When compared withothertypes of aerial
sport,paragliding has the lowestnumber of
fatal accidents measured according to the
numberoflicensedpilots.
However, few other sports demandsucha
high level of individualresponsibilityas
paragliding.Prudenceandrisk-awareness
are basicrequirementsforthe safepractice
of the sport, for the very reasonthat it is so
easyto learnandpracticallyanyone can do
so.Carelessnessandoverestimating one’s
own abilities canquicklyleadto critical
situations.Areliableassessmentof
conditions forflying is particularlyimportant.
Paragliders arenotdesignedtobeflownin
turbulentweather.Most serious paraglider
accidents arecausedbypilots misjudging
the weatherfor flying.
Paragliders themselves areextremelysafe.
In the type certificationtests,all component
parts of a paraglidermustwithstandeight
times theloadofnormalflight.There is a
three-foldsafetymargin comparedtothe
maximum extremeloadoccurringinflight.
This is higherthanthe two-fold marginusual
in aviation. Accidents causedbymaterial
failure are thereforepracticallyunheard of in
paragliding.
In Germany, paragliders are subjecttothe
guidelinesforairsports equipmentand must
not underany circumstances be flown
withouta valid certification. Independent
experimentation is strictlyprohibited.This
Manual does notreplacethe needto attend
trainingat a paraglidingschool.
A specialistmusttest-flyandinspectthe
paragliderbeforeyour firstflight. The test-
flight mustberecorded onthe paraglider
informationlabel.
Carry out your first flight withthe paraglider
on a trainingslope.Forthis flight andfor all
other flights,you mustwearan approved
helmet,gloves,firm shoes withankle-
supportandsuitableclothing.Onlyfly if the
winddirection,windspeedandcurrentand
forecastedweatherconditions guaranteea
safeflight.
The Manual mustbepassedonto any new
ownerif the paraglideris sold.It is part of the
certificationandbelongs withthe paraglider.
The Nexus was developedandtestedsolely
for useas a paragliderforfoot-launchand
winch-towing.Any useotherthan as
intended is notpermitted.Do not underany
circumstancesusetheparaglideras a
parachute.Acrobatics are not permitted.
Observe the otherspecificsafetyadvice in
the various sections ofthis Manual.

Safety notices areissuedwhendefects arise
duringuseof a paragliderwhichcould
possiblyalsoaffect othergliders of the same
model.
The notices containinstructions onhow to
inspectthegliders concerned forpossible
faults andthe steps requiredtorectify any
faults.

safetynotices andairworthinessinstructions
whichare issuedinrespectofSwing
products.We willalsosendyousafety
notices directlyby emailifyou have
registered yourproduct (refer to “Product

carrying out the actionrequired by the

individually.This allows muchmore

previouslythe case.

Useof the paraglider is at the pilot’s own
risk!
The manufacturercannotbeheldliablefor
any personalinjuryormaterialdamage
whicharises inconnectionwithSwing
paragliders.Thecertificationand warranty
shall berenderedinvalid if there are changes
of any kind(incl. paragliderdesign or
changes tothe brakelines beyondthe
permissibletolerancelevels)orincorrect
repairs tothe glider,or if anyinspections are
missed(annual and2-yearlycheck).
Pilots areresponsiblefortheirown safety
and mustensurethatthe airworthinessof
the glideris checkedpriorto every flight. The
pilotshould launch onlyif the paraglideris
airworthy. In addition,when flying outsideof
Germany, pilots mustobserve the relevant
regulations ineachcountry.
The glidermayonlybe usedifthe pilothas a
licencewhichis valid for the area or is flying
underthe supervisionofanapproved flying
instructor.There is no liabilityon the part of
third parties,inparticularthe manufacturer
and the dealer.
Disclaimer and exclusion of liability
In terms of the warrantyand guarantee
conditions,theparaglidermaynot be flown if
any of the followingsituationsexists:
the inspectionperiodhas expired,orthe
inspectionhas beencarriedoutbyan
unauthorisedinspector
the pilothas insufficientexperienceor
training
the pilothas incorrector inadequate
equipment(reserve,protection,helmet
etc.)
the glideris usedforwinch-launching
with a winchwhichhas notbeen
inspectedorby non-licensedpilots
and/orwinchoperators

above 50°C
the glideris usedforaerobatics/extreme
flying or flight manoeuvres atanangle
greaterthan 90°
there have beenmodifications tothe
canopy, lines orrisers whichhave not
beenapproved
WARNING
The operatinglimits mustbeobserved
throughoutthe entireflight.
When planningyourflight, pay attention
to current andforecastedweather
conditions and temperature.Bearin mind
too that the temperaturewilldropas the
altitudeincreases.
WARNING
It is imperativethat the instructions
containedinthis Manual are followedat
all times.
Failureto do so renders invalidthe
glider’s certification and/or results in loss
of insurancecover. Furthermore,it could
leadto serious injuries orevendeath.
This applies inparticular,butnot only, to
the instructions giveninthe sections
Safety, Flying the Nexus, Types of Use
and Dangerous SituationsandExtreme
Flying.
Glider categories and
guidelines
The GermanHangglidingandParagliding
Association (DHV)and its safetydivision
have developedguidelines whicharebased
on manyyears of analysingparaglider
accidents andonthe experienceof flying
schools,flying instructors and safetyofficers.
Theseguidelinesshouldhelppilotstoselect
the appropriategliderclassificationfortheir
particularlevel of flying ability. The
informationbelowrelates tothe classification
in EN/LTF-certification.There is alsofurther
informationonthewebsite of the relevant
licensingbody.
WARNING
The descriptionsofflightcharacteristics
containedinthis Manual are allbasedon
experiences from the test flights,which
were carriedout understandardised
conditions.
The classificationis merelya description
of the reactions to these standardtests.
The complexityof the paraglidersystem
means thatit is not possibletogive any
morethana partial description ofthe
glider’s flight behaviourandreactions to
disturbances.Evena smallalterationin
individualparameterscanresultinflight
behaviourwhichis markedlymodifiedand
different from the description given.
EN/LTF certification
The Nexus received C classificationinthe
final classificationbythe licensingbody.
Description of flight characteristics
Paragliderwith a moderatelevelof passive
safetyand potentiallydynamicreactions to
turbulenceand piloterrors.Recovery to
normalflightmayrequireprecise pilotinput.

Pilots withextensive flying experience of at
leastapprox. 75 hours airtime peryear, who
are wantingto achievepeak performance,
e.g. in cross-countryflying, or who simply
appreciatedirecthandlingandvery good
properties inthermalflying.
Description of pilot skills required
Designedforpilots well-practised in
techniques torecover from abnormalflying
conditions,whoflyregularly, “actively”, and
who understandthepossibleimplicationsof
flying a paragliderwithreducedpassive
safety.
Suitability for training
The Nexus is generallynot suitable for use
as a trainingglider.

NEXUS - off the beaten track
The Nexus is a cross-countryglider
developed for toughconditions,whichis
reliable,intuitiveand has better performance
than ever, whetherat full throttle, or when
glidingorclimbing.Andthe rougherthe air,
the moreit is in its element!
The Nexus makes anychallengefun.The
completecontrolthrough the steeringlines
and the amazingstabilityof the canopywill
meanthat you consciouslyseekout rough
conditions andturbulence.
Thesefeatures makethe Nexus anoption
for a very broadgroupof pilots,from
experienced social pilots rightthroughtoace
cross-countrypilots goingafterrec-rds.It is a
true “all-terrain glider” for any distance and
all flying conditions,whichwillalsobe
appealinginpureracing.
Line system
The Nexus has A, B andC line levels,which
fork twice from the bottom (riser)to the top
(canopy) andwhichare divided into main,
middleandtoplines.Theindividualline
levels are connectedwithone anotherusing
the “handshakeknot”(special hoop
technology).
The MaintenanceandService bookhas a
detailedlineconnectionplan,showing the
individuallevels,connections and
descriptionsofthe lines.
With the brake lines,theindividuallevels are
bundledatthe end withthe mainbrakeline.
This runs throughthe brakepulleyattached
to the riserandis knotted at the brakeswivel
of the control handle.Thereis a markon the
mainbrake linewhich allows the control
handleto becorrectly positioned.
The mainlines areall attachedto Maillon
quicklinks.They are fed throughspecial
elasticrings and attachedto prevent the
lines from slippingandtoensurethat they sit
in the correct position.
WARNING
The paraglideris deliveredexfactory with
the Maillonquick links securedusinga
strongthread-lockingcompoundLoctite
to prevent unintentionalopening.After
servicework, quick links whichhave
beenopenedmustbesecured again
againstunintentionalopening.

WARNING
The serviceintervals for the lines givenin
the MaintenanceandService bookmust
be observedunderallcircumstances.
The Nexus has sheathedlines with
diameters ofless than1mm.Thereis a
riskof the lines breaking ifthere is
improperuse orif serviceintervals are
not observed.
WARNING
Performanceintermediategliderswith
extremelythin linediameters are under
no circumstances suitableforacro flying
or radicalextremeflight manoeuvres.
Risers
The 12mm widerisersspeciallydeveloped
for the Nexus withKevlar reinforcement
allowthe pilotto adjustthe speedofthe
Nexus using apulleysystem to suithis/her
individualpreference.Thereis more
informationonusing the speedsystem in the
section “Flying the Nexus”.

The Maintenanceand Service bookhas
detailedtechnicalinformation,including take-
off weight,designinformationandspeed
range.It alsoincludes extensiveinformation

04 Settingup the Nexus
andtest-flying
Before the first flight
WARNING
A specialistmusttest-flyandinspectthe
gliderbeforeyour firstflight. The test-
flight mustberecorded onthe glider
informationlabel.
During production,the Nexus goes through
several qualitycontrol checks before finally
undergoing an exact type certification test.
Conformitywith the referencespecimen is
checkedandcertified before the glideris
deliveredto the customer.Extreme careis
taken in the manufactureof allpatterns,lines
and riserlengths.Theyshowa highlevel of
precisionandshould notbealtered under
any circumstances.
WARNING
Any changes orimproperrepairs tothis
paragliderrenderinvalidthecertification
and warranty.
Adjusting the main brake lines
The Nexus is delivered ex factory with a
brake adjustmentmarkedwhichcomplies
with the testsampleand whichshouldnotbe
altered.This adjustmentwill allowyouto
steerandland the paraglider withalmostno
timelag.
The mainbrakelines mustbecheckedby an
expert before the test flight, andmustbe
fastenedso that the markis visibleapprox.
5mm abovethe knot.
Factory setting
Correctlyinstalledbrakelines haveabout
10cm of feed. This is howfar you mustpull
downthe brakes beforethe trailingedgeof
the paragliderstarts tomovedownwards and
begins tobrake. Notethat the brake
cascades alreadycausedragby their
aerodynamicresistance.
Modern gliders suchas the Nexus have less
tolerancewithregard to adjustmentofthe
brake lines.It is thereforenormallynot
necessarytoalter the length.
If you donevertheless adjustthebrakes,
underno circumstances shouldyougo
above or below the tolerancelevels given in
the Maintenanceand Service book.
Incorrect adjustment
If the brakelines aretoo long, the paraglider
reacts slowlyandis difficult to land. The
brake lines canbe adjustedduringflightby
wrappingthem aroundyourhands whichwill
improvethe flight characteristics.Adjustthe
brake lines to the correct lengthafter you
have landed.Changes tothe braking
distanceshouldalways bemade insmall
increments ofnomorethan2 to 3cm and
mustbetestedon a trainingslope.Theleft
and right brakes mustbeadjusted
symmetrically.
If the brakes areshortened,caremustbe
taken that the paraglideris notsloweddown
in trim andacceleratedflightbecauseof the
brake lines beingtooshort.Safety issues
mayarise andperformanceandlaunch

The overhandknot and bowlineknotshown

the brake lineto the brakehandle.

Adjusting the brake handle
The Nexus is fitted with Swing’s Multigrip
brake handles,which allows the stiffnessof
the griparea to be adjusted.Thevarious
options forstiffeningthe brakehandles allow

them to be adjusted to suit the pilot’s
particularpreferences.Thereare4 levels of
stiffness possibleusingvarious combinations
of the stiffening options.The pilot is ableto
choose theappropriate degreeofstiffness
by simplytakingout or inserting thevarious
parts.

There is alsoaswivel wherethe brake
lines/brakehandles connectto prevent the
brake lines from twisting.
Speed system
The Nexus alreadyhas a highbasictrim
speed,butthis can be increased
considerablyby usingtheadditional speed
system.It is particularlyusefulif there is a
strongheadwind,forvalley crossingsorto
leave a dangerous areaquickly.
The A- and B-risers canbeshortened using
the speed bar. This decreases the canopy’s
originalangleofattack and the speedofthe
gliderincreases.
The speedsystem mustbecorrectlyfitted
and adjustedto ensureit operates smoothly
duringflight. Before first launch,the length
shouldbeadjustedtosuitthe pilotandthe
speedsystem shouldbechecked.
The speedbarandthe riserare connected
by specialBrummelhooks.Adjustthe length
to the speedsystem sothatyour legs are
fully stretched whenat maximum
acceleratedflight(the two riserpulleys next
to each other), otherwiseyoumay
experiencesymptoms offatiguein long
flights.You shouldstillbeina comfortable
flight positioneven whenthe speed system
is usedto its full extent.

TIP
The Nexus alreadyhas very goodglide
performancein trim flight. What is
important,however, is not onlythe
maximum glidebutinparticularreaching
this at the highestpossiblespeed.The
Nexus therefore has a specifically
developed speed system,withwhich best
glideis reached notin trim speedbut at
approx. 15-20%acceleration.Thus,not
onlyis glideperformanceevenbetter, but
it is reachedat a speed approx. 3-5km/h
fasterthan with othergliders inthe same
class.
This “overdrive” provides clear
advantages particularlywhenglidinginto
the windandin turbulentconditions.
You will not be able to use the paraglider’s
full potentialif the speedsystem is toolong.
Fastenthe speedbarto the harness before
launchto avoid trippingover it when
preparingtolaunchor taking off.
WARNING
Do not make the speed system tooshort.
The glidermustundernocircumstances
be pre-acceleratedas a resultof the
adjustmentbeingtooshort.
Problems (suchas collapsesortucks)
have a moredrasticeffect with increased
speedthaninunacceleratedflight.It is
generallystronglyrecommendedthatyou
do not use thespeedsystem inturbulent
areas andwhen flying closeto the
ground,becauseofthe increasedriskof
collapse.

C-bridge system
The Nexus riserhas a speciallydesigned
bridgesystem whichallows thepilotto make
very precise corrections usingtheC-risers,
giving better handlingin acceleratedand
unacceleratedflight.
Various problems canbepreventedby
brieflypullingdowntherear C-risers.
WARNING
Pull downthe rear C-risers onlybriefly.
Pullingthem downtoofar for too long
couldcauseastall.
Flight directioncan be adjustedwithout
losingspeedorperformancebypullingthe
front C-risers.
Other features
The Nexus does not have a trimmerorany
other adjustable,detachableor variable
features in additionto the speedbar.
Suitable Harnesses
GH group or race harnesses withseatboard
are suitableforuse withthe Nexus.
Tests have shownthatthe harness,harness
adjustment and the pilot’s positioninthe
harness haveanoticeableeffect on a
glider’s flight behaviour, particularly the
heightof the attachmentpoints andtheir
separationdistance.Thegeneralruleis that
the lowerthe attachmentpoint,the more
agilethe paraglider.
Useof harnesses withoutseatboard can
resultinflight behaviourwhichdiffers from
the behaviourobservedduringflighttesting.
Be aware too that the relative braking
distancecanalso alterwith the heightof the

Reserve
It is a mandatoryrequirementtocarry an
approvedreserve for use in emergency
situations wheretheparagliderfails and
recovery is not possible,forexample after
collidingwithanotheraerialsports craft.
In choosingareserve,you should becareful
that you remainwithinthespecifiedtake-off
weight.The reserve is fitted accordingto the
manufacturer’s instructions.
Recommended weight range
The Nexus mustbeflown withinthe
permittedweightrange,whichis given in the
Maintenanceand Service book. The weight
refers to take-off weight:pilot, incl. clothing,
glider,harness andequipment.Determine
your take-off weightby weighingyourself
with allof your equipmentand your
backpack.
Swing offers the Nexus invarious sizes.If
you arechoosingbetweentwosizes,your
personal flyingpreferences willdetermine
whichgliderto choose.
If you prefervery dynamicflight behaviour
with fastreactions andwithouthesitation,
you shouldchoose ahighwing-loading,i.e.
the smallermodel.
The dynamics reduceinthe medium and
lowerweightrange.Flight behaviour
becomes morestraightforward andmany
pilots selectthis weightrangebecausethey
find it easiertocentre in thermals.If these
features appealtoyou, you shouldflywith
less wing-loadingandchoosethelarger
model.
The Nexus reacts to weightchanges onlyby
slightlyincreasing orreducing trim speed,
with littlenoticeableinfluenceonglide
performance.You cantherefore choosethe
size completelyaccordingtoyour ownflying
style.
