Terminology Used in this Manual
1
................................................................................................................
Terminology Used in this Manual
Table 2 Terminology
Used in this Manual Private IP address An IP address assigned to a host within the company’s
network.
Public IP address A unique IP address assigned by the network
administrator, which is mapped to the Sentinel Pro's
internal IP address. A public IP address can be accessed
and used worldwide.
NAT
(Network Address
Translation)
Mapping a private IP address to a public IP address (and
vice versa) on a one-to-one basis.
NAT overload Dynamic NAT that maps multiple private addresses to a
single public address by using different ports.
DMZ (DeMilitarized
Zone) A computer or small network area that sits between a
trusted internal network, such as a corporate private
LAN, and an untrusted external network, such as the
public Internet. Typically, the DMZ contains devices
accessible to Internet traffic, such as Web (HTTP )
servers, FTP servers, and DNS servers.
The DMZ term comes from military use, meaning a buffer
area between two enemies.
Firewall A security system consisting of a combination of hardware
and software that limits the exposure of a computer or
computer network (or trusted internal network) to attack
from crackers; commonly used on local area networks
(LAN) that are connected to the internet (WAN).

2About the Coral Sentinel Pro
This chapter provides a functional and technical description of the Sentinel Pro. It also
describes the different areas of the Sentinel Pro unit.
................................................................................................................
Coral Sentinel Pro
The Coral Sentinel Pro is a Session Border Control (SBC) unit that enables the
connection of remote IP phones located behind NAT (Network Address Translation)
servers or firewalls. Its main purpose is to transfer signalling and RTP traffic through
the firewall or NAT server to the relevant endpoints in the LAN network.
The Sentinel Pro provides the following features:
Enables incoming traffic to be routed through a firewall, without the need to
open up a permanent channel to transmit and receive calls
Enables MGCP endpoints that are remotely located behind a NAT server to
transverse the server
Establishes local RTP sessions between remote MGCP endpoints located
behind the same NAT server, thereby freeing up Sentinel RTP resources
Enables NAT traversal and firewall penetration for real-time fax-based sessions
utilizing the T.38 protocol
Enables NAT traversal and firewall penetration for IP phones and softphones
with different media types such as Audio (high quality1G.722) and
Video (H.263)
The Sentinel Pro can operate with UCx, Coral FlexiCom, Coral IPx, and Aeonix
Systems.
For SIP endpoints use a 3rd party SBC.

8About the Coral Sentinel Pro Sentinel Pro Installation Procedure and Reference Manual - for Coral IPx / FlexiCom
The Need for Sentinel Pro
2
................................................................................................................
The Need for Sentinel Pro
Indirect Connection Caused by Firewalls
Firewalls do not allow direct connection from the outside world to the internal LAN,
as signalling and media traffic must first travel through the firewall.
The Coral Sentinel Pro acts as a transmission point, enabling all signalling and media
traffic to be routed to and from the remote IP endpoints.
Unique IP Sockets Assigned by NAT Devices
NAT devices assign a unique IP socket to every RTP session upon call setup. Coral (or
any other call agent or registrar) is unable to set up a session without knowing which
port the NAT will assign.
To address this, the Sentinel Pro acts as a meeting point. The IP endpoints direct their
RTP streams towards the Sentinel Pro, which detects the source IP socket, adjusting
the destination of the RTP streams it transmits accordingly.
Dedicated Ports for VoIP Signaling
Coral (as any call agent or registrar) assigns specific ports for the handling of VoIP
signaling data, as follows:
MGCP: 2427 or 2727
The IP sockets of incoming sessions have to be adjusted to contain the relevant port
number.
The Sentinel Pro acts like multiple virtual IP endpoints that receive the calls, redefine
the incoming IP sockets, and route them to the Coral unit through the relevant
signaling port.

Technical Description
2
................................................................................................................
Technical Description
The Sentinel Pro supports up to 240 MGCP endpoints, and concurrent voice, T.38 fax,
and video RTP sessions. The maximum number of RTP sessions the Sentinel Pro can
handle in parallel depends on its model:
Sentinel Pro 25 supports up to 25 concurrent audio RTP sessions.
Sentinel Pro 75 supports up to 75 concurrent audio RTP sessions.
Sentinel Pro 150 supports up to 150 concurrent audio RTP sessions.
Sentinel Pro endpoints may consist of any of the Tadiran’s IP phones such as
FlexSet-IP 280S, T200M Series.
Sentinel Pro Location in the Network
Depending on the network configuration, the Sentinel Pro unit may be located
anywhere in the DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone), on the LAN, or outside of the LAN. The
following figures are examples of the Sentinel Pro location in a network.
The purpose of the following configuration examples is to provide a general
idea of where the Sentinel Pro can be placed in a network. They should not
be used as a guideline for your network configuration.
The configuration in Figure 2 is recommended for networks with a three-legged
firewall supporting DMZ. The Sentinel Pro unit is placed between the router and the
firewall of the network.
