OE6250G-M Overview
The OE6250G-M is designed to help troubleshoot optical to electrical signal
integrity issues at the board level. For system integrators who deal with both
electrical and optical signals in their product, the OE6250G-M provides
electrical measurements on optical signal and takes full advantage of the
Teledyne LeCroy oscilloscope tool set and the broad debugging capabilities of
the Teledyne LeCroy Serial Data Analysis packages.
Utilizing the proprietary ProLink interface, the OE6250G-M becomes an
integrated part of the oscilloscope. The Optical wavelength, dark calibration
and reference receiver functions are all controlled from the oscilloscope’s
touch screen. The oscilloscope provides power to the converter, so no external
power supply is needed.
Key Features:
•Frequency range DC to 36 GHz (electrical, -3 dB)
o36 GHz (Flatness-optimized response)
o25 GHz (4th-order Bessel-Thomson response)
•50/125 μm multi-mode or single-mode fiber input
•Broad wavelength range (830 to 1600 nm)
Compatibility
The OE6250G-M convertor is compatible with oscilloscope series:
•WaveMaster 8 Zi/Zi-A/Zi-B
•LabMaster 10 Zi/Zi-A
Operation of the product requires oscilloscope firmware v.8.3.0.0 or later.

Safety
This symbol appears on the product or in its documentation to alert you to
important safety considerations.
CAUTION of potential damage to product, or WARNING of potential for
bodily injury. Attend to the accompanying information to protect against
injury or damage. Do not proceed until conditions are fully understood
and met.
The maximum input optical power must not exceed 10mW.Exceeding this
limit will result in permanent damage to the optical components.
When making optical connections, always clean the optical connector and
ensure the facet is free from dirt or impurities. See the instructions on p.6.
Do not install or terminate fibers while a light source is active. Care must be
taken to ensure that the instrument has been turned OFF before inspecting the
end face(s) of the instrument, or any optical patch cords connected to this
instrument. Never look directly into a live fiber, and ensure that your eyes are
protected at all times.
Check the connector type. Optical connectors used in the instrument are
FC/PC type. Ensure that you DO NOT connect FC/APC type connectors directly
to this instrument. Doing so will result in damaging the connector. A convertor
patch cord can be used in case FC/APC connectors need to be used.

Operation
Connecting the Unit
To connect the converter to the oscilloscope:
1. Connect the power cable by
aligning the red dot on the
LEMO plug to the red mark on
the oscilloscope’s LEMO
receptacle and pushing until
you hear a click.
2. Connect one end of the 2.92
mm cable to the 2.92 mm
connector on the OE6250G-M
and the other to the 2.92 mm
connector on the oscilloscope.
3. Clean and connect the optical
fiber as explained on p.6.
NOTE: To disconnect power, pull
back the knurled sleeve on the
LEMO plug to release the lock and
hold it in the released position while
pulling the cable out of the
receptacle.

Controlling from the Oscilloscope
After the connector is attached, the vertical scale shown on the Channel
descriptor box will automatically change to µW/div units. Turning the front
panel V/Div knob or changing the V/Div setting on the Cxdialog will adjust the
scale factor to give full dynamic range in µW/Div.
The OE6250G-M dialog behind the Cxdialog displays the converter’s attributes
and allows for the selection of the converter’s Dark Calibration, Reference
Receiver, and Optical Wavelength functions.
Dark Calibration
The OE6250G-M incorporates a Dark Calibration function to measure the channel
offset signal without any light present in the optical receiver.
The Set to Zero function resets the Dark Calibration value to zero. The Dark
Level field allows manual entry of the Dark Level offset (this will be overridden
by the “Dark Calibration” function).
Reference Receiver
The OE6250G-M’s frequency response is selectable:
•“Fourth Order Bessel Thomson” gives a response that is typically used
to emulate an optical reference receiver. In this mode, the bandwidth (-
3 dB point) is arbitrarily selectable between 1 GHz and 25 GHz
(depending on the oscilloscope having sufficient bandwidth).
•“Flat” gives a response that is designed to maximize the frequency-
domain flatness and bandwidth of the acquisition system. In this
mode, the bandwidth (-3 dB point) is arbitrarily selectable between 1
GHz and 36 GHz (dependent on the oscilloscope having sufficient
bandwidth).

Optical Wavelength
The optical wavelength of the OE6250G-M can be selected between
830 nm and 1600 nm in increments of 10 nm.
The OE6250G-M is calibrated at 850 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm.
Other wavelength responses are interpolated/extrapolated from the calibrated
values.

Care and Maintenance
Cleaning the Converter Body
Clean only the exterior of the product using a soft cloth moistened with water
or an alcohol solution. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive elements. Under
no circumstances submerge the device or allow moisture to penetrate it.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to clean internal parts. Refer to qualified
service personnel.
Cleaning and Connecting Optical Fibers
CAUTION: Before connecting any fiber-optic cable to a port, inspect the
fiber using a fiber inspection microscope. Failure to do so may result in
permanent damage to the connectors and degradation in
measurements.
If the optical fiber is clean, proceed to connect it to the port. If the fiber is dirty,
clean it as follows:
1. Gently wipe the fiber end with a lint-free swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
2. Use compressed air to dry it completely.
3. Visually inspect the fiber end to ensure its cleanliness.
To safely connect optical fibers:
1. Carefully align the connector and port to prevent the fiber end from
touching the outside of the port or rubbing against other surfaces. If your
connector features a key, ensure that it is fully fitted into the port’s
corresponding notch.
2. Push the connector in so that the fiber-optic cable is firmly in place, thus
ensuring adequate contact. If your connector features a screw sleeve,
tighten the connector enough to firmly maintain the fiber in place.
CAUTION: Do not over tighten, as this will damage the fiber and the
port. If your fiber-optic cable is not properly aligned and/or connected,
you will notice heavy loss and reflection.

Calibration Interval
The recommended calibration interval is one year.
Troubleshooting
Before returning a product as defective, do the following:
•Verify that the Teledyne LeCroy oscilloscope is running firmware v.
8.3.0.7 or higher. To verify the firmware version of your oscilloscope,
choose Utilities > Utilities Setup from the menu bar, then touch the
Status tab.
•Check that the power connector is plugged in and locked, and that the
2.92mm cable is connected.
Service
