General Safety Precautions
This section presents the safety precautions that you must observe while working with
Viva equipment, in the following topics:
❑
Observe Warnings in Product Documentation
❑
Ground the 8860 MSR
❑
Do Not Substitute Parts or Modify Equipment
The safety precautions listed in this section represent warnings associated with certain
dangers of which Tellabs is aware. You, as the user of this product, must observe these
warnings and all other safety precautions necessary to ensure your personal safety as well
as the continued safe operation of the 8820 MSR in your operating environment.
Observe Warnings in Product Documentation
Warning symbols and advisory text are positioned at potentially hazardous procedures in
this manual. When you see these warnings, follow the instructions as well as any other
safety precautions that you deem necessary for installing, operating, and servicing Viva
equipment in your operating environment.
ARNING
Danger! Shock Hazard
Use extreme caution when working around power sources during
installation, operation, testing, and equipment adjustments.
Remove the power at its point of distribution before you connect or
disconnect power leads to the equipment.
Class 1 Laser Product
Class 2 LED Product
Using controls or adjustments, or performing procedures, other than as
specified herein, may result in exposure to hazardous invisible radiation.

Ground the 8860 MSR
To meet safety and EMI requirements and to ensure proper operation, the 8860 MSR must
be adequately grounded before power is connected. Two threaded 5/16-18 UNC studs are
provided on the rear of the chassis for a connection to earth ground. A standard two-hole,
2 AWG lug (Panduit LCD series), and two 5/16-18 UNC nuts are furnished with the
chassis.
To properly ground the 8860 MSR, use a 2 AWG copper grounding cable that is long
enough to connect the nearest earth ground point at the site to the 8860 MSR chassis
ground lug. Crimp the cable to this lug, using the hardware provided with the chassis. The
grounding cable must be able to handle 120 amps of current.
ESD W
ARNING
The 8860 MSR circuit cards can be damaged by static electricity that builds up on
work surfaces and on your body. Static is produced by the everyday movement of
your body, and is released as an Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) when you touch an
object. Observe the following precautions whenever you are working with the 8860
MSR.
•Always wear a grounded wrist strap to prevent ESD damage to the 8860
MSR system components
•Be sure to attach the wrist strap to the ESD ground jack located on the
front panel of the equipment.
CAUTION
The 8860 MSR chassis is heavy. When shipped with module packs and
packing materials, the weight increases substantially. Use safe work
practices whenever unpacking, lifting, or moving a 8860 MSR shelf. Use
guidelines in the manual to determine how many people you need to assist
in positioning and securing a 8860 MSR shelf.
CAUTION
Do not apply power to 8860 MSR equipment until you have completed all
installation procedures provided in this manual.

Do Not Substitute Parts or Modify Equipment
Do not install substitute parts or perform any unauthorized modification of the 8860 MSR
system. Contact your local Tellabs representative for service and repair.
Lithium Battery
Contact Tellabs Advanced Data Products Technical Support to determine if the Lithium
battery is the source of any defective operations on the 8820 MSR, and do not attempt to
change the battery without the assistance of authorized, Tellabs service personnel. Please
see
Table 2-2 on page 6
for contact information.
CAUTION
For centralized DC power connection install only in a restricted access area.
ARNING
Danger! Shock Hazard
Never dismantle a 8860 MSR chassis, or attempt to service 8860 MSR
chassis sub-assemblies without the assistance of Tellabs factory-
authorized service personnel or other qualified maintenance personnel.
CAUTION
Danger! Possible Explosive
An incorrectly replaced Lithium battery may result in explosion. Replace
only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer.
Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2-2 Unpacking and Site Preparation Safety Information
Safety Information
To ensure that you install the 8860 MSR safely, observe the following guidelines:
❑Review the safety information in the Preface of this installation guide, and observe
safety admonishments provided in the notes, cautions, and warnings throughout this
manual.
❑Comply with all applicable industrial safety requirements, practices, and standards.
❑After installing the 8860 MSR, protect your equipment by using an ESD grounding
strap whenever handling system components. Follow proper grounding procedure by
first establishing an earth ground for the 8860 MSR, then attaching a wrist strap to the
ESD jack located on the
System Panel
of the 8860 MSR.
Unpacking the 8860 MSR
The 8860 MSR arrives in at least two crates, one of which contains the 8860 MSR chassis,
and other(s) that contain the Switch Control Card(s) (SCCs), Universal Line Card(s)
(ULCs), and the Physical Line Modules (PLMs).
The section guides you through the unpacking process, in the following topics:
❑
Uncrate and Inspect, on page 2-3
❑
Verify Receipt, on page 2-6
❑
Returning Products to Tellabs, on page 2-6
NOTE
Begin inspecting for damage as soon as your shipment arrives. If you see
damage (such as punctures, damp spots, and crushed corners) at any
point when unpacking and inspecting, do not proceed with the unpacking
instructions in this chapter. Immediately notify the transfer company
about the damage, and record the damage on the bill of lading. Have the
transfer company’s agent acknowledge the damage by signing the bill of
lading under the damage notation.

Uncrate and Inspect
This section describes how to remove the 8860 MSR equipment from the shipping
container, and determine that you have received all expected equipment in the following
sections:
❑
8860 MSR Crate Inspection and Disassembly, on page 2-3
❑
Accessory Box Inspection, on page 2-4
❑
Circuit Pack Crate Inspection and Disassembly, on page 2-5
8860 MSR Crate Inspection and Disassembly
When unpacking the 8860 MSR, you will first disassemble the wood crate, then remove the
chassis from its internal cardboard carton and plastic wrap as shown by the following
steps:
Step 1
Remove the packing list from the plastic envelope mounted on the outside of the
shipping crate. Use this paperwork to validate the contents after the shipping
containers are removed.
Step 2
Disassemble the wood crate.
a.
Unlock each of the nine cam locks located around the perimeter of the front
panel and pull the front panel away from the crate.
b.
Unlock each of the three cam locks located at the bottom rim of the rear panel,
and pull the entire crate away from the pallet and 8860 MSR cardboard carton.
Step 3
Disassemble the cardboard carton.
a.
Remove the top lid and set it aside. You can now see the 8860 MSR accessory
box surrounded by protective foam pads.
b.
Remove the accessory box and foam pads, and set them aside.
NOTE
Do not discard packing materials until you have completed the unpacking
procedures and verified the integrity of your 8860 MSR shipment. You
may need to reuse the packing materials if returning the product to
Tellabs.

Uncrate and Inspect
c.
Place your hands at opposite sides of the cardboard around the 8860 MSR, and
lift the cardboard sleeve up and away from the 8860 MSR chassis. Set the sleeve
aside. You now see that the 8860 MSR is shrouded in plastic wrap.
d.
Remove the plastic wrap and set it aside.
Step 4
Use standard operating procedures (per your site safety guidelines) to carefully lift
the 8860 MSR away from the shipping pallet, and place it on the ground or on a
cart for transport to the installation site.
Accessory Box Inspection
Open the 8860 MSR accessory box to ensure that you have received all items shown in
Table
2-1
.
Use
Figure 2-1
to help you assemble the DC power terminal block on the rear of the 8860
MSR chassis using the items listed in
Table 2-1
. See
Connector and Adapter Pinouts, on page A-18
for more information on connection and adapter pinouts needed to install the 8860 MSR.
