GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheCutlassIIishighperformancemetaldetectorthatiscapableofrejectinggroundmineralizationandburiedmetallic
trashsimultaneously.TheCutlassIIwasdesignedtosatisfytherequirementsoftheserioustreasurehunters,whetherthey
areexperiencedornot.Designemphasiswasplacedonperformanceandeasyofuse,whileminimizingoreliminatingthose
troublesomeadjustmentsandfeaturesthatcouldcausealossofperformanceifnotusedproperly.Theresultisapowerful
lightweightdetectorwhichusesonlytwocontrolstoprovidefullVLFcapabilities.
Theoperationofthedetectorisbasedonmotion,regardlessofwhethertheAllMetalorDiscriminatemodeisselected.
Thismeansthatthesearchcoilmustbemovingslightlytodetectatarget.Themotionrequiredissoslightthatpinpointingis
veryeasy.Theautomaticgroundrejectioncircuitryissettoallowoperationinvirtuallyanymineralizationyoumight
encounter,althoughoperationmaybedifficultinblacksand.
TheCutlassIIisfurnishedwithan7"concentricsearchcoil.Wefeelthatthiscoilwillprovideexcellentperformancein
mostuses,suchascoinshootinginmoderatelytrashyparks,schools,andbeaches.Avarietyofoptionalsearchcoilsare
available,ranginginsizesfrom4"to11".
Aswithanydetector,thefamiliarityoftheuserwiththeinstrumentwillhaveagreatdealtodowithhowsuccessfulthe
treasurehunteris.Werecommendthatyoureadandunderstandthismanualfullybeforeattemptingtousetheinstrumentin

ASSEMBLY
AssemblyoftheCutlassIIisverysimple,andrequiresnospecialtools.Theonlyassemblyrequiredistomountthe
searchcoiltotheendofthelowerstemandinstallthelowerstemandlockassemblytotheupperstem.
1. Depressthetwobuttonsontheupperendofthelowerstem,andslideitintotheupperstem.Pushthelowerstem
upsothatthebuttonsclickintothethirdsetofholesfromtheendoftheupperstem.
2. Insertthepoletipbetweenthemountingearsofthesearchcoil,afterremovingthescrewandthumbnut.Alignthe
holesinthepoletipandthoseinthemountingears.
3. Insertthecoilmountingscrewthroughthecoilandpoletip.Besuretheinternaltoothlockwasherisonthescrew
headside.
4. Installthethumbnutonthescrewandtightenbyhand.
5. Windthesearchcoilcablearoundthepole.Installtheconnectorintheconnectormountedonthecontrolhousing,
andtightenbyhand.
ADJUSTMENT
Thesearchcoilangleandstemlengthshouldbeadjustedsothattheunitisnotuncomfortableortiringafterlongperiods
ofuse.Thestemlengthisadjustedbydepressingthespringbuttonsandextendingorshorteningthepoletilltheyclickinto
theholesthatgiveyouthemostcomfortablesetting.Thecoilshouldbeaboutoneinchabovethegroundwhilestandingerect.
Adjusttheangleofthesearchcoil,sothatthecoilisparalleltotheground.Tightenthesearchcoilthumbnutbyhandto
maintainthissetting.
Thearmrestontherearofthehandlecanbemovedforwardbyremovingthescrewsandnuts,andreinstallingthe
assemblyintothemostforwardsetofholes.

CONTROLS
TheCutlassIIhasonlythreecontrols,twoaremountedonthefrontpanelofthedetector,andoneismountedontherear
panel.
1. POWEROFF,MODESELECT,BATTERYTEST.Thisrotaryswitchcontrolisusedtoselecttheoperatingmode
(eitherallmetalordiscriminate),testtheremainingbatterystrength,andturntheunitoffwhenitisnotbeingused.
Turningtheknobcompletelycounterclockwiseuntilitclicksdisconnectsthebatteriesfromthecircuit.Turningtheknob
completelyclockwiseactivestheaudiobatterytestcircuit,whichwillgiveyouanaudibleindicationofthebatteries'
condition.Freshbatterieswillcausealoudaudioresponse.Asthebatteriesageandbecomeweaker,theinitialaudio
responsewillbeweaker.Whentheresponseisjustashortbuzzinsteadofalongbeep,orwhenthereisnoaudio
response,it'stimefornewbatteries.
ThisrotaryswitchisalsousedtoselecttheAllMetalmodeofoperationortheDiscriminatemode.InAllMetal,the
detectorwillfindnotonlythehighlyconductivenonferrousmetals,butwillalsofindtheferrousmetals.Thismodewould
beidealforrelichuntingorghosttownsearching,sincemanydesirableartifacts(suchasguns)aremadeofironorsteel.
IntheDiscriminatemode,thedetectorsresponsetounwantedtrashcanbecontrolledtoeliminatediggingmuchofthe
commonmetallictrashitemsfoundinlikelyhuntingspots.Thedetectormaybeepbrieflywhentheswitchischanged,
butisreadyforoperationintheselectedmomentinstantly.
2. DISCRIMINATELEVEL.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetector'sresponsetounwantedmetallictrashwhenused
intheDiscriminatemode.Atthelowestsetting"0",thedetectorwilleliminatemostironobjects,butwillstillrespondina
positivemannertolightfoil,bottlecaps,pulltabsandmostothermetallicitems.Astheknobsettingisincreased,
responsetomoreofthesemetallictrashitemsisreversedsothattheseobjectsgivenoresponse.Thecharbelowshows
thecontrolsettingswheresomeofthecommonlyfoundtrashitemscanberejected.
3. STABILITY.Turncontrolclockwiseasfaraspossibleoruntiltheinstrumentjustbeginstochirpintermittently.If
chirpsaretoofrequentforstableoperation,simplyturnthecontrolcounterclockwisejustenoughtocausetheinstrument
tobecomestable.Oncesetthiscontrolshouldnotrequireoftenreadjustingandshouldbeleftalone.
TUNING
SincethemosttroublesomeadjustmentsofstandarddetectorshavebeenautomatedintheCutlassII,thetuning
procedureforthisdetectorissimplyamatterofselectingthedesiredoperatingmode,settingthestabilitylevel,andthe
discriminatelevel.
Iftherearesourcesofelectricalinterferencepresent,oriftheareaisextremelytrashyormineralized,yourdetectormay
givesomefalsesignals.Thesesignalsaregenerallyshortchoppysoundswhichcaneasilybedistinguishedfromagood
targetresponse.
TheDiscriminateLevelshouldbesettoyourdesiredrejectionlevelfortheparticularareayouaresearching.We
recommendstartingatalowsettingifyouareunsureofhowmuchtrashisinthearea.Adjustthelevelupwardifyoufind
yourselfdiggingmoretrashthanyoulike.Rememberthatyouwilllosesmallgoldringsandnickelsatthepulltabrejectlevel,
sodiggingsometrashwillincreaseyournumberofgoodfinds.
SELECTINGTHEPROPERMODEOFOPERATION
TheCutlassIIofferstwooperatingmodes,theAllMetalmodeandtheDiscriminate.Bothofthesemodesaremineral
free,andrequiresthatthesearchcoilbemovingfortargetdetection.Thereisnothresholdsoundpresentasinmostordinary
detectors.
TheAllMetalModewilldetectallmannerofmetallictargets,asthenameimplies.Thismodeisexcellentforrelichunting
orghosttownsearching,asmanyvaluableordesirableartifactsmaybemadeofironorsteel.Thismodeisalsogoodfor
beachhuntingwherethesandallowseasydigging.
TheDiscriminatemodewillallowyoutocontrolthedetectorsresponsetomostofthecommonmetallictrashitemsfound
inmostschools,parks,andbeaches.Thismodeisgenerallyusedforcoinshootingsuchareastoavoidhavingtodigmostof
thiscommontrash.TheDiscriminateLevelcontrolisusedtoadjusttheresponsetothesetrashitems.Eachdetectorcan
varysomewhatduetothemanufacturingtolerances,soyoushouldexperimentwithyourdetectorandbecomefamiliarwith
therejectionlevelsforthesetrashitemswithyourdetector.
Earliermotiondetectorsthatoperatedwith"threshold"soundwouldgivetheuseradefiniteindicationofmetallictrashby
eithernullingcompletelyorbygeneratingshort,choppysounds.SincetheDiscriminatemodeoperateswithoutthreshold
sound,thereisnonullingtoindicatethattheareaisextremelytrashy.WhensearchingintheDiscriminatemode,we
recommendthatyouperiodicallyswitchtoAllMetalandchecktheareayouaresearchingtogetanideaofhowmuchtrash
isreallythere.
FIELDUSE
Thedetectorshouldbeheldinapositionthatiscomfortableforyou.Swingthedetectorfromsidetosideinaboutathree
footarc,overlappingsucceedingstrokeswell.Thismotioniscalleda“sweep.”TheCutlassIIwasdesignedtogetmaximum
depthwithoutthefranticpacerequiredofearliermotiondetectors,sogoatapacethatiscomfortableforyou.Infact,tryingto
hunttoofastinDiscriminatemayevencausealossofdepthinheavilymineralizedlocations.
Itwouldbehelpfultoburysomecoinsandtrashmetaljunkitemsinanareathatyouknowisclearofothermetal
objects,andthentrytheunitinitsvariousmodes.ChecktheareainAllMetalModefirsttobesureitsclearoftrashthen
burythetargetsatleastafootapart,andfrom2to6inchesdeeptostart.Makeamapofthetestbedtobesureyouknow
whateachtargetisandhowdeepitis.Practiceonthesetargetstofamiliarizeyourselfwithyourdetector’stargetresponse.
Thiswillalsohelpyoulearnthepropersweeprateforbestoperation.
Regardlessofwhichmodeyouareusing,trytokeepyoursearchcoilheightconstantandclosetotheground.Most
peopletendtoraisethecoilattheendofasweep,muchlikeapendulum,especiallyiftheyarehurrying.Trytoavoidthis,as
anyincreaseinheightwillcauseacorrespondinglossofdepth.
Inareaswithwellkeptlawns,theeasiestwaytomaintainaconstantsearchcoilheightistoallowthecoiltorestonthe
grassasyousweepfromsidetoside.Inroughandrockyareasitisbestnotto“scrub”thecoilontheground,astherocks
willactlikeabrasives,andwearawaythecoilbottom(anoptionalcoilscuffcoverwillprotectagainstthis.)Sweepthecoilas
closetothegroundaspossiblewithouttouching.Hittingthegroundorrocksmaycauseafalsesignalmuchlikeadesired
targetwould.Sweepingthecoiltoohighabovethegroundresultsinalossofdepth.
WhenoperatingintheDiscriminateMode,some“falsesignals”maybecausedbyheavyconcentrationsoftrashmetal
objects,byverylargetrashitems,orbyelectricalinterference.Thesesignalswillsounddifferentthangoodtargetsignals
becausetheyaregenerallyshort,choppysounds.Attheendofyoursweep,asyouthereversethecoildirection,the
detectorismostsusceptibletotrashinducednoise.Therearetwowaystotellwhetherthesesoundsaregooddeepsignals
ortrash“noise.”Thefirstisbyrepeatability.Trashinducednoiseswillnotberegularasyousweepthecoiloverthesuspected
targetseveraltimes,whereasagoodtargetresponsewillberepeatable.ThesecondmethodistoswitchtoAllMetalMode
andcheckthetargetresponsesound.Iftheresponseisweak,itmaywellbeadeep,goodtarget;butiftheresponseisvery
strong,itisprobablytrash.Notethatacoinclosetothesurfacecangiveadoublebeepsound,butitisregularand
repeatable.Raisingthecoilaninchortwowillrestorethesinglebeeponsurfacetargets.
Ifthereisanydoubtwhetheratargetisgoodornot,DIGIT.Forthissamereason,intheDiscriminateMode,itisbest
nottouseahigherDISCLEVELsettingthannecessary.NickelsandmostsmallerringsarerejectedwhentheDISCLEVEL
issettorejectpulltabsonanymetaldetectorthatisaTRDiscriminatorliketheCutlassII.Ifyoudon’tdiganyjunkatall,
youaresurelypassingupalotofgoodfindsaswell.SettheDISCLEVELonlyhighenoughtosuittheconditionswhereyou
aresearching.
Becausemostdetectorusersarecoinshootersandmostareasarelikelytoyieldgoodcoinsarealsolikelytocontaina
goodlyamountoftrash,theCutlassIIisfurnishedwithan7"searchcoilasstandard.Thiscoilwillprobablyyieldthebest
resultsinmostsuchsituations,andiseasiertopinpointwiththanthelargercoils.Optionalsearchcoilsof4"through11"are
availabletoallowyoutotailortheresponseofyourdetectortosuitotherconditions.
PINPOINTING
Pinpointingatargetisprobablybestaccomplishedby"Xing"thetargetwiththesearchcoil.Rememberthatthedetector
willbeepjustasthetargetpassesthecenterofthesearchcoil.Swingthesearchcoiloverthetargetfromsidetosideand
thenfromfronttobackuntilyoucan"zeroin"ontheexactlocationofthecoilcenterwhenthedetectorbeeps.Slowingthe
sweepspeeddownwillhelpyoupickoutthecenteroftheXbecausethetargetresponsewillbereducedatveryslowspeeds
andit'seasiertocorrelatethesoundwiththecoilcenteratslowerspeeds.
Anothereasymethodistosweepthecoilfromsidetosideacrossthetargetinveryshortsweeps,asyouslowlymove
forwardandbackwardacrossthetarget.Slowdownthesweeprateandshortenthesweepsuntilyoujustbarelygeta
responseatonespot.Thetargetwillbedirectlybelowthecoilcenteratthisresponsetime.
Raisingthesearchcoilcanalsohelppinpointbynarrowingtheresponsetothetarget.Practicepinpointingoften,andyou
willsoonbecomemoreaccurateandfaster.Besuretofillallholesafteryourecoverthetarget.Yourlocaldealershouldbe
abletopointoutthepreferredmethodsofdigginginyourarea.Besuretoprotectyourhobbybyleavingthesitecleanerthan
youfoundit,withalltheholesfilled.
RECOMMENDEDRECOVERYMETHODS
Alwaysobtainpermissionfromthepersoninchargebeforehuntingonprivateproperty,schoolyards,parks,churches,or
stateparks.Evenwhenrelichuntinginthewoods,NEERLEAVEAHOLE!,ordamageanythingontheproperty.
PROTECTYOURHOBBYFILLALLHOLES
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
TheCutlassIIhasanautomaticbatterytestcircuitsothatyoucanalwaysbesureyouaregettingtopperformancefrom
it.Thebatteriesshouldbecheckedafterthedetectorhasbeenonforabout10minutes,andthenperiodicallyasyouare
usingitforlongperiods.Toactivatethebattertestcircuit,simplyturnthedetectoroffmomentarilyandthenbackon.The
detectorshouldbeeploudlyifthebatteriesarefresh.Asthebatteriesage,thissoundlessintense,andfadesoutquicker.
Whenyoujusthearabriefbuzz,ornotaudioatall,replacethebatteries.
Toreplacethebatteries,pullthelargeknobsonthebatterydoorontherearoftheunit.Theentiredoorwillpopout.
Removethebatteriesfromthedetector,andthenremovethebatteriesfromtheclip.Replacethenew9voltbatteriesintothe
clip,observingthepolarityindicators.Slidethebatteriesbackintothedetector,makingsurethatthebatteryclipleadis
connected.Installthebatterydoorflangeintothetopofthecutoutinthechassis,makingsurethattheplungerisstillpulled
out.Thenpushtheplungersbackintolockthedoorinplace.
Shouldyoudesiretodoso,rechargeableNickelCadmiumbatteriescanbesubstitutedforstandard9voltcells.Individual
9voltsizecellsarereadilyavailableatmostelectronicsupplystores,aswellasthechargersforthem,andtheycanbe
insertedintothestandardholderusedinyourCutlassII.Theinitialbatterycheckreadingwillbeslightlylower,butwillnot
dropasmuchwithuse,untilthebatteriesarecompletelydischarged.
GENERALCAREANDUSE
Ifthedetectoristobestoredforalongperiodoftime,itisbesttoremovethebatterypackfromthedetector.Thiswill
preventinternaldamagetothedetectorifthebatteriesshouldleak.
Thesearchcoiliswaterproofandmaybesubmergedineitherfreshorsaltwater.Cautionshouldbeexercisedtoprevent
waterfromenteringthechassis,whereitcoulddamagetheelectroniccircuitry.Afterthecoilisusedinsaltwater,thecoil
andlowerstemassemblyshouldberinsedwellwithfreshwatertopreventcorrosionofthemetalparts.
Thereareseveralgoodbookstohelpthebeginnerlearnhowtousethedetector,wheretosearchandhowtorecovera
targetwithoutdamagingtheenvironment.Agoodcoinshootercanrecoveralotoffindsandleavethearealookingasthough
hehadneverbeenthere.Aboveall,alwaysfillyourholeswhenyouhaverecoveredthetarget.
TESOROMetalDetectorsaresoldthroughindependentdealers,whoarealmostalwaystreasurehuntersthemselves.
Theycanprovideyouwithyoumuchneededinformationabouthowtouseyourdetector,howtoprobe,pluganddiginyour
locale,andanswermostofyourquestionsabouttreasurehuntingingeneral.
Theuseofearphoneswillbenefityouintwoways.Mostearphoneswillveryeffectivelyblockoutmostoftheambient
noise,suchastrafficnoiseandwindnoise,whichwillenableyoutobetterhearthefaintersignalscausedbythedeeper
targets.Obviously,theolder,morevaluablecoinswillprobablybedeeperthantheoneswhichwerelostlastweek,soyou
shouldtakeadvantageofanythingthatwillhelpyouheartheweakersignals.Secondly,usingearphoneswillgreatlyextend
thebatterylife,sinceittakesmuchlesspowertooperatethem.TheCutlassIIisnotequippedwithavolumecontrol,but
doeshavealimitingcircuitintheearphonejack.Iflessvolumeisdesiredwithearphones,youmaywanttouseearphones
withabuiltinvolumecontrol.Anygood8or16ohmsetwith1/4inchstereojackwilldo.
