Use of the product as directed
The Magnet Locator is a measuring device that can be used for the localization of magnets.
Its purpose is to find magnets that have been previously placed into a wall and to mark that spot for drilling. The Magnet
Locator has LED lights that indicate the direction in which the magnet is located. This allows the exact position of the
magnet to be found very quickly. Once the position is found, a flashing LED indicates the depth at which the magnet
is located within the wall.
By using magnets in combination with the Magnet Locator it is possible to bury non-metallic connections, such as fibre
optics, in walls in order to find and uncover them for later use.
The Magnet Locator was developed to detects magnets in walls and not any
other objects such electric cables, water or gas pipes. Iron-containing objects
in the wall can interfere with the measurement. Accordingly, the greatest care
and attention must always be exercised while working.

Measuring principle
According to a patented method (WO 2020/204710
A1), the position and distance of the magnet are
measured via 4 magnetic field sensors. Each magnetic
sensor measures the field strength of the magnet in
three dimensions. The evaluation is independent of the
orientation (north or south pole) of the magnet.
The vertical distance to the magnet is determined by
the angles of the field vectors and is independent of
the field strength. The distance is indicated by a
flashing signal lamp.

Optionally, the device can be operated with an external measuring head.

Operation
On the front label of the Magnet Locator is a quick
guide that summarizes the operating steps (Figure 1 –
No 4).
Figure 4: quick guide on the front label
Inserting the batteries
1- Remove the batteries from the packaging and insert them in the device.
2- Check that the battery terminals are positioned correctly as shown on the label in the battery compartment (Figure
2 No. 7).
Do not use damaged batteries.
Disposal of batteries as municipal waste is not permissible.
Switching the Magnet Locator On and Off
Press the on/off button (Figure 1 No. 2).
The Magnet Locator automatically turns off after 2 minutes idle time.
Calibration through zero-adjustment
The Magnet Locator performs a zero adjustment after
each power-up to compensate for disturbances and
contributions, such as the earth's magnetic field.
During this process, all LEDs blink slowly for a few
seconds.
Hold the Magnet Locator in open space at the position
in which you want to measure later and switch it on
Figure 5: State of the front label during the calibration
For a measurement on a wall, hold the Magnet Locator vertically.
For a measurement on the ceiling, hold it horizontally above the head, etc.

Spinnerstraat 15 | P.O. Box 6 | 7481 KJ Haaksbergen | the Netherlands | Phone: +31(0)53 573 22 55 | Email: info@tkf-telecom.eu 6/14

After a successful calibration, the LED lights will
circulate and the Magnet Locator is ready
for use.
Figure 6: Front label with circulating LEDs
Finding the magnet position
Place the Magnet Locator on the surface where the
magnet is suspected. If the LEDs stop circulating, you
are close to a magnet. One or more LEDs will light up
on one side, indicating the direction in which the
magnet is located. Move the Magnet Locator slowly in
the indicated direction.
Figure 7: Moving the Magnet Locator towards the magnet, indicated by the
glowing LED
The Magnet Locator was developed to detects magnets in walls and not any
other objects such electric cables, water or gas pipes. Iron-containing objects
in the wall can interfere with the measurement. Accordingly, the greatest care
and attention must always be exercised while working.
The intention is to bring the central axis of the marking
hole directly above the magnet axis. If both axes are
above each other, all LEDs light up. Mark this position
with a pen through the marking hole
Figure 8: At the position of the magnet, all LEDs are glowing
Never drill directly through the Magnet Locator with a machine. Slipping off
can lead to the destruction of the sensors.

Measure the depth of the magnet
If the magnet is located at a depth of 35 –70 mm
inside the wall, one LED will start flashing after the
magnet has been found. The flashing LED indicates
how deep the magnet is in the wall according to the
label on the Magnet Locator.
The measurement depends on the dimension of the
magnet. The calculation is optimized for a long
cylindrical magnet with a diameter of 8 mm. The
accuracy of this measurement is then ±5 mm.
Figure 9: The flashing LED indicates the depth of the magnet within the wall
Iron parts in the wall or the orientation of the magnet within the wall can falsify
this value. The magnetic axis and the magnetic pole should be perpendicular
to the wall surface.
Using the external measurement module
By attaching the external measuring module, the
integrated sensor unit of the Magnet Locator is not
used anymore. Instead, the LEDs on the Magnet
Locator are related to the sensor unit in the external
housing.
The measurement procedure is basically the same as
in section 3.3 –3.5, except that the measurement
module must be held against the wall instead of the
Magnet Locator.

indicated by the glowing LED

Locator

Care and maintenance
Cleaning and drying
Use only a clean, soft cloth for cleaning. If necessary, moisten the cloth slightly with pure alcohol or a little water.
Do not use any other liquids as these may damage the plastic components.
Storage
Remove the batteries from the device before storing it for a long period. Leaking batteries may damage the device.
Observe the temperature limits when storing your equipment, especially in winter / summer if the equipment is kept inside a
motor vehicle (-40°C to +60°C).
Transport
Use the supplied suitcase or packaging of equivalent quality for transporting or shipping your equipment.
Always remove the batteries before shipping the device.
