WARNING

Humidity
For a superior and consistent sonic performance, considerab e care has been taken in the manufacture of THE
ROCK to ensure that the cabinet is acoustica y sea ed. However, as with any e ectrica equipment, shou d you
move THE ROCK from a co d environment into a warm room, condensation may form on the components
inside. To avoid damaging the product p ease a ow it to reach room temperature before operation.
U packi g & ha dli g
Care shou d be taken when removing THE ROCK from its carton.
The speaker cone (diaphragm and surround) is a de icate component. Do not touch at any time.
Liste i g levels
THE ROCK is capab e of sound pressure eve s (SPL's) in excess of 105dB. Avoid istening at sustained high
eve s, as this may cause:
• permanent hearing damage
• the speaker to overheat, eading to a fire hazard.
THE ROCK User Manua 4 v0312
CAUTION

Running in
Speaker drivers contain moving parts. It is recognised to be good practice to run in new speakers prior to
norma use for improved bass extension, sweeter highs and a smoother performance overa . This process is
a so referred to as 'breaking in' or 'burning in'.
We recommend a run-in period of at east 12 hours (or overnight); idea y onger.
Having observed the warnings on page 3 of the manua , connect an audio p ayback device (CD, MP3 p ayer,
etc.) to THE ROCK speaker(s). P ace the p ayback device in oop mode and p ay dynamic music through THE
ROCKs at a moderate eve ; enough to drive (move) the speaker diaphragm a reasonab e amount.
Power
THE ROCK vo tage is factory set. Options are:
An arrow on the vo tage setting abe (see p. 7) indicates the vo tage setting of THE ROCK.
IMPORTANT: ensure that THE ROCK is set to the correct vo tage for your region. Vo tage settings must be
set by the factory and cannot be switched by the user. If THE ROCK is set to the incorrect vo tage for your
region, contact Unity Audio. DO NOT power it up!

Positioning
THE ROCK drive unit contains a powerfu magnet. P ease do not position within 1 metre of a cathode ray
tube (CRT) te evision or disp ay monitor.
For best resu ts, THE ROCK shou d be p aced on a sturdy speaker stand such as the Unity Audio THE
MONOLITH.
If eft untreated, room acoustics (room modes) can serious y affect the accuracy of audio reproduction,
especia y at ower frequencies. The fo owing guidance is here to he p minimise the effects of any untreated
room acoustic prob ems.
THE ROCK is designed as a near fie d studio monitor and shou d therefore be positioned, idea y, between
0.75 and 2 metres from the istener. A stereo pair of ROCK monitors shou d be equidistant from the istener
and between 1.5 and 1.8 metres apart, p aced upright and directed toward the istener with the tweeter at
around ear eve . Sma adjustments to the speaker p acement and/or their ang e to the istener, and/or the
istener's seating position, wi he p the istener ocate the audio 'sweet spot', i.e. a strong centra audio 'image'.
Each monitor shou d a so be equidistant from side wa s and not too c ose to any wa or other ref ective
surface, or the corners of the room. Again, since room modes can inf uence what you hear in many ways, some
experimentation may be needed to find the optimum speaker p acement. Neverthe ess, measures shou d be
taken to remove any acoustic anoma ies caused by the room.
The fo owing diagram is a guide for optimum 5.1 surround speaker p acement.
