WARRANTY
Valmetal Incorporated (Valmetal) warrants new Self propelled bedding chopper to be free from defects in material
and workmanship, under normal use and service. Obligation under this warranty shall extend for a period of 1 year
(12 months) following the date of delivery to the original purchaser and shall be limited to replacement or repair at
Valmetal’s choice of any parts found to be defective upon inspection by Valmetal.
WARRANTY CLAIMS
The purchaser claiming under this warranty shall submit a warranty claim in the prescribed form to Valmetal or an
Authorized Dealer, for inspection by an authorized company representative.
LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY
This warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied and all other obligations or liabilities on
Valmetal’s part of any kind or character, including liabilities for alleged representations or negligence. We neither
assume nor authorize any other person to assume on our behalf, any liability in connection with the subsequent sale
of the Bedding chopper.
This warranty shall not apply to any Bedding chopper which has been altered outside the factory in any way if,
according to Valmetal, the alterations affected the Bedding chopper operation and reliability, or if the Chopper has
been subject to misuse or accident.
This warranty does not apply to parts that are under warranty by the original manufacturer and for which service can
be obtained directly through authorized service centers. No warranty is extended to regular service items such as
knives, v-belts, lubricants, paint and the like.

further acknowledges that Valmetal does not assume any liability resulting from the operation of the Bedding chopper
in any manner other than described in the Operator’s Manual supplied at the time of purchase.

SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your choice of a ValMetal Self propelled bedding chopper to complement your farming
operation. This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet the needs of a discerning livestock
industry.
Safe, efficient and trouble free operation of your ValMetal Bedding chopper requires that you and anyone
else who will be operating or maintaining the Chopper, read and understand the Safety, Operation and
Maintenance informations contained in the Operator's Manual.
This manual covers the Models 01A99-0200 manufactured by ValMetal.
Keep this manual handy for frequent reference and to pass on to new operators or owners. Call your
ValMetal Dealer or Distributor if you need assistance or information.
OPERATOR ORIENTATION - The directions left, right, front and rear, as mentioned throughout this manual,
are as seen from behind the guide bar and facing in the direction of the Chopper.

IMPORTANT
YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation and
maintenance of your ValMetal Self propelled bedding
chopper. YOU must ensure that you and anyone
else who is going to operate, maintain or work
around the machine be familiar with the operating
and maintenance procedures and related SAFETY
information contained in this manual.
Remember, YOU are the key to safety. Good safety
practices not only protect you but also the people
around you. Make these practices a working part of
your safety program. Be certain that EVERYONE
operating this equipment is familiar with the recom-
mended operating and maintenance procedures and
follows all the safety precautions. Most accidents
can be prevented. Do not risk injury or death by
ignoring good safety practices.
Bedding chopper owners must give operating
instructions to operators or employees before allow-
ing them to operate the machine, and at least annu-
ally thereafter per OSHA regulation 1928.57.
The most important safety device on this equipment
is a SAFE operator. It is the operator's responsibility
to read and understand ALL Safety and Operating
instructions in the manual and to follow these. All
accidents can be avoided.
A person who has not read and understood all oper-
ating and safety instructions is not qualified to oper-
ate the machine. An untrained operator exposes
himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or
death.
Do not modify the equipment in any way.
Unauthorized modification may impair the function
and/or safety and could affect the Iife of the machine.

2.1 GENERAL SAFETY
1 . Read and understand the Operator's Manual and
all safety signs before operating, maintaining or
adjusting the Bedding chopper.
2. Have a first-aid kit available
for use should the need
arise and know how to use it.
3. Have a fire extinguisher
available for use should
the need arise and know
how to use it.
4. Wear appropriate protective gear. This list
includes but is not limited to:
- A hard hat
- Protective shoes with slip resistant soles
- Protective glasses or goggles
- Heavy gloves
- Wet weather gear
- Hearing protection
- Respirator or filter mask
5. Install and secure all guards before starting.
6. Wear appropriate ear protection
for prolonged exposure to excessive
noise.
7. Do not allow riders.
8. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub
rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage
rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait
for all moving parts to stop before servicing,
maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.
9. Clear the area of people, especially small chil-
dren, before starting the unit.
10. Review safety related items annually with all per-
sonnel who will be operating or maintaining the
Bedding chopper.

2.2 OPERATING SAFETY
1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and
all safety signs before operating, servicing,
adjusting, repairing, unplugging or filling.
2. Do not allow riders.
3. Install and secure all guards and shields before
starting or operating.
4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from
moving parts.
5. Never climb into the Chopper tub or place hands
in any opening when the engine is running.
6. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub
rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage
rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait
for all moving parts to stop before servicing,
maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.
7. Place all controls in neutral before starting.
8. Operate machine only while standing behing
guiding bar.
9. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small
children, before starting.
10. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refuel-
ing.
11. Do not smoke while refueling. Do not allow oth-
ers to smoke.
12. Never operate the machine inside a closed build-
ing unless it has adequate ventilation.
13. Do not reach into tub while the engine is running
even if rotor is not activated.
14. Make sure all hydraulic components are tight, not
damaged and free of leaks before using.
15. Review safety instructions with all operators
annually.
2.3 MAINTENANCE SAFETY
1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safe-
ty information in the manual.
2. Support the machine with blocks or safety stands
when changing tires or working beneath it.
3. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub
rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage
rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait
for all moving parts to stop before servicing,
maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.
4. Follow good Shop Practices
- Keep service area clean
and dry.
- Be sure electrical outlets and
tools are properly grounded
- Use adequate light for the
job at hand
5. Remove wire from spark plug before working on
machine.
6. Do not adjust drive belts when the engine is run-
ning.
7. Make sure all guards and access doors are in
place and properly secured when maintenance
work is completed.
8. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from
moving and/or rotating parts.
9. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothing
when working around or on any of the drive sys-
tem components.
10. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small
children, when carrying out any maintenance and
repairs or making any adjustments.
11. Be careful when working around or maintaining
high-pressure hydraulic system. Wear proper
eye and hand protection when searching for a
high-pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece of
wood or cardboard as a back-stop when search-
ing for a pin hole leak in a hose or steel line.
12. Seek immediate medical attention if a high-pres-
sure stream of hydraulic fluid pierces the skin, as
toxic reaction and infection could develop.
13. Wear heavy canvas or leather gloves when
working with the rotor or knives.

2.4 HYDRAULIC SAFETY
1. Make sure that all components in the hydraulic
system are kept in good condition and are clean.
2. Replace any worn, cut, abraded, flattened or
crimped hoses and steel lines.
3. Before applying pressure to the system, make
sure all components are tight and that lines,
hoses and couplings are not damaged.
4. Do not attempt any makeshift repairs to the
hydraulic lines, fittings or hoses by using tape,
clamps or cements. The hydraulic system oper-
ates under extremely high-pressure. Such
repairs will fail suddenly and create a hazardous
and unsafe condition.
5. Wear proper hand and eye
protection when searching
for a high pressure hydraulic
leak.
Use a piece of wood or
cardboard as a backstop
instead of hands to isolate
and identify a leak.
6. If injured by a concentrated high-pressure stream
of hydraulic fluid, seek medical attention immedi-
ately. Serious infection or toxic reaction can
develop from hydraulic fluid piercing the skin sur-
face.
2.5 BATTERY SAFETY
1. Keep all sparks and flames away from batteries,
as gas given off by electrolyte is explosive.
2. Avoid contact with battery electrolyte; wash off
any spilled electrolyte immediately.
3. Wear safety glasses when working near batter-
ies.
4. Do not tip batteries more than 45 degrees to
avoid electrolyte loss.
5. To avoid injury from sparks or short circuit, dis-
connect battery ground cable before servicing
any part of electrical system.
2.6 TIRE SAFETY
1. Failure to follow proper procedures when mount-
ing a tire on a wheel or rim can produce an
explosion which may result in serious injury or
death.
2. Do not attempt to mount a tire unless you have
the proper equipment and experience to do the
job.
3. Have a qualified tire dealer or repair service per-
form required tire maintenance.
2.7 REFUELING SAFETY
1. Handle fuel with care. It is highly flammable.
2. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refuel-
ing. Clean up spilled fuel before restarting
engine.
3. Do not refuel the machine
while smoking or when
near open flame or sparks.
4. Fill fuel tank outdoors.
5. Prevent fires by keeping machine clean of accu-
mulated trash, grease or debris.
2.8 STORAGE SAFETY
1. Store The Chopper on a firm, level surface.
2. Store the Chopper in an area away from human
activity.
3. Do not permit children to play on or around the
stored machine.
4. Make sure the unit is sitting, or blocked up firm
and solid and will not tip or sink into a soft area.
5. Cover with a weather-proof tarpaulin and tie
down securely.

HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDE HAZARD
Relieve pressure on systeme before repairing or adjusting.
Wear proper hand and eye protection when searching for
leaks. Use wood or cardboard instead of hands.
Keep all compenents in good repair.

2.9 SAFETY DECALS
1. Keep safety decals and signs clean and readable
at all times.
2. Replace safety decals and signs that are missing
or have become illegible.
3. Replaced parts that displayed a safety sign
should also display the current sign.
4. Safety decals or signs are available from your
Dealer Parts Department or the factory.
How to install Safety DecaIs :
* Be sure that the installation area is clean and
dry.
* Decide on the exact position before you remove
the backing paper.
* Remove the smallest portion of the split backing
paper.
* Align the decal over the specified area and care-
fully press the small portion with the exposed
sticky backing in place.
* Slowly peel back the remaining paper and care-
fully smooth the remaining portion of the decal in
place.
*Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and
smoothed out using the piece of decal backing
paper.

2.10 SIGN-OFF FORM
ValMetal inc. follows the general Safety Standards specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Anyone who will be operating and/or main-
taining the Self propelled bedding chopper must read and clearly understand ALL Safety, Operating and
Maintenance information presented in this manual.
Do not operate or allow anyone else to operate this equipment until such information has been reviewed.
Annually review this information.
Make these periodic reviews of SAFETY and OPERATION a standard practice for all of your equipment.
We feel that an untrained operator is unqualified to operate this machine.
A sign-off sheet is provided for your record keeping to show that all personnel who will be working with the
equipment have read and understand the information in the Operator's Manual and have been instructed in
the operation of the equipment.

SECTION 3 SAFETY DECALS LOCATION
The types of decals and locations on the equipment are shown in the illustration below. Good safety requires
that you familiarize yourself with the various Safety Decals, the type of warning and the area, particular func-
tion related to that area, that requires your SAFETY AWARENESS.

4.1 TO THE NEW OPERATOR
OR OWNER
It is the responsibility of the owner or operator to
read this manual and to train all other operators
before they start working with the machine.
Follow all safety instructions exactly. Safety is
everyone's business. By following recommended
procedures, a safe working environments is pro-
vided for the operator, bystanders and the area
around the worksite. Untrained operators are not
qualified to operate this machine.
Many features incorporated into this machine are the
result of suggestions made by customers like you.
Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate the
machine safely and how to set it to provide maximum
efficiency. By following the operating instructions in
conjunction with a good maintenance program, your
Self propelled bedding chopper will provide many
years of trouble-free service.
SECTION 4 OPERATION
OPERATING SAFETY
1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and
all safety signs before operating, servicing, adjust-
ing, repairing, unplugging or filling.
2. The engagement / disengagement of the rotor
rotation is made by tensionning or loosening the
two rotor v-belts. Be very carefull, this is not a
positive clutch system and it might happen that
the rotor continue to turn even when the tension
on the belts is released and the belts are loose.
Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor hous-
ing while motor is running. Always stop engine
and wait for all moving parts to stop before servic-
ing, adjusting or unplugging.
3. Do not allow riders.
4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from
moving parts.
5. Do not smoke when refueling.
6. Never operate the machine inside a closed build-
ing unless there is adequate ventilation.
7. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small
children, before starting.
8. Install and secure all guards and shields before
starting or operating.
9. Run machine only while standing behind the
guide bar at the operator's position.
10. Place all controls in neutral before starting.
11. Release direction/speed control, disengage tub
rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor,
stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all
moving parts to stop before servicing, maintain-
ing, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.
12. Keep all hydraulic lines, fittings and couplers tight

4.3 BREAK-IN
Although there are no operational restrictions on the
machine when used for the first time, it is recom-
mended that the following mechanical items be
checked:
A. Before starting:
1. Read the Operators Manual and all safety
decal before starting.
B. After operating for 1 hour:
1. Retorque all wheel bolts and axle nuts.
2. Check the air pressure in the tires. Add if
required.
3. Check alignment of the pulleys. Align as
required.
4. Retorque all other fasteners and hardware.
C. After operating for 10 hours:
1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 listed before.
(Section B).
2. Check tension of all belts. Adjust if required.
3. Change the engine oil.
4. Then go to the normal service schedule as
defined in the Maintenance section.
4.4 PRE-OPERATION CHECK
LIST
Efficient and safe operation of the ValMetal Self pro-
pelled bedding chopper requires that each operator
reads and understands the operating procedures and
all related safety precautions outlined in this section.
A pre-operation checklist is provided for the operator.
It is important to follow this checklist in order to ensure
personal safety and the good mechanical condition of
the machine.
Before operating the Bedding chopper and each time
thereafter, the following areas should be checked off:
1. Lubricate the machine according to the schedule
outlined in the Maintenance Section.
2. Check engine oil level. Add as required.
3. Check hydraulic fluid level. Add as required.
4. Check tension and alignment of all belts and pul-
leys. Tension or align as required.
5. Check that all bearings turn freely. Replace any
that are rough or siezed.
6. Check the grate and rotor. Remove any twine,
wire or other material that has become entan-
gled.
7. Check the condition of the knives on the rotor.
Repair or replace any bent or broken sections.
8. Ensure that the tires are inflated to the specified
pressure.
9. Check that all hydraulic fittings and connections
are tight and in good condition.
10. Be sure all guards and shields are in place,
secured and functioning as intended.
11. Clean all straw, chaff and debris from machine.

4.5 CONTROLS
All controls are conveniently positioned next to
where the operator would stand when running the
machine. Review this section to familiarize yourself
with the location and function of each control.
1. Tub Rotation Control: Located on the left cor-
ner of the machine. Move the control lever to
the left in a clockwise motion to engage the tub
rotation drive. Move the control right in a
counter-clockwise direction to disengage the
drive.
2. Grate Height Control: Two intermeshing
levers, located in the center next to the rotating
tub, control the height of the grate over the
knives. Position the levers in their lowest slot to
lift the grate and stop the shredding process.
Position the levers in their top slot to lower the
grate to allow the material in the tub into the
knives for shredding.
3. Rotor Drive Control: The control lever to
engage the rotor drive is located on the center of
the frame under the guide bar. Move the lever
up to engage the rotor drive. Move the lever
down to disengage the drive.
4. Gas engine Controls: (see figure 5)
A. Engine Stop Switch: Turn the switch clock-
wise to turn the engine ON. Turn the switch
counter-clockwise to turn the engine OFF.
B. Fuel Shut Off: Mover the lower sliding control
to the left to shut off the fuel supply to the
engine. Move the lever to the right to open
the fuel supply.

Always shut off fuel valve after turning off engine

CAUTION
The engagement / disengagement of the rotor
rotation is made by tensionning or loosening the
two rotor v-belts. This is made with the help of a
lever located above the steering wheel (lift to
engage, lower to release).
Be very carefull, this is not a positive clutch sys-
tem and it might happen that the rotor continue to
turn even when the tension on the belts is
released and the belts are loose.
Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor hous-
ing while motor is running. Always stop engine
and wait for all moving parts to stop before servic-
ing, adjusting or unplugging.

C. Choke: Move the top sliding control to the
left to close the choke for starting when
engine is cold. Move the control to the right
as engine warms to open choke.
D. Throttle: Move the throttle to the right to run
the engine at low RPM. Move the control to
the left to increase engine RPM.
E. Rope Pull for starting: Located on right side
of engine flywheel. Pull sharply when starting
engine.
6. Material Outlet Doors: Two outlet doors on the
left side control the flow of material out of the
machine. The door is normally raised all the
way to allow 1/2 the material to be distributed
over a wide area. The other door is opened part
way to distribute 1/2 the material next to the
machine. See figures 6 and 10.
4. Direction/Speed Control: A self-contained
hydrostatic system controls the speed and direc-
tion of the Bedding chopper. A lever, located on
the guide bar control the hydrostatic system.
a. Pressing the lever forward produces a for-
ward motion. Pressing it further increases
forward speed.
b. Pressing the lever backward produces a
reverse direction. Pressing it further increa-
ses the speed in reverse.

4.6 OPERATING
The Valmetal Self propelled bedding chopper can
quickly and efficiently shred compacted bulk material
to distribute and spred evenly over a surface. When
using the machine, follow these procedures:
IMPORTANT!
New operators or people who have not operated the
unit for a period of time should review the location and
function of all controls before starting. It is recom-
mended that they move the machine to a large open
area and practice operating. This practice will famil-
iarize them with the controls of the machine.
1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small
children, before starting.
2. Review and follow the Pre-Operation Checklist
(see Section 4.4).
3. Do not operate the machine in a closed building
unless there is adequate ventilation.
4. Be sure that all guards and access doors are in
place and secured before starting.
5. Do not climb into the tub or place hands in any
opening when the engine is running.
6. Be sure that the tub rotation and knife drive con-
trols are disengaged and the tub grate is in its
highest position.
7. Place a bale into the tub (figure 8 and 9).
8. Remove the strings and dispose of them away
from the machine and working area.
9. If required, load up to 2 other bales.
10. Starting engine
a. Turn the switch to the ON position.
b. Open the fuel supply valve.
c. Move the throttle into its mid-range position.
d. Close the choke if the engine is cold or if the
unit has not been run for a while.
e. Pull sharply on the starter rope to start the
engine or turn the ignition switch to the
START position.
f. Gradually open the choke as the engine
warms to operating temperature.
g. Open the throttle to provide maximum power
and RPM when operating.
11. Use the direction/speed lever and maneuver the
machine into position.
Attention: Use care when driving over ruts,
bumps or rough ground. Since the machine has
a 3 point stance, it can tip rather easily if travelling
too fast. Drive slow!
Do not drive the machine across a slope. Always
drive directly up or down to prevent tipping.
WARNING
Never attempt to remove strings while the
engine is running. If the strings get caught in
the knives, you could easily be pulled into the
tub before you can let go!

12. Open a material outlet door (figure 12) 1/2 way
and the other all the way open. Adjust them to
give the required distribution pattern and cover-
age.
13. Move the knife control lever up to engage the
knife drive.
14. Set the grate control levers to give the desired
material feed rate. It is recommended that a slow
feed rate be used to provide good control over the
shredding and distributing of material.
15. Engage the tub rotation control. The vanes inside
the tub will turn the bale and feed the material into
the rotating knives. (figure 11)
16. Move the machine past the area to be covered.
17. By varying the material feed rate and how fast the
operator moves the machine, a thick or thin layer
of bedding can be distributed. With a little prac-
tice, the operator will quickly learn what rates give
the best coverage.
18. At the highest feed rate, the machine can shred
and distribute a bale in about a minute. Be sure
you are aware of how thick you wish to distribute.
This machine can lay down a thick layer very
quickly.
19. When the bales in the tub are used up, place all
controls in neutral, raise the grate and shut off the
engine.
20. Add other bales into the tub.
21. Repeat steps 6 through 19 to distribute the bale.
