TECHNICAL INFORMATION
POWER RATINGS: The power ratings for an individual
engine model are initially developed y starting with SAE
(Society of Automotive Engineers) code J1940 (Small
Engine Power & Torque Rating Procedure) (Revision
2002Ć05). Given oth the wide array of products on which
our engines are placed, and the variety of environmental
issues applica le to operating the equipment, it may e
that the engine you have purchased will not develop the
rated horsepower when used in a piece of power equipĆ
ment (actual onĆsite" power). This difference is due to a
variety of factors including, ut not limited to, the following:
differences in altitude, temperature, arometric pressure,
humidity, fuel, engine lu rication, maximum governed
engine speed, individual engine to engine varia ility,
design of the particular piece of power equipment, the
manner in which the engine is operated, engine runĆin to
reduce friction and clean out of com ustion cham ers,
adjustments to the valves and car uretor, and other
factors. The power ratings may also e adjusted ased on
comparisons to other similar engines utilized in similar
applications, and will therefore not necessarily match the
values derived using the foregoing codes.
GENERAL INFORMATION
This is a twin cylinder, overhead valve (OHV), airĆcooled
engine. It is a low emissions engine.
In the state of California, Model Series 540000 and 610000
engines are certified y the California Air Resources Board
to meet emissions standards for 1000 hours. Such
certification does not grant the purchaser, owner or
operator of this engine any additional warranties with
respect to the performance or operational life of this
engine. This engine is warranted solely according to the
product and emissions warranties stated elsewhere in this
manual.

should not exceed 85% of rated horsepower. Engine power will
decrease 3Ć1/2% for each 1,000 feet (300 meters) a ove sea

Engine will operate satisfactorily at an angle up to 25°.

for the equipment on which your engine is placed.

WHEN ADDING FUEL
•Turn engine OFF and let engine cool at least 2
minutes efore removing gas cap.
•Fill fuel tank outdoors or in wellĆventilated area.
•Do not overfill fuel tank. Fill tank to approximately
1Ć1/2 inches elow top of neck to allow for fuel
expansion.
•Keep gasoline away from sparks, open flames,
pilot lights, heat, and other ignition sources.
•Check fuel lines, tank, cap, and fittings frequently
for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary.
WHEN STARTING ENGINE
•Make sure spark plug, muffler, fuel cap and air
cleaner are in place.
•Do not crank engine with spark plug removed.
•If fuel spills, wait until it evaporates efore starting
engine.
•If engine floods, set choke to OPEN/RUN position,
place throttle in FAST and crank until engine starts.
WHEN OPERATING EQUIPMENT
•Do not tip engine or equipment at angle which
causes gasoline to spill.
•Do not choke car uretor to stop engine.
WHEN TRANSPORTING EQUIPMENT
•Transport with fuel tank EMPTY or with fuel shutĆoff
valve OFF.
•On NATURAL / LIQUID PETROLEUM (LP) GAS
engines transport with fuel cylinder empty or valve
closed, or tank disconnected.
WHEN STORING FUEL OR EQUIPMENT WITH
FUEL IN TANK
•Store away from furnaces, stoves, water heaters or
other appliances that have pilot light or other
ignition source ecause they can ignite gasoline
vapors.
Wear eye protection when doing repair
work.
Frost ite can result from skin/eye conĆ
tact with leaking LP liquid.
•Installation, adjustment and repair work should e
done y a qualified technician.
•Flexi le supply lines should e checked regularly to
make sure they are in good condition. Replace
damaged or leaking components.
WARNING
IF YOU SMELL GAS:
•DO NOT start the engine.
•DO NOT actuate any electrical switches.
•DO NOT use the phone in the vicinity.
•Evacuate the area.
•Contact the gas supplier or fire department.
REMEMBER:
•LPG vapor is heavier than air and trends to collect
in low areas. NG vapor is lighter than air and tends
to collect in high areas. Both may travel to remote
locations.
•Keep all flames, sparks, pilot lights, and other
ignition sources away from the area where the
engine is operated or repaired.
•DO NOT smoke when operating or repairing the
engine.
•DO NOT store gasoline or other flamma le vapors
or liquids in the vicinity of the engine.
•BEFORE doing any service work to the engine,
shut off the gas supply.
•After initial installation or servicing, check for gas
leaks. DO NOT use an open flame. Apply very
soapy water or leak test solution with a rush and
look for u les.
•Keep the equipment and the area surrounding the
engine free of de ris.
•Install the fuel system according to applica le
fuel/gas codes.
Gaseous fuels are extremely
flamma le and readily form
explosive airĆvapor mixtures at
am ient temperatures.
WARNING
•Operate equipment with guards in place.
•Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
•Tie up long hair and remove jewelry.
•Do not wear looseĆfitting clothing, dangling
drawstrings or items that could ecome caught.
WARNING
Rotating parts can contact or entangle
hands, feet, hair, clothing, or
accessories.
Traumatic amputation or severe lacĆ
eration can result.
•Start and run engine outdoors.
•Do not start or run engine in enclosed area, even if
doors or windows are open.
WARNING
Engines give off car on monoxide, an
odorless, colorless, poison gas.
Breathing car on monoxide can
cause nausea, fainting or death.
•Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool
efore touching.
•Remove accumulated com usti les from muffler
area and cylinder area.
•Install and maintain in working order a spark
arrester efore using equipment on forestĆcovĆ
ered, grassĆcovered, rushĆcovered unimproved
land. The state of California requires this (Section
4442 of the California Pu lic Resources Code).
Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws
apply on federal land.
WARNING
Running engines produce heat. Engine
parts, especially muffler, ecome exĆ
tremely hot.
Severe thermal urns can occur on
contact.

BEFORE PERFORMING ADJUSTMENTS OR
REPAIRS
•Disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away from
spark plug.
•Disconnect attery at negative terminal (only
engines with electric start).
WHEN TESTING FOR SPARK
•Use approved spark plug tester.
•Do not check for spark with spark plug removed.
WARNING
Unintentional sparking can result in
fire or electric shock.
Unintentional startĆup can result in
entanglement, traumatic amputation,
or laceration.
OIL RECOMMENDATIONS
CAUTION: This engine is shipped from Briggs &
Stratton wi hou oil. Check oil level efore starting
engine. If you start the engine without oil, the
engine will e damaged eyond repair and will not
e covered under warranty.
Oil capaci y is a out 2.3 liter (80 ounces)*
*Approximate amount when changing oil and filter.
Type of Oil o use
•Use a high quality detergent oil classified For Service
SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher such as Briggs & Stratton 30,
Part Num er 100005 (20 oz) or 100028 (48 oz).
•Use no special additives with recommended oils.
•Do not mix oil with gasoline.
•Choose the SAE viscosity grade of oil from this chart that
matches the starting temperature anticipated efore the
next oil change.

* CAUTION: The use of nonĆsynthetic multiĆviscosity
oils (5WĆ30, 10WĆ30, etc.) in temperatures a ove 40° F
(4°ĂC) will result in higher than normal oil consumption.
When using a multiĆviscosity oil, check oil level more
frequently.
** CAUTION: Use of SAE 30 oil elow 40° F (4° C) will
result in hard starting and possi le engine damage due
to inadequate lu rication.

CHECKING AND ADDING OIL

•Check oil level before starting the engine.
•Check level daily, or after every eight (8) hours .
•Keep oil level at FULL .
•Do not overfill.
Oil filling procedure:
1. First add 2 liters (67 ounces).
2. Start and run engine at idle for 30 seconds. See Starting
Instructions.
3. Shut engine off and wait 30 seconds.
4. Then add more oil slowly to ring level to Full mark on
dipstick.
Oil checking procedure:
1. Place engine level. Clean around oil fill and dipstick .
2. Remove dipstick and wipe clean with cloth.
3. Then push dipstick ack in and remove to check oil level.
Oil should e at FULL line on dipstick .
4. If oil is needed, add slowly.
5. Fill to FULL line on dipstick - recheck.
6. Replace dipstick firmly.
FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS
Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a
minimum of 85 octane. Fresh fuel prevents gum from
forming in the fuel system or on essential car uretor parts.
Purchase fuel in quantity that can e used within 30 days.
•Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol.
•Do not mix oil with gasoline.
•For engine protection use Briggs & Stratton Gasoline
Additive availa le from your Authorized Briggs &
Stratton Dealer (P/N 5041 or single use pouch).
This engine is certified to operate on gasoline. Exhaust
Emission Control System: EM (Engine Modifications).
CAUTION:
Some fuels, called oxygenated or reformulated
gasoline, are gasoline lended with alcohols or
ethers. Excessive amounts of these lendscan
damage the fuel system or cause perforĆ
mancepro lems. If any undesira le operating
symptoms occur,use gasoline with a lower percentĆ
age of alcohol or ether.
ADDING FUEL

STARTING/STOPPING
WARNING
OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
If engine is equipped with an oil pressure switch, the switch
will either activate a warning light or stop the engine when
the engine runs low on oil. (Read the operating instructions
supplied y the equipment manufacturer to determine
which way your engine is equipped.)
See OIL PRESSURE in the MAINTENANCE SECTION for
oil filling instructions.
♦Use correct type of oil for expected starting
temperature. See Oil.
♦Use fresh gasoline, which has higher volatility to
improve starting.
♦Remove external equipment/engine loads.
(See equipment operating instructions.)
♦Open fuel shutĆoff valve, if equipped, efore
starting engine.
♦Allow engine to warm up several seconds to
several minutes, depending on outside temperature.
♦Gradually open choke.
♦For maximum performance and life, operate engine
with choke in OPEN and throttle in FAST.
STARTING IN COLD WEATHER:
TO START ENGINE

1. Open fuel shutĆoff valve  (if equipped).
2. Move choke control to CHOKE or START .
3. Move throttle (if equipped ) to FAST .
4. Push rocker switch (if equipped ) to ON or RUN .
5. Insert key and turn to START .
CAUTION:
To prolong starter life, use short starting cycles
(5 seconds maximum, then wait one minute). Follow
equipment manufacturer's recommendations for
charging.
6. Allow engine to warm up.
If choke equipped:
Slowly adjust toward RUN position. Wait until engine
runs smoothly efore each choke adjustment.
WARNING
The manufacturer of the equipment on which
this engine is installed specifies top speed at
which the engine will e operated. DO NOT
EXCEED this speed.
TO STOP ENGINE

1. Move throttle to SLOW  (if equipped)
2. Turn key OFF . Remove key and store out of reach of
children.
3. Push rocker switch  (if equipped) to OFF or STOP.
4. Close fuel shutĆoff valve  (if equipped).
NATURAL / LIQUID PROPANE
GAS POWERED ENGINES
FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS
•Use clean, dry fuel, free of moisture or any particulate
material. Using fuels outside the following recommended
values may cause performance pro lems.
•In engines set up to run on LPG, commercial grade HD5
LPG is recommended. Recommended fuel composition
is fuel with a minimum fuel energy of 2500 BTU's/ft3 with
maximum propylene content of 5% and utane and
heavier gas content of 2.5% and minimum propane
content of 90%.
•NG or LPG engines are certified to operate on natural or
liquid propane gas.
WARNING
The equipment on which this engine is
mounted is equipped with an automatic
safety gas fuel lockĆoff" valve. DO NOT
operate the equipment if the fuel lockĆoff"
valve is missing or inoperative.
ADDING FUEL
Read the operating instructions supplied y the equipment
manufacturer for information on refueling natural or LP gas
engine.
TO START ENGINE
Insert key and turn to START.
CAUTION:
To prolong starter life, use short starting cycles
(5 seconds maximum, then wait one minute). Follow
equipment manufacturer's recommendations for
charging.
TO STOP ENGINE
Turn key OFF. Remove key and store out of reach of
children.
MAINTENANCE
Regular maintenance will improve the performance and
extend the life of the engine. See any Authorized Briggs &
Stratton Dealer for service. Use only genuine Briggs &
S ra on par s. O her par s may no perform as well,
may damage he engine, and may resul in injury. In
addition, use of other parts may void your warranty.
ENGINE AND ENGINE PARTS
We recommend that you see an authorized Briggs &
Stratton Service Dealer for all maintenance and service of
the engine and engine parts. Use only genuine Briggs &
Stratton parts.
Perform he following a recommended in ervals:
Every 8 hours or daily
DCheck oil level
DCheck for oil leaks
Every 50 hours

*Change oil and fil er af er firs 50 hours of use,
then every 100 hours or every season. Change oil
every 50 hours when operating the engine under
heavy load or in high temperatures.
Check valve clearance af er firs 50 hours of use,
then every 250 hours.
** Clean more often under dusty conditions or when
air orne de ris is present. Replace air cleaner parts,
if very dirty.
CHANGING OIL AND OIL FILTER

Change oil and filter after first 50 hours and every 100
hours thereafter.
1. With engine OFF ut still warm, remove oil drain plug 
and drain oil into appropriate receptacle. Reinstall drain
plug.
2. Remove oil filter . Before installing new filter, lightly oil
filter gasket with fresh, clean oil.

3. Screw filter on y hand until gasket contacts oil filter
adapter. Tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn more.

4. Place engine level. Remove oil fill cap  and add fresh
oil. Oil filling procedure: First, add 67 ounces (2 liters).
Start and run engine at idle for 30 seconds. Shut engine
off and wait 30 seconds. Then, add more oil slowly to
ring level to Full mark on dipstick . Do no overfill.
5. Replace oil fill cap and dipstick.
CAUTION:
Used oil is a hazardous waste product. Dispose of
used oil properly. Do not discard with household waste.
Check with your local authorities, service center, or
dealer for safe disposal/recycling facilities.
OIL PRESSURE
If oil pressure drops elow 1Ć4 psi (.1Ć.2 kg/cm2), an oil
pressure switch (if engine is equipped) will either activate a
warning device or stop the engine. Check oil level with
dipstick. If oil level is etween ADD and FULL mark on
dipstick, Do not try to restart engine. Contact an Authorized
Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer. Do not operate engine
until oil pressure is corrected.
If oil level is elow ADD mark on dipstick, add oil to ring
level to FULL mark. Restart engine and check oil pressure.
If pressure is normal, continue to operate engine.
No e: Oil pressure gauge, if engine is equipped, is supĆ
plied y manufacturer of equipment.
EMISSION CONTROL
Main enance, replacemen or repair of he emission
con rol devices and sys ems may be performed by any
nonroad engine repair es ablishmen or individual.
However, to o tain no charge repairs under the terms and
provisions of the Briggs & Stratton warranty statement, any
service or emission control part repair or replacement must
e performed y a factory authorized dealer.
WARNING
If you perform any maintenance on the
engine, first disconnect the spark plug wires
from the spark plugs, and disconnect the
attery at the negative terminal (electric
starter engines only) to prevent unintentional
sparking. Unintentional sparking can result
in fire or electric shock. Unintentional startĆ
up can result in entanglement, traumatic
amputation or laceration. Use only correct
tools.
WARNING
•Do not strike the flywheel with hammer or hard
o ject. If done, the flywheel may shatter during
operation.
•Do not tamper with governor spring, links or other
parts to increase engine speed.
SPARK PLUGS

Change spark plugs yearly. Use only Briggs & Stratton
Spark Tester (part num er 19368) to check for spark.
Gap spark plug to 0.51 mm (.020 in.) gap .
No e: In some areas, local law requires using resistor
spark plug to suppress ignition signals. If this engine was
originally equipped with resistor spark plugs, use same
type for replacement.
VALVE CLEARANCE
Check valve clearance every 250 hours.
(See TuneĆup Specifications on page 1).
AIR CLEANER

CAUTION:
Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean
cartridge. Pressurized air can damage cartridge;
solvents will dissolve cartridge.
Clean Air Filter Cartridge every 100 hours. To clean
cartridge, gently tap on end with handle of screwdriver.
Replace cartridge every 400 hours. Clean and replace
more often under dusty conditions.
1. Remove cover .
2. Remove cartridge , and inspect. Replace if very dirty
or any damage occurs to cartridge.
3. Carefully clean out air cleaner cover.
4. Install cartridge in.
5. Install cover
On Gasoline Engine: Install cover and lock clamps with
ru er valve  down.
Gasoline Engine:
Replace Safety Filter Cartridge  every 600 hours, or with
every other air filter cartridge replacement.
To replace cartridge, pull carefully to remove from air
cleaner ody, ensure no de ris enters engine. Install new
safety cartridge first, then install air filter cartridge over
safety filter.
CLEANING DEBRIS

Daily or efore every use, clean accumulated de ris from
engine. Keep linkage, springs and controls clean. Keep area
around and ehind muffler free of any com usti le de ris.
Remove front car uretor cover , and clean around
intake manifold and car uretor.
CAUTION: Do not use water to clean engine parts.
Water could contaminate fuel system. Low pressure
compressed air may e used, e careful not to damage
radiator fins.

FUEL FILTER

WARNING
Drain fuel tank or close fuel shutĆoff valve efore replacing fuel
filter. Otherwise, fuel can leak out, creating a fire/explosion
hazard.When replacing fuel filter, ensure clamps are tight and
fuel flows into the same direction as the arrow marked FLOW.
MUFFLER/FUEL SYSTEM
Replacement parts for the mufĆ
fler must e the same and
installed in the same position as
the original parts, otherwise fire
can occur.
WARNING
Replacement parts for fuel system (cap, hoses, tanks,
filters, etc.) must e the same as original parts,
otherwise fire can occur.
STORAGE
Engines stored over 30 days need special attention.
1. To prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on
essential car uretor parts:
a) if fuel tank contains oxygenated or reformulated
gasoline (gasoline lended with an alcohol or an ether),
run engine until it stops from lack of fuel, or ) if fuel tank
contains gasoline, either run engine until it stops from
lack of fuel, or add a gasoline additive to the gas in the
tank. (See parts list. SingleĆuse pouches of gas additive
are availa le from your service dealer.) If you use a gas
additive, run the engine for several minutes to circulate
the additive through the car uretor. Then, engine and
fuel can e stored up to 24 months.
2. While engine is still warm, change oil.
3. Remove spark plugs and pour a out 1 oz. (30 ml) of
engine oil into each cylinder. Replace spark plugs and
crank slowly to distri ute oil.
4. Clean engine of surface de ris, chaff or grass.
Store in a clean, dry area. Do not
store in same area as a stove,
furnace, water heater, or other apĆ
pliance that uses a pilot light or has a
device that can create a spark.
WARNING

The California Air Resources Board (CARB), U.S. EPA
and B&S are pleased to explain the Emission Control SysĆ
tem Warranty on your model year 2000 and later small offĆ
road engine (SORE). In California, new small offĆroad
engines must e designed, uilt and equipped to meet the
State's stringent antiĆsmog standards. Elsewhere in the
United States, new nonĆroad, sparkĆignition engines certiĆ
fied for model year 1997 and later, must meet similar stanĆ
dards set forth y the U.S. EPA. B&S must warrant the
emission control system on your engine for the periods of
time listed elow, provided there has een no a use,
neglect or improper maintenance of your small offĆroad
engine.
Your emission control system includes parts such as the
car uretor, air cleaner, ignition system, muffler and cataĆ
lytic converter. Also included may e connectors and othĆ
er emission related assem lies.
Where a warranta le condition exists, B&S will repair your
small offĆroad engine at no cost to you including diagnoĆ
sis, parts and la or.

Defec s Warran y Coverage
Small offĆroad engines are warranted relative to emission
control parts defects for a period of two years, su ject to
provisions set forth elow. If any covered part on your enĆ
gine is defective, the part will e repaired or replaced y
B&S.
Owner's Warran y Responsibili ies
As the small offĆroad engine owner, you are responsi le
for the performance of the required maintenance listed in
your Operating and Maintenance Instructions. B&S
recommends that you retain all your receipts covering
maintenance on your small offĆroad engine, ut B&S
cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for
your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled
maintenance.
As the small offĆroad engine owner, you should however
e aware that B&S may deny you warranty coverage if
your small offĆroad engine or a part has failed due to
a use, neglect, improper maintenance or unapproved
modifications.
You are responsi le for presenting your small offĆroad enĆ
gine to an Authorized B&S Service Dealer as soon as a
pro lem exists. The undisputed warranty repairs should
e completed in a reasona le amount of time, not to exĆ
ceed 30 days.

The emission warranty is a defects warranty. Defects are
judged on normal engine performance. The warranty is
not related to an inĆuse emission test.

The following are specific provisions relative to your EmisĆ
sion Control Defects Warranty Coverage. It is in addition
to the B&S engine warranty for nonĆregulated engines
found in the Operating and Maintenance Instructions.
1. Warranted Parts
Coverage under this warranty extends only to the parts
listed elow (the emission control systems parts) to the
extent these parts were present on the engine purchased.

2. Length of Coverage
B&S warrants to the initial owner and each su sequent
purchaser that the Warranted Parts shall e free from deĆ
fects in materials and workmanship which caused the failĆ
ure of the Warranted Parts for a period of two years from
the date the engine is delivered to a retail purchaser.
3. No Charge
Repair or replacement of any Warranted Part will e perĆ
formed at no charge to the owner, including diagnostic laĆ
or which leads to the determination that a Warranted
Part is defective, if the diagnostic work is performed at an
Authorized B&S Service Dealer. For emissions warranty
service contact your nearest Authorized B&S Service
Dealer as listed in the Yellow Pages" under Engines,
Gasoline," Gasoline Engines," Lawn Mowers," or similar
category.
4. Claims and Coverage Exclusions
Warranty claims shall e filed in accordance with the proĆ
visions of the B&S Engine Warranty Policy. Warranty covĆ
erage shall e excluded for failures of Warranted Parts
which are not original B&S parts or ecause of a use, neĆ
glect or improper maintenance as set forth in the B&S EnĆ
gine Warranty Policy. B&S is not lia le to cover failures of
Warranted Parts caused y the use of addĆon, nonĆorigiĆ
nal, or modified parts.
5. Maintenance
Any Warranted Part which is not scheduled for replaceĆ
ment as required maintenance or which is scheduled only
for regular inspection to the effect of repair or replace as
necessary" shall e warranted as to defects for the warĆ
ranty period. Any Warranted Part which is scheduled for
replacement as required maintenance shall e warranted
as to defects only for the period of time up to the first
scheduled replacement for that part. Any replacement
part that is equivalent in performance and dura ility may
e used in the performance of any maintenance or reĆ
pairs. The owner is responsi le for the performance of all
required maintenance, as defined in the B&S Operating
and Maintenance Instructions.
6. Consequential Coverage
Coverage hereunder shall extend to the failure of any enĆ
gine components caused y the failure of any Warranted
Part still under warranty.

Engines that are certified to meet the California Air
Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards
must display information regarding the Emissions
Dura ility Period and the Air Index. Briggs & Stratton
makes this information availa le to the consumer on
our emission la els. The engine la el will indicate
certification information.
The Emission Durabili y Period descri es the numĆ
er of hours of actual running time for which the engine
is certified to e emission compliant, assuming proper
maintenance in accordance with the Operating &
Maintenance Instructions. The following categories
are used:
Modera e:Engine is certified to e emission compliant
for 125 hours of actual engine running time.
In ermedia e:Engine is certified to e emission comĆ
pliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time.
Ex ended:Engine is certified to e emission compliant
for 500 hours of actual engine running time.
For example, a typical walkĆ ehind lawn mower is
used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emission
Durabili y Period of an engine with an in ermedia e
rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.
The Air Index is a calculated num er descri ing the
relative level of emission for a specific engine family.
The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This
information is displayed in graphical form on the
emission la el.

Compliance Period On Engine Emissions
Compliance Label
After July 1, 2000 certain Briggs & Stratton engines will
e certified to meet the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission stanĆ
dards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emissions
Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions
Compliance la el indicates the num er of operating
hours for which the engine has een shown to meet
Federal emission requirements. For engines less than
225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250
hours and A = 500 hours. For engines of 225 cc or
more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and
A = 1000 hours.
The displacement of Model Series 540000 engines
is 895 cc (54.6 cu. in.).

ABOUT YOUR ENGINE WARRANTY
Briggs & Stratton welcomes warranty repair and apologizes to
you for eing inconvenienced. Any Authorized Service Dealer
may perform warranty repairs. Most warranty repairs are hanĆ
dled routinely, ut sometimes requests for warranty service may
not e appropriate. For example, warranty would not apply if enĆ
gine damage occurred ecause of misuse, lack of routine mainĆ
tenance, shipping, handling, warehousing or improper installaĆ
tion. Similarly, warranty is void if the serial num er of the engine
has een removed or the engine has een altered or modified.
If a customer differs with the decision of the Service Dealer, an
investigation will e made to determine whether the warranty
applies. Ask the Service Dealer to su mit all supporting facts to
his Distri utor or the Factory for review. If the Distri utor or the
Factory decides that the claim is justified, the customer will e
fully reim ursed for those items that are defective. To avoid misĆ
understanding which might occur etween the customer and
the Dealer, listed elow are some of the causes of engine failure
that the warranty does not cover.
Normal wear:
Engines, like all mechanical devices, need periodic parts service
and replacement to perform well. Warranty will not cover repair
when normal use has exhausted the life of a part or an engine.
Improper main enance:
The life of an engine depends upon the conditions under which it
operates, and the care it receives. Some applications, such as
tillers, pumps and rotary mowers, are very often used in dusty or
dirty conditions, which can cause what appears to e premature
wear. Such wear, when caused y dirt, dust, spark plug cleaning
grit, or other a rasive material that has entered the engine eĆ
cause of improper maintenance, is not covered y warranty.
This warran y covers engine rela ed defec ive ma erial and/
or workmanship only, and no replacemen or refund of he
equipmen o which he engine may be moun ed. Nor does
he warran y ex end o repairs required because of:
1. PROBLEMS CAUSED BY PARTS THAT ARE NOT
ORIGINAL BRIGGS & STRATTON PARTS.
2. Equipment controls or installations that prevent starting,
cause unsatisfactory engine performance, or shorten enĆ
gine life. (Contact equipment manufacturer.)
3. Leaking car uretors, clogged fuel pipes, sticking valves,
or other damage, caused y using contaminated or stale
fuel. (Use clean, fresh, leadĆfree gasoline and Briggs &
Stratton Fuel Sta ilizer, Part No. 5041.)
4. Parts which are scored or roken ecause an engine was
operated with insufficient or contaminated lu ricating oil,
or an incorrect grade of lu ricating oil (check oil level daily
or after every 8 hours of operation. Refill when necessary
and change at recommended intervals.) OIL GARD®
may not shut down running engine. Engine damage may
occur if oil level is not properly maintained. Read OperatĆ
ing & Maintenance Instructions.
5. Repair or adjustment of associated parts or assem lies
such as clutches, transmissions, remote controls, etc.,
which are not manufactured y Briggs & Stratton.
6. Damage or wear to parts caused y dirt, which entered
the engine ecause of improper air cleaner maintenance,
reĆassem ly, or use of a nonĆoriginal air cleaner element
or cartridge. (At recommended intervals, clean and reĆoil
the OilĆFoam element or the foam preĆcleaner, and
replace the cartridge.) Read Operating & Maintenance
Instructions.
7. Parts damaged y overĆspeeding, or overheating caused
y grass, de ris, or dirt, which plugs or clogs the cooling
fins, or flywheel area, or damage caused y operating the
engine in a confined area without sufficient ventilation.
(Clean fins on the cylinder, cylinder head and flywheel at
recommended intervals.) Read Operating & Maintenance
Instructions.
8. Engine or equipment parts roken y excessive vi ration
caused y a loose engine mounting, loose cutter lades,
un alanced lades or loose or un alanced impellers, imĆ
proper attachment of equipment to engine crankshaft,
overĆspeeding or other a use in operation.
9. A ent or roken crankshaft, caused y striking a solid o Ć
ject with the cutter lade of a rotary lawn mower, or excesĆ
sive vĆ elt tightness.
10. Routine tuneĆup or adjustment of the engine.
11. Engine or engine component failure, i.e., com ustion
cham er, valves, valve seats, valve guides, or urned
starter motor windings, caused y the use of alternate
fuels such as, liquified petroleum, natural gas, altered
gasolines, etc.

acoplar este motor Por esta razón, usted debe leer
cuidadosamente y comprender las instrucciones de operación
para el equipo en el cual es colocado su motor

con los motores
•Informarlo a usted del riesgo de las lesiones asociado con
aquellos peligros, y
•Contarle como evitar o reducir el riesgo de una lesión
LAS INSTRUCCIONES DE MANTENIMIENTO
& OPERACIÓN CONTIENEN INFORMACIÓN
DE SEGURIDAD PARA
El símbolo de aviso de seguridad ( ) es usado para
identificar información de seguridad concerniente a los peligros
que pueden producir lesiones personales
Una palabra señalizada (PELIGRO, ADVERTENCIA o
PRECAUCIÓN) es usada con el símbolo de aviso para indicar la
probabilidad de una lesión y su gravedad potencial Además, un
símbolo de peligro puede ser utilizado para representar el tipo de
peligro
PELIGRO indica un peligro que si no es evitado,
ocasionará la muerte o lesiones graves.
ADVERTENCIA indica un peligro que si no es evitado,
ocasionaría la muerte o lesiones graves.
PRECAUCIÓN indica un peligro que si no es evitado,
podría ocasionar lesiones menores o moderadas.
PRECAUCIÓN, cuando es usado sin el símbolo de
aviso, indica una situación que podría ocasionar
daños en el motor.
La descarga de escape que expele este motor por este
producto contiene químicos conocidos para el Estado de
California que pueden ocasionar cáncer, defectos de
nacimiento u otros daños que pueden ser perjudiciales para la
reproducción

CUANDO AÑADA COMBUSTIBLE
•APAGUE el motor y deje que se enfríe por lo menos
2 minutos antes de remover la tapa de gasolina
•Llene el tanque de combustible en exteriores o en un área
bien ventilada
•No llene demasiado el tanque de combustible Llene el
tanque aproximadamente 1Ć1/2 pulgadas por debajo de
la parte superior del cuello para permitir la expansión del
combustible
•Mantenga la gasolina a distancia de chispas, llamas
abiertas, testigos piloto, calor y otras fuentes de
encendido
•Compruebe con frecuencia si existen grietas o fugas en
las mangueras de combustible, el tanque, la tapa y en los
accesorios Cámbielos si es necesario
CUANDO DE ARRANQUE AL MOTOR
•Asegúrese que la bujía, el mofle, la tapa de combustible
y el filtro de aire estén en su lugar
•No haga girar el motor si removió la bujía
•Si se derramó combustible, espere hasta que se haya
evaporado antes de darle arranque al motor
•Si el motor se inunda, ajuste el estrangulador a la posición
OPEN/RUN, coloque el acelerador en la posición FAST y
haga girar el motor hasta que arranque
CUANDO OPERE EL EQUIPO
•No incline el motor ni el equipo a un ángulo que pueda
ocasionar derrames de gasolina
•No ahogue el carburador para detener el motor
CUANDO TRANSPORTE EL EQUIPO
•Transpórtelo con el tanque de combustible VACIO o con
la válvula de paso de combustible en la posición OFF
•Transporte los motores que operen con GAS NATURAL/
GAS PROPANO (LP) con el cilindro de combustible
vacío o con la válvula cerrada, o con el tanque
desconectado
CUANDO ALMACENE EL COMBUSTIBLE O EL
EQUIPO CON COMBUSTIBLE EN EL TANQUE
•Almacene a distancia de hornos, estufas, calentadores de
agua u otros aparatos que utilicen testigos piloto u otras
fuentes de encendido ya que estos pueden encender los
vapores de gasolina
Protéjase los ojos cuando realice un trabajo de
reparación
Se puede presentar congelamiento por el
contacto de la piel/ojos con una fuga de gas
propano
•La Instalación, el ajuste y el trabajo de reparación deben
hacerse por un técnico calificado
•Las mangueras flexibles de suministro deben revisarse
con regularidad para asegurarse que están en buenas
condiciones Reemplace los componentes que estén
dañados o que presenten fugas
ADVERTENCIA
SI SE PRESENTA UN OLOR A GAS
•NO le de arranque al motor
•NO accione ningún suiche eléctrico
•NO use el teléfono cerca
•Evacúe el área
•Contacte el abastecedor de gas o el departamento de
incendios
RECUERDE
•El vapor del gas propano LPG es más denso que el aire y
tiende a acumularse en las áreas de abajo El vapor del
gas natural NG es más fluido que el aire y tiende a
acumularse en las áreas de arriba Ambos pueden
alcanzar localizaciones remotas
•Mantenga todas las llamas, chispas, testigos piloto y
otras fuentes de encendido a distancia del área donde es
operado o reparado el motor
•NO fume cuando esté operando o reparando el motor
•NO guarde gasolina ni otros vapores o líquidos
inflamables cerca del motor
•ANTES de realizar cualquier trabajo de servicio al motor,
cierre el suministro de gas
•Después de la instalación o del servicio inicial,
compruebe fugas de gas NO use una llama abierta
Aplique agua con bastante jabón o una solución para
detectar fugas con un cepillo y busque burbujas
•Mantenga el equipo y el área que rodea el motor libre de
desechos
•Instale el sistema de combustible según los códigos
aplicables de combustible/gas
Los combustibles gaseosos son extremadaĆ
mente inflamables y fácilmente forman
mezclas explosivas de vaporĆaire en tempeĆ
raturas ambiente

Respirar monóxido de carbono puede
ocasionar náuseas, desmayos o la muerte
•Deje que el mofle, el cilindro y las aletas del motor se
enfríen antes de tocarlos
•Remueva los combustibles acumulados en el área del
mofle y en el área del cilindro
•Instale y mantenga en orden de funcionamiento un
atrapachispas antes de utilizar el equipo en una zona con
vegetación tupida o en terrenos agrestes con grama
El Estado de California lo exige (Sección 4442 del Código
de Recursos Públicos de California) Otros estados
pueden tener leyes similares Las leyes federales se
aplican en tierras federales
ADVERTENCIA
El funcionamiento de los motores produce calor
Las partes de los motores, especialmente el
mofle, se calientan demasiado
Pueden ocurrir graves quemaduras a causa de
su contacto
Desechos combustibles, tal como hojas, grama,
maleza, etc pueden alcanzar a encenderse
ANTES DE HACER AJUSTES O REPARACIONES
•Desconecte el cable de la bujía y manténgalo a distancia
de bujía
•Desconecte la batería en la terminal negativa
(únicamente motores con arranque eléctrico)
CUANDO COMPRUEBE CHISPA
•Utilice un probador de bujías aprobado
•NO compruebe chispa si removió la bujía
ADVERTENCIA
Un chispeo involuntario puede producir un
incendio o una descarga eléctrica
Una puesta en marcha involuntaria puede
ocasionar un enredo, una amputación
traumática o una laceración
RECOMENDACIONES DE ACEITE
PRECAUCIÓN Este motor es despachado de Briggs & Stratton
sin aceite Compruebe el nivel de aceite antes de darle
arranque al motor Si usted le da arranque al motor sin aceite,
ocasionará daños irreparables en el motor y no estarán
cubiertos por la garantía
La capacidad de aceite es aproximadamente 2 3 litros
(80 onzas)*
*Cantidad aproximada cuando cambia aceite y filtro
Tipo de Aceite para usar
•Use un aceite detergente de alta calidad clasificado
Para Servicio SF, SG, SH, SJ" o superior tal como el aceite
grado 30 de Briggs & Stratton, Número de Parte 100005
(20 onzas) o 100028 (48 onzas)
•No use aditivos especiales con aceites recomendados
•No mezcle aceite con gasolina
•Escoja el grado de viscosidad SAE del aceite según este
cuadro que iguala la temperatura de arranque anticipada antes
del próximo cambio de aceite

* PRECAUCIÓN El uso de aceites multígrados no
sintéticos (5WĆ30, 10WĆ30, etc ) a temperaturas
superiores a 40° F (4° C) producirá más alto consumo de
aceite del normal Compruebe el nivel de aceite con mayor
frecuencia cuando utilice aceites multígrados
** PRECAUCIÓN El uso de aceite SAE grado 30, si es
usado a una temperatura inferior a 40° F (4° C) producirá
dificultad de arranque y un posible daño en el motor debido
a una lubricación inadecuada
Nota El aceite sintético que cumple con ILSAC GFĆ2,
marca de certificación API y símbolo de servicio API
(mostrado a la izquierda) con CONSERVACIÓN DE
ENERGÍA SJ/CF" o superior, es un aceite aceptable a
todas las temperaturas El uso de aceites sintéticos
no altera los intervalos requeridos de cambio de
aceite
