Conductive probe EL 8 •
32655-EN-220324
3.2 Principle of operation
EL 8 is a point level sensor with partly insulated conductive electrode
for level detection.
EL 8 is very rugged and can be used in all areas of industrial process
technology.
The level switch can be used in conductive liquids such as e.g. water.
Typicalapplicationsareoverllanddryrunprotection.
The conductive measuring principle places no special requirements
oninstallation.Hence,manydierentapplicationscanbeequipped
with EL 8.
Conductive probes detect the product resistance when their elec-
trodes are covered by the product.
The switching signal is determined by the length or mounting position
of the respective electrode.
Alowalternatingcurrentowsthroughtheelectrodes,ismeasuredfor
amplitude and phase position by the electronics of the controller and
converted into a switching command.
EL 8 is operated with an external processing unit. The connected
controller powers EL 8 and provides a switching signal. A connected
device can be activated directly with this switching command (e.g. a
warning system, a PLC, a pump, etc.).
Youcanndtheexactrangeofthevoltagesupplyinchapter"Techni-
cal data" in the operating instructions manual of the controller.
3.3 Adjustment
The probe does not have its own electronics. The measurement is
carried out via the connected controller.
3.4 Packaging, transport and storage
Your instrument was protected by packaging during transport. Its
capacity to handle normal loads during transport is assured by a test
based on ISO 4180.
The packaging of standard instruments consists of environment-
friendly, recyclable cardboard. For special versions, PE foam or PE
foil is also used. Dispose of the packaging material via specialised
recycling companies.
Transport must be carried out in due consideration of the notes on the
transport packaging. Nonobservance of these instructions can cause
damage to the device.
The delivery must be checked for completeness and possible transit
damage immediately at receipt. Ascertained transit damage or con-
cealed defects must be appropriately dealt with.

Up to the time of installation, the packages must be left closed and
stored according to the orientation and storage markings on the
outside.
Unless otherwise indicated, the packages must be stored only under
the following conditions:
• Not in the open
• Dry and dust free
• Not exposed to corrosive media
• Protected against solar radiation
• Avoiding mechanical shock and vibration
• Storage and transport temperature see chapter " Supplement -
Technical data - Ambient conditions"
• Relative humidity 20 … 85 %

4 Mounting
4.1 General instructions
In general the level switch can be mounted in any position. The instru-
ment must be mounted in such a way that the probe is at the height of
the requested switching point.
The probe is provided with a special hexagon for tightening. Due to
the hexagon shape, the housing itself can be used to screw the instru-
ment in.
Thewrenchsizeisstatedinchapter"Supplement" under " Dimen-
sions".
Use the recommended cables (see chapter " Connecting to voltage
supply") and keep the opening for the cable as small as possible.
You can give your EL 8 additional protection against moisture pene-
tration by leading the connection cable downward in front of the cable
gland.Rainandcondensationwatercanthusdraino.Thisapplies
mainly to outdoor mounting as well as installation in areas where high
humidity is expected (e.g. through cleaning processes) or on cooled
or heated vessels.
Do not hold EL 8 on its electrode rods. Particularly with long rod ver-
sions, the sensor can be damaged by the weight of the instrument.
Theprocessttingmustbesealedifthereisgaugeorlowpressure
in the vessel. Before use, check if the sealing material is resistant
against the measured product and the process temperature.
Themax.permissiblepressureisspeciedinchapter"Technical
data" or on the type label of the sensor.
4.2 Mounting instructions
Due to agitators, equipment vibration or similar, the level switch can
be subjected to strong lateral forces.
Extreme vibration caused by the system, e.g. due to agitators or
turbulenceinthevesselfromuidisation,cancausetheprobeofEL
8 to vibrate in resonance. If a longer rod version is necessary, you can
secure the probe by fastening a suitable isolated brace or guy directly
above the end of the rod.

IfEL8ismountedinthellingstream,unwantedfalsemeasurement
signals can be generated. For this reason, mount EL 8 at a position in
thevesselwherenodisturbances,e.g.fromllingopenings,agitators,
etc., can occur.
This applies particularly to instrument versions with a longer probe.
Fig.3:Inowingmedium
The probe should protrude into the vessel to avoid buildup. For that
reason,avoidusinghighmountingbossesforscrew-inttings.This
applies particularly to use in adhesive products.
Make sure that the mechanical connection of the probe to the vessel

Use conductive seals, such as those made of copper or lead, etc.
Insulatingmeasures,suchascoveringthethreadwithTeontape,
can interrupt the necessary electrical connection with metal vessels.
For this reason, ground the probe on the vessel or use a conductive
seal material.

anceandresafetyformax.occurringambienttemperature
Remove the black rubber cover and punch a small hole in the upper
side of the rubber cover with a sharp tool (e.g. a ball pen).
Note:
Do not use a knife or similar for puncturing
Push the connection cable through this opening.
5.2 Wiring plan
The ground connection of the controller must be on the same electri-
cal potential of the conductive vessel.
The EL 8 can be equipped optionally with a grounding eye. Connect
the ground cable according to the following illustration.

7.1 Maintenance
If the device is used properly, no special maintenance is required in
normal operation.
The cleaning helps that the type label and markings on the instrument
are visible.
Take note of the following:
• Use only cleaning agents which do not corrode the housings, type
label and seals
• Use only cleaning methods corresponding to the housing protec-
tion rating
7.2 Rectify faults
Thedeviceoersmaximumreliability.Nevertheless,faultscanoccur
during operation. These may be caused by the following, e.g.:
• Sensor
• Process
• Voltage supply
• Signal processing

this service worldwide, the support is only available in the English
language. The service is free, only standard call charges are incurred.
7.3 Shortening the probe
The probe can be shortened by any amount.
Remove the insulation on a length of approx. 20 mm on the tip of the
probe. Hence the probe can detect the switching point in an optimum
way.

Warning:
Before dismounting, be aware of dangerous process conditions such
as e.g. pressure in the vessel, high temperatures, corrosive or toxic
products etc.
Take note of chapters " Mounting" and " Connecting to voltage sup-
ply" and carry out the listed steps in reverse order.
8.2 Disposal
Pass the instrument on to a specialised recycling company and do not
use the municipal collecting points.
Remove any batteries in advance, if they can be removed from the
device, and dispose of them separately.
If personal data is stored on the old device to be disposed of, delete it
before disposal.
If you have no way to dispose of the old instrument properly, please
