VERITAS NetBackup 5240 Manual

Rail Replacement: 5240/5250 Appliance
Document Number: 179
Version: 4.1 (05/04/2020)
Purpose
This document describes the process for replacing the rails that hold the 5240 and 5250 Appliance
in the rack.
Affected appliance models
• 5240 Appliance
• 5250 Appliance
Electrical Safety
The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards.
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions
to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge
(ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage.
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations:
• Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the
electrostatically sensitive elements on a board.
• When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit.
About replacing the 5240 and 5250 Appliance rails
This document describes how to replace the rails that hold the 5240 and 5250 Appliance in the rack.
Make sure that you have a large, level, ESD-compliant work surface on which to set the appliance
and spare parts.

Veritas Appliance
Hardware Service Procedure

Warning: The appliance weighs in excess of 52 lbs (24 kg). Use appropriate tools and techniques
to lift and move the appliance. Make sure that the appliance does not destabilize the rack when it is
pulled forward.
Note: If the appliance has attached storage shelves, they need to be disconnected from the appliance
while the appliance is serviced. The best practice is to turn off the shelves before you work on the
rack they are housed in, but it is not required.
Requirements
Verify that you have the following items:
• Appliance replacement rail kit
• Philips screwdriver
• ESD wrist strap
Removing the appliance from the rack
To remove the appliance from the rack
1Verify the appliance serial number. The serial number begins with the letters VTAS, and is located
on a label on the rear panel of the appliance.
2Before you perform service, the appliance needs to be turned off with a soft shutdown. A soft
shutdown informs the NetBackup Appliance operating system to stop and close all active
processes. A soft shutdown also stops all communications to the attached storage shelf or shelves.
After the operating system stops all of the processes, the appliance powers itself off.
To perform a soft shutdown, use the Support > Shutdown command in the NetBackup Appliance Shell
Menu.
Note: Before performing a soft shutdown, ensure that all backup and restore operations have
been completed.

HSP #179: Rail Replacement

Warning: You should never perform a hard shutdown by using the power button to turn off the
NetBackup Appliance. Using the power button to turn off the NetBackup Appliance can cause
data corruption to occur.
3Verify that the appliance is shut down. The following indicate if the appliance is ready for service:
• The LED indicators on the control panel are off.
System Status LED
NIC-6 Activity LED
NIC-5 Activity LED
Power/Sleep Button
Hard Drive Activity LED
System ID Button
System Cold Reset Button
NMI Button
• The LED indicators for the disks on the front of the appliance are off. The LED indicators on
the rear of the appliance are off.
• There is no active disk or fan noise and no airflow coming out of the rear panel.
4Put on an ESD-compliant wrist strap or take other ESD-protective measures.
5Label and disconnect all cables, including the power cords, from the rear panel of the appliance.
Warning: If the data cables are connected to the wrong ports after the repair, data can be
corrupted or lost when the appliance is turned on.
6Remove the front bezel. Grip the bezel on the sides and pull it from the appliance.
7Unscrew the two thumb screws on each ear of the front panel of the appliance.
8Slide the appliance fully forward out of the rack until the rail guides lock.
9With the guide rails fully extended and locked, locate the white pull tabs on the inner rails.
3
HSP #179: Rail Replacement

Pull both white tabs to release the inner rails from the outer and the intermediate rails and slide
the appliance out.
Warning: The appliance weighs in excess of 52 lbs (24 kg). Use appropriate tools and techniques
to lift and move the appliance. Make sure that the appliance does not destabilize the rack when
it is pulled forward.
10 Place the appliance on a flat, ESD-compliant surface.
Removing the faulty rails
To remove the faulty rails
1Remove the inner rails that are connected to the sides of the appliance by sliding them toward
the front of the appliance until they click free.
2Collapse the rail components that are still installed in the rack so that they fit inside of the rack.
3Record the position of the rails within the rack so that you can install the new rails in the same
space. Record the rack unit (RU) and the holes in the RU that contain the pins and the screws.
4Remove the screw that connects the rear of the rail to the rack.

5At the rear of one of the rails, locate the blue tab that secures the rail in place. Lift the tab to unlock
the rail.
6Pull the pins out of the rack holes at the front and the back of the rail to fully remove it from the
rack.

7Repeat the process with the other rail.
Installing the new rails
To install the new rails
1Examine the rack and the appliance for any potential damage before you attempt to install the
new rails.
If the rack and the appliance are free of damage, continue with the next step.
2Identify the left and the right rails. The front of the left rail is labeled as "FRONT-A." The front of
the right rail is labeled as "FRONT-B." The "FRONT" labels face outward.
3Extend both replacement rails to expose the white pull tabs on the inner rails.
6
HSP #179: Rail Replacement

Pull the white tabs forward to release the inner rails from the outer and the intermediate rails.
4Install the inner rails on the appliance by sliding them toward the back of the appliance until they
click into place.
5Starting with one of the rails, align the pins (small circles) on the front of the rail with the rack
holes. Slide the rail forward until the lock clicks into place on the rack (large circle).
7
HSP #179: Rail Replacement

6Fit the pins on the back of the rail in the appropriate rack holes and push until they click into place.
Make sure that the lock is behind the rack post.
7Push the blue tab toward the center of the rack until it clicks to lock the rail in place.
8Insert the screw and washer from the rail replacement kit to secure the rear of the rail to the rack.

HSP #179: Rail Replacement

9Repeat the process with the second rail.
10 Verify that both rails are parallel and fastened securely and that they can pull out to their full
extension.
Reinstalling the appliance in the rack
To reinstall the appliance in the rack
1Pull the rack rails forward until they are extended far enough that you can place the appliance
into the rails.
2Carefully align the appliance rails with the rack rails. Slide the blue tab on the outer rail and push
the appliance into the rack until it locks.
3Secure the two thumb screws on each ear of the appliance front panel to the screw holes on the
front of each rail (arrows).

HSP #179: Rail Replacement

4Slide the appliance into the rack and reconnect the data cables according to the labels you placed
on them earlier.
Warning: If the data cables are connected to the wrong ports, data can be corrupted or lost
when the appliance is turned on.
5Replace the bezel.
6If any attached external storage systems are off, turn on the external systems and wait for them
to initialize. The storage shelves can take up to 30 seconds to initialize.
7Press the Power button on the front panel to start the appliance.
8After the appliance initializes, verify that the System Status LED on the front panel is off.
If the System Status LED is blinking green or is amber, contact Veritas Support.
