Purpose
This document describes the process for replacing a fibre channel SFP module in a 5U84 Storage
Shelf that is connected to a 5340 appliance.
Electrical Safety
The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards.
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions
to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge
(ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage.
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations:
• Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the
electrostatically sensitive elements on a board.
• When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit.
High availability (HA) appliance service considerations
Attention: A HA or multi-node appliance is serviced in the same manner as a single node appliance.
About replacing a Fibre Channel SFP module in a 5U84 Primary
Storage Shelf RAID Controller
The 5U84 Primary Storage Shelf uses two RAID Controllers located in the top two slots of the shelf's
back panel. Each RAID Controller holds four SFP modules that can be individually replaced.

Hardware Service Procedure

Requirements
Use the following to verify the requirements of the service.
Verify you have the following items
1Replacement SFP module
2ESD wrist strap
3Removable labels to mark the fibre optic cables
Removing a faulty Fibre Channel SFP module
Use the following procedure to remove a faulty Fibre Channel SFP module.
To remove the faulty Fibre Channel SFP module
1Locate the faulty Fibre Channel SFP module and attach a removable label to the fiber optic cable
connected to the faulty module.
The fiber optic cable should look like this after it is disconnected from the module.
2Disconnect the fiber optic cable.

Disconnect the fiber optic cable by depressing the clip located at the top of the fiber optic cable
connector and then pulling the connector out of the optical module.
3(Optionally) If available, place the fiber cable plastic guards into the opening of the fiber optic
cable tubes.
By doing this, the fiber cable cannot be damaged or be pointed into a person’s eye.
4Remove the module by grasping the hinged removal tab at the front of the module.
The tab swings down to provide a handle that can be used to remove or insert the optical module.

Installing a replacement Fibre Channel SFP module
Use the following procedure to install a replacement Fibre Channel SFP module.
To install the replacement Fibre Channel SFP module
1Locate the replacement Fibre Channel SFP module.
2Align the module face-up and then slide the module slowly into the receptacle until resistance is
felt.
3Press the front of the module and apply a slight amount of additional pressure until you feel and
hear the module click into the place.
4Remove the plastic guards from the ends of the fiber optic cable tubes.
5Insert the connector into the SFP module until the connector clicks
6Remove the temporary label from the fibre optic cable.
7Verify that the system is functioning properly. If it is not, contact Veritas Technical Support.
