fortransmiing, so thatthe receivingantenna does
notabsorbenergyfromthetransmittingantenna.
Thereareanumberofwaysto dothis,depending
ontheTX/RXfrequencyseparation,andontheloca-
tionsavailableforantennamounting.Ifaduplexeris
used,asingleantennasucesforbothtransmiing
andreceiving.Ifusingareduced-sizeduplexer,a
six-cavitymodel(minimum) is recommended.Ver-
texStandardrecommendstheuseoftheduplexer.

Regardlessoftheabovechoice,itisofparamount
importancethat the antenna(s)be mountedas high
andin theclear aspossible, preferablywithin line-
of-sighttoallrepeaterusers.Furthermore,lossesin
thefeedline(s)mustbeminimized,sothefeedline(s)
shouldbehighquality,andasshortaspossible.If
alongfeedlineisnecessary,usecoaxialhardline
cabletoreducelosses.
Repeaterantennasshouldhaveanimpedanceof50
Ωattheoperatingfrequency.Whenseparatereceive
andtransmitantennasareused,high-Qnarrow-
bandtypesmayservetominimizeinteraction.How-
ever,whenasingleantennaisusedwithaduplexer,
itshouldbealow-Qwide-bandtype.
Foruninterruptedoperationduringpowerfailures,a
12voltrechargeabletypebaery(55-Ahormorerec-
ommended)maybeconnectedtotheBATTterminal
postson therear panel.While therepeater isoper-
atingfromtheAC source, aslightchargingcurrent
willmaintainbaerycharge.IntheeventofanAC
poweroutage,theautomaticpowercontrolcircuit
willautomaticallyswitchtherepeatertothebackup
baery,andoperationwillnotbeinterrupted.
Aerprolongedoperationfromthebaery,itshould
bedisconnectedfromtherepeaterandrecharged
separatelybeforere-connecting,asthetricklecharge
isnotsufficientforrechargingacompletelydis-
chargedbaery.
WhileoperatingfromabaeryorDCsupply,there-
peaterrequiresapproximately7amperesat12Volts
duringtransmit.
Whiletheoperatingtemperaturerangeof there-
peaterisquitebroad,thebestlocationisonein
whichtheairtemperaturedoesnotapproachtheex-
tremesofthespeciedrange,andonethatdoesnot
changerapidly.Makesuretoallowforfreeairow
aroundtheheatsinkontherearapronatalltimes.In
warmclimates,therepeatershouldnotbesealedin
asmallclosedroom.
Protecttherepeaterfromwindandrain,andex-
tremesintemperatureorhumiditythatmayshorten
theusefullifeoftheequipment.Trytolocatethere-
peaterinanenvironmentthatisalsocomfortablefor
servicepersonnel,ifpossible.
