VN-RAID NVR-Workstation/Kollector RAID Setup
This procedure describes the setup of the VN-RAID Series of Digital Video RAID Level 5 Storage Systems.
Note: Vicon systems and components, like most electronic equipment, require a clean, stable power
source. Voltage irregularities such as surges, drops, and interruptions can affect the operation of
your equipment and, in severe cases, damage certain components. Vicon requires the use of
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. Failure to comply voids the unit warranty.

The ViconNet RAID Storage System and ViconNet® NVR/
Workstation or Kollector® recorder must be setup, connected
and powered-on in a specific order to verify proper operation.
The following steps MUST be done in order to avoid problems.
Refer to the RAID manufacturer’s manual packed in the box for
complete information on the VN-RAID Storage System.
1. Unpack the entire system. Do not connect any cables until
instructed. If there are multiple VN-RAID and NVR/Kollector
recorder units, match the pairs in accordance with their
labels. Refer to Figure 1. Rack-mount the units in
accordance with the unit manuals or lay the units out on a
stable and flat surface for setup.
2. Connect the monitor to the back of the Kollector recorder or
NVR/Workstation as shown in Figure 1a. Connect the proper
end of the supplied SCSI cable to one of the two SCSI
connectors as shown in Figure 1a and 4. Note that rear
panels vary among the Kollector and NVR/Workstation units.
Figure 1a is an Elite (480 fps). Figure 4 shows a typical SCSI
connector on an NVR.
3. Connect the remaining end of the SCSI cable to the SCSI
connector on the rear panel of the VN-RAID Storage System
as shown in Figure 1b and 4.
Example: Connect cable from channel 1/A on SCSI port of
the Kollector to CH0-In on the RAID 1 and channel 2/B on
SCSI port to CH0-In on RAID 2.
4. Unpack the RAID hard drives. Reference the VN-RAID
Storage System manual for precautions and full installation
steps. These hard drives are preassembled into their drive
trays.
a. Locate Drive 1. Locate drive bay 1 as shown in Figures 2
and 3. There is a label with the drive number order on
the left side of the RAID box (refer to Figure 1b) and on
the inside portion of the display screen.
b. Verify that the key-lock is in the horizontal position. If not,
turn it with a screwdriver from vertical to horizontal.
c. Push the clip, in the center of the drive bay 1 bezel,
upward to open the front flap.
d. With the flap open, insert drive 1 into the slot until it
seats. Do not force it.
e. Gently close the flap until it snaps into place. Turn the
key-lock back to the vertical position to lock the flap.

5. Repeat steps a – e on remaining drive bays (7 or 15).
The completed assembly should resemble Figure 3.
6. Connect the provided power cable to the monitor and to
an appropriate power outlet. Power-on the monitor.
7. Verify the position of the 2 rocker (power) switches on
the rear panel of the VN-RAID Storage System. They
must be set to the OFF position so the "O" side of the
rocker is down against the panel. Figure 4 shows the 2
rocker switches in the OFF position. With the 2
switches OFF, connect the provided power cable to the
VN-RAID and to an appropriate power outlet. Power-on
the VN-RAID by pushing the "I" side of the rocker
switches down. The system will perform a boot routine
for about 1 minute.
8. Connect the provided power cable to the Kollector or
NVR/Workstation and to an appropriate outlet.
9. The VN-RAID Storage System boot routine is
completed when the blue Power status LED is
illuminated solid. The display will read "Ready." The
drives will also display individual solid green LEDs.
11. With the VN-RAID Storage System functional, power-on
the Kollector or NVR/Workstation unit. The system will
perform a boot routine for about 1 minute.

12. When the NVR/Workstation/Kollector Recorder
displays the Main Screen shown in Figure 5, login
at the appropriate operator level, entering the
correct Username and Password. See details on
setting up passwords in the ViconNet or Kollector
Installation & Operation manual.
13. At the Main Screen, select the Setup button and
the Main Settings Menu will appear as shown in
Figure 6.
14. At the Main Settings (System Settings) Menu,
select the Storage Database button; the Storage
Database Utilities screen will appear as shown in
Figure 7.
15. Verify that the VN-RAID Storage System appears
as a letter drive. Depending on the VN-RAID model
chosen, the drive size (MB) should appear as a
number close to published storage capacity. Driver
letter assignments are generally assigned as
follows:

Setting Up the UPS for Proper Shutdown and Start Up
When the NVR/Workstation/Kollector is connected to a RAID device and a UPS battery backup, if power is lost, it
is important that the NVR/Workstation/Kollector shuts down properly and safely. When power is restored, the
system must start up in the proper order. This procedure describes the setup for Microsoft Windows®, the UPS
and NVR/Workstation/Kollector so that upon a power loss, the NVR/Workstation/Kollector will shut down safely;
when power is restored, the RAID must power on first to avoid problems with the NVR/Workstation/Kollector and
the ViconNet® system
Refer to the instruction manual for the UPS device as needed throughout this procedure.
NOTE: Testing was performed using the following equipment:
V725-UPS (APC power supply) with PowerChute® Personal Edition.
Kollector DVR (with external RAID) using Windows Embedded OS Version, L.2, N.2 & K (no other versions have
been approved at this time)
I. Physical Connections
Connect the RAID and NVR/Kollector to the UPS battery backup. (Each may have its own UPS or both can be
connected to the same UPS.) The connection between the RAID and UPS is a straight power connection. There
is no intelligent communication between these two devices. The connection between the UPS and the NVR/
Workstation/Kollector is a serial connection, with an RJ-45 on the UPS to a USB to the NVR/Workstation/
Kollector.
CAUTION: It is required that all physical connections are made before any of the software installation is
done. Make sure all devices are fully functional before beginning.
II. Installing the UPS software on the NVR/Kollector
The UPS is supplied with a software CD and instructional CD for installing the software. Before beginning the
installation, be sure to review all instructions.
1. Exit to O.S. from the Setup screen of ViconNet.
2. With the NVR/Workstation/Kollector operating, insert the CD into the CD-RW drive.
3. Follow the prompts to install the UPS (PowerChute) software. In general, the default settings are
adequate for most installations. Refer to the manual supplied with the UPS device for details on the
settings as required.
4. Go to My Computer and select Control Panel.
5. Double-click Display and select the Screen Saver tab.
6. In the Screen Saver screen, click the Power button and select the Hibernate tab. The Enable
hibernation box should NOT be checked (deselect if it is)
7. The UPS battery backup is now set to shutdown the NVR/Workstation/Kollector properly when power is
lost to the unit, after the specified amount of time, before the UPS also loses power.
III. Windows Setup
(This step is required on the Kollector; it is optional on the NVR, since it does impact on the startup time
of the PC)
Certain settings have to be made in Windows for this procedure to work properly.
1. Right click Start button, select Explore.
2. Go to My Computer and right click.
3. Select Properties and click the Advanced tab. Go to Startup and Recovery and click Settings.
4. Make sure the Time to display list of operating systems is checked and change that number to the
amount of time you want to delay the Kollector unit from starting after power is restored (180 seconds is
recommended).

5. Click on the Edit button related "To edit the startup options file manually, click Edit." The boot ini opens in
Notepad. The following is displayed or similar (line in bold is to be deleted as instructed below):

Leave the line space after timeout=180
Do not change anything else!
The entry then should read as follows:

NOTE: The other entries may be different than shown here; do not alter them!!!
6. Save and exit the boot file, then click OK twice to finish. To test, shutdown DVR thru Windows.
Restart. DVR will eventually display a Menu with boot OS options and the time to boot=180. Don't touch
the keyboard; wait till it counts down. The OS and then ViconNet should start.
NOTE: This setup will give the RAID unit time to startup before the Kollector starts. Vicon suggests making that
time 180 seconds.
IV. Operation
NVR/Workstation/Kollector
If power is lost, the UPS will beep to notify you that the UPS battery is now supplying power to the unit. The
NVR/Workstation/Kollector will safely shutdown in the amount of time programmed. While this is happening, there
will be a notification screen from ViconNet and from the UPS asking if you want to shutdown. Ignore these
prompts, as the unit has been programmed to shutdown properly on its own.
Note: After power is lost to the UPS, the UPS battery remains powered for 90 seconds before it completely shuts
down. In the event that power is restored before 90 seconds have elapsed, there is the possibility the
NVR/Workstation/Kollector will not turn back on automatically.
RAID
The RAID will stay on until the UPS battery runs out of power. When power is restored, the RAID will power on
first and the NVR/Workstation/Kollector screen will display a countdown to when it will be back up and running. A
UPS window will display to say power is restored. Do not hit any key while this process is running, as it will
interrupt the procedure.
