INSTALLATION
AND OPERATION
MODEL
Vl404L
MANUAL VIDEO SWITCHER
INTRODUCTION
BEZEL INSTALLATION
The following information covers the instal-
lation, operation, and maintenance of the
V1404L
Looping Manual Switcher.
The
V1404L
Switcher is a cascadable four-
position manual switcher. It is available
with an unterminated looped-through circuit
that is terminated at another point in the
video circuit. The
V1404L
features latching
push-button switches.
Each
V1404L
switcher is provided with four
different front bezels, with switch positions
numbered l-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16. This allows
each camera in an installation with cascaded
V1404L
switchers to have a unique number.
See Figure 1.
INSTALLATION
GENERAL
This video switcher is designed to provide
access to a video circuit while preserving the
termination of the video source.
As a looping switcher, this unit does not
provide any terminating impedance, but has a
loop-out connector for each video input. Systems
using looping switchers may redistribute the
video signals for viewing at additional monitors
and may be connected to other looping and/or
passive switchers for scene selection at a
remote site.
Figure 1
Front Panel, V1404L
Use the following procedure to install a bezel.
Each video signal must terminate with a 75-ohm
impedance to prevent picture degradation. If
the video signal is looped out to other equip-
ment, the last component in the series
must terminate with 75 ohms. Use either a
termination switch built into the equipment
or a
V75T
75-ohm terminator. Do not use
both since “double” termination also causes
picture degradation.
1. Select the appropriate bezel from the
accessory pack, and peel off the protective
paper cover, exposing the adhesive.
2. Press the bezel, carefully, into position on
the front of the Vl404L.
MODULE INSTALLATION
Any video signal that is not looped out of the
V1404L
must have a
V75T
terminator installed on
its loop-out connector. Four
V75Ts
are supplied.
Slide the module into the card cage or desktop
enclosure from front to back. Loosen the re-
taining bracket screw on the upper right corner
of the rear panel on the module. Push the
bracket up and tighten the screw. See Figure 2.

Rear Panel, V1404L
Looping switchers receive video inputs from the
row of BNC connectors marked IN. The number
of the connector corresponds to the number of
the associated switch on the front panel. Loop-
ing output connectors are also numbered and
should either be terminated as described above
or connected to the input of a terminating unit.
Connect the monitor to the BNC connector
labeled MON, located on the rear panel of
the switcher. When connecting the monitor to
a V1404L Looping Switcher, the monitor should
be set for 75-ohms termination if it is the last
unit in the video system.
INSTALLATION AS A TERMINATED
SWITCHER
There are four 75-ohm terminations supplied
with the unit. These are V75T Terminators.
The
V1404L
Looping Switcher is easily convert-
ed to a terminating switcher by installation of
the terminations on the OUT BNC connectors at
the rear of each switching module. Installation
of a
V75T
is accomplished by grasping the
knurled portion and carefully pushing the
terminator onto a BNC connector.
WARNING: When terminating connections are
A
made, be
certailz
that the applied termi-
nation will be the only one on the video
line. It is possible to double terminate a
line, resulting in color and signal
degradation.
CASCADING SWITCHERS

These switchers can be cascaded, allowing
installation of up to eight switchers in one
VP8RK,
V8DTB-
1, -2, or four switchers in the
V4DTB- 1, -2.
To cascade two or more switchers:
the operator can switch to CAMERA
1
without
deselecting CAMERA 3. If, however, the oper-
ator wishes to switch from CAMERA 3 to
CAMERA 4, he must first deselect the
CAMERA 3 switch. In a cascading series of
switchers, the operator must deselect all lower
numbered positions to view the last position.
1. Connect video input from cameras to Inputs
l-4 on the switchers. MAINTENANCE
2. Run a coaxial cable from the MON output
BNC on the last switcher in the series to
the EXP input BNC on the preceding switch-
er.
3. Connect each preceding switcher in the same
manner. The MON output of the first
switcher in the series connects to the
monitor. Refer to the Schematic Diagram,
Figure 5.
OPERATION
By pressing a numbered button on the front
panel, the unit displays, on the monitor, the
video scene selected by a camera at that po-
sition. To deselect it, press the button again.
This operation on a looping switcher will not
affect the scene displayed on a monitor con-
nected at another camera position.
The latching front panel switches are priority
wired, with priority on the lowest numbered
position. For example, if the CAMERA 3
position switch is selected for monitor viewing,
