Getting Started
Congratulations on your purchase o a VP201m/VP201mb color ViewPanel®.
Important! Save the original box and all packing material for future shipping
needs.
NOTE: The word “Windows” in this user guide re ers to the ollowing Microso t
operating systems: Windows ‘95, Windows NT, Windows ‘98, Windows 2000
and Windows Me (Millennium).

• ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM (including user guide PDF ile and INF/ICM
display optimization iles). (Note: Per ect PortraitTM so tware on CD-ROM
must be installed to use the ViewPanel in portrait mode.)
IMPORTANT: The supplied INF ile assures compatibility with Windows
operating systems, and the ICM ile (Integrated Color Management) assures
accurate on-screen colors.
Precautions
• For best viewing conditions sit at least 18"
rom the ViewPanel.
• AVOID TOUCHING THE SCREEN WITH
YOUR FINGERS. Oils rom the skin are
di icult to remove.
• NEVER REMOVE THE REAR COVER. The
ViewPanel contains high-voltage parts. You
may su er serious injury i you touch these
parts.
• Avoid exposing the ViewPanel to direct
sunlight or another heat source including an
open lame. The ViewPanel should be acing
away rom direct sunlight to reduce glare.
• Always handle your ViewPanel with care
when moving it.
• Place your ViewPanel in a well ventilated
area. Do not place anything on the ViewPanel
that prevents adequate dissipation o heat.
• Ensure the area around the ViewPanel is clean
and ree o moisture.
• Do not place heavy objects on theViewPanel,
video cable, or power cord.
• I smoke, abnormal noise, or strange odor is
present, immediately switch the ViewPanel
o andcallyourdealerorViewSonic.Itis
dangerous to continue using the ViewPanel.

Quick Installation
1 Connect video cable
Make sure both the ViewPanel®and
computer are powered OFF.
Connect the VGA analog video cable to the
computer then to the ViewPanel. Both
analog and digital (DVI-D) ports are
available on the back o the ViewPanel or
your convenience. The DVI-D cable
requires a DVI-D video card in your
computer.
Macintosh users: Models older than G3
require a Macintosh adapter. Attach the
adapter to the computer and plug the video
cable into the adapter.
To order a ViewSonic®Macintosh adapter,
contact ViewSonic ustomer Support.
2a Connect power cord
Connect the power cord rom the ViewPanel
to a properly grounded AC outlet.
2b Optional - Connect audio cable
Connect the supplied audio cable to the
Audio Out port on your computer sound
card.
3 Power-ON ViewPanel and
co puter
Power-ON the ViewPanel, then power-ON
the computer. This sequence (ViewPanel
be ore computer) is very important.
NOTE: Windows 95, 98 or 2000 users may
receive a message asking them to install the
VP201m/VP201mb INF ile.
4 Install display opti ization files
(INF and ICM files)
(1) Insert the ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM
into your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
NOTE: I your computer does not have a
CD-ROM drive, see Customer Support in
this user guide.
(2) Wait or the CD-ROM to auto-start.
NOTE: I the CD-ROM does not auto-
start: double-click on the CD-ROM icon in
the Windows Explorer, then double-click
on install.exe.
(3) Follow the on-screen instructions.
5 Windows users: Set the ti ing
ode (resolution and refresh
rate)
Example: 1600 X 1200 @ 60 Hz.
For instructions on changing the resolution
and re resh rate, see the user guide or your
computer's graphics card.
Installation is complete. Enjoy your new
VP201m/VP201mb ViewPanel.
To be best prepared or any uture customer
service needs: print this user guide and
write the serial number in "For Your
Records" on page 2. (See back o

Landscape/Portrait Modes
The VP201m/VP201mb ViewPanel can operate in either Landscape or Portrait
mode. Follow the instructions that accompany the Per ect Portrait so tware.
To switch rom Landscape (de ault) to Portrait mode, do the ollowing:
1From the ront, gently raise the ViewPanel to allow more clearance.
2Pull the bottom o the ViewPanel outward and away rom the base.
3Manually rotate the VP201m/VP201mb clockwise 90 degrees as shown
above.
To Raise and Lower the display
You can easily raise and lower the display panel (the head) manually. As you
ace the ront o the display, take hold o each side o the head and pull up or
down. The panel should move easily.
Note: Be ore using the portrait
display mode, irst install the Per ect
PortraitTM so tware included with
your VP201m/VP201mb ViewPanel.
Per ect Portrait so tware is
compatible with most PCI and AGP
graphics (video) cards.

Installation of Wall Mount (Optional)
To obtain a wall-mounting kit, contact ViewSonic or your local dealer. Re er to
the instructions that come with the base mounting kit.To convert your
ViewPanel rom a desk-mounted to a wall-mounted display, do the ollowing:
1Disconnect Power.
2Lay the ViewPanel ace down on
a towel or blanket.
3Pull the back plate away rom the
head o the ViewPanel. Let the
plate hang on the neck o the
ViewPanel as shown on the le t.
Notice the our screws.
4Remove the our screws rom the
back plate.
5Attach the mounting bracket
rom the VESA compatible wall-
mounting kit (100 m x 100 m
distance).
6Attach the ViewPanel to the wall,
ollowing the instructions in the
wall-mounting kit.

Using the ViewPanel
Setting the Ti ing Mode
Setting the timing mode is important or maximizing the quality o the screen
image and minimizing eye strain. The timing mode consists o the resolution
(example 1600 x 1200) and refresh rate (or vertical requency--example 60
Hz). A ter setting the timing mode, use the OnView®controls (pages 9 - 13) to
adjust the screen image.
For the best picture quality set your ViewPanel®timing mode to:
VESA 1600 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
To set the Timing Mode:
1Set the resolution: Right-click on the Windows®desktop > Properties >
Settings > Desktop Area or Screen Area or Windows 98 and newer > set
the resolution.
2Set the re resh rate: See your graphic card's user guide or instructions.
WARNING: Do not set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the
maximum re resh rate o 75 Hz @1280 x 1024 and lower resolutions. Do not
exceed 1600 x 1200 @ 60 Hz; doing so may result in permanent damage to your
ViewPanel.
OSD Lock Mode
This mode locks all current control settings and prevents access to the control
menus until this mode is unlocked.
• To lock all OSD menus, press and hold both the [1] button and the ▲(up-
arrow) button or 10 seconds. While in this mode, when any button is pushed,
OSD Locked will display or ive seconds.
• To unlock the OSD menus, press and hold both the [1] button and the ▲(up-
arrow) button or 10 seconds.

Adjusting the Screen I age
Use the buttons on the ront control panel to display and adjust the OnView®
controls rom ViewSonic®. The controls are explained in the steps at the top o
the next page and are urther explained in the menu controls on the next ew
pages.

Do the following to adjust the screen i age:
1To display the Main Menu, press button [1]. From the Main Menu you can
also navigate to the other menus shown below:
NOTE: All OnView menus and adjustment screens disappear automatically
a ter about 10 seconds (de ault). This time can be changed on the OSD Time
Out menu.
2To highlight a control you want to adjust, press ▲or ▼to scroll up or down
the Main Menu.
3To select the highlighted control, press button [2].
4To adjust the selected control, press the up ▲or down ▼buttons.
5To save the adjustments and exit the menu, press button [1] twice.
The following tips ay help you opti ize your display:
• Adjust your computer's graphic card so that it outputs a video signal 1600 x
1200 @ 60Hz to the VP201m/VP201mb. (Look or instructions on "changing
the re resh rate" in your graphic card's user guide.)
• I necessary, make small adjustments using H POSITION and V POSITION
until the screen image is completely visible. (The black border around the
edge o the screen should barely touch the illuminated "active area" o the
ViewPanel®.)
• Adjust Fine Tune so that the screen image looks ocused, crisp, and sharp.

Main Menu Controls
The menu items shown below can be adjusted by using the up ▲ and down ▼
buttons.
Control Explanation
Auto I age Adjust automatically sizes, centers, and ine tunes
the video signal to eliminate waviness and distortion.
Press the [2] button to obtain a sharper image.
NOTE: Auto Image Adjust works with most common video
cards. I this unction does not work on your ViewPanel®,then
lower the video re resh rate to 60 Hz and set the resolution to its
pre-set value.
NOTE: Not available or digital mode.
Contrast/Brightness Contrast adjusts the di erence between
the image background (black level) and the oreground (white
level). Brightness adjusts background black level o the screen
image. Press button [2] to toggle between Contrast and
Brightness.
Manual I age Adjust brings up the Image Adjust controls
explained below.
H./V. Position adjusts horizontal and vertical position o the
screen image. You can toggle between Horizontal and Vertical
by pressing button [2]. Horizontal moves the screen image to the
le t or to the right. Vertical moves the screen image up and down.
NOTE: Not available or digital mode.
H. Size adjusts the width o the screen image.
NOTE: Not available or digital mode.
Fine Tune Eliminates any remaining video arti acts (noise,
banding, out-o -phase, etc.)
NOTE: Try Auto Image Adjust irst.
NOTE: Not available or digital mode.
Zoo expands and contracts the entire screen image.

Color Adjust provides two color adjustment modes: Color
Temperature Select as shown below and User Color. Color
Temperature Select allows you to choose a preset color
temperature. User Color allows you to make individual
adjustments or red, green, and blue (RGB).
9300K — Adds blue to the screen image or cooler white (used
in most o ice settings with luorescent lighting).
6500K — Adds red to the screen image or warmer white and
richer red.
5400K — Adds green to the screen image or a darker color.
5000K — Adds blue and green to the screen image or a darker
color.
RGB — Individual adjustments or red, green, and blue.
1Toselectcolor(R,GorB)pressbutton[2].
2To adjust selected color, press ▲or ▼.
When you are inished making all color adjustments, press
button [1] twice.
Advanced Menu brings up the Advanced Menu controls
explained below.
Me ory Recall returns adjustments to the original actory
settings i the display is operating in a actory Preset Timing
Mode listed in this user guide.
Exception: This control does not a ect changes made with the
User Color control.

Scaling adjusts the video input signal to the screen size using
the listed options.
Fill All will stretch the image to ill the ull screen.
Fill Aspect Ratio will stretch the image to ill one direction,
while maintaining the aspect ratio.
1:1 will show the exact resolution o your video card setting,
centered on your screen.
Sharpness adjusts the clarity and ocus o the screen image.
Infor ation option displays the timing mode (video signal
input) coming rom the graphics card in your computer. See your
graphic card’s user guide or instructions on changing the
resolution and re resh rate (vertical requency).
NOTE: VESA 1600 x 1200 @ 60Hz (recommended) means that
the resolution is 1600 x 1200 and the re resh rate is 60 Hertz.
Setup Menu brings up the Setup Menu controls explained
below.
Input Select allows you to toggle between two input signals:
analog and digital.
Language Select allows you to choose the language used in the
menus and control screens.
OSD Position allows you to move the on-screen display menus
and control screens.
OSD Ti e Out sets the length o time the on-screen display
screen is displayed. For example, with a “15 second” setting, i a
control is not pushed within 15 seconds, the display screen
disappears.

Troubleshooting
No power
• Make sure power button (or switch) is ON.
• Make sure A/C power cord is securely connected to the DC power supply
and the power supply is irmly connected to the ViewPanel®.
• Plug another electrical device (like a radio) into the power outlet to veri y that
the outlet is supplying proper voltage.
Power on but no screen i age
• Make sure the video cable supplied with the ViewPanel is tightly secured to
the video output port on the back o the computer. I the other end o the
video cable is not attached permanently to the ViewPanel, tightly secure it to
the ViewPanel.
• Adjust brightness and contrast.
• I you are using an Macintosh older than G3, you need a Macintosh adapter.
Wrong or abnor al colors
• I any colors (red, green, or blue) are missing, check the video cable to make
sure it is securely connected. Loose or broken pins in the cable connector
could cause an improper connection.
• Connect theViewPanel to another computer.
• I you have an older graphics card, contact ViewSonic ®or a non-DDC
adapter.
Control buttons do not work
• Press only one button at a time.

Cleaning the ViewPanel
• MAKE SURE THE VIEWPANEL®IS TURNED OFF.
• NEVER SPRAY OR POUR ANY LIQUID DIRECTLY ONTO THE
SCREEN OR CASE.
To clean the screen:
1Wipe the screen with a clean, so t, lint- ree cloth. This removes dust and
other particles.
2I still not clean, apply a small amount o non-ammonia, non-alcohol based
glass cleaner onto a clean, so t, lint- ree cloth, and wipe the screen.
To clean the case:
1Use a so t, dry cloth.
2I still not clean, apply a small amount o a non-ammonia, non-alcohol
based, mild non-abrasive detergent onto a clean, so t, lint- ree cloth, then
wipe the sur ace.
Disclai er
ViewSonic®does not recommend the use o any ammonia or alcohol-based
cleaners on the ViewPanel screen or case. Some chemical cleaners have been
reported to damage the screen and/or case o the ViewPanel.ViewSonic will not
be liable or damage resulting rom use o any ammonia or alcohol-based cleaners.

Li ited Warranty
VIEWSONIC LCD VIEWPANEL®
What the warranty covers:
ViewSonic®warrants its products to be free from defects in materia and workmanship during the
warranty period. If a product proves to be defective in materia or workmanship during the warranty
period, ViewSonic wi , at its so e option, repair or rep ace the product with a ike product. Rep acement
product or parts may inc ude remanufactured or refurbished parts or components.
How long the warranty is effective:
ViewSonic LCD ViewPane s are warranted for three (3) years for a parts inc uding the ight source and
three (3) years for a abor from the date of the first consumer purchase.
Who the warranty protects:
This warranty is va id on y for the first consumer purchaser.
What the warranty does not cover:
1. Any product on which the seria number has been defaced, modified or removed.
2. Damage, deterioration or ma function resu ting from:
a. Accident, misuse, neg ect, fire, water, ightning, or other acts of nature, unauthorized product
modification, or fai ure to fo ow instructions supp ied with the product.
b. Repair or attempted repair by anyone not authorized by ViewSonic.
c. Any damage of the product due to shipment.
d. Remova or insta ation of the product.
e. Causes externa to the product, such as e ectrica power f uctuations or fai ure.
f. Use of supp ies or parts not meeting ViewSonic’s specifications.
g. Norma wear and tear.
h. Any other cause which does not re ate to a product defect.
3. Remova , insta ation, and set-up service charges.
How to get service:
1. For information about receiving service under warranty, contact ViewSonic Custo er Support.
You wi need to provide your product's seria number.
2. To obtain service under warranty, you wi be required to provide (a) the origina dated sa es s ip, (b) your
name, (c) your address, (d) a description of the prob em, and (e) the seria number of the product.
3. Take or ship the product freight prepaid in the origina container to an authorized ViewSonic ser-
vice center or ViewSonic.
4. For additiona information or the name of the nearest ViewSonic service center, contact
ViewSonic.

IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING POWER CORD SELECTION
The power cord set for this unit has been enc osed and has been se ected according to the country of
destination and must be used to prevent e ectric shock. Use the fo owing guide ines if it is necessary to
rep ace the origina cord set, or if the cord set is not enc osed.

For the United States and Canada
In the United States and Canada the ma e p ug is a NEMA5-15 sty e (Figure A2), UL Listed, and CSA
Labe ed. For units which are mounted on a desk or tab e, type SVT or SJT cord sets may be used. For
units which sit on the f oor, on y SJT type cord sets may be used. The cord set must be se ected according
to the current rating for your unit. P ease consu t the tab e be ow for the se ection criteria for power cords
used in the United States and Canada.
For European Countries
In Europe you must use a cord set which is appropriate for the receptac es in your country. The cord set is HAR-
Certified, and a specia mark that wi appear on the outer sheath, or on the insu ation of one of the inner conductors.
