Operating the radio whilst
driving
Modern trafficconditionsdemandthe con-
stantattentionofroadusers.
Besides awealthofentertainment,modern
car radios, with theirrangeofsophisticated
features,alsoprovidea greatdealofin-
formationabouttrafficandroadconditions,
etc.
However, the radio, with allits
possibilities,should only beusedif
conditions really allow it.
For example,changingcassettesorreading
cassette labelswhiledrivinghavefre-
quentlyledtodangeroussituations.
The volumeoftheradioshouldalsobeset
so that acousticsignalsfromoutsidecan
also beheard.
Warning
Please concentrate onyour driv-
ing above all!
Anti-Theft Coding
The anti-theft codingwillelectronicallypre-
ventunauthorizedpersonsfromoperating
the unit ifithasbeenremovedfromtheve-
hicle.
Iftheword "SAFE" isdisplayedwhenthe
radioisswitchedon,itcanonlybeoperated
byenteringthe correct code- seepage
13.
Thiscode number, together with the
unit's serial number, canbe found on
the"RadioCard"atthe front of this
instruction manual, next tothecon-
tacts.
Itis very important that you detach
this "RadioCard"and keep itina
safe place- never keep itintheve-
hicle.Only then isthe radio useless
to thieves!

Operating the radio
1- On/Offswitch
Theknobserves:
• Switchingon/off.
• Volumecontrol.
• Automaticstationsearch.
• Frequencysearch.
• Stationsearchsensitivity.
On/Off,
Volumecontrol
Turnthe knobto switch the radioonand
off and control the volume. Atthe same
time, the automaticaerial, if fitted,will ex-
tend. The frequencytuned in before the
radiowaslastswitched off willbereceived.
Ifthe radio ison when thekeyis removed
from the ignition, it automaticallyswitches
off.
If thekeyisputorturnedintheignitionlock,
theradioswitches on automatically.
Withtheignitionkeyremoved,theradiocan
be switchedbackon bybrieflypressing
theknoborby switching offandon
again.It willswitch off againautomatically
afterapprox.1 hour.Thisprocesscan be re-
peated as often asis required.
When the unit is switched off,a flashing
LED indicates that the radio is equipped
with an activatedAnti-Theft Code.
If theradio unit makesnonoiseafterswitch-
ing on and "SAFE" is shown inthe display,
please refer tothe operatingnotes asof
page 13.

Automatic stationsearch
Press the knob tostartthestation
search.Theradiosearches up-band, selects
thefirststationwitha strongsignaland
playsthis. Afterapprox.5 secondsthesta-
tion finderautomaticallymovesontothe
nextstation (SCAN function)..Bypressing
theknobagainwithinthese5 seconds,the
station currentlyselectedisconfirmed.
Frequencysearch
Bypressingandholdingtheknob,adesired
frequencycanbe"approached".Todothis,
releaseknob just beforethedesired fre-
quencyisreached.Thefrequencysearch
thenstopsatthenextstationwitha strong
signal.
Stationsearchsensitivity
After switching on, changingwavebandsor
selectinga presetchannel,theradio will
automaticallyselect "LOCAL" search
sensitivity.Inthismode,onlystationswith
astrongsignalareselected.Afterrunning
throughthewavebandonce,thestation
finder automaticallyswitchestohigher
sensitivity.Theletters"DX"(distancere-
ception)appearinthedisplay.
Thesearchsensitivity canbeswitched
manuallytodistancereceptionbypressing
knob twice. Inthis case too, theletters
"DX"appearinthedisplay.
Theunit will then alsosearch for weakersig-
nals.
Note
30secondsaftera stationhasbeen con-
firmed, theunitautomaticallyswitches
backto "LOCAL".

Thisautomaticallysettheradio to TPmode

Note
•Even if thevolume issetto "veryquiet",
announcements are made atan easily aud-
iblevolume.
• If the range of theselected TP station is
left, the automaticstationsearchstarts
afterapprox. 30 seconds.
Interrupting a trafficnews
announcement
Insomesituations it canoccurthat a traffic
newsannouncement is interrupted, e.g.:
- The announcementdoes not apply to
thisstretch of road.
- The announcement is verylongand the
partconcerningthisstretch of road is
complete.
•Press the TA or TPbuttonduring an an-
nouncement.
Theannouncement is interruptedandprevi-
ousoperatingmode(cassette or radio) is
continued. Subsequenttrafficnews an-
nouncementswillstill be heard.
Select "FM" or "AS" toswitchoffTA
mode.

Attheendofthetape,the unit automatically
switchestoradiomode.
Cassette mode and traffic news
Whena cassetteisinserted,the unit auto-
maticallyswitchestocassettemode.
IfTPmodeisthenselected,cassetteplay-
backis interrupted for traffic newsan-
nouncements.
Ifthe transmitting rangeofthestationis
left, theradioautomaticallyselectsa new
traffic newsstation.
A traffic newsannouncementcanbe inter-
ruptedto return tocassetteplaybackby
pressingtheTPorTAbutton.
Any subsequent traffic newsannounce-
ment will stillbeplayed.

Toensuretrouble-freecassetteplay,use
onlycassettesmadebywell-knownmanu-
facturers.
Ifa pre-recordedcassetteshowssignsof
defect,itisadvisabletocopyitontoa cas-
settemadebya well-knownmanufacturer.
Topreventdefectscausedbythetapes
themselves,itisrecommended that there-
cording time oftapesusednotexceed90
minutes(C90cassettes).Sixtyminute cas-
settes(C60)arewellsuitedforuse.
Donot stick additional labels onthe
cassette casing.Duetothe heat
generated during cassette oper-
ation, these could become looseand
cause malfunctioning!
Never leavecassettesinthecarforlong
periodswhentheyareexposedtoverylow
(lessthan+140 F/-100 C)orveryhightem-
peratures(above1220 F / + 500 C).Re-
member that temperaturesinsidethecar
can beconsiderablyhigherthanoutside
temperatures.
Also preventdirectexposuretosunlight.
Thebestplacetostorecassettesisinthe
hingedboxestheycomeinora Genuine
VolkswagenStorageBox with spooldetent,
whichisavailableformostvehicles.
Ifaftera while(approx.100hoursplay,de-
pendingontapetype)playbackbecomes
unclear,itcouldbe that thetapeheadis
soiled with tapeparticles.Thesecanbe
cleanedawayusinga wetcleaning cas-
sette.Onlyusecleaningtapesmadebywell
knownmanufacturersandfollowthemanu-
facturer'sinstructions.
Anti-theft coding
Whenthe unit isswitchedoff,anLED2 to
the left ofthecassetteslotflashes.This
shows that theradiohas anti-theft coding.
The anti-theft coding will electronicallypre-
ventunauthorizedpersons from operating
the unit ifithasbeenremoved from theve-
hicle.
Whenever:
-Theradioisdisconnected from theve-
hiclecurrentsupply
-The battery isdisconnected
-Theelectricfusefortheradioisblown
theword "SAFE" will appearinthedisplay
whentheradioisswitchedon.The unit will
only work againifthe correct codehas
beenentered.

Cancellingthe electronic lock
Ifforanyreasonyourradiohasbeenelec-
tronicallylocked- forexampleifthebattery
has beendisconnectedortheradiofusehas
blown- theword "SAFE" willappearinthe
display whentheradioisswitchedon.
To canceltheelectroniclock,youmust
enterthe correct codenumber.
Itisessential that thefollowingstepsbe
carriedoutinthecorrectorder:
•Turnontheradio- theword "SAFE" ap-
pears inthedisplay.
• Press TAandTPbuttonsatthe same
time untilthefigure"1000"appearsinthe
digitaldisplayRelease buttons! Onno
accountholdtheTAandTP buttons
orpress them again orthe number
1000 will beassumedasthecode!
•Usestationsbuttons1 to4 toinputthe
code numberonyourRadio Card. Usebut-
ton1 toinputthe first digitofthecode
number,button2 toinputtheseconddigit,
and soon.
•FinallypressbuttonsTPandTAatthe
same timeuntiltheword "SAFE" appears.
Release buttons.Aftera briefpause,a fre-
quency willautomaticallyappear.
The radio cannowbeusedagain!
Incorrect Code Number
Should youinadvertentlyinputtheincorrect
code numberinattemptingtoreleasethe
electroniclock,theword "SAFE" willap-
pear inthedisplay- first blinkingandthen
continuously.
You cannowrepeattheentirecancelling
procedureonce.Thenumberofattempts
willbeshowninthedisplay.
Ifyouinputanotherincorrectnumber,your
radiowillbelockedforapproximatelyone
hour.Theradiowillnotplay.Leavetheradio
switchedonandthekeyintheignition.
Afteran hour,thedisplay with thenumber
ofattemptsgoesoutandyoucancancelthe
electroniclockasdescribedabove.
This cycle- twoattempts,onehourlock-
willremainthesame.
Note
Ifthe radio card with code number
shouldbelost,please contact a
Volkswagen dealer. They will be
able to help you free ofcharge.

Thewarrantyconditionsthatapplytoour
new cars alsoapplytoourradiosystems.

Ifa warrantyclaimismadeduringthewar-
rantyperiod,theunit will berepairedfreeof
charge byanyVolkswagendealer-provided
thatthedamagewasnotcausedbyim-
propertreatmentorattemptstorepairitby
non-qualifiedpersons,andthattheunithas
noexternaldamage.
Exchangeservice
After expirationofthewarrantyperiod, a
radioinneedofrepaircanbeexchangedat
areasonablepricefor a completelyrecondi-
tioned ratioinas-newconditioncoveredby
anexchange-partwarranty.However,this is
onlyontheconditionthattheradiohasno
externaldamage andthatnounauthorized
personhasattemptedtorepairit.
Note:
Whenyouplacea warrantyclaimormake
useofthe exchange service,youmustal-
ways presentyourRadioCard with thecode
numberandserialnumberstotheVolk-
swagendealer!
Radio registration
Undercertaincircumstances,itmaybe
necessarytoregistertheradio.
InGermany,forexample:
Radiosusedincompany cars mustberegis-
teredwiththerelevantauthorities.
Care of aerial
Theaerialisoptimallymatched totheradio
andinstalledinthepositiongivingbest
possiblereceptionandminimuminterfer-
ence.
Vehicleswithscreenaerialshavetheadded
advantagesthatthereisno risk ofdamage
orwear.
Care: A dirtytelescopicaerialisdifficultto
push inandmayevenbebentinthepro-
cess.Whenthecariswashed,dryoffthe
aerialandcleanitfrom timetotimewith
ordinarychromecleaner. This alsoapplies
to black-chromedaerials.
Automaticaerialsmustalsobecleanedreg-
ularlyandtreatedwitha chromecleanerto
ensuresmoothoperation.
Iftheautomaticaerialdoesnotretractorex-
tendproperly,thetelescopicsectionsmust
be cleaned. Neverforciblypush in or pull out
theaerialbyhand.
Nomaintenanceisrequiredonaerialsincor-
poratedinthewindscreenorroof.
