Operatingtheradiowhilst
driving
Modern trafficconditionsdemandthecon-
stantattention of roadusers.
Besides a wealth of entertainment,modern
carradios,withtheir range of sophisticated
features,alsoprovide a greatdeal ofin-
formation abouttrafficandroadconditions,
etc.
However,theradio,withallits
possibilities,shouldonlybeusedif
conditionsreallyallowit.
Forexample,changingcassettesorreading
cassettelabelswhiledrivinghavefre-
quentlyledtodangeroussituations.
Thevolume of theradioshouldalso beset
sothatacoustic signals fromoutside can
also be heard.

Convenienceradiocoding
Fortechnicalreasons, the convenience
radiocoding is not available forall vehicle
models.
Inthepastonehadtorecodetheradioman-
uallyeverytime the unit was removed or
when the vehiclebattery had beendisen-
gaged.
That hasallchangedwiththenewconveni-
enceradiocodingfunction:Oncethecode
number has beeninput inthe radio, it will
thensynchroniseitselfwith"its"vehicle!
Ifthe currentsupply has beeninterrupted^^
theradio will automatically check tosee if it /
isstill in "its"vehicleaftertheignition has
beenswitchedon. Ifitis happy, the radio
will be ready foruse after just a few sec-
onds.
Itis thereforenolongernecessarytodisen-
gage theelectroniclockmanually!
Ifthe radio has beenfitted to another ve-
hicle, however,theelectroniclock will have
to be disengagedmanually.
This code number, togetherwiththe
unit'sserial number, can be found onjt~
the"RadioCard"atthefrontof this /
instructionmanual,nexttothe con-
tacts.
Itisveryimportantthatyoudetach
this "RadioCard"andkeepitina
safeplace- neverkeepitintheve-
hicle.Onlythenistheradio useless
to thieves!
CDmode
This car radioalsohastheattractiveoption
ofcontrolling the GenuineVolkswagen CD
changer1) orCD player11.
Theoperation of theunits is describedin a
separatemanual.
Volkswagendealershave all theinformation
concerningtheretrofitting of theseunits. |

Theknobserves:

Brieflypress the knob toswitchthe
radioonandoff.
The frequencyandvolumesettingsused
beforetheradiowaslastswitchedoffwill
be reactivated.
Iftheradioisonwhenthekeyisremoved
fromtheignition,itautomaticallyswitches
^off.
VThe radiowillswitchonautomaticallyifthe
key isreplacedintheignitionandturned.
The radiocanbeswitchedonagainwhen
theignitionkeyhasbeenremovedbypres-
sing therotary/ pushknob(1).Itwillswitch
offautomaticallyapproximately 1 hourafter
thekeyhasbeenremovedtoensure that
thebatterydoesnotrun flat.
This procedurecan,however,berepeated
as oftenasrequired.
When the unit isswitchedoffandtheigni-
tion keyhasbeenremoved,aflashingdiode
(see page12)indicates that theradiois
equipped with anactivatedAnti-Theft
Code.
Iftheradio unit makesnonoiseafterswitch-
ingonand "SAFE" isshowninthedisplay,
please refertotheoperatingnotesasof
page 21.
Thevolume canbesetby turning the
knob

the scale valueinthedisplaycanbesetby

TrafficProgramfunctions
BybrieflypressingtheTP/Setbutton,you
choosetheTPmodeandsetastationwith
trafficinformation.A TAreadymode
(TrafficAnnouncement)issetupatthe
sametime.
Theletters"TP"appearinthedisplay-see
point20.
Ilfthecurrentstationisnota TPstation,the
radioautomaticallyselectsthelastTP sta-
tionlistenedto(LastStationMemory).
Ifthisstationis cannotbereceived,the
radiowillautomaticallysearchforthenext
TPstationwitha strongsignal."NOTPTP-
SEEK"appearsinthedisplay.The letters
"TP" appearinthedisplayasconfirmation
thata TPstationis beingreceived.
Ifyouleavetherangeoftheselected sta-
tion, youshouldtunetoanotherstation.
Thefrequenciesandnamesofstations
broadcastingtrafficnewsannouncements
arefrequentlypostedalongmotorwaysand
trunkroads.
Itispossibletostore6 trafficinformation
stationsintheTPmode.
TAreadymode
TheTAreadymodemakesitpossibleto
listentotrafficinformationreportsexclus-
ively.Thesereportswillbeplayedatthe
programmedvolume,evenwhenthe vol-
umeissetat"veryquiet"- pleasealsorefer
topage8.Iftherangeofthesettrafficin-
formationstationisleft,thestationsearch
functionwillstartafterapproximately30
seconds.
Interruptinga trafficnewsan-
nouncement
Insomesituationsitcanoccurthata traffic
newsannouncementis interrupted,e.g.:

-Theannouncementis verylongandthe
partconcerningthisstretchofroadis
complete.
PresstheTP/setbuttonduringthean-
nouncementwhichistobeinterrupted.
Theannouncementisinterruptedandthe
previousoperatingmode- cassette,radio
orCD- is resumed.Subsequenttraffic
newsannouncementswillstillbeheard.

Ifthereceptionqualitybecomesworse,the

However,ifthequalitybecomesobad that
receptionbecomes intermittent, theradio
willalsoacceptfrequenciesofa "related"
station:
Programme1 oftheNDRbroadcasting
company,forinstance,transmitsdifferent
regionalprogrammestoSchleswig-Hols-
tein(indicator:"NDR 1 SH"),Hamburgindi-
cator:"NDR 1 HH")andLowerSaxony(indi-

As thesestationstransmitdifferentre-
gionalprogrammes,a changeoffrequency
maywellmeanachangeofprogrammetoo.
Withthe"Auto REG/REG OFF"functionit
is possibletotellthesystemwhetherornot
itshouldonlyreceivealternativefre-
quencies with identicalprogrammesusing
theRDSsignali.e.otherregionalstations

- RDS button
First ofallRDS (RadioDataSystem),
makes it possible to show the name ofthe
stationbeingreceived inthe display - "NDR
2", for example.
Previously, for stationsbroadcasting on
severalfrequencies, youhadto manually
tune the radio to stationfrequencywith
bestreception asyou travelledfrom one
area tothe next.This was frequently
necessarywhenreceptionconditionswere
poor.
Now, RDS automaticallyselects the
bestfrequencyfrom a list of alternativefre-
quencies and tunes the radio toit. Thispro-
cess is almostentirelyinaudible!
^Thisensuresyou the bestpossiblerecep-
tion in atransmittingrangeevenunderunfa-
vourablereceptionconditions.
Operating RDS
• TheRDSis switchedon/off by pressing
the RDS button.
"RDS ON" appears inthe displaywhen the
unit is switched on.
"RDS OFF" appearsbriefly inthe display
when the unit is switched off.
WhenRDS is switchedoff, the radiowill not
automaticallytransfer to alternativefre-
quencies.
If the radio is switched onandtheRDSis
switched off, "RDSOFF"willappearbriefly
in the display.
•Whenselecting a new frequency (e.g.
stationsearch,stationbuttons etc.)RDSis
automaticallyswitched on again.
When theRDSis switched on, stations
which arenot transmittingusing RDScan
still be received. Itis thereforerecom-

German broadcastingcompaniesbroadcast
some programmes that varyfromonere-
giontothenext.
Programme 1 oftheNDRbroadcasting
company, forinstance,transmitsdifferent
regionalprogrammestoSchleswig-Hols-
tein(indicator:"NDR 1 SH"),Hamburgindi-
cator:"NDR1HH")andLowerSaxony(indi-
cator:"NDR1 NDS").
The radio first triestocollectonlyalternative
frequencies fortheselectedstation.
However, ifthequalitybecomesobad that
receptionbecomes intermittent, theradio
willalsoacceptfrequenciesofa "related"
NDR1 station.Assuchstationsbroadcast
differentprogrammesfromtimetotime,
such a changeinfrequencycanalsoresult
ina differentprogrammebeingheard.
For thisreasontheradiosaresetupinthe
factoryso that RDSsystemwillonlyselect
regionalstationswhichhaveidenticalpro-
grammecontent.
Ifthereisa change,however,the"Auto
REG" settingintheset-upmenumustbe
activated(seepage10).
Generalnotes onRDS reception
•Dependingonthestrengthofthesignals
received, itmaytaketheradiouptoseveral
minutestoevaluatetheRDSdata.
•Inunfavourablereceptionconditions
(e.g. inmountainousareas),theradiowill
search foralternativefrequencies with
greatregularity.Thiscangiverisetobrief
muting.
•In cases ofextremelybadreception!
wheremutingand/ordistortionsarefre-
quent,theRDScanbetemporarily
switchedoff.
• RDS alwaysselectsthemostfavourable
frequencyfroma listofalternativefre-
quencies. Ifnoneofthealternativespro-
vides a clearsignal,youwill,ofcourse,also
hear interferenceinRDSmode!
•ItisnotpossibletoevaluateRDSdata
whenthesignalreceivedistooweak.Inthis
case thefrequencywillremaininthedis-

Storing RDS stations
When storing RDS stations,theappropriate
station button shouldnotbepressed until
thestationnameappearsinthedisplay.This
ensures that allRDSinformationhasbeen
evaluatedand,whereappropriate,auto-
maticallystored.
Whenselectingstored RDS stations,
therespectivestationnameappears.Ifthe
storedfrequencyisnotavailable,theradio'
automaticallyselectsa suitablealternative
frequency(Beststationfunction).
if none ofthestoredalternativefre-
quencies areavailable,thedesiredstation
cannotbereceived.A differentstation
should beselected.

tionistransmittedtotheRDSreceiver.

• Alternative Frequencies
(AF code)
Since therangeofFMradiowavesisquite
limited,stationsbroadcastfromseveral
transmittersonvariousfrequencies.TheAF
code providestheradio with a listoffre-
quencies onwhichthestationbroadcasts.
The radioisthusabletotunetothefre-
quency with thebestreception.
The radioswitchesfromoncefrequencyto
anothervirtuallyinaudibly,andthestation
nameshowninthedisplayremainsun-
changed.
A practical example:
On a trip ontheAutobahnfromFlensburgto
GottingenyouwouldliketolistentoNDR2.
All youhavetodoistunetothisstationat
thebeginningofyourtrip.Thestationname
-"NDR2"- lightsupinthedisplay.
Duringyourentiretrip,yourRDSradio
searches foralternativefrequenciesforthe
selected stationand,whennecessary,
tunestothemautomaticallyandvirtuallyin-
audibly.
