Important notes
Operating the radio whilst
driving
Modern trafficconditionsdemand the con-
stantattention of roadusers.
Besides a wealth of entertainment,modern
car radios, with theirrange of sophisticated
features,alsoprovide a greatdeal ofin-
formationabouttrafficandroadconditions,
etc.
However, the radio, with allits
possibilities,should only be used if
conditions really allow it.
For example,changingcassettesorreading
cassette labelswhiledrivinghavefre-
quentlyled to dangeroussituations.
The volume ofthe radioshouldalso beset
so that acousticsignalsfromoutside can
also be heard.
Warning
Please concentrate on your driv-
ing above all!
Convenience radio coding
For technicalreasons, the convenience
radiocoding isnot available forall vehicle
models.
Inthepastonehad to recodetheradioman-
uallyeverytime the unit wasremoved or
when the vehiclebatteryhadbeendisen-
gaged.
Thathasallchanged with thenewconveni-
ence radiocodingfunction:Once the code
numberhasbeeninput inthe radio, it will
thensynchroniseitself with "its"vehicle!
Ifthe currentsupplyhasbeeninterrupted
theradiowillautomaticallycheck to see ifit
is still in "its"vehicleaftertheignition has
been switchedon. Ifitis happy, the radio
will be ready for useafter just a few sec-
onds.
It isthereforenolongernecessary to disen-
gage the electroniclockmanually!
Ifthe radiohasbeen fitted to another ve-
hicle, however,theelectroniclockwillhave
to be disengagedmanually.
Thiscode number, together with the
unit's serial number, can be found or\
the"RadioCard" atthe front of this
instruction manual, next tothe con-
tacts.
Itis very important that you detach
this "RadioCard" and keep itina
safe place - never keep itintheve-
hicle.Only then isthe radio useless
to thieves!
CDmode
This carradioalsohastheattractiveoption
ofcontrolling the GenuineVolkswagenCD
changer1) or CDplayer1'.
The operation ofthe units is described ina
separate manual.
Volkswagen dealershavealltheinformation
concerning the retrofitting of theseunits.
Can be delivered as fitted from the factory.
The unitsshould be fitted bya Volkswagen
dealer iftobe installed at a laterdate.

n- Rotary / Push knob
The knob serves:
• Switching on/off.
• Volume control.
•Sound setting
On/Off,
Volume control
Briefly pressthe knob toswitchthe
radioonandoff.
The frequencyandvolumesettingsused
beforetheradiowaslastswitchedoffwill
be reactivated.
Iftheradioisonwhenthekeyisremoved
fromtheignition,itautomaticallyswitches
.off.
'The radiowillswitchonautomaticallyifthe
key isreplacedintheignitionandturned.
The radiocanbeswitchedonagainwhen
theignitionkeyhasbeenremovedbypres-
sing therotary/ pushknob(1).Itwillswitch
offautomaticallyapproximately 1 hourafter
thekeyhasbeenremovedtoensure that
thebatterydoesnotrun flat.
This procedurecan,however,berepeated
as oftenasrequired.
When the unit isswitchedoffandtheigni-
tionkeyhasbeenremoved,aflashingdiode
(see page14)indicates that theradiois
equipped with anactivatedAnti-Theft
Code.
Iftheradio unit makesnonoiseafterswitch-
ingonand "SAFE" isshowninthedisplay,
please refertotheoperatingnotesasof
page 25.
The volume canbesetby turning the
knob.
Sound setting
Afterpressingoneofthefoursoundsetting

the scale valueinthedisplaycanbesetby

TheTAreadymodemakesitpossibleto
listentotrafficinformationreportsexclus-
ively.Thesereportswillbeplayedatthe
programmedvolume,evenwhenthe vol-
umeis setat"veryquiet"- pleasealsorefer
topage9.Iftherangeofthesettrafficin-
formationstationis left,thestationsearch
functionwillstartafterapproximately30
seconds.
Interruptinga trafficnewsan-
nouncement
Insomesituationsitcanoccurthata traffic
newsannouncementisinterrupted,e.g.:
-Theannouncementdoesnotapplyto
thisstretchofroad.
-Theannouncementis verylongandthe
partconcerningthisstretchofroadis
complete.
PresstheTP/setbuttonduringthean-
nouncementwhichis tobeinterrupted.
Theannouncementisinterruptedandthe
previousoperatingmode- cassette,radio
orCD- is resumed.Subsequenttraffic
newsannouncementswillstillbeheard.
Itis possibletoswitchoffthetraffican-
nouncementsmodepermanentlybyexiting
theTPmode.

Set-up Menu
Ifthe TP/Set button is pressed for longer
than 2 seconds,specificsettings canbe
made andspecialRDSfunctionscan beset
via the display andthe rotary/pressknob
(1).
The individualset-upmenupoints canbe
selected usingeither the TP/Set button it-
self orby pressing oneofthetwo rocker
switches (see points 5 and
KEIIM MERKER). Any changesbetween
themenupointswill be indicated by means
of an acousticsignal.
The followingset-upmenupoints canbe
selected:
•GALA
•ONVOL
•TAVOL
•PHONE
• M/S
•AutoREG / REG OFF
•NAME FIX/ VAR
• CD SFL M/D
Ifthe TP/Set button is pressed for longer
than 2 seconds orno settingsaremade for
30seconds,thenanyalterationsmadewill
be stored andthe set-upmenuwill be
closed automatically.Thisclosingpro-
cedure will be indicated by means ofan
acoustic signal.
As roadspeedincreases, the noiselevel in
the car increasesaccordingly. Inthe past,
radiovolumehad tobe adjustedmanually.
GALA (Speeddependentvolume con-
trollwill now automaticallyadjust the vol-
ume in accordance with road speed.
The GALA functioncan besetto meetyour
individualrequirements:
•Select inthe menu: GALA. "SETUP
GALA" andthe currentvalue are shown in
thedisplay. ^
• The requiredlevel is adjusted by means
of the rotary/pressknob (1).The value
rangegoesfrom 1-9. GALA canbe
switched off with the "NO"setting.
Ifthe basicvolume hastobe reset(when
thestation or cassette is changed, for
example), simplyadjust the rotary/press
knob. Thevolumeadjustmentwillcontinue
tofunctionautomatically.
Note
TheGALA value cannot besetIf
your radio system has been aug-
mented bythe inclusion ofthe Digi-
tal SoundPackage (DSP)* from
Volkswagen. TheDSP controls the
GALA automatically.

Itis possible,usingthePHONEfunction,to

conversationtobeheardoverthe loud-
speakersystem,ifa mobilephonehasbeen
installed. Thevolumeofthisfunctioncan
alsobeset.
•Select:PHONEinthemenu.
"SETUPPHONE"and a valuefrom0-35are
showninthedisplay.
•Settherequiredvalueusingtherotary/
pressknob(1).
Thefunctioncanbeswitchedoffbyselect-
ing"0".
Itis nolongertousethetelephoneviathe
loudspeakersystemafterthefunctionhas
beenswitchedoff,andthediallingtoneis
nolongeraudible.Ifthetelephonerings,
"PHONE"willsimplybeshowninthedis-
playandtheradiowillbemuted.
M/S
UsingtheM/Sfunctionitis possibletoset
whetherornotthesystemshouldautomati-

Ifthereceptionqualitybecomesworse,the
radiowill first trytofindalternativefre-
quencies fortheselectedstation.
However,ifthequalitybecomesobad that
receptionbecomes intermittent, theradio
willalsoacceptfrequenciesofa "related"
station:
Programme1 oftheNDRbroadcasting
company,forinstance,transmitsdifferent
regionalprogrammestoSchleswig-Hols-
tein(indicator:"NDR 1 SH"),Hamburgindi-
cator:"NDR 1 HH")andLowerSaxony(indi-
cator:"NDR1 NDS").
As thesestationstransmitdifferentre-
gionalprogrammes,a changeoffrequency
maywellmeanachangeofprogrammetoo.
Withthe"Auto REG/REG OFF"functionit
is possibletotellthesystemwhetherornot
itshouldonlyreceivealternativefre-
quencies with identicalprogrammesusing

The MW wavelength canbe selected by

Brieflypress the manualsettingswitch -
thesearchwillstarted in thedirection asse-
lectedand the radiowillselect the first sta-
tionwith a strongsignal and thenstay at
thatfrequency.
Memorylist
Only onFM wavelength!
Yourradio is constantlyorientatingitself to
thestationfrequencies.Afterswitchingon,
itautomaticallystores all RDSstations (see
information asof page14) ina memorylist
according to their PI code.
Theradiouses thePI code(Programme
Identification) to identify a station, e.g.
NDR2).
It is possible to scanbackwards and for-
wardsthroughthislist by pressingeither
theleft orthe righthandside ofthe switch.

Example:
Thefollowingstations are contained inthe
list:
NDR 1, NDR2,Radio 3, NDR4,ANTENNE,

If youare listening to NDR2(displayreads
"NDR2"). By pressing the righthandside of

Use the lefthandside of theswitch to scan^~
thelistupwards - in thisexamplefrom
NDR2 to NDR1.
Ifa stationname isat a point in time not rec-
ognizable tothe unitonlythefrequencywill
beshown.Once the name has beenevalu-
ated, it will be shown inthe display.
If no station is available inthe memorylist,
theunitautomaticallyperforms a "learning
function" afterpressing oneofthe search
rockerswitches,duringwhichsound is
muted. "LEARN"willappear inthe display.
Cassetteoperation
Theswitch is used for fastforward andre-
windduringcassetteoperation, see page
23.
CDoperation
Theswitch is used for audiblefastforward
andreverse ofa trackduring CD operation.

Recording traffic reports
When theradioisswitchedon,everytraffic
reportofthecurrentstationwillberecorded
as soonas"TP"appearsinthedisplay.
The trafficreportsfromthenext2 hourswill
be automaticallyrecordedafterswitching
off,iftheTPfunctionhadbeenselected.
This canbeseeninthedisplay"TIM2 h".
A 24hourrecordingmodewillbeactivated
IiftheTIMbuttonisbriefly pressed whenthe
radioisswitchedoff.Thiscanbeseeninthe
display ofthelast-storedstationandthen
"TIM24h"inthedisplay.A differentstation
willautomaticallybeselectedifthelast
tunedstationisnot a TPstation.Thesystem
willbedeactivatedautomaticallyafter24
hoursinwaitingmodeorwhentheradiois
switchedon.Theannouncementswillthen

Previously,forstationsbroadcastingon

bestreceptionasyoutravelledfromone

Now,RDSautomaticallyselectsthe
bestfrequencyfroma listofalternativefre-
quenciesandtunestheradiotoit.Thispro-
cessisalmostentirelyinaudible!

•TheRDSisswitchedon/offbypressing
theRDSbutton.
"RDSON"appearsinthedisplaywhenthe
unitisswitchedon.
"RDSOFF"appearsbrieflyinthedisplay
whentheunitisswitchedoff.
WhenRDSisswitchedoff,theradiowillnot
automaticallytransfertoalternativefre-
quencies.
IftheradioisswitchedonandtheRDSis

Germanbroadcastingcompaniesbroadcast
someprogrammesthatvaryfromonere-
giontothenext.
Programme1 oftheNDRbroadcasting
company,forinstance,transmitsdifferent
regionalprogrammestoSchleswig-Hols-
tein (indicator:"NDR 1 SH"),Hamburg indi-
cator: "NDR1 HH")and Lower Saxony (indi-
cator: "NDR1 NDS").
Theradiofirsttriestocollectonlyalternative
frequenciesfortheselectedstation.
IHowever,ifthequalitybecomesobadthat
reception becomesintermittent,theradio
will alsoacceptfrequenciesofa "related"
NDR1station.Assuchstationsbroadcast
different programmesfromtimetotime,
sucha change infrequencycanalsoresult
ina differentprogrammebeingheard.
Forthisreasontheradiosaresetupinthe
factorysothatRDSsystemwillonlyselect
regionalstationswhichhaveidenticalpro-
grammecontent.
Ifthereisa change,however,the"Auto
REG"settingintheset-upmenumustbe
activated(see page 10).
Generalnotes onRDS reception
• Dependingonthestrengthofthe signals
received, itmaytaketheradiouptoseveral
i minutestoevaluatetheRDSdata.
• Inunfavourablereceptionconditions
(e.g.inmountainousareas),theradiowill
searchforalternativefrequencieswith
greatregularity. This can give risetobrief
muting.
• In cases ofextremelybadreception,
wheremutingand/ordistortionsarefre-
quent, theRDScanbetemporarily
switchedoff.
• RDSalwaysselectsthemostfavourable
frequencyfroma listofalternativefre-
quencies.Ifnoneofthealternativespro-
videsa clearsignal,you will, ofcourse,also
hearinterferenceinRDSmode!
• ItisnotpossibletoevaluateRDSdata
whenthe signal receivedistooweak. In this
case thefrequencywillremaininthedis-
play.
Storing RDS stations
When storingRDSstations,theappropriate
stationbuttonshouldnotbepresseduntil
thestationnameappearsinthedisplay. This
ensuresthatallRDSinformationhasbeen
evaluatedand,whereappropriate,auto-
maticallystored.
Whenselectingstored RDS stations,
therespectivestationnameappears.Ifthe
storedfrequencyisnotavailable,theradio
automaticallyselectsa suitablealternative
frequency (Best stationfunction).
if none ofthestoredalternativefre-
quenciesareavailable,thedesiredstation
cannotbereceived.A differentstation
shouldbeselected.

cover thewidestpossible area.
InadditiontonormalFMradiosignals,a
further,inaudibleflowofdigitalizedinforma-
tionistransmittedtotheRDSreceiver.
Amongst otherthings,thisinformation con-
trolsthefollowingfunctions.
• Programme Identification (PI
code)
The PIcodetellstheradiowhichstationis
currentlybeingreceived- e.g.NDR2.
• Programme Service Name (PS
code)
The PScodecontainsthestationname,
whichisthenshowninthedisplay.
Some stationsalsotransmitrunningadver-
tising text along with thestationname.Itis
possible tosetwhetherornotthisrunning
text shouldbeshownornotbyusingthe
"Name FIX/VAR" function.
• Alternative Frequencies
(AF code)
Since therangeofFMradiowavesisquite
limited,stationsbroadcastfromseveral
transmittersonvariousfrequencies.TheAF
code providestheradio with a listoffre-
quencies onwhichthestationbroadcasts.
The radioisthusabletotunetothefre-
quency with thebestreception.
The radioswitchesfromoncefrequencyto
anothervirtuallyinaudibly,andthestation
nameshowninthedisplayremainsun-
changed.
A practical example:
On a trip ontheAutobahnfromFlensburgto
GottingenyouwouldliketolistentoNDR2.
All youhavetodoistunetothisstationat
thebeginningofyourtrip.Thestationname
-"NDR2"- lightsupinthedisplay.
Duringyourentiretrip,yourRDSradio
searches foralternativefrequenciesforthe
selected stationand,whennecessary,
tunestothemautomaticallyandvirtuallyin-
audibly.

Larger broadcastingcompanies,e.g.NDR
oftenbroadcastdifferentprogrammes sim-
ultaneously- e.g.NDR1,NDR2,Radio3
etc.
Regardless ofwhichstationiscurrently
beinglistenedto,allTPannouncementsof
theotherprogrammesofthebroadcasting
company areplayed.
Example
The radioiscurrentlytunedtoRadio3.Ifa
TP announcementismadeon NDR2, the
radiowillautomaticallychangefrequencies
and the NDR2 announcementwillbe
played. Duringthisprocesstheletters
"EON" appearinthedisplay.
Attheendoftheannouncementtheradio
switches backtotheoriginalprogramme
Radio 3.
