VRmNet Gateway Laptop
Quick Start Guide
The VRmNet Gateway Laptop is a tool to comfortably set up
Internet access for VRmagic simulators to make use of the
VRmNet online portal.
Requirements
•Working Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection with DHCP
server and Internet access
•Ethernet cables (minimum one)
•Network switch if more than one simulator is to be
connected to the Internet

Step I Connecting Cables

Connect the USB cable of
the network adapter (2)
labelled “Notebook“ to the
laptop (1).
Note: Always connect the
network adapter to the
laptop before booting up.
This will shorten the boot-up
time of the laptop.
• First, set up the VRmNet Gateway Laptop as described
in this document.
• Once the VRmNet Gateway Laptop is up and running,
switch on or restart the connected simulators.
• If you have not configured network access for your
simulators before, please configure the simulators as
described in the separate Network Connection Quick
Start Guide.
Connect the port of the
network adapter labelled
“Simulator” to a network
switch (4) using an Ethernet
cable. Connect the network
switch to the simulators (5).
If only one simulator needs
to be networked, directly
connect the network adapter
to the simulator.
This step is not necessary if
a Wi-Fi Internet connection
is to be used.
If you are going to connect
to the Internet via Ethernet
cable, connect the port of
the network adapter labelled
“Internet” to the next avail-
able Ethernet jack.

Switch on the laptop by
pressing the power button.
Wait for the login screen to
appear.
To log in, click on
Genentech User.
Enter the password
VRmagicSimulators.
Click Sign In.
Step II Logging In & Checking Ethernet Connection

After logging in, the VRmNet Connection Manager is
displayed.
If the network adapter is connected to a network switch (see
Step I), the Ethernet Connection to Simulator indicator
should read Connected, provided the switch is on.
If the network adapter is connected directly to a simulator,
the Ethernet Connection to Simulator indicator should
read Connected as soon as you switch on the simulator.
Internet via Ethernet
If you have connected the network adapter to an Ethernet
jack with Internet access (see Step I), the Ethernet Con-
nection to Internet indicator should read Connected.
The VRmNet Gateway Laptop now provides Internet access
to all connected simulators.
Switch on or restart the connected simulators.
Internet via Wi-Fi
To set up a Wi-Fi connection, please read Step III on the
next page.

The connection manager starts searching for available Wi-Fi
connections. This may take a minute.
Wait until your wireless network has been found.
Choose your Wi-Fi connection and click Connect.
Most wireless networks require authentication. If you are
prompted, please enter the Password for your Wi-Fi con-
nection and click OK.
If the password has been ac-
cepted and the connection
established, a check mark is
displayed next to the Wi-Fi
name.
Click OK to close the
window.
Step III Setting Up a Wi-Fi Connection

To connect to a wireless network, click Set up new Wi-Fi
connection in the VRmNet Connection Manager.
Make sure Airplane mode is not active.

On the main screen, the Wi-Fi Connection indicator should
now read Connected.
The VRmNet Gateway Laptop now provides Internet access
to all connected simulators.
Switch on or restart the connected simulators.

Accessing Captive Portals

If you still have no access to the Internet although the status
“Connected“ is displayed for your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connec-
tion, a captive portal is probably active. This often is the case
in hotels and other public areas.
To display the captive portal web page, click Open web
browser.
If a captive portal is active, it is now displayed in the web
browser.
Enter the required information.
Once the connection has been confirmed, close the web
browser.
Forgetting Wi-Fi Connections
To forget stored Wi-Fi con-
nections, click Manage
stored Wi-Fi connections.
The stored Wi-Fi connec-
tions are displayed.
Choose a Wi-Fi connection
and click Forget.
Confirm the following ques-
tion with Yes.
Click OK to close the
window.

VRmagic service may ask
you to open the Linux shell
during troubleshooting.
To do this, click Open shell.
This step is not necessary
during normal operation.
Perform the required
commands.
After you are finished, close
the shell again.

Switching Off or Logging Out
To switch off the notebook,
click the power icon in the
bottom left corner of the
screen.
Choose your preferred
action: Lock, Log Out,
Restart, Shut Down.
